Congratulations! With the purchaseof the Harman Kardon AVR35 you areabout to begin many years of listeningenjoyment. The AVR35 has been customdesigned to provide all the excitementand detail of movie sound tracks andevery subtle nuance of musical selec-tions. With on-board Dolby* DigitalDecoding, the AVR35 delivers six discretechannels of audio that take advantage ofthe digital sound tracks from the latestDVD and LV releases, as well as futureHDTV broadcasts.

While complex digital systems are hard at work within the AVR35 to make all ofthis happen, hookup and operation aresimple. Color-keyed connections and acomprehensive programmable remotecontrol make the AVR35 easy to use.

To obtain maximum enjoyment fromyour new receiver, we urge you to take afew minutes to read through this manual.This will ensure that connections tospeakers, source playback units and otherexternal devices are made properly. Inaddition, a few minutes spent learningthe functions of the various controls willenable you to take advantage of all thepower the AVR35 is able to deliver.

Description and FeaturesThe AVR35 is a full-featured A/V receiver,incorporating a wide variety of listeningoptions. In addition to Dolby Digitaldecoding, Dolby Pro Logic* and Dolby 3Stereo are available for compatibilitywith the tens of thousands of movies andtelevision programs encoded with analogsurround information. A choice of Halland Theater modes is also available foruse with both encoded sources and tradi-tional two-channel stereo recordings.

A total of four audio/video inputs, as wellas two additional audio-only inputs, andan FM stereo/FM/AM tuner are availablefor the utmost flexibility. Front-panel A/Vinputs simplify connections to videogames or camcorders.

The AVR35’s powerful amplifiers usetraditional Harman Kardon High-CurrentDesign philosophies to meet the widedynamic range of any program selection.

Important Safety Information

Verify Line Voltage Before UseYour AVR35 has been designed for usewith 120-volt AC current. Connection to aline voltage other than that for which itis intended can create a safety and firehazard, and may damage the unit.

If you have any questions about the volt-age requirements for your specific model,or about the line voltage in your area,contact your selling dealer before plug-ging the unit into a wall outlet.

Do Not Use Extension CordsTo avoid safety hazards, use only thepower cord attached to your unit. We donot recommend that extension cords beused with this product. As with all electri-cal devices, do not run power cords underrugs or carpets or place heavy objects onthem. Damaged power cords should bereplaced immediately with cords meetingfactory specifications.

Handle the AC Power Cord GentlyWhen disconnecting the power cord froman AC outlet, always pull the plug, neverpull the cord. If you do not intend to usethe unit for any considerable length oftime, disconnect the plug from the ACoutlet.

Do Not Open the CabinetThere are no user-serviceable compo-nents inside this product. Opening thecabinet may present a shock hazard, andany modification to the product will voidyour guarantee. If water or any metalobject such as a paper clip, wire or staple accidentally falls inside the unit,disconnect it from the AC power sourceimmediately, and consult an authorizedservice station.

CATV or Antenna GroundingIf an outside antenna or cable system isconnected to this product, be certain thatit is grounded so as to provide some pro-tection against voltage surges and staticcharges. Section 810 of the NationalElectrical Code, ANSI/NFPA No. 70-1984,provides information with respect toproper grounding of the mast and sup-porting structure, grounding of the lead-in wire to an antenna discharge unit,size of grounding conductors, location ofantenna discharge unit, connection togrounding electrodes and requirementsof the grounding electrode.

NOTE TO CATV SYSTEM INSTALLER:This reminder is provided to call theCATV (Cable TV) system installer’s atten-tion to article 820-40 of the NEC thatprovides guidelines for proper groundingand, in particular, specifies that the cableground shall be connected to the ground-ing system of the building, as close to thepoint of cable entry as possible.

Installation Location To assure proper operation, and to

avoid the potential for safety hazards,place the unit on a firm and level sur-face. When placing the unit on a shelf,be certain that the shelf and anymounting hardware can support theweight of the product.

Make certain that proper space is pro-vided both above and below the unitfor ventilation. If this product will beinstalled in a cabinet or other enclosedarea, make certain that there is suffi-cient air movement within the cabinet.Under some circumstances a fan maybe required.

Do not place the unit directly on acarpeted surface.

Avoid installation in extremely hot orcold locations, or an area that isexposed to direct sunlight or heatingequipment.

Avoid moist or humid locations.

Do not obstruct the ventilation slots onthe top of the unit, or place objectsdirectly over them.

Safety Information

CleaningWhen the unit gets dirty, wipe it with aclean, soft, dry cloth. If necessary, wipe itwith a soft cloth dampened with mildsoapy water, then a fresh cloth with cleanwater. Wipe dry immediately with a drycloth. NEVER use benzene, aerosolcleaners, thinner, alcohol or any othervolatile cleaning agent. Do not useabrasive cleaners, as they may damagethe finish of metal parts. Avoid sprayinginsecticide near the unit.

Moving the UnitBefore moving the unit, be certain to dis-connect any interconnection cords withother components, and make certainthat you disconnect the unit from the ACoutlet.

Unpacking

The carton and shipping materials usedto protect your new receiver during ship-ment were specially designed to cushionit from shock and vibration. We suggestthat you save the carton and packingmaterials for use in shipping if you move,or should the unit ever need repair.

To minimize the size of the carton instorage, you may wish to flatten it. Thisis done by carefully slitting the tapeseams on the bottom and collapsing thecarton down to a more two-dimensionalappearance. Other cardboard inserts maybe stored in the same manner. Packingmaterials that cannot be collapsedshould be saved along with the carton ina plastic bag.

If you do not wish to save the packagingmaterials, please note that the cartonand other sections of the shipping protec-tion are recyclable. Please respect theenvironment and discard those materialsat a local recycling center.

1 Main Power Switch: Press thisbutton to apply power to the AVR35.When the switch is pressed in theunit is placed in a Standby mode, as indicated by the amber LED 3surrounding the System Powercontrol 2. This button MUST bepressed in to operate the unit. Toturn the unit off and prevent the useof the remote control, this switchshould be pressed until it pops outfrom the front panel so that the word“OFF” may be read at the top of theswitch.

NOTE: In normal operation thisswitch is left in the “ON” position.

2 System Power Control: Whenthe Main Power Switch 1 is “ON,”press this button to turn on theAVR35; press it again to turn the unitoff. Note that the Power Indicatorsurrounding the switch 3 will turngreen when the unit is on.

3 Power Indicator: This LED willilluminate in amber when the unit isin the Standby mode to signal thatthe unit is ready to be turned on.When the unit is in operation, theindicator will turn green.

4 Headphone Jack: This jack maybe used to listen to the AVR35’s out-put through a pair of headphones.Be certain that the headphoneshave a standard 1⁄4" stereo phoneplug.

5 Bass Control: Turn this control tomodify the low-frequency output ofthe left/right channels by as much as±10dB. Set this control to a suitableposition for your taste and roomacoustics.

6Treble Control: Turn this controlto modify the high-frequency outputof the left/right channels by as muchas ±10dB. Set this control to asuitable position for your taste androom acoustics.

7 Balance Control: Turn thiscontrol to change the relative volumefor the front left/right channels.

NOTE: For proper operation of thesurround modes this control shouldbe at the midpoint, or “12 o’clock”position.

8 Video 3 Inputs: Theseaudio/video inputs may be used for temporary connection of videogames, camcorders, digital stillcameras or portable audio products.To select a source connected tothese jacks, press the Vid 3 InputSelector @.

9Tape Selector: Press this buttonto select the device connected tothe Tape Monitor jacks a as thelistening source. The previouslyselected source will continue toshow in the Information Display 33, and the red LED above thebutton will illuminate to remind youthat you are listening to the tapemonitor output.

) CD: Press this button to selectthe device connected to the CDInput jacks ∞ as the listeningsource.

! DVD Input: Press this button toselect the device connected to theDVD Play jacks § as the listeningand viewing source.

@ Video Input Selectors: Pressone of these buttons to select asource connected to the rear panelAudio/Video inputs £ ›, or thefront panel Video 3 inputs 8.

# AM/FM: Press this button toselect the tuner as the AVR35’s inputsource. When it is first pressed thelast station tuned will be heard.Press it again to change betweenAM and FM bands.

