A Candy Bouquet Workshop will be
taught on Tuesday, February 7th at 10:00 a.m. Those attending will make a small Valentine’s Day bouquet.
Emergency Food
Storage is the next Homemakers Training School and will be taught on Thursday, February 9th at 10:00 a.m. Danielle Barrett, FCS Agent in Knox County, will be the instructor.
Registration for “Get Moving Kentucky—Walk Harlan County” will be March 1st-March 10th with the Walking Program beginning on March 13th (see enclosed flyer for more details.) Pat Duncan will be leading exercises on each
Tuesday (March 14-May 2) at 10:00 a.m. to attend.
Jewelry Workshops will be taught on Thursday, March 2nd and Tuesday, March 7th at 10:30 a.m. The project is a cross necklace with pearl and iridescent beads accented with a touch of gold and earrings to match. Cost is $15.
A Tie Workshop will be held on Thursday,
March 16th, at 10:00 a.m. You will choose one of three projects to com-plete. Kits will be provided. All those at-tending need to bring a sewing machine.
An Area Needlework Seminar will be held
in Clay County on Friday, March 17th from 10:00 a.m.—3:00 p.m. See the enclosed brochure for more information and for a registration form.
Area Homemakers Council and Leader
Training will be in Laurel County on March 28th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The Homemaker Lesson for the month of February is “Downsizing Your Home” and is included in this newsletter.
The Homemaker Lesson Ballot for 2017-
2018 is enclosed. Please make your choices and return the ballot to our
office before February 17th.
1/2 pound ground beef 1/2 can low-sodium kidney beans (drained) 1/2 can low-sodium vegetarian beans 1/2 cup onion (diced) 1 teaspoon chili powder 2 1/2 cups low-sodium tomato juice 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1. In a medium-size pot, brown ground beef
over medium to high heat for 8 to 10 minutes until done. Drain fat.
2. Add kidney beans, vegetarian beans, onions, chili powder, tomato juice and
pepper. 3. Cook over low heat for about 40 minutes.
Serve hot.
5 sweet potatoes 4 apples 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup margarine 1 teaspoon nutmeg 1/4 cup hot water 2 tablespoons honey 1. Boil sweet potatoes in water until almost
tender. Cool. Peel and slice. Peel the apples. Remove the cores and slice.
2. Preheat oven to 400 degrees and grease a casserole dish with butter or marga-rine.
3. Put a layer of sweet potatoes on the bot-tom of the dish. Add a layer of apples. Add sugar, salt and tiny pieces of marga-rine. Repeat.
4. On the top layer of apples, sprinkle the rest of the brown sugar and margarine. Sprinkle with nutmeg. Mix hot water & honey together and pour over the top layer.
5. Bake for 30 minutes or until apples are tender.

Learn how to do:
Colonial Candle Wicking: Participants will
learn how to make traditional colonial knots as
they create a candle wicking project on muslin.
Cost is $6.00 for all supplies. Taught by Mary
Hixson. Limit 10.
Arm Knitting: Using a large bulky yarn, you
can use your arms to knit an easy scarf. No
knitting experience is needed. Materials will be
provided but there is a $5 fee. Limit 6. Taught
by Matti Daniels.
Lacey Tatted Earrings: Tatting is an old craft
for making lace and other decorative
ornamentation. This craft is portable and easy to
learn creating complex pieces with simple
stitches. During this class you will learn the
basics of needle tatting while creating a pair of
lovely earring. Taught by Tina Bledsoe. Limit
10. No charge.
Knitting: Learn how to do the knit and purl
stitch and other stitches which will lead to
making many items such as scarves, hats
sweaters, vest, and dishcloths. All supplies
furnished. Taught by Pat Klink. Limit 10. No
charge.
Knifty Knit Toboggans: Make adorable
knitted toboggans without any knitting
experience. These cute hats are made from a
loom. Once you make one you'll make them for
your entire family. It only takes a couple of
hours to make a toboggan. Taught by Judi
O’Bryan. Limit 10. No charge.
Basic Embroidery: Learn basic stitches for
embroidery while stitching a Morning Glory
design. Bring 2 shades of green embroidery
floss and 2 shades of a color for flowers (purple,
pink, blue or yellow). Needles and design
transferred to a background fabric will be
provided. ¼ of design completed. Taught by
Hazel Jackson. Limit 10. No charge
Smocking: an embroidery technique used to
gather fabric so that it can stretch. Smocking can
be used not only in clothing, but to make pillows
and ornaments. All materials to make a
smocking sample will be furnished at no cost.
Directions for a pillow and an ornament will
also be included. Taught by Glenna Wooten.
Limit 10. No charge.
Crochet: Learn the art of crochet to make
sweaters, scarves, dish cloths and other items
with yarn and needle. Limit 10. No charge.
Needlepoint: A heritage needlework stitch
done on canvas. Taught by Jennifer Klee. Limit
10. No charge.
Red Work: Embroidery stitch done all in red
on cotton fabric. Taught by Lora Lee Frazier
Howard. Limit 10. No charge.

How do we get moving? Get Moving Kentucky — Walk Harlan County! is an 8-week physical activity program. Everyone who participates is a winner, with new skills for fitness and health as their prize! Almost everyone can benefit from physical activi-ty. Whether you exercise every day or have never done a regular physical activity, you can join this community physical activity program.
Registration: March 1—March 10, 2017 Walking Program begins March 13th and ends May 5th
Walking Logs Due: by May12th
(T-Shirts will not be ordered until after this date) T‐shirts will be given to those who complete the program and return their logs.
How do I sign up? Fill out a registration form and
bring or mail it to the Harlan County Extension Office
(519 South Main Street).
What will I have to do? Keep track of your activity and record it on
a log. Be active at least 3 times a week (but more is better!). Activity is recorded in
minutes or hours.
What counts as a Physical Ac vity?
Constant activity such as gardening, yoga, aerobics, dancing, raking, sweeping,
walking, etc.
T-shirts will be given out in the Extension Office June 1st and 2nd
Log sheets must be returned to receive a T-shirt.
Pat Duncan will be leading walking and chair exercises at the Depot
on Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. Call 573-4464 if you would like to participate.
