Clark Group celebrates 55 yearsof reliable service

Dealer of the Month

by Melanie ParkerThe Clark Group, whichincludes Clark Rigging &Rental Corp. and NiagaraErecting, Inc., enters its 55thyear in business, in the capa-ble hands of the second gener-ation of family management.Following in the footprints cre-ated by their father, Floyd“Red” Clark, siblings DavidClark, Steven Clark and Diane(Clark) Bielinski, have made aseamless transition of busi-ness leadership to the nextgeneration because of the careful thought that has gone into howthey continue to operate and grow this challenging business. Theirsuccess is based on the valuable experience provided by theirdynamic father “Red.” Clark, the founder and innovative leader of thisfamily business, left an impressive legacy of solid growth, and a work-ing culture that stresses customer satisfaction and leadership in theconstruction market.President Dave Clark recalls one example of his father’s legacy is,“You have to spend money to keep current with the ever evolving con-struction industry. He encouraged us to buy and maintain the bestequipment, pairing it with the best employees. Our ever expandingcrane fleet exemplifies that tradition. We have just taken delivery of anew 400 ton crane. We are always studying the industry to find newsolutions for efficient rigging problems,” says Dave.Brother Steve agrees. He says their father had nerve unlike mostbusiness owners. He would take jobs that others avoided. “Wecontinue this thinking today when we work with men like NikWallenda, who walked in our office one morning and said ‘I’m goingto wire walk over Niagara Falls’. How did we respond? We said, ‘Howcan we help and when can we start?’”“You never know what type work you will be offered, but usually itinvolves difficulties and danger inherent in lifting,” added Steve. “Wehave the confidence to tackle these jobs because of our years ofexperience and our trust in our abilities. Our safety record is the best.”Diane, the company’s comptroller, oversees the administrativeresponsibilities, which includes ways to fund their growing businesssafely. It takes devoted concentration to keep the business financialsstrong, to meet local, state and federal paperwork requirements andto keep an eye on growth opportunities as well. Diane said that shetoo, thanks her father who led by example and showed those underhis leadership, how to persevere in good and bad times. “He alsoinstilled in us the courage to make the tough decisions that go alongwith a truly family business,” she said.

Attachments for equipment are be-coming more popular in the field; theyoffer a cost effective way to accomplishdifferent tasks using only one piece ofequipment. Like any other piece ofequipment, there are hazards associat-ed with it. It is important to make sureemployees have read the safety manu-al; this will help ensure that the capa-bilities of the attachments are under-stood and they are used for their in-tended purpose.

Things to remember when operatingequipment with attachments

• Observe all safety precautions;

• Don’t stand between the equipmentand the attachment;

• Keep all shields and guards in place;

• Don’t operate the equipment ifshields or guards are missing;

• Before performing adjustments ormaintenance, make sure the engine isshut off and implement motion hasstopped;

• Do NOT modify attachments;

• Only operate vehicles for which youare properly trained;

• Complete a proper pre-operationalsafety inspection before operating yourvehicle. In addition, before proceedingforward or backward, ensure that thereare no persons or obstructions in theway. In all cases, report all noted de-

fects immediately which could create ahazardous condition; and

• All vehicles must be turned off andparking procedures followed when vehi-cle is unattended.

Hazards to be considered are 1. get-ting caught in the pinch points of thebuck arms or the pivot area of an artic-ulated machine, 2. collision, 3. spillinga load, 4. hydraulic leaks, 5. the opera-tor slipping and or falling when mount-ing or dismounting the equipment, 6.mechanical failure, and 7. a raisedbucket falling. Backup cautiously andbe aware of your surroundings. Never

permit riders on the equipment. Thejarring and bouncing could cause some-one to be thrown off. Be cautious ofoverhead hazards. Have the bucket low-ered to the ground unless the workplanned requires that it be raised. In-

stall blocks under raised buckets orarms so they cannot fall on you.

The Equipment Leasing and FinanceAssociation (ELFA) which representsthe $725 billion equipment finance sec-tor, revealed its Top 10 Equipment Ac-quisition Trends for 2013. Given thatevery year U.S. businesses, nonprofitsand government agencies spend in ex-cess of $1.2 trillion in capital goods orfixed business investment (includingsoftware), financing more than half ofthose assets, these trends impact a sig-nificant portion of the U.S. economy.Businesses considering acquiringequipment this year will consider nu-

merous end user benefits while weigh-ing continued uncertainty related toeconomic conditions and fiscal policies.

