Amelia Wright is not your typical
teenage girl. While the 13-year-old loves tohang out with friends and have fun,her life is more about focus andaccomplishment than partying andsleeping in.
"I'm one of those people who is upat 6 in the morning and plans whatthey're going to do that day," said theeighth grade student at Central MiddleSchool in Hartford.
The recent winner of her school'sTeen Action Group (T.A.G.) anti-bully-ing T-shirt contest, Wright possesses arare self-awareness and confidencethat allows her to be herself and pur-sue her many interests no matter whatothers may say. Not only is she a mem-ber of the school's orchestra and swimteams, but also one of the only femaleson the wrestling team.
"People always ask me if it's awk-ward to be on the wrestling team andI tell them no, it's not," she said. "I justdo it. I don't even think about it."
Even with her nonchalant, ready-for-anything approach to life, Wright
has taken her share of ridicule for heroft-outside-the-box choices, which is
why her participation in the contestheld in recognition of National Anti-Bullying Week held personal meaning.
"In elementary school and into
sixth grade, I was bullied for being atomboy because I didn't like to dressall girly and pretty," she said. But inseventh grade I stood up for myselfand it stopped."
Wright's unwavering moral codeleads her to protect others aswelleven classmates she doesn'tknow.
"Whenever I see someone gettingbullied in the hallway, whether or not Iknow the person, I put a stop to it," shesaid. "I just go up to (the individualdoing the bullying) and say, 'Hey,knock it off!'"
Her winning T-shirt designthephrase "Think Bright Stop Bullying"paired with a lightbulbcame to theteen, who has a passion for writing, quite naturally one October day instudy hall.
"I have always loved writing, espe-cially poetry, and I wanted somethingsimple for the design," the teen said."So I looked around the room andstarted putting words together in myhead and then the idea just hit me."
Still, she never thought she wouldwin. The design was then put on T-
shirts that were sold to fellow stu-dentswith great reception for $5.
"I have seen quite a few T-shirts onkids in the hallway," Wright said.
The honor roll studentwho alsoloves science, reading and artsaysshe plans to continue entering thesetypes of creative contests and usingher interests to promote positive mes-sages.

said. "I am really against drugs. Drugs arehorrible and they really mess you up."
It is precisely because there are so manynegative influences and harmful temptationslurking that Wrights mother, AndreaGoodling, keeps her daughter busy with pro-ductive activities.
"My mom purposely fills my time (withextra-curriculars) so that I stay away frombad habits, and I'm glad she does that,"Wright said. "Every night I have some kind ofpractice, and I have meets on Saturdays andchurch and youth group on Sundays. Myonly real free time is after 5:30 p.m. onThursdays and maybe Sunday afternoon ifmy chores are done.
The limited idle time is largely becausethe responsible and conscientious teen does-n't do anything halfway. She is the school'sSecond Chair viola player (just a couple ofsongs behind First Chair, she noted), a Level
6 swimmer who skipped four levels right off
the bat ("My dad was a swimmer so I guessit's in the genes," she said), an enthusiasticwrestler who already recruited another girlfor the team and an involved member ofUnited Methodist First Church in Hartford.
Above all, Wright is the kind of individualwho has no problem navigating her ownpath through life.
"We're very proud of her," her mother
said during a phone conversation with theExpress News. "She's involved in a lot ofthings, she is very outgoing and she speaksher mind."
While many young people have loftygoals, few have a detailed blueprint laid outlike this teenager does.
"I have lots of plans," Wright said, notingthat she will seek to start training for the
National Guard while still in high school sothat the reserve military force will pay hercollege tuition, and then after college servethe Guard for four years, "and then start mylife."
"I think that will really build character,"she said.
Until then, Wright will continue on theroute that has led her be the sound, well-
adjusted girl she is today."I will just keep going and doing what I'm
doing," she said. "If it keeps working, great, and if not, Ill just make some changes."

