OBITUARY
MOIR - Cyril George (Cy) of Hartney Manitoba passed away at the Hartney Community Health Centre on
June 8, 2013. It is with heavy hearts we say goodbye to our father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother.
He was predeceased by his wife Kay and is survived by daughters Linda (Brian) Ormonde and Marsha (Dennis)
Wanless and son Jim (Peggy) Moir; grandchildren Wanda (Hugh) Brine, Sean (Tracy) Raison, Kyle Raison,
Michael and Mark Ormonde, and Ben, Evan, Whitney & Mallory Moir; great grandchildren Dylan & Morgan
Boryskiewich, Ava & Chloe Raison along with sisters Edith Hayden, Ruth Mansoff and Brother Harvey (Evelyn)
Moir.
After school graduation Dad worked at the Post Office in Hartney before joining the 5th Canadian Armoured
Division Postal Unit and served overseas in WWII in England, Italy, France, Belgium, and Holland from 1941 -
1946. One returning home he was back in the Post Office in Hartney becoming Postmaster from 1954 - 1980
working for Canada Post for 43 years. Dad was active in all sports - hockey, baseball, curling and golf. Dad
also loved to hunt and fish. His love for the outdoors and of nature was passed on to his children. He
especially loved watching the bluebirds, wood ducks and humming birds. He was quite proud of his
community and always volunteered when asked. He was secretary treasurer for Hartney Junior Sports for
many years as well as a charter member of the BPO Elks. He was very proud to be a Life Member of Hartney
Legion Branch #26, as well as a Life Member of both Hartney Golf Club and Curling Club. Dad loved
interacting with the grandkids, boating and fishing with them, playing catch or just watching their sports events.
He cherished his summers at the cottage in Clear Lake spending many, many hours fishing. He had an
enormous love for music - always tapping his toes to the beat. Dad was a handyman who could always be
found tinkering with his latest project.
Graveside funeral service was held at the Riverside Cemetery on June 12, 2013 with the Hartney Legion
Branch #26 as Honorary Pall Bears. The family would like to give Special Thanks to the wonderful caring and
compassionate staff of the Hartney Community Health Centre. Dad will be sadly missed by all.
Donations in Cy’s memory may be made to the

PHASE 1 POOL PROJECT COMPLETE!
The Hartney Swimming Pool received the first phase of its
“facelift” in June with the pool liner being replaced.
Friends of the Pool (pictured below) have been raising
funds for this project for several years and with lots of
hard work and community support they were able to see
their dream of a new liner come true.
Without the tireless hours that Friends of the Pool put
towards raising money for the pool liner, this project
would not have been possible and the pool would have
eventually had to close - the old liner was on its last legs.
The liner project cost $75 000.00

Kathy Wright, Candy Henderson, Crysti Barrows, Gail Beernaert
& Christina Roper. Missing: Connie Hunt
Fern Valley Recreation would like you to help them welcome their summer students for this year; Kalen Dunn (lifeguard), Melissa Hunt (lifeguard), Mark Phillips (lifeguard), Kasidee Dunn (Pool Administrator) and Brett Phillips (Community Activity Coordinator). Also Carly Roper will be teaching swimming lessons this season.
Watch for events happening throughout the summer around the community and at the pool!
Brett & Kasidee made swimming lesson spectators happy with a tent over the bleachers at the pool to provide some shade!

Calling All Females...
Update from the Manitoba Burrowing Owl Recovery Program
Project partner Turtle Mountain Conservation District
By: Erin Carter
June has been a busy month for us and our burrowing owl pairs. In preparation for the arrival of new owl hatchlings this
summer, we have installed five additional satellite burrows across all three locations. Satellite burrows provide additional spots for
young to move about once they are old enough which prevents overcrowding of young in one burrow, reduces nest predation and
increases overall survival of young. Satellite burrows also provide additional spots for the adults to cached prey items.
Since the last update, we are very happy to report that five of our pairs have a minimum six eggs each. One pair has a
record eleven eggs which is the largest clutch MBORP has seen from captive release pairs in the last 3 years. Unfortunately, there
was a mix-up with the sex of two owls which resulted in a pair of males being placed in one pen. The sex of a burrowing owl is very
difficult to identify based on looks alone. Both males and females look almost identical in size and plumage. Behaviour during the
breeding season is generally a good way to figure out who’s who, but what we’ve noticed over the last few weeks, is that some of
the captive release owls don’t necessarily have the same behaviours as wild owls. The best and most accurate (but not 100%
accurate as sometimes errors can occur) is to take a blood sample from the owl to determine sex. The Assiniboine Park Zoo vets
take these samples for us each year but unfortunately, last fall one of the owls was missed
and we ended up with two males together. We decided to release these two male owls as
singles. It turns out that it’s come in handy to have a couple of extra males this year, as one of
our paired males disappeared over the past week. The male was with a female who had 6
eggs as of June 22nd. After his disappearance, we moved one of the single males with the
female. We do hope she will continue to produce a few more eggs with this male and
incubate the other six. At this point, we have observed the new pair copulating on our over-
night camera a few times. A good sign of breeding. The other four pairs are doing well and
have a total of 37 eggs between them. The very first egg was laid back on June 7th by Dara and
Digger, the star’s of our burrow camera. We expect most nests to begin hatching between
July 7-15. Hatching occurs after a 25-30 day incubation period by the female who generally
start incubating the eggs once there are 4.
We are continuing our surveys in southwest Manitoba to locate any wild burrowing
owls. If you think that you have seen a burrowing owl on your land, please contact the Turtle
Mountain Conservation District at (204) 747-2530. We’d be happy to come out and chat with
you about ways you can ensure the owls have a successful breeding season.
Be sure to come out and see us at Banana Days festival August 10th and 11th. We
will be at the banana site on Saturday morning and doing a presentation and craft for kids at
the Strand theatre in the afternoon. We will also be at the Car show on Sunday. Both days we will have our special guest, Naira, the
Burrowing Owl, out from Prairie Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. So if you’re interested in giving a hoot, come out to see us and buy
one of our awesome owl shirts. All proceeds go MBORP.
For those of you who are interested, you can follow the program’s progress and see videos from the burrow camera on our website at www.mborp.ca and link to our social media site on Facebook, Twitter and Blogger http://burowls-coocoo.blogspot.ca