$ Sleep Button: Press this buttonto place the unit in the Sleep mode.After the time shown in the display,the AVR35 will automatically go intothe Standby mode. Each press ofthe button changes the time untilturn-off in the following order:

%Tuning Button: Press the left side of the button to tune lowerfrequency stations and the right sideof the button to tune higher frequencystations. When a station with a strongsignal is tuned, the TUNED indicatorR will illuminate in the InformationDisplay 33. A brief (1/2 second)press of the button will manuallytune to the next frequency incre-ment, while pressing and holding the button for a longer period willautomatically tune to the next stationwith a signal strong enough foracceptable reception.

^ Preset Scan: Press this button to automatically scan through thestations that have been programmedin the AVR35’s memory. The tunerwill play five seconds of each stationbefore moving to the next presetstation. To stop the scan when thedesired station is heard, press thebutton again. (See page 26 for moreinformation on the tuner memorysystem.)

& Preset Stations Selector: Pressthis button to select stations thathave been entered into the presetmemory. (See page 26 for moreinformation on tuner programming.)

*Tuner Mode: Press this button toselect the stereo or mono mode forFM tuning. In the STEREO mode aStereo indicator P will illuminate inthe information display, and stereoreception will be provided when sta-tions are transmitting stereo signals.In the MONO mode the left and rightsignals from stereo broadcasts willbe mixed together and reproducedthrough all channels. Select MONOfor better reception of weak signals.

( Dolby Digital Selector: Pressthis button to select the Dolby Digitalsurround mode when listening to aprogram that carries the DolbyDigital information. (See pages 22-25for more information on surroundmodes and digital audio.)

Ó Dolby Pro Logic Selector: Pressthis button to select the Dolby ProLogic surround mode when listeningto an analog program that is encodedwith surround-sound information. (Seepages 22–25 for more information onsurround modes.)

Ô Dolby 3 Stereo Selector: Pressthis button to select the Dolby 3Stereo listening mode. This mode isused primarily when a program hassurround information when a centerchannel speaker, but no surroundspeakers, is installed. (See pages22–25 for more information onsurround modes.)

Analog Surround ModeSelectors: Press one of thesebuttons to select the analog sur-round modes. These modes may be used with any analog programsource to create a pleasing surroundeffect. (See pages 22–25 for moreinformation on surround modes.)

ÒTest Tone: Press this button tobegin the sequence of steps used toset the AVR35’s output levels. Whenthis button is pressed, a test tone willreplace the currently selected listen-ing source. (See page 19 for moreinformation on using the test tone toset the output levels.)

Ú Surround Off: Press this buttonto turn off all surround processing,and to listen to a program in tradi-tional stereo from the left front andright front speakers only.

Û Mute: Press this button tomomentarily silence the speakeroutput of the AVR35.

Ù Volume Control: Turn the knobclockwise to increase volume, counterclockwise to decrease thevolume.

ı Delay: Press this button to beginthe sequence of steps required toenter delay time settings. (See page20 for more information on delaytimes.)

ˆ Digital Input Selector: Whenplaying a source that has a digitaloutput, press this button to selectbetween the Optical ‡ and Coaxialfl Digital inputs. (See pages 22–25for more information on digital audio.)

˜ Set Button: When makingchoices during the setup and con-figuration process, press this buttonto enter the desired setting, asshown in the Information Display33, into the AVR35’s memory. (Seepages 17–24 for more information onsetup and configuration.)

¯ Channel Select: Press thisbutton to begin the process ofselecting and configuring theAVR35’s output channels. (See pages 17–24 for more information onsetup and configuration.)

33 Information Display: Thisdisplay delivers messages andstatus indications to help youoperate the receiver. (See page 7 for a complete explanation of theInformation Display.)

34 Remote Sensor Window: Thesensor behind this window receivesinfrared signals from the remote con-trol. Aim the remote at this area anddo not block or cover it unless anexternal remote sensor is installed.

Front Panel Information Display

A Mute: This indicator illuminates to remind you that the AVR35’s out-put has been silenced by pressingthe Mute button Û `. Press theMute button again to return to thepreviously selected output level.

B Bypass: This indicator illumi-nates when the surround processinghas been disabled by pressing theSurround Off button Ú. When thisindicator is lit, the AVR35 will playtraditional stereo sound using thefront left and front right speakersonly.

C Analog: This indicator illuminateswhen an analog input source is in use.

D Dolby Digital Indicator: Thisindicator illuminates when a DolbyDigital source is being played.

E Optical Source: This indicatorilluminates when a digital source is in use via a connection to theOptical Digital input ‡.

F Analog Dolby Surround ModeIndicators: These indicators illumi-nate when one of the analog (matrix)Dolby Surround modes is in use.

G Coax Source: This indicator illu-minates when a digital source is inuse via a connection to the CoaxialDigital input fl.

H AC-3* Indicator: This indicatorilluminates when the AVR35 isdecoding a Dolby Digital inputsource.

I PCM Indicator: This indicatorilluminates to show that a standardPCM (SP/DIF) digital audio signal is being decoded by the digital-to-analog converter.

J Analog Surround ModeIndicators: These indicators illumi-nate when one of the DSP generatedanalog surround modes is in usewith an analog input source.

K Night Indicator: This indicatorlights when the AVR35 is in the Nightmode, which prevents the AVR35from loud playback when digitalsources are in use.

L Preset Number: This two-digitdisplay indicates the station presetnumber that is currently in use, orthat is being entered.

M Preset Indicator: This indicatorilluminates when one of the stationsentered into the preset memory istuned. The number that appearsbelow the indicator is the presetstation’s memory.

N Memory: This indicator flasheswhen entering presets and otherinformation into the tuner’s memory.

O Auto: This indicator illuminateswhen the “Auto” mode is in use forFM tuning.

P Stereo Indicator: This indicatorilluminates when an FM station isbeing tuned in stereo.

Remote Control Functions

IMPORTANT NOTE: The AVR35’sremote may be programmed to con-trol up to five additional devices,including the AVR35. Before usingthe remote, it is important to remem-ber to press the Device ControlSelector button b c that corre-sponds to the unit you wish to oper-ate. In addition, the AVR35’s remoteis shipped from the factory to oper-ate the AVR35 and Harman KardonCD players and cassette decks. Theremote is also capable of operatinga wide variety of other productsusing the control codes that are partof the remote. Before using theremote with other products, followthe instructions on pages 28–29 toprogram the proper codes for theproducts in your system.

It is also important to remember thatmany of the buttons on the remotetake on different functions, depend-ing on the product selected usingthe Device Control Selectors. Thedescriptions shown here primarilydetail the functions of the remotewhen it is used to operate theAVR35. (See pages 28–31 for infor-mation about alternate functions forthe remote’s buttons.)

wTransport Controls: These con-trols do not control any functions ofthe AVR35, but they are used exten-sively when operating a wide varietyof CD players, cassette decks andVCRs. (See page 28 for informationon programming the remote to utilizethese buttons.)

x Delay/Prev Ch.: Press this but-ton to begin the process for settingthe delay times used by the AVR35when processing surround sound.After pressing this button the delaytimes are entered by pressing theSet button j, and then using the⁄ /¤ buttons h to change the set-ting. Installation and Connections

System InstallationAfter unpacking the unit, and placing iton a solid surface capable of supportingits weight, you will need to make theconnections to your audio and videoequipment. These steps need to be doneonly when the receiver is first installed,or when a change is made to the inputsource equipment.

Audio Equipment ConnectionsWe recommend that you use high-qualityinterconnect cables when making connec-tions to source equipment and recordersto preserve the quality of the signals.

When making connections to audiosource equipment or speakers it is alwaysa good practice to unplug the unit fromthe AC wall outlet. This prevents any pos-sibility of accidentally sending audio ortransient signals to the speakers that maydamage them.

1. Connect the analog output of a CDplayer to the CD inputs ∞.

NOTE: When the CD player has bothfixed and variable audio outputs it is bestto use the fixed output unless you findthat the input to the receiver is so lowthat the sound is noisy, or high that thesignal is distorted.

2. Connect the Play/Out jacks of a cas-sette deck, MD or other audio recorder tothe Tape Monitor In jacks a. Connectthe Record/In jacks on the recorder tothe Tape Monitor Out jacks b on the AVR35.

