Recite the maftir of “Parashat Zachor” on the Shabbat preceding Purim? A: There is a Biblical commandment (OC 685:7) to remember what Amalek did to Bnei Yisrael when they left Egypt, which is fulfilled by reading “Parashat Zachor”, the portion of the Torah from Parashat Ki Tetzei (Devarim 25:17) where the Torah recounts briefly what Amalek did, and instructs us to remember and never forget this episode. The Torah finishes by commanding us to wipe out any remnant of Amalek. It was derived by the Talmudic sages and codified in the Mishna (Megillah 29a) that the commandment be fulfilled on the Shabbat before Purim (OC 685:1). This time was chosen in order to combine the theme of the general destruction of Amalek with the downfall of Haman, who was of Amalekite descent (Bartenura, Megillah 3:4). Megillat Esther itself cites his lineage by describing Haman as the descendent of Agag, King of the Amalakites. Furthermore, one of the fundamental messages of Purim is that we recognize that the world operates according to God’s will and design, as opposed to the philosophy of Amalek that existence is random and therefore morality is subjective. Since the commandment is performed by reading the relevant passage from the Torah, Shabbat was chosen as a time that the community is already engaged in communal Torah reading, and the reading serves to introduce the upcoming festival of Purim. FROM YICC’S SEFER HA’MINHAGIM SHABBAT ZACHOR & PURIM

1) On Shabbat Zachor we do not say Av Harachamim before Musaf.

2) On Shabbat Zachor we say Tzidkatcha Tzedek and Kel Maleh on Shabbat Afternoon at Mincha.

3) On Shabbat Zachor we do not take out a Sefer Torah after davening just to reread Parashat Zachor; rather it is read again at “Mincha” after the reading of the regular Shabbat afternoon Torah reading. In this case the Torah used for the regular reading is rolled to “Parashat Zachor.” No “Brakhot” are recited before or after the reading.

4) Everyone stands for the Torah reading of “Parashat Zachor”.

5) We repeat the last “Pasuk” of “Parashat Zachor”, the first time saying “zeikher” (with a Tzeirei) and the second time “zeikher” (with a Segol).

6) The Haftorah for Shabbat Zachor is taken from Sefer Shmuel I 15:2 and begins with the words Ko Amar Hashem.

7) On Ta’anit Esther we say Selichot, Avinu Malkeinu and Tachanun at Shacharit. We do not say Avinu Malkeinu or Tachanun at Mincha.

8) Machazit HaShekel is observed at Mincha on Taanit Esther. It is collected through Shacharit on Purim.

9) On Purim and Shushan Purim we do not recite Tachanun and Lamenatzeach between Asheri and Uva Le’Tzion.

10) A mourner during the 12 months for a parent may lead the davening on Purim both for Mincha & Maariv but should not lead Shacharit.

11) On Purim and Shushan Purim we do not recite Tachanun, Kel Erech Apayim, and Lamenatzeach.

MATANOT L’EVYONIM With Purim approaching, we remind everyone of the

important Mitzvah of Matanot L’Evyonim.

The Mitzvah requires that both men and women give a cash gift equivalent of two meals ($40 each), so that two poor people will each have a Purim meal. Gifts should be made out to Young

Israel of Century City, with the memo marked, “Matanot L’Evyonim” or Gmach for Purim

Remember – your gifts must be in by Purim morning.