“Equipment acquisition plays a criti-cal role in driving the supply chainsacross all U.S. manufacturing and serv-ice sectors. We have distilled recent re-search data, including the EquipmentLeasing & Finance Foundation’s 2013Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Eco-nomic Outlook Report and U.S. Equip-ment Finance Market Study 2012-2013,industry participants’ expertise, andmember input from ELFA meetings and

ELFA issued the following Top 10Equipment Acquisition Trends for 2013to help businesses with their strategicequipment acquisition plans:

1. Corporate perceptions of the eco-nomic outlook will be a primary driverof business investment decisions. De-spite pressing considerations such astechnological innovations and agingequipment, the economy will be the true

barometer for whether or not business-es acquire new equipment in 2013.

2. Equipment investment will pick upin the second half of 2013. Equipmentinvestment will grow this year, althoughthe rate of growth will be hampered byfiscal uncertainty. Lastyear, with the weather being unseasonably warm andsunny, approximately 8,500 visitors kept exhibitorsbusy throughout the entire event shopping for newequipment and services to help make their operationsmore profitable. As part of the outdoor activitiesscheduled for the expo, this year, competitors will notonly be able to participate in a Skid Steer Rodeo, butthey can also compete in a Backhoe Rodeo that isplanned for this year, as well!

“We had a near record crowd,” said Ken Maring,Trade Show manager, following last year’s show. “Thebeautiful weather made it much easier for people toattend. Some years, winter weather is still very mucha factor during the show. We were happy to see ourshow goers enjoying themselves the way that they didlast year. We trust that this year will be no different.”

Since 1988, the New York Hard Hat Expo has beenthe premier showcase for construction equipmentand services in the Northeast market area. Over theyears, the Hard Hat Expo has continued to growbecause of its quality exhibitors and the addition ofnew events for attendees.

Hey Fred -

We’re a small contractor and finallygot our year closed… but it was a crazyprocess, especially the payroll portion!Is there anything I can do now to pre-pare for next year or any tools that canmake year end easier?

- Marco

Hey Marco -

Year end can certainly be a stressfultime, particularly with payroll! Thereare deadlines to meet and certain fac-tors that are out of your control. For in-stance, this year the government waiteduntil Jan. 1, 2013 to vote on final taxtables for 2013! There’s really nothingyou can do about that, but there aresome things you can do to make yournext year end easier.

When it comes to payroll, there are a

few tasks you can take care of through-out the year instead of waiting until theend, like verifying all of your employeesnames, addresses, zip codes and SocialSecurity numbers. You can also trackthird party sick pay throughout the yearso you don’t have to scramble once De-cember rolls around!

In addition, there are a few tools thatcan help. There are both accountingsoftware packages and payroll servicesthat offer products to simplify andstreamline year end for contractors.This includes prep material like yearend checklists, workbooks and instruc-tions to keep you on task as you closeyour year end, and to ensure that youdon’t forget anything. Live webinarswith construction payroll experts helpto explain processes with specific soft-

ware and services, plus they give youthe opportunity to ask questions andget answers right away.

Ultimately, it comes down to havingthe right processes in place and havingthe resources on hand to make year enda little more bearable. Good luck!

momentum through relief from the pol-icy uncertainty that brought the econo-my to the edge of the fiscal cliff. An im-proving housing sector will provide anadded boost.

3. Pent-up demand will spur invest-ment across varied equipment types.Demand for replacement equipment willdrive investment in the construction,agriculture and transportation cate-gories in particular, while other equip-ment types will await the replacementcycle. However, greater economic im-provements will be needed before signif-icant equipment investment expansiontakes place.

4. A continuing low interest rate envi-ronment will enable companies to ac-quire the equipment they need and con-

serve cash. The prospect of continuedlow interest rates at least through 2014will be an incentive for businesses to ac-quire equipment through financing andstill hold on to their cash for uncertain-ties. In addition to maintaining cashflow, equipment financing will helpbusinesses preserve capital and im-prove expense planning in challengingeconomic conditions.

5. A majority of U.S. businesses willuse some form of financing for equip-ment acquisition. In 2013, $742 billion(55 percent) of the projected $1.3 trillioninvestment in plant, equipment andsoftware investment in the UnitedStates will be financed through loans,leases and lines of credit. Seven out of10 businesses will use at least one form

of financing to acquire equipment.