3. Connect the output of any digitalsources to be used to the appropriateconnections on the AVR35 rear panel.Note that the Optical and Coaxialdigital inputs ‡fl may be used witheither a Dolby Digital (AC-3) source or the output of a conventional CD or LV player’s PCM (SP/DIF) output.

4. Assemble the AM Loop Antenna sup-plied with the unit as shown below.Connect it to the AM and GND screwterminals ¡.

5. Connect an FM antenna to the FM (75 ohm) connection ™. The FM antenna may be an external roofantenna, an inside powered or wire leadantenna or a connection from a cable TV system. Note that if the antenna orconnection uses 300-ohm twin-leadcable, you must use the 300-ohm-to-75-ohm adapter supplied with the unit to make the connection.

6. Connect the front, center andsurround speaker outputs •ª‚

to the respective speakers.

To assure that all the audio signals arecarried to your speakers without loss ofclarity or resolution, we suggest that youuse high-quality speaker cable. Manybrands of cable are available, and thechoice of cable may be influenced by thedistance between your speakers and thisreceiver, the type of speakers you use,personal preferences and other factors.

Your dealer or installer is a valuableresource to consult in selecting theproper cable.

Regardless of the brand of cable selected,we recommend that you use a cable con-structed of fine, multistrand copper with agauge of 14 or smaller. Remember that inspecifying cable, the lower the number,the thicker the cable.

Cable with a gauge of 16 may be used forshort runs of less than ten feet. We do notrecommend that you use cables with anAWG equivalent of 18 or higher due tothe power loss and degradation inperformance that will occur.

Cables that are run inside walls shouldhave the appropriate markings to indicatelisting with UL, CSA or other appropriatetesting agency standards. Questions aboutrunning cables inside walls should bereferred to your installer or a licensedelectrical contractor who is familiar withthe NEC and/or the applicable localbuilding codes in your area.

When connecting wires to the speakers,be certain to observe proper polarity.Remember to connect the “negative” or“black” wire to the same terminal on thereceiver and the speaker. Similarly, the“positive” or “red” wire should be con-nected to the like terminal on the AVR35and speaker.

We also recommend that the length ofcable used to connect speaker pairs beidentical. For example, use the samelength piece of cable to connect the frontleft and front right or surround left andsurround right speakers, even if thespeakers are a different distance fromthe AVR35.

Installation and Connections

NOTE: While most speaker manufacturersadhere to an industry convention of usingblack terminals for negative and red onesfor positive, some manufacturers mayvary from this configuration. To assureproper phase, and optimal performance,consult the identification plate on yourspeaker, or the speaker’s manual to verifypolarity. If you do not know the polarity of your speaker, ask your dealer for advice before proceeding, or consult the speaker’s manufacturer.

7. Connections to a subwoofer are madevia a line-level audio connection fromthe Subwoofer Output ¶ to the line-level input of a subwoofer with a built-inamplifier. If a passive subwoofer is used,the connection first goes to a poweramplifier, which will be connected to oneor more subwoofer speakers.

Video Equipment ConnectionsVideo equipment is connected in a fashionsimilar to audio components. Again, theuse of high-quality interconnect cables isrecommended to preserve signal quality.

1. Connect a VCR’s audio and videoPlay/Out jacks to the Video 1 In jacks£ on the rear panel. The audio andRecord/Out jacks on the VCR should beconnected to the Tape Monitor Outjacks b on the AVR35.

2. Connect the audio and video outputsof a satellite receiver, cable TV converteror television set or any other video sourceto the Video 2 In jacks ›.

3. Connect the audio and video outputsof a DVD or laser disc player to the DVDjacks §.

4. Connect the TV Monitor Out fi

jacks on the receiver to the video input of your television monitor or video projector.

System and Power Connections

The AVR35 is designed for flexible usewith external control components andpower amplifiers. These connections areeasy to make during an initial installa-tion, or at a later date should you chooseto upgrade your system.

Remote Control ExtensionIf the receiver is placed behind a solid orsmoked glass cabinet door, the obstruc-tion may prevent the remote sensor fromreceiving commands. In this event, anoptional remote sensor may be used.Connect the output of the remote sensorto the Remote Cont. In jack °.

If other components are also preventedfrom receiving remote commands, onlyone sensor is needed. They may use thisunit’s sensor or a remote eye by runninga connection from the Remote Cont.Out jack · to the Remote In jack onHarman Kardon or other compatibleequipment.

AC Power ConnectionsThis unit is equipped with two accessoryAC outlets. They may be used to poweraccessory devices, but they should not beused with high-current draw equipmentsuch as power amplifiers. The total powerdraw may not exceed 50W to each outlet.

The Switched ¤ outlet will receivepower only when the unit is on. This isrecommended for devices that have nopower switch, or a mechanical powerswitch that may be left in the “ON” position.

NOTE: Devices with electronic powerswitches may only go into a Standbymode when plugged in here.

The Unswitched ⁄ outlet will receivepower as long as the unit is plugged intoa powered AC outlet.

Finally, when all connections are com-plete, plug the power cord into a non-switched 120-volt AC wall outlet. You’realmost ready to enjoy the AVR35!

System Configuration

When all audio, video and system con-nections have been made, there are a fewconfiguration adjustments to be made. Afew minutes spent to correctly configureand calibrate the unit will greatly add toyour listening experience.

Speaker Selection and PlacementThe placement of speakers in a multi-channel-home-theater system can have a noticeable impact on the quality ofsound reproduced.

No matter which type or brand of speakersis used, the same model or brand ofspeaker should be used for the front left,center and right speakers. This creates aseamless front soundstage, and elimi-nates the possibility of distracting sonicdisturbances that occur when a soundmoves across mismatched front-channelspeakers.

Speaker PlacementDepending on the type of center-channelspeaker in use and your viewing device,place the center speaker directly above orbelow your TV or in the center behind aperforated front projection screen.

Once the center-channel speaker isinstalled, position the left and right front speakers so that they are as faraway from one another as the center-channel speaker is from the preferredlistening position. Ideally, the front-channel speakers should be placed sothat their tweeters are no more than 24"off center from the tweeter in the center-channel speaker.

Depending on the specifics of your roomacoustics and the type of speakers in use,you may find that imaging is improvedby moving the front left and right speak-ers slightly forward of the center-channel

speaker. If possible, adjust all front loudspeakers so that they are aimed atear height when you are seated in the listening position.

Using these guidelines, you’ll find that ittakes some experimentation to find thecorrect location for the front speakers inyour particular installation. Don’t beafraid to move things around until thesystem sounds correct. Optimize yourspeakers so that pans across the front ofthe room sound smooth, and that soundsfrom all speakers appear to arrive at thelistening position at the same time with-out delay from the center speaker asopposed to the left and right speakers.

Surround speakers should be placed onthe side walls of the room, at or slightlybehind the listening position. The centerof the speaker should face into the room.The speakers should be located so thatthe bottom of the cabinet is at least twofeet higher than the listeners’ ears whenseated in the desired area.

If side wall mounting is not practical, thespeakers may be placed on a rear wall,behind the listening position. Again, theyshould be located so that the bottom ofthe cabinet is at least two feet higherthan the listeners’ ears. The speakersshould be no more than six feet behindthe rear of the seating area.

Subwoofers produce non-directionalsound, so they may be placed almostanywhere in a room. Subwoofer place-ment is highly influenced by room sizeand shape, and the type of subwooferused. Follow the instructions of the sub-woofer’s manufacturer, or experimentwith the best location for a subwoofer inyour listening room.

System SetupOnce the speakers have been placed in theroom and connected, the final step in thesetup process is to enter the settings thatconfigure the AVR35’s bass managementsystem for the type of speakers used inyour system, the calibration of the outputlevels and the delay times used by the sur-round sound processor. Before proceedingfurther, this is a good time to review theinstallation section of the manual tomake certain that all connections areproperly made.

You are now ready to power up the AVR35to begin these final adjustments.

1. Plug the Power Cable ‹ into anunswitched AC outlet.

2. Press the Main Power Switch 1

in so that it latches in with the “OFF”wording on the top of the switchinside the front panel. Note that thePower Indicator 3 will turnamber, indicating that the unit is inthe Standby mode.

