This majestic sandstone house, designed in a style that is in keeping withtraditional Penine vernacular architecture, is located on a quiet, rural cul-de-sacon the outskirts of the village of Honley. “We had our hearts set on living inHonley,” says Keith, “as our daughter was due to begin her secondary educationand the village school had an enviable reputation. So we had found the perfectlocation, but initially we were unable to find the perfect house. We thenhappened upon an outstanding piece of land in a stunning location that was dueto be developed, and were lucky enough to persuade the developer to allow usto help design the house of our dreams. Hartfield is the result of some trulyoutstanding craftsmen’s labour, as well as ours, and we have enjoyed twentyvery happy years here.”

Despite being a relatively new build; this attractive property is awash withinteresting features that are typical of the local area. “The kitchen runs theentire width of the property,” continues Keith, “and has mullioned andtransomed timber windows on the front aspect. Not only do they allow light toflood in, creating a wonderfully bright space in which to enjoy informal meals, but they are also a traditional West Riding feature that we feel gives a strongnod to the history of the area.” “Adjoining the kitchen,” continues Susan, “is thesitting room. It is an extremely relaxing versatile area of the house. There is alsoa wonderful transition between indoors and out: as the mood takes us we areable to dine formally in the dining room, informally in the kitchen orconservatory, or alfresco on the patio, adds Keith, “the house also has a greatsense of space”. We love to entertain friends and family and no matter howmany people we have in the house we never feel on top of one another.”“Another rather interesting feature of Hartfield is the weather vane on top ofthe garage,” adds Susan. “It is in the shape of a horse, the legacy of the fact thatthe builder used to manage the dray-horses of Tetley's Brewery in Leeds andhence all his houses bear a horse emblem on them somewhere.”

“We love the garden,” says Sue. “It is such a tranquil, private space. One feelsvery safe and secluded.” “The boundary is a dogwood hedge which blendsperfectly with the beautiful rural aspect,” continues Keith. “From indoors and outone can see for miles over the fields, and beyond to Meltham Moor. We areoften captivated by the glorious sunsets streaming across the fields during thespring, summer and autumn months. It is a real feast for the eyes.”

“The village of Honley, which is just a short stroll from Hartfield, is anoutstanding place,” says Keith, “and has everything one could possibly need interms of shops and amenities. It’s a thriving place, a real oasis away from the bigcities, with an extremely friendly community. Nine times out of ten people willsay ‘hello’.” “We also have Meltham, Holmfirth or Huddersfield just a shortjourney by car,” adds Susan, “allowing us to enjoy the best of both worlds.”

“Often, when one has lived in a certain place for a long time, one inevitablyfinds faults,” says Keith. “We feel that Hartfield and the surrounding area aretruly faultless.” *
