Habitat

Ecologists undertake day and night surveys to identify threatened plant and animal species. Experts determine what buffers or space needs to be left around these animals to ensure their habitat is retained and they continue to live in the forest.

Roads

Roads are maintained during harvesting to reduce the risk of soil getting into waterways. Roads are used to get timber out of the forest and to the mill but once harvesting is finished they are used for recreation like four-wheel-driving.

Regeneration

On average 2% of State forests in NSW are harvested for timber each year. Many State forests have been harvested several times over the last 100 years – regenerating to provide a supply of timber and today and into the future.

2011 in the International Year of Forests. Celebrate NSW State forests and all they offer.