3. Install the three supplied AAA batteriesin the remote as shown. Be certain toobserve the (+) and (–) polarityindicators shown in the bottom of thebattery compartment.

4. Turn the AVR35 on either by pressingthe System Power Control 3onthe front panel, or via the remote byfirst pressing the AVR Selector a,and then pressing the Power buttond . The Power Indicator 3 willturn green to confirm that the unit ison, and the Information Display ˝

will also light up.

Speaker ConfigurationThe first few adjustments tell the AVR35which type of speakers are in use. This isimportant as it adjusts the settings thatdetermine which speakers receive low-frequency (bass) information. For eachof these settings use the LARGE setting ifthe speakers for a particular position aretraditional full-range loudspeakers thatare capable of reproducing sounds below100Hz. Use the SMALL setting for small-er, frequency-limited satellite speakersthat do not reproduce sounds below100Hz. Note that when “small” speakersare used, a subwoofer is required toreproduce low-frequency sounds.Remember that the “large” and “small”descriptions do not refer to the actualphysical size of the speakers, but theirability to reproduce low-frequencysounds. If you are in doubt as to whichcategory describes your speakers, consultthe specifications in the speakers’ owner’smanual, or ask your dealer.

With the AVR35 turned on, follow thesesteps to configure the speakers:

1. Put the AVR35 in the Dolby Pro Logicmode by pressing the Dolby ProLogic Selector Ó on the frontpanel or by pressing the SurroundMode Selector gon the remote,followed by the ⁄ /¤ buttons huntil PRO LOGIC appears in theMain Information Display S andthe PRO LOGIC indicator F lights.

2. Press the Speaker button z˘ onthe remote or front panel. The wordsFRNT SPEAKERwill appear in theMain Information Display S .

3. Press the Set button j˜.

4. Press the ⁄ /¤ buttons h on theremote or the Selector buttons¸on the front panel until eitherLARGE or SMALL appears to matchthe type of speakers you have at theleft front and right front positions, asdescribed by the definitions shownbelow.

When SMALL is selected, low-frequency sounds will be sent to thesubwoofer output only. Note that ifyou choose this option, and there isno subwoofer connected, you willnot hear any low-frequency soundsfrom the front channels.

When LARGE is selected, a full-range output will be sent to thefront left and right outputs, and NO low-frequency signals will besent to the subwoofer output.

5. When you have completed yourselection for the front channel, pressthe Set button j˜, and thenpress the ⁄ /¤ buttons h on theremote or the Selector buttons¸on the front panel to change thedisplay to CEN SPEAKER.

6. Press the Set button j˜ again,and use the ⁄ /¤ buttons h on the remote, or the Selector buttons¸ on the front panel, to select theoption that best describes your systembased on the speaker definitionsshown above.

When CEN SP SMALL is select-ed, low-frequency center-channelsounds will be sent to the subwooferoutput only. Note that if you choosethis option and there is no sub-woofer connected, you will not hearany low-frequency sounds from thecenter-channel speaker.

When CEN SP LARGE is select-ed, a full-range output will be sentto the center speaker output, andNO center-channel signal will besent to the subwoofer output.

When CEN SP NONE is selected,no signals will be sent to the center-channel output. The receiver willoperate in a “phantom” center-channel mode and center-channelinformation will be sent to the left-and right-front-channel outputs.

7. When you have completed yourselection for the center channel, pressthe Set button j˜, and thenpress the ⁄ /¤ buttons h on theremote or the Selector buttons¸on the front panel to change thedisplay to SUR SPEAKER.

8. Press the Set button j˜ again,and then use the ⁄ /¤ buttons hon the remote or the Selectorbuttons¸ on the front panel toselect the option that best describesyour system based on the speakerdefinitions shown above.

When SUR SP SMALL is select-ed, low-frequency surround chan-nel sounds will be sent to thesubwoofer output only. Note that ifyou choose this option and there isno subwoofer connected, you willnot hear any low-frequency soundsfrom the surround speaker.

When SURSPLARGE is selected, afull-range output will be sent to thesurround-channel outputs, and NOsurround-channel signals will be sentto the subwoofer output.

When SUR SP NONE is selected,surround-sound information will besplit between the front-left and front-right outputs. Note that for optimalperformance when no surroundspeakers are in use, the Dolby 3 Stereo mode should be used instead of Dolby Pro Logic.

9. When you have completed yourselection for the surround channel,press the Set button j˜, and then press the ⁄ /¤ buttons h on the remote or the Selector buttons¸on the front panel to change the displayto SÐW SPEAKER.

10. Press the Set button j˜, and then press the ⁄ /¤ buttons h on the remote or the Selector buttons¸on the front panel to select the optionthat best describes your system.

Select S-W SP ON if a subwoofer is connected to your system.

Select S-W SP OFF if a subwoofer isNOT connected to your system. Notethat when no subwoofer is selected,low-frequency sounds below 100Hzwill be sent to the front left/rightspeakers, provided that the selection in step 4, above, has been set toLARGE. Otherwise, no low-frequencysounds will be heard. This option isnot available when the front, center orsurround speakers are set to SMALL.

11. When all speaker selections havebeen made, press the Set button j˜ to return to normal operation.

Output Level AdjustmentOutput level adjustment is a key part ofthe configuration process for any sur-round sound product. It is particularlyimportant for a Dolby Digital receiversuch as the AVR35, as correct outputs willensure that you hear sound tracks in theirproper place with the proper intensity.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Many listeners areoften confused about the operation of thesurround channels. While some assumethat sound should always be coming fromeach speaker, most of the time there willbe little or no sound in the surroundchannels. This is because they are onlyused when a movie director or soundmixer specifically places sound there tocreate ambiance, an effect or to continueaction from the front of the room to therear. When the output levels are properlyset it is normal for rear/surround speakersto operate only occasionally. Artificiallyincreasing the volume to the rearspeakers may destroy the illusion of anenveloping sound field that duplicates theway you hear sound in a movie theater orconcert hall.

Before beginning the adjustment processmake certain that all speaker connectionshave been properly made. The systemvolume should be set to the level that you will use during a typical listeningsession. Finally, make certain that theBalance Control 7 is set to the center“12 o’clock” position.

To adjust and calibrate the output levels,follow these steps. For accurate calibration,it is a good idea to make these adjustmentsfrom the location in your room that isyour favorite listening position:

1. Put the AVR35 in the Dolby Pro Logicmode by pressing the Dolby ProLogic Selector Ó on the frontpanel or by pressing the SurroundMode Selector gon the remote,followed by the ⁄ /¤ buttons huntil PRO LOGIC appears in theMain Information Display S andthe PRO LOGIC indicator F lights.

2. Press the Test Tone button Ò

on the remote or front panel. Thewords T -T FL 0dBwill appearin the Main Information DisplayS , and the letters FLwill flash onceeach second.

3. At this point, the test noise will beginto circulate among all the speakers ina clockwise rotation.

NOTE: This is a good time to verifythat the speakers have been properlyconnected. As the test noise circulates,listen to make certain that the soundcomes from the speaker positionshown in the Main InformationDisplay. If the sound from a speakerlocation does NOT match the positionindicated in the display, turn theAVR35 off and check the speakerwiring to make certain that eachspeaker is connected to the correctoutput terminal.

4. After checking for speaker placement,let the test noise circulate again, andlisten to see which channels soundlouder than the others. Using thefront left (FL in the display) speakeras a reference, press the ⁄ /¤ buttonsh on the remote or the Selectorbuttons¸ on the front panel oneach channel to begin to bring themto the same level. Note that when oneof the buttons is pushed, the test noisecirculation will pause on the channelbeing adjusted to give you time tomake the adjustment. When yourelease the button, the circulationwill resume.

5. Continue to adjust the individualspeakers until they all have the samevolume. Note that adjustmentsshould be made with the ⁄ /¤

buttons h on the remote or theSelector buttons¸ on the frontpanel only, NOT the main volumecontrols. Then press the Set buttonj˜ to memorize the change. Ifyou are using a sound pressure (SPL)meter for precise level adjustment, setthe volume so that the meter reads75dB, C-Weighting Slow.

NOTE: The subwoofer output level is notadjustable using the test tone. To changethe subwoofer level, follow the steps forOutput Level Trim Adjustment on page 27.