6. Business size will impact equip-ment acquisition. Size will matterwhen acquiring equipment in 2013.Primarily larger businesses anticipateincreasing equipment spending overthe next 12 months. Small companies’high degree of concern about generaleconomic conditions and less accessto credit will temper their equipmentacquisition plans.

7. The gaining prominence of cloudcomputing will transform the way busi-nesses pay for IT investments. Alongwith changes in how companies con-sume software and hardware, cloudcomputing will spawn new financing op-tions. Companies will look to equipmentfinanciers for variable payment struc-tures in the cloud.

8. Credit market conditions will re-main favorable for long term equipmentfinancing. Businesses will generally findan improving credit supply as they con-sider equipment acquisitions.

9. The one year extension of bonusdepreciation may provide incentives forbusinesses to acquire equipment. Thecontinuation of the depreciation bonuswill allow businesses to deduct up to 50percent of the cost of new equipmentpurchases in 2013.

10. Although the value of lease fi-nancing will remain, businesses willbegin to adapt their equipment acqui-sition strategies to comply with longawaited changes to lease accountingstandards. A new draft of proposedchanges to lease accounting standardsby the Financial Accounting StandardsBoard and the International Account-ing Standards Board should be an-nounced this year, enabling business-es to begin to evaluate how their bal-ance sheets, earnings and other finan-cials will be affected by equipment fi-nancing agreements.

NEW HOLLAND, PA —With many coastal areas ofNew Jersey taking the fullbrunt of Hurricane Sandy’sdamaging effects, it’s sur-prising that any structuressurvived. But, once theflood waters cleared, sever-al homeowners with Supe-rior Walls foundation sys-tems found they couldquickly and easily return totheir homes.

When Scott and SherriNevins evacuated theirBarnegat, NJ home 12hours before HurricaneSandy struck, they hadno idea what they’d findwhen they returned. Sev-eral days later the couplecame back and wasamazed at the damage intheir neighborhood —and even more aston-ished at their own home.

“We found lots of debrisaround our home and alittle sand in the garage,”says Scott Nevins. “Wesprayed out the garageand that was it —cleanup done! While oth-ers in our neighborhoodwere not as fortunate,we’re reaping the benefitsof our smart decision in2009 to include SuperiorWalls in the constructionof our home.

“Initially we selectedthe product because itprovided a straight foun-dation for the framer andit wouldn’t sway like ahouse on pilings. Sincethis is a windy location,we also liked the ideathat the garage was air-tight with the SuperiorWalls foundation. Now,when we look around andsee the extensive damageother homeowners face,we’re exceptionally grate-ful that we selected thisprecast concrete system.”

Nevins points out thatthere was no sheet rockor insulation mess in hisgarage from the flood wa-ters to clean up after thestorm. The surge of 18-inches of water in hisgarage was easily cleanedup and life went back tonormal for the family.

In Ortley Beach, NJ,one of the hardest hit ar-eas from the storm,builders were amazedthat an under construc-tion Superior Walls foun-dation was completelyunaffected by the hurri-cane. Total devastationsurrounds the construc-tion site that was undam-aged by the storm.

“There are numerousstories of Superior Wallsprojects simply defying

Mother Nature in NewJersey during thisstorm,” says John Rugawith Northeast PrecastSuperior Walls. “Onehome in Strathmere, NJwas left completely un-harmed by the hurricanewhile neighboring houseswere severely damaged.This particular house hasabove grade SuperiorWalls with flood vents. Asthe waters rose, theywent through the ventsand let the house with lit-tle to no damage.”

The Superior

Advantage

As opposed to concreteblocks or poured concrete,precast concrete panelsby Superior Walls are steelreinforced and created inthe manufacturingprocess with DOW® Sty-rofoam™ boards, whichprovide excellent rigidfoam insulation. The re-sulting wall panels pro-vide a dry, warm, damp

resistant and exceptional-ly energy efficient founda-tion for a home.

“If you’re constructinga home, the foundationselection is critical forbuilding an energy effi-cient structure,” says JimCostello, president of Su-perior Walls. “Choosing aprecast Xi™ or Xi Plus™concrete foundation canhelp reduce heat loss in ahome. That’s a ‘bottomline’ consideration thathas long term financialbenefits for a homeowner.