Home sales in the Metropolitan Milwaukeemarket were up 16.4% in September, comparedto a year earlier according to analysis by theGreater Milwaukee Association of REALTORS.Through the 3rd quarter t he market had a 12.7%increase in sales versus 2012.
SalesThere were a total of 1,484 homes sold in
September, compared to 1,275 in September of2012. For the first 9-months of the year, therewere 13,917 sales vs. 12,349 during the samespan in 2012.
Year-End OutlookWhile the fall/winter market usually sees a
slowdown in activity, we expect 2013 to end ona positive note. With nearly 14,000 sales com-pleted, and a historic average of 3,000 to 4,000sales in the 4th quarter, we are comfortable pro-jecting that 2013 will end with approximately17,000 sales. That would put t he year on t he levelof the early 2000s, when we saw total annualsales in the high teens.
ListingsIn the first quarter of 2013 the market saw
double-digit decreases in listings, which precipi-
tated a reduction in days-on-market (DOM).[DOM is the length of time between the signing ofa listing contract and an accepted offer on aproperty.] Through the summer sellers startedfeeling better about the prices their homes wouldfetch on the market and began listing in greaterquantities. Listings for the 3rd quarter finished13.6% ahead of 2012. For the year, theMetropolitan market area is 2.1% ahead of2012.
InventoryWith total market area listings at the end of
September at 11,253, the inventory level was 7.7-months, down from Augusts 7.9 level. A year
ago, the inventory level was at 12.08-months. Ifthe 1,246 listings with an active offer are sub-tracted, the supply of homes available for pur-chase drops to 5.6-months.
Washington County: Eight of the countys15 communities increased their average saleprice through the 3rd quarter. The City of WestBend had a 22.9% increase in unit sales (goingfrom 341 to 419) a 3.6% increase in averagesale price ($166,230 to $172,254) and a20.8% decrease in DOM (120 to 95).
Ozaukee County: In Ozaukee County, 6 of10 communities saw prices increase and thecounty overall had an 8.2% increase in prices. However, the variation within the county was
wide with the Village of Bayside decreasing23.7% and the Village of Newberg increasing105.7% (both Bayside and Newberg arebetween 2 counties).
The Greater Milwaukee Association of REAL-TORS (GMAR) is a 4,000-member strong pro-fessional organization dedicated to providinginformation, services and products to help REAL-TORS help their clients buy and sell real estate.Data for this report was collected by Metro MLS,Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of the GMAR.The GMAR is affiliated with the Wisconsin REAL-TORS Association and the National Associationof REALTORS.

By Sam EricksonVeterans Day has taken on a new meaning for many
Americans since September 11 and the beginning of theconflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Only a few years ago, many Americans did not know an individual who had been
in active combat duty in the last 20 years. After theVietnam War, the military became much less valued andmuch less popular in the mainstream culture, but, today, allveterans are honored for their service on Veterans Day.
The first Armistice Day celebration took place in 1919and marked the first anniversary of the Armistice. Thirtystates made it a legal holiday and President WoodrowWilson led the festivities. Armistice Day was made a feder-al holiday in 1938, making it one of the most recent holi-days in America. The name was officially changed toVeterans Day with legislation proposed in 1953.
Unlike religious and secular holidays like Christmas andThanksgiving, there are very few official celebrations of
Veterans Day in America, although this too is rapidlychanging as more veterans return from Iraq andAfghanistan. If you are interested in establishing your owntraditions, there are many things you can do. Most citieswill have some memorial for soldiers lost in war, and laying
flowers or remembering soldiers that you have known is agood option. While there are active service men andwomen in the field, you might consider sending a carepackage or just a t hank-you card to a soldier. You can evendiscuss the history of the holiday and American militaryinvolvement with your children.
Most holidays in the United States have been moved toMondays to create a long weekend. The same was donefor Veterans Day, but veterans groups protested and it wasmoved back to the traditional date of November 11. Mostgroups thought it would raise the profile of the holiday, butit has, in fact, had the opposite effect. While more peopleare observing the holiday in recent years, most businesses
do not close for the day. Only government offices andbanks are closed. Official ceremonies center on the Tombof the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery inWashington, D.C. A color guard from all branches of themilitary patrols the site through the night, a presidential
wreath is laid and Taps is played over the grave.Veterans Day is both a state and a federal holiday in allstates. It coincides with international celebrations ofArmistice Day and Remembrance Day in other parts of theworld. The holiday is observed on November 11 becausemajor hostilities in World War I were ended formally at 11a.m. on the 11th day of November, the 11th month, in 1918when Germany signed the Armistice at the VersaillesPalace in Paris. Veterans Day has a different focus thanMemorial Day, as Veterans Day is intended to honor andthank the living veterans in the United States for their serv-ice and to acknowledge their contributions to Americansociety.