6. When you have adjusted the outputsso that all channels have the samelevel, press the Test Tone button

Delay SettingsOne aspect of the surround modes is thedelay of audio signals between the frontspeakers and the rear speakers. Eachsurround mode is factory preset with aspecific delay time, but it is possible toindividually adjust the delay timing tocustom tailor the sound to your individ-ual taste and the acoustic conditions inyour listening room or home theater.

The factory setting is appropriate formost rooms, but some installationscreate an uncommon distance betweenthe front and surround speakers that maycause the arrival of front channel soundsto become disconnected from surroundchannel sounds.

To resynchronize the front and surroundchannels, follow these steps:

1. Measure the distance from thelistening/viewing position to thefront speakers.

2. Measure the distance from thelistening/viewing position to thesurround speakers.

3. Subtract the distance to the surroundspeakers from the distance to thefront speakers.

a. When setting the delay time for theDolby Digital surround mode, theoptimal delay time is the resultingfigure. For example, if the frontspeakers are ten feet away and thesurround speakers are five feetaway, the optimal delay time isfigured as 10–5=5. Thus, in thisexample, the delay should be set atfive milliseconds.

b. When setting the delay time for the Pro Logic mode, take the resultof the subtraction and add 15 toobtain the optimal delay time. Forexample, if the front speakers areten feet away and the surroundspeakers are five feet away, theoptimal delay time is figured as 10–5+15=20. Thus, in thisexample, the delay should be set at twenty milliseconds.

The Dolby Digital mode also provides aseparate setting for the center-channel-delay mode, since the discrete nature of Dolby Digital signals makes thelocation of the center-channel speakermore critical. To calculate the delay forthe center channel, measure the distancefrom the preferred listening position inthe center of the room to both the center-channel speaker and either the left orright speaker.

NOTE: The Theater, Hall 1 and Hall 2modes use a fixed, non-adjustable delay time.

If the distances are equal no furtheradjustment is required and the centerdelay should be set to zero. If the distanceto the front speakers is greater than thedistance to the center speaker you maywish to reposition the speakers by movingthe front left/right speakers closer to thelistening position or the center speakerfurther away from the listening position.

If repositioning of the speakers is notpossible, adjust the center delay time sothat you add one millisecond of center-channel delay for each foot that thedistance to the center speaker lagsbehind the front speakers. For example,if the front left/right speakers are each 10 feet from the listening position andthe center-channel speaker is 8 feet away, the delay is figured as 10–8=2,suggesting an optimal center delay of 2 milliseconds.

To set the delay times, follow these steps:

1. Put the AVR35 in the Dolby Pro Logicmode by pressing the Dolby ProLogic Selector Ó on the frontpanel, or by pressing the SurroundMode Selector gon the remote,followed by the ⁄ /¤ buttons huntil PRO LOGIC appears in theMain Information Display S andthe PRO LOGIC indicator F lights.

2. Press the Delay button xı on the remote or front panel. The words S DELAY TIMEwill appear in theMain Information Display S .

5. If no adjustment is needed for the center-channel delay, press theSet button j˜ to enter thesetting into the AVR35’s memory. If the calculations outlined above for the center-0channel delay requirean adjustment, proceed with thefollowing steps:

12. Press the ⁄ /¤ buttons h on the remote until the desired delaytime for the center channel appearsin the display.

13. Press the Set button j˜ to enterthe setting into the AVR35’s memory.

Congratulations! You have now completedthe setup, adjustment and calibration ofthe AVR35. You are now ready to enjoy thefinest in music and home-theater listening.

Operation

Basic Operation

Once you have completed the setup andconfiguration of your new receiver, it issimple to operate and enjoy. The follow-ing instructions will provide the stepsneeded to enjoy the AVR35:

• When using the AVR35 for the firsttime, it is necessary to press the MainPower button 1 on the front panel toturn the unit on. This places the unit in astandby mode, as indicated by the ambercolor of the Power Indicator 3 . Oncethe unit is in standby, you may begin alistening session by pressing the SystemPower Control 2 on the front panel orthe Power button d on the remote.Note that the Power Indicator 3 willturn green. This will turn the unit on andreturn it to the input source that was lastused. The unit may also be turned onfrom standby by pressing any of theSource Selector buttons on the remotel or front panel 9)!@#.

To turn the unit off at the end of a listen-ing session simply press the SystemPower Control 2 on the front panelor the Power button d on the remote.Power to any equipment plugged into the rear panel Switched AC Outlet¤ will be shut off and the PowerIndicator 3 will turn amber.

When the remote is used to turn the unit“off” it is actually placing the system in astandby mode, as indicated by the ambercolor of the Power Indicator 3.

When you will be away from home for an extended period of time it is always a good idea to completely turn the

unit off using the front panel MainPower Switch 1. Note that all presetmemories are lost if the unit is leftturned off with the Main PowerSwitch 1 for more than two weeks.

Source Selection

• To select a source at any time, pressany of the Source Selector buttons on the remote l or front panel 9)

may be used to connect a device such asa video game or camcorder to your homeentertainment system on a temporarybasis.

• When an audio source is selected thelast video input used remains routed tothe Video Outputs 1 ¢ and TVMonitor Output fi. This permitssimultaneous viewing and listening todifferent sources.

• During a listening session you maywish to adjust the Bass 5 and Treble6 controls to suit your listening tastes.

• Adjust the volume to a comfortablelevel using the front panel VolumeControl Ù or remote VolumeUp/Down buttons.

• To temporarily silence all speakeroutputs press the Mute button ` Û. This will cut the output to all speakers,but it will not effect any recording ordubbing that may be in progress. Whenthe system is muted the MUTE indicatorA will light in the InformationDisplay ˝. Press the Mute button `Û again to return to normal operation.

• For private listening, plug the 1/4"stereo phone plug from a pair of stereoheadphones into the front panelHeadphone jack 4.

• When a Video Input source is selectedthe video signal for that input will berouted to the TV Monitor Video Outputjack fi and will be viewable on a TV mon-itor connected to the AVR35. Make certainthat your TV is set to the proper input toview the signal.

• To program the AVR35 for automaticturn off, press the Sleep button e$.Each press of the button will increase thetime before shut down in the followingsequence:

The sleep time will be displayed in theInformation Display and it will countdown until the time has elapsed.

When the programmed time has elapsedthe unit will automatically turn off. Note that the front panel display will dimto one half brightness when the Sleepfunction is programmed. To cancel theSleep function, press the Sleep buttone$ until the information displayreturns to normal brightness and theSleep indicator numbers disappear.

Surround Mode Selection

One of the most important features of the AVR35 is its ability to reproduce a fullmultichannel surround sound field fromDolby Digital sources, analog matrix surround encoded programs and stan-dard stereo programs. In all a total ofseven listening modes are available onthe AVR35.

This mode is available only when the source material is encoded with Dolby Digital(AC-3) data. It provides up to five separate main audio channels and a special dedi-cated Low-Frequency Effects channel.

Dolby Pro Logic is the standard mode for analog surround sound decoding. It uses information encoded in a two-channel stereo recording to produce four distinct channels: Left, Center, Right and Surround. Use this mode for accurate reproductionof programs bearing the Dolby Surround, DTS Stereo, UltraStereo or other“Surround” logos. Surround encoded programs include videocassette, DVD and LDmovies, TV and cable programs, radio programs and audio CDs. Dolby Pro Logic processing may also be used to provide a pleasing surround effect with some stereophonic source material that does not carry surround encoding.

Dolby 3 Stereo uses the information contained in a surround encoded or two-channelstereo program to create center-channel information. In addition, the informationthat is normally sent to the rear channel surround speakers is carefully mixed in withthe front left and right channels for increased realism. Use this mode when you have acenter-channel speaker, but no surround speakers.

Theater Surround processing uses matrix surround decoding to simulate a standardmovie or stage theater.

These modes are designed for use with stereo recordings. They provide a sound-fieldeffect that simulates the complex combination of direct and reflected sounds that create the rich reverberant atmosphere of a medium-sized concert hall (Hall 1) or alarger concert hall (Hall 2).

This mode turns off all surround processing and presents the pure left and right channel presentation of two channel stereo programs.

Note that the Dolby Digital Mode mayonly be selected when a Dolby Digitalsource is playing. For more informationon Dolby Digital, see the following sectionof this manual.

