HARDWARE - SECURITY
INTRODUCTION• Computer Hardware are the delicate parts of the
computer system. Problem in hardware components results into malfunction of system and lost or corruption of file.
• So hardware components should be made secure from the factors like dust, fire, theft, over voltage,
over heat.
• Hardware Security refers to the protection of computer
hardware from the physical factors like fire, heat, incorrect voltage, dust as well as from being stolen.
MEASURES OF HARDWARE SECURITYID CardRegular MaintenanceInsuranceFree from Smoke and DustProtection from FireProtection from TheftAir Condition SystemPower Protection Devices
ID CardIncreased securityWith ID and access control measures in place you will have a more secure work or academic environment, where staff and students will all feel safer and more secure.Increased transparency
With both ID cards and access control you will have greater transparency of who is entering a room,at what time and which room they are entering.
Save MoneyWith an access control and ID solution
in place, you can save on environments costs by eliminating print waste and reduce energy bills by cutting energy usage in lesser used rooms amongst many other cost cutting measures that can be implemented.
Increased convenienceAccess control and ID solutions provide a convenient and secure way for your users to go about their business.Access control provides a robust security system and ID cards have multiple applications, increasing user convenience.
INSURANCEǾThe computer is the most valuable and
expensive property for the organizations and business.
ǾSometime the data stored in the computer are lost ue to fire, system failure, etc. In that condition the organization bear the great loss.
ǾSo insurance of the computer should be done so that we can claim insurance amount in case of the lost or damage of computers.
Regular MaintenanceComputer maintenance is the practice of keeping computers in a good state of repair.
Hardware maintenance helps us to find out problems in hardware so that the can be repaired before causing great problem.
As human needs regular health check up to maintain good health computers also need regular maintainance for smooth functioming.
Example: If the cooling fan is not working properly and stopped frequently, it should be repaired on time else it results into over heating of system and finally damage microprocessor.
Free from Dust and SmokeExtreme dust particles damage computer’s
electronic components which use diodes, chips, transistors.EFFECTS OF DUST AND SMOKE ON HARDWARE
COMPONENTSDust act as an insulating blanket on the conductor lines
which results into low performance of system due to disturbance of dust on conductors
Dust particles entered into cooling fan increase pressure on the fan and the fan may break or malfunction.Smoke overheating or even short circuits of the delicate electrical components of computer.
SOLUTIONComputer Room should be carpeted as
carpet act as dust absorber.CDs.DVDs and external HD drive should
be kept inside protecting jacket.Computer peripherals and the inner part
of sysem unit should be cleaned regularly using brush or
air blower.Computer should be kept on the desk or
table not on the floor.Smoking in the computer room should be
prohibited and computer should not be kept in smoke releasing places like kitchen.
There must be fire extinguisher in the computer rooms as a emergency device to put off fire and prevent from great loss.
Smoke detectors or fire alarm can be used in the large computer labs.
Fire is very dangerous which damages the whole computer system.
The short circuit(failure in electrical circuit)in electric wires and circuit may cause fire.
PROTECTION FROM THEFT
Being a valuable device there is great probability of theft of hardware components of the computers so it should be kept at secure place.
MEASURES TO PROTECT COMPUTER FROM THEFTThe doors of computer room should be
strong and protected by modern security system like Fingerprint Lock, ID card lock, Burgular alarm.
(Burglar alarm: the alarm which rings loud when someone tries to beak the security system)CCTV cameras should be installed to
inspect the activities done in the computer room.
(Should be installed such that it can’t be disabled or damaged by thief but give clear view of the activities inside the room.)There should be quick notification system
if unauthorized person tries to enter the room.
• Since the computer produces heat, they should be kept in well ventilated room.
• Circulation of fresh and dust free air keeps the room temperature down and also makes the user active.
• There must be Cooling System(Air Condition System) if the computers are to be operated continuously for more than 8 hours to prevent the computers from over heating
AIR CONDITION SYSTEM
Spike GuardSPIKES: sudden occurance of overload voltage upto2000V caused due to lightning and power-line faultsetc.Spike guard is the device which removes the spike voltage and prevents our computer from short circuit and damage of the system
UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)
• It is the all in one device which protects computer system from power failure and fluctuation of electric current.
• It also provides automatic power backup in case of sudden powercut.
• It uses battery to store electricity as backup.
• Volt Guard• It is the power protection device that
protect the computer system from fluctuation of electric voltage.• It provides constant voltage between 220-240v during the high voltage or low Voltage and protect our system from damage.
Power Protection Device• Computer requires electricity to run.
• Required voltage= 220-240volt(AC)
• Sudden change in voltage, high voltage, fluctuation in voltage
damages the system along with it’s peripherals.
• Power problems can also damage the hard disk and
corrupt the files.• So, power protection devises
should be used to overcome these problems.
Voltage Stabilizers• The common device which protects the
computer system from frequent power failure and incorrect voltage.
• It generates fixed output voltage of a preset magnitude that remains constant regardless of changes to it’s input voltage or load conditions.
