Friday, February 4 New MemberlMusic

Shabbat Is Planned

Rabbi Marc Di sick to speak at New Member/Music Shabbat Service, Fri., Feb.4

Plan to be at Temple on Friday evening, February 4th, at 8:00 PM for our special Shabbat "Service of Song and Music".

Our Cantor and Choir will perform a "Service in Song" featuring a complete spectrum of composers of liturgical-folk Jewish music. From the very traditional to

the very modem, the compositions of E. Bloch, M. Helfman, W . Binder I. Fried, S. Secunda, Y. Schorr, i Klepper, and Debbie Friedman promise to provide a great treat for Jewish liturgical music lovers.

New Member Shabbat Dinner, hosted by our Board of Trustees and chaired by Nancy Frost, chairperson of our membeship committee, is also being planned. There is no cost for this Shabbat dinner, which is open to all new members of our congregation. We hope that the informal setting of a Shabbat dinner will provide further opportunity for fellowship, and making new connections with our Temple.

Rabbi Marc Disick, our new Director of the New Jersey-West Hudson Council of the UAHC, our National Reform Movement, will join us for dinner, and speak at services. Rabbi Disick became the new Director of our Region of the UAHC in July of 1993, succeeding Rabbi Daniel Freelander.

Before becoming our Regional Director, Rabbi Disick served as Rabbi of Temple Judea in Massapequa, NY. No stranger of New Jersey, he served as Chaplain and Assistant Hillel Director at Princeton University while a student Rabbi. -Later, he was the Associate Rabbi at Temple Emanu-EI of Westfield from 1986 -199l.

The UAHC, which we support through our MUM Dues, provides many services to our congregation, including help with our programm ing, youth activities, and school. The UAHC also runs our movement's Summer Camp Programs and Israel Programs.

Sunday, January 23

Swimming, boating, arts and crafts, sports, games, making new friends, learning, an unforgettable, fun summer experience. These are just some of the activities that take place at Camp Harlam, our Reform Movement's sponsored Summer Camp located in the Pocanos. Camp Harlam promises a summer of fun- a lifetime of friends.

Two 4-week sessions are offered, and this year a special 2 week session is being offered for new Campers. Some scholarship funds are available from both the Camp, and our Temple's Youth Scholarship and the Rabbi's Discretionary Funds. All requests will be kept confidential.

If you have any questions about Camp Harlam, please call the Rabbi, or Camp Harlam, (215) 563-8183. A special thanks to Nancy and Jeff Fine for chairing our Camp Harlam Open House.

Religious School Reports by Ann Kanarek

Tu B'Shevat marks the beginning of the fruit crop in Israel and is the New Year of the Trees. It is regarded as a minor festival or a semi-holiday for liturgical purposes. In school, however, all holidays are a big event and we usually celebrate in a variety of ways. Similar to Passover, we do a Tu B'Shevat seder ceremony. This is a less structured seder and more like a creative ritual which includes readings, songs, blessings and the eating of an assortment of fruits and nuts and drinking the ritual four cups ofwineljuice.

Some of the classes will recognize Tu B'Shevat as an "ecoliday" and do environmental arts and crafts. These projects may include terrariums, sponge gardens, bird feeders, and tree masks. Older classes could explore passages from the Bible, Mishnah and Talmud which speak about fruit and trees. Between study sessions they may eat from the fruits which have just studied about. More recently it has become a form of Arbor Day when it is the custom to plant trees or provide money for the planting of trees in Israel.

Shalom and blessings for yet another new year. My very best wishes for a happy and healthy "Secular" new Year. In the new year, we hope that your children will come home with a renewed sense of Jewish pride and eagerly post important work done in Hebrew School onto your refrigerator. SHALOM from HAR SINAI to HOME is the new clip magnet that our students received to help remind them to share important flyers and notices with you. We hope that in a small way this will help continue to involve you as active positive partners in the Jewish education of our children.

Confirmation Class Updates Our Confirmation Program for grades 8-10 has ben very busy these last

months. Our program has a heavy ·emphasis on social Action and Social Justice, and our students have been busy working on many Sunday's in the community.

In January and February, a special "intersession" of programs has been planned. On January 9 and 23, Planned Parenthood of the Mercer Area will lead a series of workshops: "Good Love," "Do the Right Thing" and "Too Close for Comfort."

On February 6, Kathy Kahn, Outreach Director of New Jersey-West Hudson Council of the UAHC, will lead a workshop on Jewish Identity and Dating.

A special community wide confirmation program, "Judaism and Ecology," has been planned for February 13. Class that day will meet at Brothers of Israel Congregation.

January 28-30, our 9th and 10th graders will be off to Washington DC for a wild (well, hopefully not too wild), fun-filled, exciting weekend. They will be joined by Rabbi Straus, and the confirmation class from Beth Chaim Congregation in West Windsor. The cost for the entire weekend is $135.00! Services and special programs at Johns Hopkins Hillel and the RAC (Religious Action Center), Havdalah at the Lincoln Memorial, and afternoon at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Air and Space Museum, the Capitol and Senate- these are just some of the sights we will visit and see.

We wish to acknowledge the generous support of the Jewish Community Federation of MercerlBucks whose special grants have helped to underwrite the costs of some of these programs.

Rabbi's Book Review fuesday, January 11, 7:30pm

Since the publication of "The Jewish Catalogue" (now in 3 volumes) in the late 1970's the American Jewish Community has experienced something of a Jewish Renewal Movement. More and more books are now being written and published on "how to Jew" and how to find "new" meaning in our ancient rituals and traditions.

Join Rabbi Straus on Tuesday, January 11 at 7 : 30 when he reviews and shares with us some of the best of these books published this last year, including: "Putting Go d on the Guest List: How to Reclaim the Spiritual Meaning of Your Child's Bar or Bat Mitzvah" by Jeffrey Salkin; "The Business Bible: Ten New Commandments for creating an Ethical Workplace" by Wayne Dosick; and "The How to Handbook for Jewish Living" by Kerry Olitzky and Ronald Isaacs. We thank our Sisterhood for sponsoring this program.

To help us plan this event, we need your help. If you already are, or plan to be, in Florida this winter, please call the Temple, or mail this information coupon, and give us your Florida address and phone number.

HSTY News by Peter Sanborn

HSTY has had a great turnout at all of its events for the first half of the year. In November, HSTY had a great Walleyball event. The biggest turnout in years enjoyed food and Walleyball at the Pennsbury Racquetball Club. We all had a great time.

In December, HSTY had another successful event ... Social Action Day. Everybody came out to lend a hand in making food baskets for the less fortunate. Everyone had a great time, and we were happy to help out the Temple's Social Action Committee and the community.

We hope that everybody comes out for the second half of the HSTY year. We have a lot of great events lined up for the next few months. All the information about the Day In New York on January 16th and the February 20th Ski Trip will, and. other exciting events, will be forthcoming.

Temple Cemetery & Memorial Plaques

Har Sinai has a most beautiful Memorial Park in Ewing Cemetery. It is a dignified and serene resting place for our members and their loved ones. the thoughtful purchase of a suitable family plot years before any actual need arises, is an important obligation for all families.

If your family does not yet have this protection, Joel Orland, Chairperson, will be happy to discuss the purchase of a suitable family plot, companion or single graves. Call him at 883-1400.
