A few thoughts on agingHere are a few thoughts
about aging and life in gen-eral that is circulating onCyberspace. I hope youenjoy.
When I was a child Ithought “nap time” was apunishment. Now, as agrown up, it just feels like asmall vacation!
The biggest lie I tellmyself is... “I don’t need towrite that down, I'll remem-ber it.”
I don’t have gray hair. Ihave “wisdom highlights”.I'm just very wise.
I’m going to retire andlive off of my savings. Notsure what I’ll do that sec-ond week.
At my age “gettinglucky” means walking intoa room and rememberingwhat I came in there for.
Old age is coming at areally bad time!
If God wanted me totouch my toes, he would’veput them on my knees.
The kids text me “plz”which is shorter thanplease. I text back “no”which is shorter than“yes”.
You know that tingly lit-tle feeling you get whenyou really like someone? That’s common sense leav-ing your body.
I don't like making plansfor the day because thenthe word “premeditated”gets thrown around in thecourtroom.
Last year I joined a sup-port group for procrastina-
tors. We haven’t met yet...
Lord grant me thestrength to accept thethings I cannot change, thecourage to change thethings I can and the friendsto post my bail when Ifinally snap!
My people skills are justfine. It’s my tolerance toidiots that needs work.
This is my favorite: Why do I have to press
one for English when you’rejust gonna transfer me tosomeone I can’t under-stand anyway?
Of course I talk tomyself, sometimes I needexpert advice.
Oops! Did I roll my eyesout loud?
Chocolate comes fromcocoa which is a tree... thatmakes it a plant whichmeans... chocolate isSalad!

Caring for Ray Hayes, right here at home.
The hands that heal, the ties that bind.e wears the ring. And he’s determined to live to see
his grandson wear it too. Ray Hayes, The Citadel class of 1952, and Russell Watkins, The Citadel class of 2017, share the double bonds
the 84-year-old Hayes suffered an intestinal obstruction, it looked like he may not get to see his grandson graduate from The Citadel 65 years after he did. With his life hanging in the balance, Hayes was rushed to the Emergency Department at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. His age and other medical complications notwithstanding, the medical team knew his only chance was surgery to relieve the obstruction. Dr. Tom Mincheff, general surgeon, expertly performed the procedure. Had he not acted quickly and decisively, Ray Hayes would not be with us today. But happily he is, and he remains committed to participating in the
presentation of Russell’s diploma from The Citadel. Pre and post-operative care from Dr. Rudolph Jokl and Dr. Robert Elder, along with the ongoing dedication of Dr. Mincheff, kept the dream alive. As Rebecca Watkins, the daughter of Ray and mother of Russell, put it: “The personal care and love shown to us was what made the difference. We are all blessed to have the skill and caring of the healthcare team at Carolina Pines.” The medical hands that heal, the community ties that bind. That’s Carolina Pines.

The thoughts of a guilty manAs a children growing up,
it never really bothered upwhen we told lies to keepfrom getting punished or get-ting a much deserved spank-ing. My daddy was a verykind and gentle man, butwhen his kids crossed theline, he became our worstnightmare. He made believ-ers out of us both in God andin him as our father who wasresponsible for our souls. One thing our dad did not tol-erate and that was lying. Itwas better to tell the truth, than to lie and he find outlater. Because of this train-ing, and as we got older, wefound it hard do things thatwere wrong without feelingguilty about doing it.
Guilty can be both a goodthing and a bad thing. Guiltcan make a personstraighten up and fly right orlive in a downward spiral.Sometimes guilt won’t allowyou to ask for forgiveness orseek the mercy of God.That’s when people taketheir own judgment into their
own hands. Do you recallJudas who considered him-self a friend of Jesus andone of the disciples who car-ried the guilt of framingJesus and exposing Him tohis accusers? His guilt wasso heavy that he took hisown life and hung himself. AllJudas had to do was go tohis Father and ask for his for-giveness.
Then there is the goodkind of guilt that reminds us
that we have to repent andget in good standing with ourLord and Savior. It remindsus that we have stepped outof the will of God and weneed to return and seek theforgiving Father and receivehis loving kindness.
We all are guilty at onetime or another, but accord-ing to the scriptures we were“born in sin”. We were guiltyfrom the beginning and thencame Jesus to the rescue. He bore all our guilt andshame and took it upon Him-self so that we can live aguilt-free life. And when wedo find ourselves in a guiltystate, we can go to ourFather and ask for forgive-ness and deliverance to keepus on a forward path. Satansometimes takes advantageof our guilt and reminds usover and over of our wrongdoing, but we need to remindhim that we are forgiven.
In case he forgot, (Psalm103:11-12) says “For as the

