January 2008 OUR ROBESONIA

Here’s to another new year and another chance to getting it right! I’ve already had enough of winter and wake each morning reminding myself it’s one more day closer to springtime. For now I just hit the reset button and do another day of the same routine. The ice storm added to the many reasons I could do without this season. The picture above is taken from my sister Kelly’s patio overlooking the Conrad Weiser High School. Although the scenery was beautiful we got an eyeful of what a mess all the fallen trees made throughout Robesonia. Our firemen were busy all day Sunday and the days that followed, tending to the problems that seemed to be endless. Great job, guys, for all you do for Robesonia and the surrounding areas. Your reliability and quick response is appreciated and doesn’t go unnoticed. As I write this the day after the storm many people, including my sister, still have no electricity and aren’t expected to get it back for days. The ice storm of December 2007 won’t be easily forgotten for the many who were in the path of its fury. Thanks to everyone who participated in the Spirit of Christmas Trail. What a great turnout. I will pass all your comments on to the store owners so that they can start thinking about next year’s events. I heard rumors they may add more stores for your shopping fun. Congratulations to the six door prize winners who each received a $100 + prize for their $5 ticket purchase. The store owners turned over $1000 from the proceeds of all the tickets sold, to the CW PTO. This was an impressive community event that everyone enjoyed and a donation went for a good cause. BUSINESS OF THE MONTH Colonial Wood Products owned and operated by Charlie Putt located on Sheidy Road in Robesonia was established July 1989. Most local people are familiar with Charlie’s work but if you are among those who have not seen it, you can find several pieces in Ozgood’s and Soverign Bank or make an appointment to stop by the showroom on Sheidy Road and meet with Charlie in person. Charlie, the son of the late Harold P. Putt, was born with a natural talent to create and manufacture furniture of all shapes and sizes. Many of the Putts were carpenters who used their skills at the furnace and then went into business. Jacob Putt, Charlie’s grandfather, started a carpenter business in 1946 and employed his 3 sons. Jacob’s son Harold branched off from the family when Jake refused him a 5 cent raise. Harold then started Rich Maid Kitchens which he later sold to start Rich Craft Kitchens, a well known kitchen and cabinet manufacturer for years and based right here in Robesonia. Colonial Wood Products specializes in 18th and 19th Century reproductions, custom kitchens, and handcrafted primitive accessories. The time honored quality of Charlie’s furniture has earned him a place among the “Top 200” traditional craftsmen. If you have found the house of your dreams why not let Charlie design the kitchen, bathroom and furniture accessories to go with it. I have always admired Charlie’s work and I am finally getting him to build my dream kitchen. Dennis and I are looking forward to getting rid of the crappy kitchen that came with our home and adding a well built “one of a kind” kitchen that Charlie has hand made. We will have more options with cabinet sizes and design because it can be built to what we want not the standard layout of pre built kitchens. Word gets around when you have a good product to offer. If you are planning a kitchen or bathroom remodel, use Colonial Wood Products. A local company with a reputation you can count on and the quality and personal attention you deserve.

HISTORY The people in Robesonia are a big part of the history here. Many families have been here for generation after generation. I found these pictures of the Master family from the West end of Robesonia. The Masters and their extended families have played a huge role in the history of our town.

Pictured here using a step ladder as a sled on the swimming pool at Berksveldt Farm on February 6, 1955 are the Master children; William 1 1/2 yrs, Jane, 7yrs and Elsa, 5yrs.

On September 14, 1958, Mrs. Elroy Master poses with her collection of strawberry dishes in her home known as the Livingood Homestead. The structure was built in four parts, the first portion allegedly constructed from bricks left over from Independence Hall.

William and Elsa Master are surrounded by Hungarian Vizsla puppies on August 7, 1957. They were born to a pair of rare bird dogs owned by their father, Elroy who was one of the few owners of the Vizslas that were restricted to Hungry until 1953 when a few were smuggled from behind the Iron Curtain. These were the first Vizsla puppies born in Berks. County.