Not everyone has to worry about pipesfreezing in the winter, but much of Americadoes. If the temperature in your area routinelydrops to 20 degrees or below, it will be worthyour time and energy to prepare and maintain
your home to prevent your pipes from bursting.Pipes burst when an ice blockage forms and thepressure builds up behind it. While you won'thave ice shooting into your home, you'll have
all of the water that has built up behind it inthe basement, in the crawlspace or through thewalls of your house.
Proper insulation is the first step to preven-tative maintenance. The unheated areas of yourhouse are the most important to insulate. Attics, basements and crawlspaces are the general
culprits. Polyethylene or fiberglass tubes areavailable to keep the cold out of pipes. You'llwant to measure the diameter of the pipes andpurchase the correct size. This will ensure you
have to make only one trip to your home supplystore.
Pipe insulation is carried in most big boxstores and in all hardware and home supplystores. It can be cheaper in the spring months prices tend to go up as the temperatures dropand demand goes up. You will want to be par-
ticularly aware of any pipes that have beenstressed by previous freezing or have recentlybeen installed.
If you experience significant periods ofsevere winter weather, you might considerwrapping pipes in heat tape before insulatingthem. The instructions for installation are veryspecific, and it is essential to follow them. If youdon't, the heat tape can lead to fires. Heat tapealso has to be checked regularly to ensure it isstill functioning effectively.
Once you've taken all of the prerequisitesteps, you'll still have some maintenance to doto ensure you don't wake up in a puddle. Whenthe temperature is expected to drop, turn onyour faucets, particularly those that flow alongoutside walls and are the most exposed to thecold. This will reduce the pressure and can pre-vent an explosion in the pipes, even if an icedam does form. Opening cabinets that containpipes will let the warm air from the rest of yourhouse flow onto the pipes, keeping themwarmer.
You can take one more step and check thebasement and garage for any leaks. Look par-ticularly for places where cold air could bedirectly applied to pipes from cracked win-dows, gaps or areas where the insulation hasworn away. Applying your general insulation
strategies will save money on your energy bill, and it can also keep your pipes warmer anddelay or prevent a freeze.
Preventative maintenance is never an attrac-tive fix. It's neither a new skylight nor a freshcoat of paint, and it won't be instantly notice-able. Pipe insulation and maintenance, howev-er, will add to the value of your home in thelong run by preventing costly damage and anasty surprise in the middle of the night.

Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter
Dear Dr.s Winter: Can you make mydentures non-removable?
Details: I had my few remaining teeth removedand torus surgery done in Dec of 2008 and full
dentures (upper and lower) put in immediately. It went well. My dentist explained that after ayear of complete healing I would probablyrequire a re-lining at a cost of $1000. I wouldlike to explore my other options. I am tired ofusing adhesives 2-3 times a day. I am a 58 yr oldhealthy active woman. thanks
Answer: Dear Danielle, you sound like anexcellent candidate for "fixed teeth." When adenture needs relining it is because the gumtissues have healed and shrunken after theinitial extractions. The rubbing of the dentureagainst this tissue leads to bone loss as well.People lose bone at an alarming rate and overthe first 5 years there can be a loss of 60% of the
original bone height and or width. If you comein for a comprehensive examination and x-rayvisit we can discuss your options, the associatedcosts and the time involved to help you reachyour goals.
Options for fixed dentistry on implants will beeither a "hybrid" prosthesis-a fixed denture thatis cemented or screwed into the implants or afixed porcelain bridge on implants. In order foryou to get these prostheses you would need 6-9implants in the upper arch and 5-9 implants inthe lower jaw. The number of implants dependson the quality, quantity and location of yourexisting bone as well as your budget.
I often explain to patients that if you go with aprosthesis where only 4 implants are placed and1 fails, you have a complete failure of thebridge. So using more supports will improve theengineering of the prosthesis and decrease theforces on each individual implant.
If the implants are found to be too expensive for
the number required, then sometimes fewerimplants can be placed with an interim snap-
on-denture, until more implants can beafforded. Then the prosthesis can be changedfrom a removable to a fixed bridge. So theconcept of "Upgradeable Dentistry" allows ourpatients to sequentially upgrade their dentaloptions based upon their financial, emotionaland personal readiness. You can read Dr.Richard Winter's articles on Upgradeable Den-tistry at WWW.WINTERDENTAL.COMunder publications to see more examples ofthese implant options as well as videos.
Please call our office at 414-464-9021 toschedule your visit. I look forward tomeeting you.
Yours for great dental health,Dr. Richard Winter MAGD, DICOIMaster Academy of General DentistryDiplomate International Congress
