IMPORTANT NOTICE ISU Extension Updates on COVID-19 As you know, in early March, ISU President, Dr. Wendy Winter-steen, announced that the remainder of spring classes at ISU will be online, the majority of students will be moved out of the dorms, spring commencement ceremonies have now been can-celled and all meetings should be cancelled, postponed or virtu-alized through May 31, 2020. The state of Iowa is under a Public Health Disaster Emergency, which includes a directive that all gatherings of more than 10 people be canceled or moved online until the declaration is lifted. As part of Iowa State University, all Extension and Outreach events and gatherings, including 4-H and volunteer led, will also be postponed or cancelled through May 31st. Here are some updates:

Club & Project Group Meetings: Club and Project Group meetings may tentatively still meet on June 1st or later.

Horse Project Group: First meeting is scheduled for June 4th

at the Hardin County Fairgrounds. Please see page 6 for details. Project Leader, Patty Hammer, encourages kids to practice what you learned last summer. Don't just mindlessly ride. Practice steering, stopping and backing. Work on transitions: walk to trot and back down to trot, trot to lope and back down to trot, etc. Put out some old wood posts on the ground, ride over them. Challenge your horse and yourselves! Make sure you are follow-ing the facebook site: Hardin Co. 4H Horse Program.

Dog Project Group: First meeting scheduled for June 1st, 7 PM, at the Hardin County Fairgrounds. Make sure you are follow-ing the facebook site: Hardin County 4H Dog Obedience. If you have any questions in the meantime, feel free to call Martin Stei-ner at 641-849-0329.

Livestock ID Deadline: The May 15 livestock ID deadline was moved to June 1. This applies to ALL 4-H and FFA livestock that are usually identified by May 15 including: Breeding Beef, Dairy Cattle, Dairy Goat, Dog, Horse, Meat Goat, Llama, Sheep and Swine. Rabbits and Bottle calves will remain at the June 15 dead-line.

Sheep and Meat Goat Weigh-In: We will not be able to have a sheep and meat goat weigh-in this year. 4-Hers will be required to arrange a time to pick up tags, and tag and ID their own mar-ket sheep and meat goats this year in 4HOnline. A photo of the sheep/goats, with the tag inserted, will also be a required upload in 4HOnline. Instructions for picking up tags are on pg. 12.

Overnight 4-H Trips: All overnight 4-H trips will be cancelled

this summer (through August 31st). This includes the Intermedi-ate Trip, CWF, State Conference, and the Tri-County Junior Camp.

Members and Leaders, re-enrollment in 4-H or Clover Kids be-gan on September 1st and takes just a few minutes at https://iowa.4honline.com. Anyone who was enrolled in the past has a 4HOnline account. Paper enrollment forms are still available year from your leader or may be downloaded from our web-site. Fees: The State 4-H Enrollment fee is $30. However, the profits from the 4-H Food Stand at Fair pay for half of this fee, so Har-din County 4-H Members only pay $15. An additional $15 late fee will be included for members who enroll after December 1st. Clover Kids - ask your leader about your own club fees as this differs from 4-H. Some 4-Hers choose not to join clubs. Enrollment fees for independent members is $30 due to not working in the 4-H Food Stand or hosting a shift in the Youth Building at Fair.

ENROLL IN 4-H!

Accepting applications for 2020/21 County Council

Senior 4-Hers, do you want to take your 4-H experi-ence to the next level? Then we challenge you to join County Council! The Hardin County 4-H Youth Council is a group of 9th-12th grade 4-H members who are ambassadors of the 4-H program and are positive role models for younger 4-H members. Council members must be willing to take time for Council business and assume responsibility of plan-ning, coordinating, or assisting at events like the Hardin County Fair. The purpose of County Council is to develop leader-ship, citizenship, life management skills, and serve as a liaison between clubs, the community, and Ex-tension staff in creating positive youth experiences for Hardin County 4-H. While our activities will bene-fit and serve the youth in Hardin County, we also want to provide opportunities to improve YOUR 4-H experience as well. Interested 4-H members should complete the appli-cation by June 15th. Interviews will occur at the fair and new members selected will be announced at the fair. Current County Council members must ap-ply and interview every year.

