Greetings from the faculty and staff of the Lake Charles-Boston Academy of Learning. It is hard to believe that we have almost completed another year at the LCB Academy. We hope that you enjoy this senior spotlight edition of our newsletter. We are thankful to our senior students for their attendance and their contributions to our school, and hope the very best for them as they pursue their post-high school plans. Thanks also to the schools for sharing their students with us this year. Registration for summer school continues. Students enrolling in a face-to-face class in summer school also have the opportunity to earn an additional high school credit through our summer virtual program. Enrollment in each class is limited so register now to make sure you have a place in the classes. Thank you again for the opportunity to work with your students!

Intermediate ESL students have learned that participles can be part of a verb phrase for a progressive tense or can be adjectives. The following participles could introduce magazine articles about activities in the morning and afternoon ESL middle school classes this last quarter: “Modeling Atoms of the Periodic Table” “Circling Up Covered Wagon Models on the Oregon Trail” “Planting May Flowers” “Comparing Plant and Animal Cell Models” “Designing Colored Light Spinners to Demonstrate White Light” “Hanging Mobiles on the Electromagnetic Spectrum” “Writing Novel Scenes into Play Form” “Creating Slides from American War Research” “Comparing Ellis and Angel Island Immigration” “Reading the Novels: The Secret Garden and War of the Worlds”
ESL-High SchoolLinda Dewey-teacher
High school intermediate ELL’s(English language learners) are finishing the academic year by writing a research paper in which they compare and contrast two well-known cities in the United States. Examples include such places as New York, New York and Los Angeles, California; Denver, Colorado and Charlotte, North Carolina; Minneapolis, Minnesota and Dallas, Texas. No students have the same cities. Since the cities represent a broad range of locations across the United States, oral class reports after the projects are written will provide ELL’s with information about the major areas of the United States.
The intermediate ELL’s are in their last year of the ESL program. One of our students, Alejandra G., is a senior and will graduate with plans to work and to go to college. The other students will be in regular education classes at their home schools next year.
Beginning students in ESL enjoyed reading Pocahontas, a book about the relationship between the Englishmen who founded Jamestown, Virginia, and the Algonquin Indians, who were the native settlers of the area. Pocahontas, the Indian king’s daughter, played a large role in helping the English. Students learned that the Disney movie about Pocahontas was not at all like the book, which was from notes that Captain John Smith, one of the Jamestown settlers, wrote.
Beginning ELL’s will move up to the intermediate level of ESL(English as a Second Language) next fall.
Virtual Program
Now is the time to begin thinking about virtual courses for the summer and next year. Our enrollment is limited so now is the time to plan.
SUMMER
Students can enroll in one of our summer courses if they also enroll in a face to face course at LCBA. The cost of the face to face course is $100 but then the virtual course is free. Visit our website or get an application from LCBA to see what courses are available. This is an excellent opportunity to get ahead or catch up with your high school program.
2014-2015
We are planning to offer a complete list of required courses next year as well as some exciting new electives. We will provide a complete list of the courses on our website and to the high school counselors as soon as it is complete. We hope to be able to help more students who need courses to complete their areas of concentration for graduation.
