Ayurvedic Massage CourseIt was a busy and exciting time at the

centre during August when DrSwaroop Verma, an Ayurvedic doctor

from Israel, paid us a special visit. Hekicked off the week's programme with avery well attended talk about the funda-mental concepts of the body types ofVata, Pitta and Kapha and wove in awonderful series of chants and medita-tion. It was a great chance for me tomeet local people with an interest inAyurveda and Yoga. Following the talk, The Harmony Centreprovided the perfect setting for DrVerma's Ayurvedic Marma Massagecourse. People came from all over thecountry; one participant even came from

Scotland. Dr Verma's family has devel-oped this particular technique ofAyurvedic Marma Massage over gen-erations. He is an amazing teacherand, in this style, the movements flowfrom one to the next. My clients havecommented on how much theyenjoyed this new massage treatmentand how good they feel afterwards. We were also treated to deliciousAyurvedic vegetarian food that DrVerma cooked for us: vegetable dahland rice and homemade corianderchutney, lots of organic vegetables andsalads that some students brought infrom their gardens. As food is consid-ered as medicine in Ayurveda, allAyurvedic doctors are expert in prepar-ing and cooking food. It was an appe-tizing and enlightening weekend, andwe look forward to Dr Verma's returnnext year for Part Two follow-up. In the meantime I will be running aseries of Sunday workshops onRituchariya and Dinachariya,Ayurvedic seasonal and daily routines. The changing seasons can influenceour whole neuro-physiology, so we willlearn how we can adapt and balanceour lifestyle and diet in accordancewith the season. See below for detailsof the first workshop.Tanya Bradbury

The onset of winter can bring with it many problems forthose of us who are prone to the vagaries of Vatadosha. This is because winter is also the season of

Vata, cold, windy and often dry. For some the cold is a pleas-ant relief after the heat of summer. But the majority dread theonset of winter, with its lack of sunlight, short days and freez-ing temperatures. Feeling low, along with aches and pains inthe body, dry skin, worry and insomnia are just a few of theaccompanying symptoms.According to Ayurvedic principles, vata dosha is responsiblefor 80% of all disease, so if we can help balance vata we aremore than helping to prevent disease.Balanced doshas and a balanced digestion with proper andtimely removal of waste from the body result in the formationof healthy tissues and the correct functioning of the nervoussystem. This results in a contented happy soul, with a peace-ful mind, devoid of stress. In a one-day workshop we will be examing Vata dosha inmore depth: the qualities of Vata, how to recognize signs andsymptoms of imbalanced Vata and how we can pacify Vatadosha through lifestyle, diet, Yoga and meditation. We will start the day with some mantra chanting and a shortmeditation. The day will also include a practical session, learning a soothing hand and foot massage with a herbalfoot bath and choice of base oils and essential oils for pacify-ing Vata. A warm Ayurvedic lunch will emphasize seasonalVata balancing herbs and spices.Sunday 6th November 9.30 am - 5.30pm Cost: £75Contact Tanya Bradbury M: 07779 583 123T: 01986 798 644 Email: [email protected]

This is a transition time in the year. Schools, college and uni-versity students have begun their new year; some possibly

with apprehension. Parents can see their children moving on andchanging and can find themselves re-evaluating their own lives. It's the time of year where people enrol for day and eveningclasses which they hope will help them to develop new skills andinterests. Most people start off determined, but it can be a strug-gle to keep going as the nights draw in and Christmas prepara-tions loom. Although we’ve enjoyed an Indian Summer, we areaware that the mornings and evenings are getting darker andthat, quite soon, the clocks will go back. Many people find the darker winter months difficult and can evendread the forewarning change in seasons.Where are you with your thoughts and plans at the moment?Does the idea of winter please or worry you? Have there beenchanges in your family environment which you're finding a bithard to deal with?If any issues concern you, either these or others, you may find afew sessions of counselling can really help you face your fearsand move towards overcoming them. If you feel I can help in anyway, please contact me for a free introductory session.Sue Roberts

Generations of health

Please note:The views expressed in this Newsletter are not necessarilythose of The Harmony Centre. Anyone seeking healthadvice should consult a qualified practitioner.

