Dear Friends,We developed the first of our Friendly Loom™ Products in the 1980’s in response to a growing demand from educators and parents concerned with introducing ‘hands on’ creative activities to children and teenagers. Our products are designed to provide fun, challenging, educational experiences while developing concentration, fine and gross motor control and a better understanding of spatial relationships and patterning.

In this fast-paced world where children are being forced to grow up too quickly, we believe that it is essential to help them slow things down and experience their creative abilities by introducing them to the joys of working with their hands. As educators and parents, one of our most important challenges is to encourage the development of self-esteem and self-confidence.

Woolen yarn has been spun in the water-powered, brick mill town of Harrisville since 1794. This small village is nestled in the Monadnock Highlands of southwestern New Hampshire and is the only industrial community of the early 19th century, in the United States, that still survives in its original form. In 1977, the Department of Interior designated Harrisville a National Historic Landmark.

The last woolen mill in Harrisville closed in 1970, when the fashion world turned, temporarily, to synthetic double-knit fabrics. We established Harrisville Designs, in 1971, with a goal of preserving the textile heritage and economic vitality that had sustained the village for over two hundred years. Beginning with a line of high quality woolen handweaving and knitting yarns, we soon branched out into handweaving looms and equipment. In the late 1980’s, we developed the first of our Friendly Loom Products to introduce children to the joys of working with their hands.

We are a small, family owned and operated business, and we believe that quality should not be compromised for even the smallest product. Come and visit our unique store which is full of the yarns we make plus yarns from many other companies. We also have a full range of patterns along with many handmade items such as blankets, scarves, and hats. You can sit at one of our looms and try weaving too! There are lots of gift ideas including candles, glassware, and pottery.

Since 1971 we have held workshops to give students the opportunity to study with exceptional instructors in the relaxed atmosphere of this unique village. Our workshops are held on the second floor of the Bethuel Harris Mill which sits at the end of the canal overlooking the mill pond and originally operated on water-power. This beautiful brick building was built in the 1830’s as a spinning mill for locally raised wools and it now houses our retail store on the first floor and provides excellent studio space for our students on the second floor. In order to create the atmosphere of a working studio rather than a classroom, we limit enrollment in our workshops. Consider exploring a new hobby like weaving, knitting, or spinning by taking a class and stepping back in time! Call us for more information.
