In Our Community2017 Soccer Registration Spring Outdoor Soccer 2017:Even though we are just starting the winter season, our thoughts turn to soccer registration in the New Year! Dalhousie Soccer’s outdoor recreational program starts at the end of April, with online registration starting February 1st, 2017 to March 15, 2017. Participants may still register from March 16th, 2017 continuing through until March 31st, 2017, although a $20 late registration fee will be charged. ABSOLUTELY NO REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER MARCH 31st, 2017. Our soccer program runs on Tuesday and Thursday evenings staring at 6:30 p.m. We offer U4, U6, U8, U10 recreational leagues. We are also looking at starting U12 teams for boys and girls, if there is enough interest. We are looking to join up with neighboring communities to make this age group a-go! In addition, every team needs a coach and an assistant coach. Coaching clinics will be provided!

The goal of Dalhousie Soccer is to provide an opportunity for players, referees, and coaches, to participate and enjoy community soccer. Dalhousie Soccer is a community-based soccer program providing an opportunity for the youth of our community to play soccer. Teams are formed on the basis of equality within each age group. The emphasis is on development of soccer skills, team sportsmanship, and FUN. All teams are mixed boys and girls. This recreational league is offered for U4 to U10 age groups inclusive. If we have enough interest, we will run a U12 Boys and U12 Girls team. The 2017 season begins in late April on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

VolunteersDalhousie Soccer is a community-run, non-profit, volunteer-based organization. All families are requiredto fulfill at least one volunteer role as a condition of registration. If you have more than one child in ourprogram, your family is still only required to fill one volunteer role. With insufficient volunteers to runthe program, it is at risk of being cancelled. Please consider this fun and rewarding opportunity to makea difference for your kids and your community. The most critical volunteer positions are for coaching. At least two coaches are required for each team and at the younger age group levels, absolutely no experience is required. Coaching clinics will be provided! Other volunteer positions included equipment volunteers, safety and ball pump volunteers, and season end event volunteers. Detailed job descriptions are available in the online registration system during the registration

process.

Register early on-line and volunteer for one of the positions to receive a price reduction on your registration. Please do not sign up for a volunteer position just to receive the registration price reduction if you cannot follow through with the commitment. This really affects the running of your child’s team and minimizes theirs and the team’s experience.

CoachingTo teach young kids, you do not need to be an expert in soccer. What you need is to be enthusiastic, have fun, and reinforce what players do right with praise. Praise will make the kids feel good about soccer and doing their best. Your positive thinking will carry over and reap huge dividends for your team. Basic kicking, dribbling, and passing are all the skills you need and can be learned easily. Mostly you will direct the kids to play some fun soccer-skill building games like “British bulldog”. Playing the right games, week after week, you will be amazed at the improvement of your players. The fuel driving their learning and improvement is having fun. When you see the kids enjoying themselves, you will find yourself having fun too. Please sign up to volunteer helping with coaching. We intend to have two coaches for every team, in the event that you cannot make it to a game and need backup. Coaching clinics will be offered at the DCA at the completion of registration. The program coordinator will contact you with dates and times. Thank you for your participation in Dalhousie Soccer.

RegistrationRegistration is available online ONLY again this year. Registration is open from February 1 to March 15 (registration link will be available February 1). Registration between March 16 and March 31 will be subject to a $20 late fee. No other registrations will be accepted after March 31. You will need a current Dalhousie Community Association membership to register. If you have any questions or concerns about your registration, please contact the DCA at 403-286-2555 #1 or [email protected] We are looking to cooperate with Edgemont Soccer to have more teams involved in this program.

Age Groups and Registration FeesPlayers participate in the soccer program according to their age. All players must register in their proper age group. Children may play in an older age group than the one designated for their year of birth (“playing up”), but under no circumstances will they be permitted to play in a younger age group. We get numerous requests for

Development in Dalhousie? Development plans in Dalhousie? You bet. There are

a few development proposals being planned for Dalhousie that could add as many as 2,000 residents to our community! As a community member your opinion is being sought. In Our CommunityOpen House Feb. 28 Regarding Potential 1,200 Unit Development in DalhousieA Development Permit is being sought which has the

potential to add 1,200 Residential units near the Dalhousie LRT station. The original permit details are below, however the developer (Birchwood) is modifying the permit based upon feedback from Dalhousie residents and City of Calgary planners. We invite you to a community Open House at the Dalhousie Community Association on Tuesday, Feb 21 from 7:00 – 9:00 PM to see the latest iteration of the plan and provide your feedback on it.

Original Plan details: The subject site is approximately 3.45 acres (1.4 ha) in size and is located at 4739 Dalton Drive NW in the community of Dalhousie. Bounded by Dalhousie Drive to the north, Dalton Drive to the east, an existing townhouse development to the south and park space (LRT park and ride and a shopping centre) to the west, the site is within the 600 metres radius of the LRT station. The existing land use is M-C1 d75. Current Proposed Development.

Birchwood proposes the following development on the site:

• Proposed Use: Multi-Residential Development with Residential supportive Commercial uses

• Density: to a maximum of 1,200 residential units in phases

• Floor Area: 5.5 FAR or approximately 825,000 SF (77,000 SM)

• Building Height: approximately 110 metres plus mechanical penthouse

More information on the plan and a site description can be found on the DCA Calgary website on the development page. More info on the City of Calgary “What We Heard” document can be found at www.calgary.ca/dalhousie .

Dalhousie Kindergarten NewsWinter Theme and Looking forward to September 2017

January brought our classroom (and Mother Nature) to the theme of Winter. We have been busy playing outside in the snow, and have started our skating lessons. Inside, we continue with our music lessons with Wendy Kondrat, and practice our writing and reading skills with fun activity centres. In math we continue to build on patterning and sequencing skills, and of course this was a perfect time to learn about changes in matter as we observed melting and freezing in our science sessions. All of our enriched activities and experiences are essential to our learning and development, and one of the reasons why our program is one of Calgary’s top offerings! We limit our class size to 18 students each year, and with January registration underway, we anticipate to have a full class once again for the 2017 – 18 year. In September, we will be welcoming a new teacher, as Mrs Brown retires after 26 years with our program. What an incredible influence she has been through the years! She has taught several children whose parents also had Mrs Brown as their teacher - you can’t get a more personal endorsement than that! We are very grateful for Mrs Brown’s unbelievable talents! She leaves our program with a very clear idea of the characteristics and skills that help define our program’s success. With those in mind, recruitment efforts are underway, and we look forward to introducing a new teacher to our families by the end of the school year. Our current Teacher’s Aide, Destiny Wilson, will continue with the program in the fall.

Our program offers spaces for both Kindergarten and Junior Kindergarten (JK). Kindergarten is funded by the Government of Alberta for children who will be 5 years old by February 28, 2018. While not mandated nor funded by Alberta Education, our tuition based JK program offers an option for children who are ready for an enriched program, but are not yet ready for a full Kindergarten program. JK students can include both those who may be kindergarten aged, but not quite ready due to maturity or to an underdeveloped interest in letters and numbers, or those who are too young for kindergarten but are advanced in literacy and numeracy and looking for an added challenge to maintain interest, enthusiasm and curiosity. Junior Kindergarten is also beneficial where parents have decided that a child’s ‘official’ kindergarten year will be spent in a language

immersion program, such as Spanish or French, or where children are developing their English language skills.

Kindergarten registration opens on Jan 24th from 6:30 – 7:30 PM and JK registrations will be accepted starting at 9 AM on Feb 1st, depending upon available space. Please call (403) 288-1050 to check on available spaces or visit our website at www.dcakids.com for more information.
