Thanksgiving:Interesting Facts ● Thanksgiving is one of the most awaited and favorite national

holidays of the Americans. It is mainly observed to venerate the early settlers as well as their harvest feast.

● Celebrated on the last Thursday of November, Thanksgiving has a long, interesting, and diverse history dating back to the 16th century.

● A popular belief is that it was first celebrated in 1621 in Massachusetts by some 50 plus pilgrims, along with the Wampanoag Indians, in order to commemorate their first successful harvest at the Plymouth Colony. It was a three-day event.

● Although the exact date on the same is obscure, it is believed to have been celebrated somewhere between September 21st and November 9th. …

● History also has it that this event was first celebrated in 1541 when Francisco Vasquez de Coronado – a Spanish explorer who came in quest of gold - held a Thanksgiving festivity in Texas’ Palo Duro Canyon.

● Abraham Lincoln – the 16th president - declared it as a National Holiday in 1863.

● Thanksgiving as a National US holiday is largely attributed to the efforts of Sara Josepha Hale – the world-renowned writer who is best remembered for her creation, ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb,’. She is, unsurprisingly, acknowledged as the Mother of Thanksgiving.

● The day following the Thanksgiving is observed as the Black Friday.
