A Message from the PrincipalNovember, 2016

Dear Olathe South Falcon Family,

As the number of daylight hours and pages left on the calendar dwindle, we reflect, reminisce, and then direct our focus and energies forward toward the stretch of time to come. In the halls of Olathe South, we consider the activities and relationships that have defined the 2016-17 school year thus far. We celebrate achievement and participation in the classroom, on the stage, and on the various playing surfaces. We approach the final days of our Fall season, concerts, and other special performances

and celebrate knowing of the many quality experiences that have provided lasting memories for all involved. Additionally, we enter a new season where we are reminded to consider those who provide us cause to be thankful. We reflect upon the students and those who have the special privilege to touch their lives each day. We consider their peer group and the countless healthy interactions we have an opportunity to witness every single day. We consider their teachers, coaches, sponsors, mentors and youth group leaders who privately make sacrifices so the experiences and relationships shared are enriched. We consider the parents, siblings, and other family members who, by the very nature of the relationship, have tremendous influence on those we share for only this short period of four years. We are truly thankful for all those who impact our students daily. As for preparing for this new season, we seek to maximize the opportunities gained in the time that separates today from the beginning of a new calendar year. In addition to the holiday celebrations, the new season delivers: another round of tryouts, an urge for a renewed and strong academic push, a reminder that “early is on time; on time is late,” and yes, we prepare ourselves for those weather-related challenges. While our “weather-related challenges” may refer to striving to avoid illness, ensuring safe travels, or the occasional cancellation/postponement, we encourage everyone to take the additional steps which help to bring about good health and safe journeys. We also wish to express an early thank you for the flexibility and understanding with scheduling adjustments sometimes associated with the upcoming season. As stated earlier, we approach a period where we often consider all that provides us reason to be thankful. In the commotion of the moment, our lives may become somewhat blurry and we lose sight of what produces joy. As is the case each year, the next few months are jam-packed with activities: special music programs, drama productions, athletic events and other such activity fills our calendar. It could be argued that the immediacy of all the things one “has to get done” absorbs our attention and energy, and if we are not cautious, we can easily be drawn into not recognizing the enjoyment of the journey while living it. We become distracted by the fast-paced lives we lead and fail to truly experience the individual moments and journey along the way. Far too often, we find ourselves looking back on these experiences, and we later recognize our failure to enjoy the real meaning of these experiences and of those sharing it with us. While we prepare ourselves mentally for the days ahead, do contemplate pushing the “pause” button. It’s obvious that if not careful, many of life’s precious moments and lasting memories can pass unnoticed while we are preoccupied with the maddening pace of each day. As we enter the season, we invite everyone within the community and Falcon Family to take a breath, step away from the race every now and then and notice the color of the leaves, those that bring you happiness, and all that makes you thankful. We continue to be so grateful for the 2016-17 school year we’ve experienced thus far! There is much appreciation for all that you, as part of our Falcon Family, have done to contribute to Olathe South and your individual student. We continue to be SOUTHSIDE STRONG!

ALAS Students Attend Noche de Gala

Three ALAS members, sophomore Mark Gracidas, and juniors Esmeralda Reyes and Brenda Mejia, along with sponsor Angel Cornejo, attended the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Noche de Gala on Oct. 6. The group of students had the opportunity to connect with Kansas City leaders and Latinos of Tomorrow. Students commented they didn’t realize how much people are willing to help each other and the opportunities available for them, especially for first generation Hispanics. It was a tremendous experience for ALAS students.

The winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie was the 2002 season’s most awarded new show on Broadway! According to the publisher, the show, based on the 1967 Academy Award-winning film Thoroughly Modern Millie, takes you back to the height of the Jazz Age in New York City, when “moderns,” including a flapper named Millie Dillmount, were bobbing their hair, raising their hemlines, entering the workforce, and rewriting the rules of love. This high-spirited musical romp is a delightful valentine to the long-standing spirit of New York City and the people who seek to discover themselves there. Set in New York City in 1922, the musical tells the story of young Millie, from Kansas, who comes to New York in search of a new life for herself. Her grand plan is to find a job as a secretary for a wealthy man and then marry him. However, her plan goes completely awry. The cast is filled with amazing singers, fabulous dancers, and great actors. You shouldn’t miss this musical. It promises to be an excellent show. Tickets can be purchased on the Olathe South Theatre website or at the door the night of the show. “This is going to be one of the better musicals that we have ever produced,” said theatre director David Hastings.