“In addition, in extremeweather situations likeHurricane Sandy, there’sa great deal of ‘peace ofmind’ from knowing thatyour foundation systemcan really handle severeweather conditions. Eachstorm is different, but tocontinue hearing ‘survivalstories’ from homeownerswho had minimal damageas a result of the super-storm really proves the

durability of these precastfoundation systems.”

Superior Walls insulat-ed precast concrete wallsystems have earned theGreen Approved Productdesignation by the Na-tional Association ofHome Builders (NAHB)Research Center. Forhomeowners, the benefitsof Superior Walls founda-tions systems are sub-stantial. The energy effi-cient walls help lower en-ergy costs and reduce en-ergy leakage while provid-ing increased living spacein a comfortable setting.Builders also benefit fromsaved job site time andlabor when certified Su-perior Walls installationcrews set the walls inplace in less than oneday, so that home con-struction can immediate-ly begin the following day.

Each Superior Wallspanel is custom made to

the specifications of an in-dividual home, includingbuilt-in openings for win-dows and doors. Pre-engi-neered access for wiringor small plumbing ele-ments along with smartstud facing for easy dry-

wall installation are in-cluded and help speed upthe installation process.

LATHAM, NY — Underground Imag-ing Technologies (UIT) uses technologyto see what can’t be seen beneath theearth’s surface. “Today’s environment iscompetitive with tighter budgets and ex-pedited timelines” explains Deborah Os-terhoudt, vice president, UIT NortheastOperations. “In this atmosphere, projectdelays due to unknown or poorlymapped utilities can significantly im-pact the bottom line of the project. Thechallenge increases as we work to devel-op and execute competitive project bidswhile maintaining a safe work site. As aCaterpillar Affiliate, UIT is part of thesolution to this challenge. UIT providesdetailed information about the subsur-face environment enabling project own-ers, design engineers and contractors toproceed with projects with an accurateassessment of the subsurface resultingin a more cost effective, efficient projectand a safer work site.”

UIT employs geophysical tools to takea non-destructive “look” beneath thesurface. With the data gathered in thesesubsurface investigations, UIT createsmaps of utilities and structures hiddenfrom view. This information is sharedwith project owners and engineers inthe design phase of a project and withcontractors during the bidding, plan-ning and execution of a constructionproject. On select Caterpillar equip-ment, this subsurface information canbe loaded into the controls, providingthe operator with an alert system when

coming close to or entering an area withunderground utilities.

For companies who are looking for high qualitydiabase, more commonly known as trap rock,customers in Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jerseylook to Dyer Quarry, Inc. (one of the AndersonCompanies) of Birdsboro, PA as a major supplier. Theaggregates that come from this Berks County opera-tion are ideal for specialty uses like railroad ballast,pre-stressed concrete and other high stress concreteproducts. With approximately 100 million tons ofpermitted diabase reserves remaining, Dyer Quarry,Inc. is positioned to be a future leader in the area forsupplying those specialty products.

“We are currently mining at the 220-foot level,” saidBill Hedl, sales representative for Dyer Quarry, as he

served as our tour guide when PennsylvaniaAggregate and Concrete Association members whotook a tour of the facility in mid-year 2012. “The min-ing site is 4400-feet long and 1100-feet wide,” hesaid. “We are permitted down to 460-feet, butcurrently, we are at 220-feet. In a good year, we willapproach two million tons of production, so we areprepared for the foreseeable future.”

Hedl explained that shot rock is brought to theprimary crusher in any of seven haul trucks current-ly available at the plant. “We have four 773s; one 769and two 990s,” he said. “They dump the material intoour 6084 Birdsboro Buchanan Jaw Crusher. It wasmade here in the county in 1926. It has been busy

crushing ever since. It’s a pretty remarkable crusher.”From there, the rock is conveyed to the processing

plant where it is put through dual 30-inch gyratorycrushers and screened into a number of products.Approximately half Dyer’s aggregate is loaded into railcars in the facility’s train car loading system. Theremaining material goes out via truck.

“We re-screen and wash the aggregate before load-ing it into railcars,” said Hedl. “The material goesfrom the plant to the tipple on a 42-inch load belt andcan be loaded into railcars at the rate of 1000 tonsper hour. We have our own switch engine so that wecan move the cars around and get them filled quick-ly. We have siding space for about 200 railcars.”

