TRANSCRIPT
Greetings,
The West Volusia Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of
Colored People is honored to memorialize Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore. The
Moore’s were very instrumental as educator and civil rights activist. In 1934,
Harry T. Moore establish the first NAACP branch in Brevard County. The
Moore’s paved the way for the Civil Rights Movement, in fact they were the only
husband and wife team to lose their lives for the cause.
Just last year, in 2018, State of Florida legislation recognized the third Saturday of
December as the “Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Day” in Florida. Today, our
guest lecturer Former State Representative Patrick Henry was that person to help
make this happen.
The Moore’s were very instrumental in helping to register over 100,000 black
voters in the state of Florida. Harry T. Moore led the fight against injustices on
behalf of the African American population.
As we gather here today, we all value many of the causes of the Moore’s. We can
recite several of Harry T. Moore’s quotes. We are all looking forward to seeing
many movies or documentaries about the Moore’s. However, today we are here to
memorialize their great causes. Their voices are silence…but their causes’ lives
on!
Let’s remember that while Mr. Moore’s mother was visiting him during the
holiday she was concern for his safety and he told her…“Every advancement
comes by way of sacrifice. What I am doing is for the benefit of my race.”
In a few days we will be entering a new year 2020; it will be a very important year
for our community, our state and our nation. Let’s not forget the Moore’s cause.
The WV-NAACP Branch and The Harry T. Moore planning committee hope you
enjoy the lecturer and luncheon regarding Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore. For
they were true heroes and an inspiration to us all!
Best Regards,
Michael Williams

Florida House of Representatives, where he proudly represented
District 26 which encompasses the cities of Daytona Beach, DeLand,
Holly Hill, South Daytona, Orange City, Lake Helen and parts of
Ormond Beach and Port Orange.
Prior to being elected to the Florida Legislature in 2016, Henry served on the Daytona Beach

instrumental in working in a bi-partisan effort to revitalize Daytona Beach’s economy, making

years where he was a mental health counselor. As a State Representative, his focus is criminal

mental health access. During the 2018

These Bill ideas ranged from a proposal to
implement text-to-911 technologies
throughout the state to the successful
passage of a bill that would make
Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune the first
African American to have a statue
representing a state in the United States
Capitol.
In 2018, he also successfully passed
legislation recognizing the third Saturday in December as “Harriette V. & Harry T. Moore Day”

subcommittees: Government Accountability Committee, Agriculture & Natural Resources
Appropriations Subcommittee, Agriculture & Property Rights Subcommittee, Health Innovation

Congratulations
on this great honor
LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING “National Negro Anthem”
Lift Every Voice And Sing, till earth and Heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of liberty; Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won.
Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet, Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered;
Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou Who hast brought us thus far on the way;
Thou Who hast by Thy might, led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee. Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee.
Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand, True to our God, true to our native land.
- James Weldon Johnson