This helps us know who to get important horse information to, and covers the insur-ance liability issues. Participants not complying will be sent home until they are enrolled. Non 4-H members and siblings too young for 4-H should not attend 4-H Horse Project meetings due to not being covered under our insurance policy. **Due to class cancellations due to COVID-19 restrictions, we will only be requiring exhibitors to attend at least one Horse Pro-ject class to be eligible to show their horse at the Hardin County Fair. All K-12th graders are eligible to show a bucket bottle calf at the Hardin County Fair. This is an excellent opportunity for 4-Hers and Clover Kids to learn about raising a calf! Calves must be born between March 1 and May 31, 2020. If purchased, the calf must be in possession of the exhibitor within 2 weeks of birth. All bucket bottle calves need ear tags for identification. You may use your own tags or the Extension Office has tags available for you to pick up.

4-H AND FFA BUCKET/BOTTLE CALVES A competitive class is available for 4th-12th grade 4-H and FFA members. The ribbon placing at the fair is based on what the exhibitor has learned, general health and well-being of the calf, and knowledge of caring for and cleanliness of the calf. Calf’s conformation and exhibitor showmanship are not evaluated. 4-H members may ID calves in 4hOnline up until May 15th or at https://hardin.fairentry.com when entering animal for fair. A bucket bottle calf record book must be completed by all 4-H and FFA participants and may picked up at the Extension Office or found on our website, https://www.extension.iastate.edu/hardin/content/4-h-and-ffa-livestockanimal-projects-1. Rec-ord books must be completed and turned in before interviews at the Hardin County Fair on Friday, July 10th.

YOUTH GRADES K-3 BUCKET/BOTTLE CALVES A non-competitive class will be held for Kindergarten – 3rd graders in Hardin County. K-3 exhibitors may identify calf on Entry Form A or at https://hardin.fairentry.com.

OTHER YOUTH GRADES K-3 ANIMAL SHOWS Other non-competitive opportunities for youth grades Kinder-garten through third, to exhibit animals at the fair include: pets, rabbits, lambs, and meat goat. All K-3 youth show participants will need to enter animals by June 15th. Animals may be entered at

https://hardin.fairentry.com or on Entry Form A, which will be available soon on our website or in the Extension Office. See the Fair Book for more specific details on each class. For K-3 pigs and llamas, please contact the Hardin County Fair Board at 641-373-4809.

4-Hers for 4-H Every year the State 4-H Council sponsors the Iowa 4-Hers for 4-H Campaign, which raises money to fund projects that bene-fit 4-H members throughout the state. 4-Hers investments contribute to providing financial assistance to help 4-Hers attend 4-H camp or conference, helping members from low-income families pay part of their annual 4-H program fee, and funding for the State 4-H Youth Conference, which keeps regis-tration fees affordable for everyone. Each 4-H club in Iowa is asked to donate a minimum of $3.00 per member to the campaign. All clubs that meet the $3.00 per member goal will receive a special campaign certificate. This campaign is coordinated BY 4-Hers to SUPPORT 4-Hers and showcases just how much Iowa 4-Hers care about their 4-H Program. Thank you in advance for being a part of this spe-cial project! You can find a link to the donation form at: https://www.iowa4hfoundation.org/en/ways_to_give/4hers_for_4h/ Please submit this form, along with a voucher to [email protected] by May 15th, and we will send all Hardin County Donations to the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Thank you!

YQCA: 2020 INFORMATION

Important Information for ALL Livestock Exhibitors YQCA (Youth for the Quality Care of Animals) certification is required for all market, dairy, and egg-laying animal exhibi-tors wishing to show at the Hardin County or Iowa State Fairs. This includes beef, bottle calves, dairy goats and dairy cattle, sheep, meat goats, pigs, rabbits, and poultry.

FSQA will no longer be accepted in 2020. YQCA is the only form of certification accepted in 2020 by Iowa 4-H.