Hedl said that there are approximately 20 workerson site when the quarry is in full operation. Theirprimary product line is a very dense material thatranges from 2.96 to 3.0 g/cm3. Some of the lineupincludes 3’inch, 67s, 57s, 8s and Sand. He said thaton the production side of the plant operations, muchof the equipment is installed in a parallel configura-tion so that downtime is minimal. If repairs need totake place, there is a parallel crusher, screen, orconveyor to keep the material flowing while the workon the non-operational equipment is being done.

Comprised of 525 acres of land, thefacility is served by the Norfolk Southern Rail Line.With the recent addition of the company’s newhydraulic truck scales and main office building,trucks can easily be weighed, ticketed and on the wayto their destinations. cuse area survey supplycompany. “I often get in-quiries from my clients,”explains owner PamFeatherstone, “for infor-mation about utility de-tection equipment. Afterlistening to a UIT presen-

tation about the utilityinvestigation process atthe New York State Asso-ciation of ProfessionalLand Surveyors (NYS-APLS) Conference in Jan-uary in Saratoga Springs,New York, I decided to in-

vite the program presen-ter, Carol Parenzan Smal-

ley, to be a guest in mybooth at Hard Hat.”

During the NYSAPLSprogram, Smalley, an en-gineer by degree and theNortheast Director ofBusiness Developmentfor UIT, shared with heraudience that simplybuying a Radio Frequen-cy (RF) Pipe and CableLocator or Ground Pene-trating Radar (GPR)equipment is equivalentto purchasing a medicalCAT scanner withoutconsulting with a radiolo-gist to interpret the imag-ing results. “Televisionshows, such as CSI, havethe potential to misrepre-sent the industry,” sheexplains. “Bones buriedbeneath the surface donot simply show up onthe monitor. At UIT, wehave a staff of scientistsand geophysicists thatanalyze the data. Part ofmy job involves educatingpotential clients to ex-plain the capabilities andlimitations of geophysicalequipment.” Smalley willbe available to answerquestions from Hard Hatattendees during the twoday show at FeatherstoneSupply at Booth 50 in theMain Hall.

“We have found hu-man remains, however,”counters Smalley. “Al-though we’re not CSI, wedo work with state agen-cies, archeologists andcemetery owners to iden-tify disturbances in thesubsurface, such as hu-man burials and historicfoundations, but this isnot the main focus ofour business.”

UIT works primarilywith project owners, engi-neers and contractors tolocate and map under-ground utilities. The firm,with offices in Latham,NY; Huntsville, AL and

Orlando, FL, has worked throughoutthe country. “We recently completed thefield work for a subsurface investigationat a wastewater treatment plant in up-state New York,” states Smalley. “Over athree week period, we used geophysicalequipment, including UIT’s TerraVisionII®, a multi-channel GPR system de-signed by UIT, to locate and capturesubsurface data points throughout theutility dense plant. The data is now withour staff for interpretation and mappingand will be shared with the civil engi-neer of record for use in his design of aflood wall to protect the treatment plantfrom future adverse weather condi-tions.” The information will later beshared with the contractor to preventutility damage during the constructionphase of the flood wall. The detailed un-derground utility map of the plant willfind a final home with the facility engi-neers, as a reference for daily opera-tions and future design and construc-tion projects.

UIT’s geophysical toolbox holds morethan RF and GPR. On a project for NewYork City Department of EnvironmentalProtection’s Catskill Aqueduct, UIT em-ployed Time Domain ElectromagneticInduction (TDEMI) to locate a series ofthree 9-feet, 5-inch diameter, buriedpipelines. “We liken electromagnetic in-duction,” explains Smalley, “to a metaldetector on steroids”. For this project,we used another UIT exclusive productcalled MetaVision II® to locate and mapthe pipelines.” UIT couples its geophys-ical equipment with industry standardsurvey equipment, including a RTK GPSreceiver and a laser robotic total station,for collection of high-precision geo-ref-erenced location information.

“Not all of our projects involve de-tailed location and mapping,” concludesOsterhoudt. “We often work with con-tractors to locate and mark utilities onactive project sites. But unlike the stan-dard One Call system, we are not limit-

ed to a specific utility type; utility com-pany or even what is shown on therecords. UIT investigates the entire

project area to accurately locate theutilities known to exist on site and theones you didn’t know were there.”