In an order to preventlearning loss over the sum-mer months, PULSE is spon-soring an evening of activitiesfor families at the four Comerschools. The Spring Fling willbe held Wednesday, May 20,from 5:30-7:45 p.m. at theHartsville Middle School, andwill feature fun for the entirefamily. Additionally, parentswill discover numerous waysto emphasize reading, usefree apps to encourage learn-ing and participate in aresource fair. All events aredesigned to help studentscontinue learning throughoutthe summer.
The National SummerLearning Institute supportsthe notion that in order tosucceed in school and life, children and young adultsneed ongoing developmentalexperiences to learn andpractice essential skills. Thisties in with the Comer SchoolDevelopment (SDP) model,
in place at four Hartsville Ele-mentary schools.
Using more than a centuryof collected data, the Institutereports that most studentslose the equivalent of twomonths of grade equivalencyin mathematics, and low-income students tend toexperience an equal loss inreading achievement. TheInstitute also documentslower scores on standardizedtests following summer vaca-tion than at the beginning ofsummer.
Justin Dunham, DarlingtonCounty School DistrictComer facilitator, and coordi-nator of the Spring Fling said,“The Comer schools arealways looking for ways toinvolve families. We hope bythe time they leave, our par-ents and caregivers will beequipped with all the neces-sary resources to combatsummer learning losses.”
In addition to the learning
opportunities, the SpringFling will feature musical per-formances, learning sessions, games for children andrefreshments. Prizes will alsobe given away, including afamily pass to the PiratesvilleSplash Pad.
Dunham said he hopesthe event will help parentsand students continue devel-oping nurturing relationshipswith other community groupsin Hartsville.
The Spring Fling is forfamilies and caregivers of stu-dents attending WashingtonStreet Elementary, SouthsideEarly Childhood Center,Thornwell School for the Artsand West Hartsville Elemen-tary.