LIFE AT 75 DINNER What a great turnout of 100 seniors and a good time had by all. The annual banquet was held at St. Daniels church on December 1st at 12 noon hosted by the Robesonia Community Association. The meal, prepared by Patty Murdough, was followed by a huge variety of desserts. Erich Cawalla and Jenifer Kinder provided the live entertainment as pictures of past banquets were displayed for everyone to enjoy and reminisce. Thank you to Ernie Risser for the donation of the yummy filling, Tom Murdough and Chrissy Rohrbach for donating the turkeys, Jim Murdough for donating the cookie cutter gifts, to everyone who donated the delicious desserts and St Daniels for allowing us to use the church. RCA chairpersons Steve Bright, Patty Murdough and Cindy Murdough along with all the RCA members look forward to having the Life at 75 dinner every year for this influential cast to enjoy.

THE BATHTUB TEST During a visit to the mental asylum, a visitor asked the Director how do you determine whether or not a patient should be institutionalized. "Well," said the Director, "we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to empty the bathtub." "Oh, I understand," said the visitor. "A normal person would use the bucket because it's bigger than the spoon or the teacup." "No." said the Director, "A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?"

A Japanese doctor says, 'Medicine in my country is so advanced That we can take a kidney out of one man, put it in another, and have him looking for work in six weeks.' A German doctor says, 'That is nothing, we can take a lung out of One Person, put it in another, and have him looking for work in four weeks.' A British doctor says, 'In my country, medicine is so advanced that we can take half of a heart out of one person, put it in another, and have them both looking for work in two week s.' The New York doctor not to be outdone, 'You guys are way behind. We are going to take a woman with no brains out of New York; put her in the White House and then half the country will be looking for work and doctors. Sorry Hilary lovers, just an opinion.

SUPPORT OUR LOCAL TRADESMEN TWO POINTS TO PONDER 1. Cows 2. The Constitution C O W S Is it just me, or does anyone else find it amazing that during the mad cow epidemic our government could track a single cow, born in Canada almost three years ago, right to the stall where she slept in the state of Washington? And, they tracked her calves to their stalls. But they are unable to locate 11 million illegal aliens wandering around our country. Maybe we should give each of them a cow. ________________________________ T H E C O N S T I T U T I O N They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq . Why don't we just give them ours? HAVE YOUR SAY ! Thank you for all the feedback on our local businesses and concerns you have about our town. If you have something to say call me at 610-693-9722 or send it to 12 Patterson Drive-Robesonia, PA 19551. I want to hear about where you like to eat and where you don’t like to eat. I am interested in what businesses are providing both good and bad services. If an employee was rude to you or extra helpful, I want to know. I will pass your comments onto the business, good or bad, so they can pro-vide better service or so that they know they are doing a good job. If you choose not to use your name that’s OK. So, Robesonia, here’s your chance to “Have your say,” and help the community function even better. I had eaten at Digger’s and really miss their homemade chicken fingers. I was told that because they decided to close that the owner of the building is now bankrupt and there are signs in the buildings windows. Because my daughter does her laundry there I was wondering if the Laundromat will be closing? Is the building for sale? Kathryn Reifsnyder-Wernersville Kathryn, I did hear that signs are posted on the windows of the former Digger’s about a bankruptcy. I have talked to Dave & Phyllis (owner’s of Digger’s) and they are not bankrupt. To date I have heard nothing about the laundry closing because of financial debt or if the building is for sale. You could have your daughter contact the owner directly. The other day I went to the post office to mail cookies to my sister but turned to leave when the woman at the counter had a pile of packages to mail. When she saw I was leaving she called me back and insisted that I go ahead of her. Her kindness made my day. Erma Good-Robesonia

AGE 59 AND PREGNANT! A woman went to the doctor's office where she was seen by a young new doctor. After about four minutes in the examination room, the doctor told her she was pregnant. She burst out of the examining room and ran screaming down the hallway. An older doctor stopped her and asked what was the problem? She told him about what the young doctor had told her and after listening to her story, he had her sit down and relax in another examining room. The doctor marched down the hallway to the first doctor and demanded, "What's the matter with you? Mrs. Smith is 59 years old, she has four grown children, seven grandchildren and you told her she was pregnant?" The young new doctor continued writing on his clipboard and without looking up said, "Does she still have the hiccups?"