If you did not attend the NCIA Youth Beef Conference in Feb-ruary, your final option is to take the online course. Go to YQCA.org and take the online training, using your 4HOnline

login information. The fee is $12.00. YQCA must be complet-ed before you enter your animals for fair!

Please contact Lori Hardman if you have any questions, [email protected] or 641-648-4850.

Club Can-Sculpture Contest at Fair!

New Club Challenge Class and county-wide citizenship project!

All Hardin County 4-H Clubs are challenged to participate in the Can-Sculpture Club Competition to help re-stock non-perishable goods in our local food banks. These items will be needed now more than ever! Here are the guidelines:

1. Open to all Hardin County 4-H Clubs.

2. Clubs must sign up by June 15th.

3. Each club who pre-registers will get a 5 x 5 foot area in Com-munity Building on the Fair Grounds.

4. There are no theme requirements.

5. Please refrain from using copyrighted subject matter for your theme.

6. All structures are to be made mostly of unopened food cans or boxes of shelf-stable dry goods and are supposed to be self-supported if possible. The safety of the fair-goers should be the main concern when the 4-Hers are building the structure. Please know that reinforcing the structure to be secure and to not fall over is more important than creating a structure with-out reinforcement. Minimal use of items like tape, string, thin wire, etc. are allowed to secure the sculpture as long as they do not damage the food packaging. There will be roping/barriers available to keep fairgoers at a short distance away from the displays. Sculpture deemed unsafe or unstable will be disassembled.

7. Each club may decide where their own canned goods will be

donated and are also responsible for moving the structure from the exhibit building promptly after fair, as well as deliver-ing the donated goods.

8. Please create a sign to display with the structure at the Hardin County Fair that designates where the food will be donated. This way, fairgoers will realize that this is also a citizenship pro-ject.

9. Items may be wrapped in paper, etc., as long as the package is not altered, colored (painted, etc.), or changed in any way. Be aware, food pantries will not accepted damaged goods, like a soup can without a label or a box that has been opened.

10. Structure set-up will occur on Thursday of the fair, from 9 AM to 8 PM.

11. Structures/Sculptures will be judged in two ways:

12. Structures will be judged by “People’s Choice” Ballot from 4:00 PM on Thursday to 2:00 PM on Sunday. To vote, fairgoers will put coins in the jar of the sculpture they vote for (jars located in the Youth Building for security purposes). The winning club will be recognized at the 4-H Awards Banquet. Money collect-ed will be donated to a Hardin County charity of the winning club’s choosing, in their name.

13. Structures will also be judged by amount of items they are donating. One item will equal one full package. For example, 1 soup can = 1 item. One package of 2 rolls of paper towels = 1 item, not 2. Winning clubs will be recognized at the 4-H Awards Night and the 1st place club will receive $50 towards a commu-nity service project.

Club Booth Contest

Clubs are encouraged to add some pizazz to the Youth Building by decorating their booth for the Club Booth Contest. Judging will be based on: 1.) Club Representation - Is the club name displayed prominently and are the members represented? 2.) Creativity - Is it fun, colorful, original? Does it draw your attention to the booth? 3.) Interpretation/Use of Theme - 2020 Theme "Strive for Gold". Oth-er choices are: “4-H is…”; “Join 4-H”; “Grow 4-H”; and “How do you 4-H” (State Fair Theme). 4.) Quality of Workmanship - Well done, not messy, neat appearance, effort put in to it. 5.) Use of Available Space - Not based on number of exhibits club has, but more about organization and presentation. Is the backdrop the only part deco-rated, or is the design carried on to the tables and the rest of the display area, etc? Think about the entire space. The Youth Building will be open on Monday, July 6th from noon to 3:30 PM for decorating. Clubs may also decorate during confer-ence judging. Judging will take place after noon on Wednesday, July 8th. Clubs will be awarded as follow: 1st place - $50, 2nd place - $30, 3rd place - $20. All other participating 4-H clubs will receive $10.