Warm weather invites alltypes of relaxing thoughtsand behaviors. Peopleembrace various ways ofrelaxing in the summer, fromchoosing lightweight clothesto spending more time onrecreational pursuits tostreamlining certain beautypractices.
Summer beauty routinesmay require minor changesto accommodate some ofthe environmental effects ofhot weather and humidity.Consider the following tips tolook and feel your best whenthe mercury rises.
• Try tinted moisturizer. Acarefree, breezy look oftenmeans not being weigheddown by a lot of makeup. Itmay be possible to skip foun-
dation and rely only on con-cealer to cover up smallblemishes or alleviate darkcircles under the eyes.Another option to try is tintedmoisturizer, which can keepskin supple and offer a lightamount of color to even outpigment. BB creams also canprovide you with an all-in-onebeauty product, as suchcreams frequently containsunscreen, color tinting andanti-aging ingredients.
• Get a healthier glow. Many people equate health
and vitality to tan skin. How-ever, spending time outdoorsin the sun or using indoortanning beds that exposeyou to UV rays can increaseyour risk of skin cancer, including dangerousmelanoma. The AmericanCancer Society saysmelanoma will account formore than 73,000 cases ofinvasive skin cancer in 2015.Melanoma accounts formore than 9,900 of theroughly 13,000 skin cancerdeaths each year. Sunlesstanners and bronzers cangive skin that sun-kissedlook without the downside ofexposure to UV rays. Thosewho must go out in the sunshould wear a wide-brimmedhat and limit their exposure
between the hours of 10a.m. and 4 p.m., when thesun’s rays are at theirstrongest.
• Don’t fight the ele-ments. Many people go togreat lengths to change whatnature gave them. For exam-ple, those with curly hair willspend hours with straighten-ing irons or special serums.Try to embrace the elementsand your natural hair texturethis summer. Use a productto keep frizz away and lethair air dry. Wavy, beach-inspired hair screams sum-mer and can give you thatcarefree look.
• Protect hair and skin.Relaxing in the summertimesun does not mean youshould forgo protection.
Remember to always applysunblock to all parts of yourbody. Some hair productscontain sunblock to protectthe scalp, and men whoshave their heads or are nat-urally balding should be dili-gent about applying sunblockto the top of their heads.Don’t forget to apply sun-block to the tops of yourfeet and your ears.
• Rinse hair after swim-ming. Chlorinated water andeven saltwater can affect thecolor and texture of your hair.
Those who color their hairmay find frequent laps in thepool can change the hue oftheir hair or prevent colorfrom lasting as long as itonce did. Wet hair beforegoing in the pool, and rinseout salt and chemicals after-ward. A small application ofleave-in conditioner beforeentering the water can helpseal the hair cuticle and keepchemicals from beingabsorbed. TF156256

Main Street Hartsville receives accreditation Downtown development
organization Main StreetHartsville has again been des-ignated as an accreditedNational Main Street Programfor meeting the commercialdistrict revitalization perform-ance standards set by theNational Main Street Center®,a subsidiary of the NationalTrust for Historic Preservation.Every year, the National MainStreet Center and its partnersannounce the list of accreditedMain Street® programs inrecognition of their commit-ment to historic preservationand community revitalizationthrough the Main Street FourPoint Approach®.
The accreditation cameafter a year in which MainStreet Hartsville made greatstrides in the enhancement ofthe downtown business dis-trict. Projects included theongoing development of whatis now the Hartsville FarmersMarket on East CarolinaAvenue, Concerts on CollegeAvenue and the DowntownBlock Party, as well as theDowntown Holiday Open
House offering extendedshopping hours and attrac-tions to kick off the Christmasshopping season. TheHartsville for the Holidays pop-up shop also highlighted localmerchants and artisans duringthe Christmas season, andafterward MeMe’s Scrap-booking moved into the emptystorefront which the tempo-rary shop had used.
In 2014, Main StreetHartsville also took on suchprojects as the Start-UpHartsville competition, con-ducted in partnership with theDuke Energy Center for Inno-vation, in which business start-ups could compete for twoawards of $12,000 in incen-tives to move into downtown.Main Street Hartsville alsopartnered with the S.C. Gov-ernor’s School for Scienceand Mathematics for #connec-thartsville, in which Governor’sSchool students assisteddowntown business ownerswith developing social mediaand web presence.
“Downtown Hartsville isgetting better every day, with
22 businesses either openingor announcing that they willopen in the last 18 months,”Main Street Hartsville Execu-tive Director Suzy Moyd said.“Main Street Hartsville isabsolutely thrilled to be a partof the effort to make our his-toric downtown an attractiveplace to work and live. TheSign and Paint Grant programhas so far helped 11 busi-nesses improve their curbappeal, with more on theway.”
Main Street Hartsville’sperformance is annually evalu-ated by Main Street SouthCarolina, which works in part-nership with the National MainStreet Center to identify thelocal programs that meet tenperformance standards. Thesestandards set the benchmarksfor measuring an individualMain Street program’s appli-cation of the Main Street FourPoint Approach® to commer-cial district revitalization. Eval-uation criteria determines thecommunities that are buildingcomprehensive and sustain-able revitalization efforts.
