To read about weaving with a weav-ing sword and for an 8-shaft version of Rita’s towel design, see Handwoven May/June 2013, pages 64–68. The 10-shaft or 8-shaft plus pickup instructions given here are to weave the lace shuttle design with a cute curve to the “yarn” coming from the shuttles.

Wind the warp following the warp color order in Figure 1. Warp the loom back to front, centering the warp for a weaving width of 28".

Before beginning to thread the loom, check the heddle count in Figure 3 for the 10-shaft threading or Figure 5 for the 8-shaft threading to make sure you have enough heddles on each shaft, especially shafts 1 and 2. Thread the loom according to the draft in Figure 2 for the 10-shaft draft or the draft in Figure 4 to weave the pattern on 8-shafts with pick-up.

EQUIPMENT10-shaft loom or 8-shaft loom and a pick-up stick, 27" weav-ing width; 15-dent reed; 2 or 3 shuttles and 3 bobbins. For pick-up, 1 narrow dowel or rod 28" long.

YARNSWarp: 35/2 linen (4,600 yd/lb, Bockens Lingarn from Glimakra USA), #0000 natural, 1,854 yd; #0002 half bleached, 117 yd. 16/1 linen (4,800 yd/lb, Bock-ens Lingarn, Glimakra USA), #520 red, 423 yd.Weft: 35/2 linen, #0002 half bleached, 1,098 yd; #0000 natural, 72 yd; 16/1 linen, #520 red, 332 yd.

WARP LENGTH798 ends 3 yd long, following the warp color order in Figure 1 (allows 4" for take-up, 30" for loom waste).

SETTS

Warp: 30 epi (2/dent in a 15-dent reed).Weft: 25 ppi.

DIMENSIONS Width in the reed: 263⁄5". Woven length (measured under tension on the loom): 74" (37" each towel). Finished size after washing: 2 hemmed towels 24½" × 33¾".

When the loom is dressed and you are ready to weave, wind your bobbins and place them into a damp paper towel and plastic bag for about one hour. To reduce the weight of the pattern treadles and facilitate the pick-ups, the tie-up is made so that the Atwater-Bron-son lace pattern is woven with the warp floats on top.

Weave each towel following the treadling in your chosen draft, using the weft colors indicated.

Pick-up sequences for the 8-shaft draft in Figure 4 are highlighted in yellow in the treadling. To make the pick-up, depress Trea-dle 9 to open the pick-up shed that raises the 6 groups of 10 warp threads on Shaft 8. Make pick-up A or B, as indicated in the column under treadle 9.

• To make pick-up A: Working in front of the reed, insert the pick-up stick, under the 3rd and 4th warp threads nearest the adjacent red warp stripe. Repeat for each of the remaining groups. Close the pick-up shed after making the pick-up.

• For pick-up B: Working in front of the reed, insert the pick-up stick under the first and second warp threads nearest the adjacent red warp stripe of each of the 6 groups. Close the pick-up shed.

To weave the pick-up sheds, with the pick-up stick in place, open the first shed in the highlighted area. The warp threads raised by the treadle will lift the pick-up stick and the warp threads on top of it. Weave, and beat gently (while it remains in the warp, the pick-up stick will affect weft placement). Leaving the stick in place, weave the remaining two picks in the highlighted area. Remove the pick-up stick and beat the 3 weft picks into final position.

After weaving the first lace pattern sequence, weave about 8½" plain weave and then weave the pattern in reverse to complete the first towel. Throw 2 picks of a contrasting weft, and weave the second towel as for the first. Cut the warp from the loom.

Make and weave pick-up at the highlighted rows in treadling as follows:Depress Treadle 9 to raise Shaft 8, 6 groups of 10 warp threads. Use a ne dowel slightly longer than the width of the warp to make the pick-up.

Yellow sections in the treadline are pickup sections. On rows marked with P, pick up threads for pick-up A or pick-up B (see below), then close the pick-up shed. Weave the next 3 picks with the pick-up stick in place. Remove pick-up stick at the point marked with *.

For pick-up A, in each group of 10 threads, pick up the 3rd and 4th warp threads closest to the nearest red stripe. Close the pick-up shed. For pick-up B, in each group of 10 threads, pick up the 1st and 2nd warp threads closest to the nearest red stripe.

Cut the towels apart along the marked lines and zigzag or serge the raw edges. Turn the raw edges to the wrong side, press, and then fold ½" to the wrong side to form the hem and enclose the cut edges. Hem your towels using a blind stitch. Wash them in warm water with a mild detergent. Let them soak for 30 minutes and then agitate them by hand. Rinse in warm water. Blot the towels by rolling them in terry cloth towels and lay them flat to dry, smoothing out any wrinkles. Before they are completely dry, iron them with a steam iron on the linen setting.