To listen to a program in traditional two-channel stereo, using the front left andfront right speakers only (plus the sub-woofer if installed and configured), pressthe Surround Off buttonÚ on thefront panel, or follow the insturctionsshown above for using the remote untilSURR OFF appears in the MainInformation Display S. When theAVR35’s surround circuits are turned off,and it is in the Stereo mode, the BYPASSindicator B will illuminate in theInformation Display ˝.

Digital Audio Playback

Dolby DigitalDolby Digital (also known as AC-3) is thelatest advancement in surround-soundtechnology, delivering up to five full-range surround channels (left, center,right, left surround and right surround)plus a special dedicated Low-FrequencyEffects (LFE) channel. This represents amajor advancement over traditionalanalog surround in that each surroundchannel is fully discrete and capable offull bandwidth reproduction. DolbyDigital is available on DVD and LV discs,and it will be a part of the new high-definition television (HDTV) systemwhen digital broadcasting begins in1998. Dolby Digital for the home is basedon the same system used to deliver digitalaudio sound tracks in movie theaters,enabling true cinema reproduction inyour home.

To utilize the Dolby Digital mode youmust have a digital source properlyconnected to the AVR35. Connect theDigital datastream outputs from DVDplayers, HDTV receivers and CD players tothe AC-3/PCM Coaxial or Opticalinputs on the rear panel fl‡. In orderto provide a backup signal and a sourcefor recording, the analog outputs providedon digital source equipment should alsobe connected to their appropriate inputson the AVR35 rear panel (e.g., connect theanalog stereo audio output from a DVD tothe DVD inputs § on the rear panelwhen you connect the digital outputs.)

When playing back a digital source, firstselect the input using the remote or frontpanel controls as outlined above. Nextselect the digital source by pressing theappropriate Digital Input button yˆ and then using the ⁄ /¤ buttons gon the remote or the Selector buttons¸ on the front panel to choose eitherCOAXIAL or DIGITAL, as it appearsin the Main Information Display S.Press the Set button j ˜ to enter thedesired choice. When the digital source is playing, the AVR35will automatically detect if it is a multi-channel Dolby Digital source or a con-ventional PCM signal, which is thestandard output from CD players. Anindicator will light in the InformationDisplay to confirm the digital signal isAC-3 H or PCM I and if the source isOPTICAL E or COAX G.

When an AC-3 source is playing, theAVR35 will automatically switch to theDolby Digital surround mode. It is impor-tant to note, however, that not all AC-3sources are encoded with the full comple-ment of five channels plus LFE. When adigital source is playing, the MainInformation Display S will change toshow the input source and digital type(OPTICAL or COAX). When a source withDolby Digital encoding is playing, theinput source name will appear in theInformation Display, followed by anumeric key to the type and number of channels being decoded as follows:

Night ModeA special feature of Dolby Digital is theNight mode, which enables AC-3 inputsources to be played back with their fullrange while reducing the minimum peaklevel by 1/4 to 1/3. This prevents abruptlyloud transitions from causing distur-bances without reducing the impact ofthe digital source. The Night mode isavailable only when AC-3 signals withspecial data are being played.

To engage the Night mode, press theNight buttonk on the remote andnote that the NIGHT indicator K willilluminate in the Information Display.

IMPORTANT NOTES ON DOLBY DIGITAL PLAYBACK:

1. When the digital playback unit is in apause, fast forward or chapter searchmode the digital audio data maymomentarily stop, causing a NO DATAmessage to be displayed. This is normaland does not indicate a problem witheither the AVR35 or the source machine.The AVR35 will return to DolbyDigital/AC-3 playback as soon as the datais available when the machine is in astandard play mode.

2. The AVR35 will decode digital audiosources with a sampling frequency of32kHz, 44.1kHz and 48kHz. Althoughthis will enable it to decode virtually allDVD movies and HDTV sources, it is pos-sible that some future digital sourcesmay not be compatible with the AVR35.

NOTE: In order to play the Dolby Digitalsignals that are recorded on laser discs,you must have both a laser disc playerwith an RF output, and an optional,outboard RF-to-data demodulator. Tolisten to Dolby Digital LV discs, connectthe AC-3/RF output of the player to thedemodulator, and connect the output of the demodulator to the Coaxial orOptical inputs fl‡ on the rear panelof the AVR35. DO NOT connect the AC-3/RF output of a laser disc playerdirectly to the AVR35.

3. Note that not all programs recorded inDolby Digital contain full 5.1 channelaudio. Consult the program guide thataccompanies the DVD or laser disc todetermine which type of audio has beenrecorded on the disc. The AVR35 willautomatically sense the type of digitalsurrround encoding used on an AC-3program source and adjust toaccommodate it.

4. When a Dolby Digital source isplaying, you may not select any of theanalog surround modes.

5. It is not possible to record the outputof a Dolby Digital program.

PCM Audio PlaybackPCM (Pulse Code Modulation) is thenon-compressed digital audio systemused for compact discs and non-AC-3laser discs. The digital circuits in theAVR35 are capable of high-quality digital-to-analog decoding, and they may beconnected directly to the digital audiooutput of your CD or LV player.

Connections should be made to the AC-3/PCM Optical or Coaxial inputs‡fl on the rear panel, using whicheverinput is not occupied by an AC-3 sourcesuch as a DVD player.

To listen to a PCM digital source, firstselect the input for the desired source(e.g., CD). Next press the Digital buttony ˆ and then using the ⁄ /¤ buttonsh on the remote or the Selectorbuttons¸ on the front panel until thedesired choice of either COAXIALorDIGITAL, as it appears in the MainInformation Display S. Press the Setbutton j ˜ to enter the desired choice.

Operation

When a PCM source is playing, the PCMindicator I will light, and the MainInformation Display will show the inputsource and the digital type. During PCMplayback you may select any surroundmode except Dolby Digital.

Tuner Operation

The AVR35’s tuner is capable of tuningAM, FM and FM Stereo broadcast stations.Stations may be tuned manually, or theymay be stored as favorite station presetsand recalled from a 30-position memory.

Station Selection1. Press the AM/FM button #l toselect the tuner as an input.

2. Press the AM/FM button #l againto switch between AM and FM so that thedesired frequency band is selected.

3. Press the Tuner Mode button *r

to select manual or automatic tuning.

When the AUTO indicator O is illumin-ated in the Main Information Display thetuner will only stop at those stations thathave a strong enough signal to bereceived with acceptable quality.

When the MONO indicator Q is illumin-ated, the tuner is in a manual mode andwill stop at each frequency increment inthe selected band.

4. To select stations press the Tuningbutton %v. When the AUTO indicatorO is illuminated each press will causethe tuner to search for the next highestor lowest frequency station that has anacceptable signal. When tuning FM sta-tions in the Auto mode, the tuner willonly select Stereo stations. To tune to the

next station, press the button again. Ifthe MONO indicator Q is illuminated,tap the Tuning button %v toadvance one frequency increment at atime, or press and hold it to locate a spe-cific station. When the TUNED indicatorR illuminates, the station is properlytuned and should be heard with clarity.

5. Stations may also be tuned directly by pressing the Direct button s, andthen pressing the Numeric Keys n

that correspond to the station’s frequency.The desired station will automatically be tuned.

NOTE: When the FM reception of astation is weak, audio quality will beincreased by switching to Mono mode by pressing the Tuner Mode button *r until the STEREO indicator Pgoes out.

Preset TuningUp to 30 stations may be stored in theAVR35’s memory for easy recall using thefront panel controls or the remote.

To enter a station to the memory, firsttune the station using the steps outlinedabove. Then:

1. Press the Memory button q on the remote. Note that MEMORY indicatorN will illuminate and flash in theInformation Display.

2. Within five seconds, press theNumeric Keys n corresponding tothe location where you wish to store thisstation’s frequency.

3. Repeat the process after tuning anyadditional stations to be preset.

Recalling Preset Stations• To manually select a station previouslyentered in the preset memory, press theNumeric Keys n that correspond tothe desired station’s memory location.

• To manually tune through the list ofstored preset stations one by one, pressthe Preset buttons &u on the frontpanel or remote.