Chiropractic at The Harmony Centre has nearly reacheda decade of offering people of north Suffolk pain reliefand ongoing spinal health. As the practice has grown,

many families have taken advantage of what the combined disciplines of chiropractic and craniosacral therapy can do. Two such families are the Saunders and the Clark/Taylor fami-ly: three generations who attend the Harmony ChiropracticClinic on a regular basis because they have experienced whatchiropractic can do and have made their health a priority.

Jonathon Taylor had reg-ular ear infections whichwere making hearing bothat home and school diffi-cult. This affected hislearning and behaviour. With regular treatmentJonathon is now is ableto participate more fully inclassroom activities and is

better behaved because he can hear better and can now fol-low instructions. His mother Charlotte had a bad car accident this year whichleft her unable to work. Happliy, following a course of chiro-practic treatment she returned to work. The family first became acquainted with chiropractic in June2003 when Laurence came with unsettled behaviour particular-ly in sleep following a difficult birth. He settled well following

For a significantly large and growing number of men, women and teenagers, alcohol takes over their lives to thepoint where relationships, friendships, jobs, morals and

values take second place to their dependency on alcohol. Whena relative or close friend drinks too much it is impossible toremain unaffected by the negative effects of their drinking. Mostpeople are aware of Alcoholics Anonymous, a self-help groupfor problem drinkers, but few know of Al-Anon Family Groups. This is a world-wide fellowship of relatives and friends of alco-holics who believe that alcoholism is a family illness and thatchanged attitudes can aid recovery. The drinkers can successfully hide their dependency, while theirfamily and friends hide concerns and suspicions, preferring tokeep their heads buried in the sand until a crisis forces change. As the drinking progresses the increasing confusion, shame, guilt and anger begin to wreak havoc in all areas of the drinker'slife and, inevitably, relationships deteriorate. It is easy to seehow the progress of a dependency on alcohol takes its toll onthe drinker and makes them ill. The effects on those close to thedrinker are more subtle. Behind closed doors his or her familymay have suffered physical and mental abuse, shame, fear andfinancial insecurity for years. A home life of chaos and unpredictability, watching loved onesacting irrationally, destroying themselves and threatening others, can have a devastating effect on the whole family. If this hashappened to you then you could get help by going to a local Al-Anon Group. At these meetings, members get comfort andunderstanding from others who have been affected. Over a peri-od of time, they learn how to cope with their problems and toaccept alcoholism as an illness. They overcome their preoccu-pation with the drinker and are thus able to focus on their ownlives. At all times the anonymity of members is protected. An Al-Anon Group is now meeting at The Harmony Centreevery Wednesday at 7pm. Contact the Al-Anon office on 0207 40 30 888 or log on to www.al-anonuk.org.uk

treatment. In May 2009mother and grandmotherChristine Clark begantreatment for low backproblems. Even sisterEvelyn has attended.Other more distant mem-bers of this family havevisited the HarmonyChiropractic clinic for painrelief.Janet was the first of the Saunders family to seek help for sci-atic pain and shoulder problems. Janet had benefitted fromchiropractic in the past when she was living in Somerset. Youmay recognise Janet as our relief receptionist. It was Janet who suggested grandchild Adam come for treat-ment for anxiety related symptoms. Both Adam and Holly haveregular treatments to keep their spines healthy. Mother andfather Jane and Martin also use The Harmony Chiropracticclinic for prevention and relief of pain and discomfort. At the Harmony Chiropractic Clinic we see people of all ages, including newborns and the very elderly. Chiropractic may notalways give complete relief but does offer comfort for those inpain and advice for those who need it. We also prescribe exer-cises where useful and improve spinal health.Free spinal checks available on request.Paul Parolin D.C.