• To automatically scan through the sta-tions entered in the preset memory, pressthe Preset Scan button ^ on the frontpanel. The tuner will run through the listof preset stations, stopping for five secondsat each one. Press the button again to stopthe scan at your desired station.

Tape Recording

In normal operation, the audio or videosource selected for listening through theAVR35 is sent to the record outputs. This means that any program you arewatching or listening to may be recordedsimply by placing machines connected to the outputs for Tape Monitor b orVideo One ¢ in the record mode.

When a tape recorder with separate recordand playback heads is used, you maymonitor the output of the recording byselecting the Tape Selector 9l.Note that a red LED will illuminate in thefront panel above the Tape Selector 9

to remind you that you are listening tothe record playback instead of the actualinput source being recorded.

NOTE: It is not possible to record theoutput of Dolby Digital programs.

Output Level Trim Adjustment

Normal output level adjustment for theAVR35 is established using the Test Tone,as outlined on page 19. In some cases,however, it may be desirable to adjust theoutput levels using program materialsuch as a test disc, or a selection you arefamiliar with. Additionally, the outputlevel for the subwoofer may only beadjusted using this procedure.

To adjust the output levels using pro-gram material, first set the referencevolume for the front left/right channelsusing the Volume Control Ù . Ifyou wish to vary the difference betweenthe left and right channels, use theBalance Control 7.

Once the reference level has been set,press the Channel Select button i¯ and note that FRONT L LEV

will appear in the Main InformationDisplay S. To change the level, firstpress the Set button ˜, and then usethe Selector buttons ¸ or the ⁄ /¤

buttons h to raise or lower the level.DO NOT use the volume control, as thiswill alter the reference setting.

Once the change has been made, pressthe Set button ˜ and then press theSelector buttons ¸ or the ⁄ /¤

buttons h to select the next outputchannel location that you wish to adjust.To adjust the subwoofer level, press theSelector buttons ¸ or the ⁄ /¤

buttons h until S-WOOFER LEV

appears in the Main InformationDisplay S.

Press the Set button ˜ when the nameof the desired channel appears in theMain Information Display S, andfollow the instructions shown above toadjust the level.

Repeat the procedure as needed until allchannels requiring adjustment havebeen set. When all adjustments havebeen made, the AVR35 will return to nor-mal operation when no adjustments aremade for five seconds.

Memory Backup

This product is equipped with a memorybackup system that preserves tuner pre-sets and system configuration informa-tion if the unit is accidentally unpluggedor subject to a power outage. This mem-ory will last for approximately two weeks,after which time all information must be reentered.

Processor Reset

In the rare case where the unit’s opera-tion or the displays seem abnormal, thecause may involve the erratic operation ofthe system’s memory or microprocessor.

To correct this problem, first unplug theunit from the AC wall outlet and wait atleast three minutes. After the pause,reconnect the AC power cord and checkthe unit’s operation. If the system stillmalfunctions, a system reset may clearthe problem.

To clear the AVR35’s entire systemmemory, including tuner presets, outputlevel settings, deley times and speakerconfiguration data, first turn the unit offby pressing and releasing the MasterPower Switch 1 so that it pops outfrom its normal recessed position. Next,press and hold the Sleep $ and theDolby Pro Logic Ó buttons whilepushing the Master Power Switch1 in to turn the unit back on. Note that once you have cleared the memoryin this manner, it is necessary to re-establish all system configurationsettings and tuner presets.

If the system is still operating incorrectly,there may have been an electronicdischarge or severe AC line interferencethat has corrupted the memory ormicroprocessor.

If these steps do not solve the problem,consult an authorized Harman Kardonservice depot.

Programming the Remote

The AVR35 is equipped with a powerfulremote control that will control not onlythe receiver’s functions, but also most CDplayers and cassette decks manufacturedby Harman Kardon. For increased flexi-bility, the remote also contains the codesfor most popular brands of audio andvideo equipment, including CD players,cassette decks, TV sets, cable boxes, VCRs,satellite receivers and other home-theaterequipment. Once the AVR35’s remote isprogrammed with the codes for the pro-ducts you own, it is possible to eliminatemost other remotes and replace themwith the convenience of a single, backlituniversal remote control.


As shipped from the factory, the remote is fully programmed for all AVR35 func-tions, as well as those of most HarmanKardon CD changers, CD players and cas-sette decks. In addition, by following oneof the methods below, you may programthe remote to operate a wide range ofdevices from other manufacturers.

Direct Code Entry

This method is the easiest way toprogram your remote to work withdifferent products.

1. Use the tables in the following pagesto determine the three-digit code orcodes that match both the producttype (e.g., VCR, TV), but also thespecific brand name. If there is morethan one number for a brand, makenote of the different choices.

2. Turn on the unit you wish to programinto the AVR35 remote.

3. Press and hold both the DeviceControl Selector c for the typeof product to be entered (e.g., VCR,TV) and the Mute button ` at thesame time. Hold both buttons untilthe red light under the button stayslit. Note that the next step must takeplace while the red light is on, and itmust begin within 20 seconds afterthe light illuminates.

4. Point the AVR35’s remote towards theunit to be programmed, and enter thefirst three-digit code number using theNumeric buttons n. If the unitturns off, the correct code has beenentered. Press the Device ControlSelector c again, and note thatthe red light will flash twice to confirmthe entry before going dark.

5. If the device to be programmed indoes NOT turn off, continue to enterthe three-digit code numbers untilthe equipment turns off. At this point,the correct code has been entered.Press the Device Control Selectorc again, and note that the redlight will flash twice to confirm theentry before going dark.

6. Try all of the functions on the remoteto make certain that the productoperates. Keep in mind that manymanufacturers use a number of dif-ferent combinations of codes, and itis a good idea to make certain thatnot only the Power control works, but

the volume, channel and transportcontrols, as appropriate. If all func-tions do not work properly, you mayneed to use a different remote code.

7. If a code cannot be entered to turn theunit off, if the code for your productdoes not appear in the tables in thismanual, or if not all functions oper-ate properly, try programming theremote with the Auto Search Method.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The “TAPE” buttonmay be programmed to control a DVD orLD player, instead of a tape deck, by usingthe codes shown on page 32. Similarly,the “CBL/SAT” button may be used tocontrol a cable box, satellite receiver orweb browser box, depending on the codeyou enter.

Auto Search Method

If the unit you wish to include in theAVR35’s remote is not listed in the codetables in this manual, or if the code doesnot seem to operate properly, you maywish to program the correct code usingthe Auto Search method as shown below.

1. Turn on the unit that you wish toinclude in the AVR35 remote.

2. Press the Device Control Selectorc for the type of product to beentered (e.g., VCR, TV) and the Mutebutton ` at the same time. Holdboth buttons until the red light underthe button stays lit. Note that the nextstep must take place while the redlight is on, and it must begin within20 seconds after the light illuminates.

3. Point the AVR35 remote towards theunit to be programmed, and press and hold the Channel ⁄ orChannel ¤ button f. This willsend out a series of codes from theremote’s built-in data base, with eachflash of the red light under the DeviceControl Selector c indicatingthat a code has been sent. When thedevice to be programmed turns off,IMMEDIATELY release the Channel⁄ or Channel ¤ button f.

4. Press the Device Control Selectorc again, and note that the redlight will flash twice to confirm theentry before going dark.

5. Try all of the functions on the remote to make certain that theproduct operates. Keep in mind thatmany manufacturers use a numberof different combinations of codes,and it is a good idea to make certainthat that not only the Power controlworks, but the volume, channel andtransport controls, as appropriate. Ifall functions do not work properly,you may need to Auto-Search for adifferent code, or enter a code via theDirect Code Entry method.

Code Readout

When the code has been entered using theAuto Search method, it is always a goodidea to find out the exact code so that itmay be easily reentered if necessary. Youmay also read the codes to verify whichdevice has been programmed to a specificControl Selector button.

1. Press and hold both the DeviceControl Selector c for the typeof product to be entered (e.g., VCR,TV) and the Mute button ` at thesame time. Hold both buttons untilthe red light under the button stayslit. Note that the next step must takeplace while the red light is on, and itmust begin within 20 seconds afterthe light illuminates.

2. Press the Night button k. The redlight under the Device ControlSelector c will blink in asequence that corresponds to thethree-digit code, with a one-secondpause between each digit. Count thenumber of blinks between each pauseto determine the digit of the code.One blink is the number 1, two blinksis the number 2, and so forth. Tenblinks are used to indicate a “0”.

Example: One blink, followed by a one-second pause, followed by six blinks, fol-lowed by a one-second pause, followed byten blinks indicates that the code hasbeen set to 160.

Programmed Device Functions

Once the AVR35’s remote has been pro-grammed for the codes of other devices,press the appropriate Device ControlSelector c to change the remotefrom control over the AVR35 to the addi-tional product. When you press any of theDevice Control Selectors , it willbriefly flash in red to indicate that youhave changed the device being controlled.

When operating a device other than theAVR35, the controls may not correspondexactly to the function printed on theremote or button. Some commands, suchas the volume control, are the same aswith the AVR35. Other buttons willchange their function so that they corre-spond to a secondary label on the remote.For example, the Sleep and SurroundMode selector buttons also function as theChannel Up and Channel Down buttonswhen operating most TV sets, VCRs orcable boxes. The Channel Up/Down indi-cation is printed directly on the remote.The same is true for standard CD player,cassette deck, VCR and DVD functions,which follow the standard function iconsprinted on top of the buttons.

For some products, however, the functionof a particular button does not follow thecommand printed on the remote. Inorder to see which function a button con-trols, consult the Function List tablesprinted in this manual. To use thosetables, first check the type of device beingcontrolled (e.g., TV, VCR). Next, look atthe remote control diagram pictured onthe following page. Note that each buttonhas a number on it.

To find out what function a particularbutton has for a specific device, find thebutton on the diagram on this page, andthen look at the Function List (pages 32and 33) in the column for the device youare controlling. For example, buttonnumber 29 is the Tuning Down button forthe AVR35, but it is the “Rewind” buttonfor many VCRs. Button number 33 is thePreset Tune Down button for the AVR35,the “Reverse Skip” button for CD playersand the “Page Down” button for somecable boxes.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The numbers usedon these pages to determine the function-ality of a remote button are used for thispurpose only. DO NOT confuse them withthe numbering used in the rest of thismanual to identify the button functionsfor controlling the AVR35.

Notes on Using the AVR35 Remote WithOther Devices.• Manufacturers may use different code

sets for the same product category. Forthat reason, it is important that youcheck to see if the code set you haveentered operates as many controls aspossible. If it appears that only a fewfunctions operate, check to see ifanother code set will work with morebuttons.

• When a button is pressed on the AVR35remote, the red light under theDevice Control Selector c forthe product being operated shouldflash briefly. If the Device ControlSelector flashes for some, but not allbuttons for a particular product, itdoes NOT indicate a problem with theremote, but rather that no function isprogrammed for the button beingpushed.

Macro Programming

The Power button may be programmed tosend out a sequence of up to eight com-mands when it is pushed. This enablesyou to turn on a number of products, and to have a program source turn to afavorite channel or any other command.To program a macro into the Power button, follow these steps:

1. Press either the AVR button b orthe SAT/CBL Device Selectorbutton c and the Mute button` at the same time until the redlight under the Device ControlSelector turns on.

2. Press the Power button d andnote that the Device Control Selectorwill blink once.

3. Enter up to eight macro steps, bypressing the Device Control buttonand then the function button for eachstep you wish to enter. To enter the“Power On/Off” command duringmacro programming, press the Mutebutton `. DO NOT press the actualPower Button.

4. When the eight steps have beenentered, press the Channel ⁄ / ¤

buttons f to enter the commands.The red light under the DeviceControl Selector will blink twiceand then turn off.

Example: To program your TV,Cable Box and the AVR35 to turn onwhen the Power button is pressed,first press-and-hold the AVR b

and Mute buttons ` until the redlight comes on under the AVR but-ton. Next, press the Mute button` to enter the Power commandfor the AVR. Press the TV DeviceControl Selector c to selectthe TV mode, and then press theMute button ` again, to selectTV Power. Finally, press the CBLDevice Control Selector c

followed by the Mute button `to select Cable Power. Press theChannel ⁄ / ¤ buttons f toenter the commands.

After following these steps, each timeyou press the Power button d, theremote will send the Power On/Offcommand each time the Powerbutton is pressed.

To remove a macro program, follow steps1, 2 and 4 above, but do not follow stepthree. For example, to erase the macrojust entered, press the Device ControlSelector c and the Mute button `at the same time until the red lightunder the Device Control Selector turnson. Press the Power button d, andthen press the Channel ⁄ / ¤ buttonsf. The red light under the DeviceControl Selector will blink twice toconfirm the data entry and then turn off.

NOTE: Only the AVR button b and the SAT/CBL button c may be pro-grammed for macros.

Volume Punch-Through

The AVR35’s remote may be programmedto operate the Volume Controlsfrom either the TV or the AVR to operate in

conjunction with any of the eight devicescontrolled by the remote. For example,since the AVR35 will likely be used as thesound system for TV viewing, you maywish to have the AVR’s volume activatedalthough the remote is set to run the TV.Either the AVR or TV volume control maybe associated with any of the remote’sdevices. To program the remote for VolumePunch-Through, follow these steps:

1. Press the Device Control Selectorc for the unit you wish to have asso-ciated with the volume control and theMute button ` at the same timeuntil the red light illuminates underthe Device Control Selector .

2. Press the Volume Up button .

3. Press either the AVR b or the TVDevice Control Selector c,depending on which system’s volumecontrol you wish to have attached forthe punch-through mode. Note thatthe red light under the DeviceControl Selector will blink twiceand then go out to confirm the dataentry.

Example: To have the AVR’svolume control be activated eventhough the remote is set to controlthe TV, first press the TV DeviceControl Selector c and theMute button ` at the same time.Next, press the Volume Up button

followed by the AVR DeviceControl Selector b.

NOTE: Should you wish to return theremote to the original configuration afterentering a Volume Punch-Through, youwill need to repeat the steps shown above.However, press the same Device ControlSelector in steps one and three.

Re-Assigning Device ControlSelectors

Although each of the seven DeviceControl Selectors c is normallyassigned to the category of product shownon the remote, it is possible to re-assignone of these buttons to operate a seconddevice of another type. For example, if youhave two VCRs, but no satellite receiver,you may program the “SAT” button tooperate a second VCR. Before followingthe normal programming steps for eitherThree-Digit entry or Auto Search codeentry, you must first re-assign the buttonwith the following steps:

1. Press the Device Control Selectorc you wish to re-assign and theMute button ` at the same timeuntil the red light illuminates underthe Device Control Selector .

2. Press the Device Control Selectorc for the function you wish toprogram into the re-assigned button.

3. Enter the three-digit code for the spe-cific model you wish the re-assignedbutton to operate.

4. Press the same Device ControlSelector pressed in Step 1 again tostore the selection.

Example: To use the SAT button tooperate a second VCR, first press theSAT Device Control Selectorc, and the Mute button ` atthe same time until the red lightglows under the SAT button. Pressthe VCR button, followed by thethree-digit code for the specificmodel you wish to control. Finally,press the SAT button again.

SYMPTOM

No front panel lights when powerswitch is pressed

Display lights, but no sound or picture

No sound from any speaker. Light around power switch is red

No sound from surround or center speakers

Unit does not respond to remote commands

Intermittent buzzing in tuner

CAUSE

• No AC Power

• Intermittent input connections

• Mute is on• Volume control is down

• Amplifier is in protection mode due to possible short

• Amplifier is in protection mode due to internal problems

• Incorrect surround mode• Input is monaural• Incorrect configuration• Stereo or Mono program material

• Weak batteries in remote• Wrong device selected• Remote sensor is obscured

• Local interference

SOLUTION

• Make certain AC power cord is plugged into a live outlet

• Check to see if outlet is switch controlled

• Make certain that all input and speaker connections are secure

• Press Mute button• Turn up volume control

• Check speaker-wire connections at receiver and speaker ends for shorts

• Contact your local Harman Kardon service depot

• Select a mode other than Stereo• There is no surround information from mono sources• Check speaker mode• The surround decoder may not create center or rear

channel information from non-encoded programs

• Change remote batteries• Press the AVR selector• Make certain front panel sensor is visible to remote

or connect remote sensor

• Move unit or antenna away from computers, fluorescentlights, motors or other electrical appliances
