Has you business got the edge?

How do we produce more, for less whilst protecting the earths depleting natural resources!

How do we keep above the competition, providing what the market needs, when it needs, to the standard and price the market is willing to purchase for!

How do we meet and indeed exceed customer expectations!

How do we capture in advance market expectations!

How do we ensure that our business provides, maintains and exceeds customer requirements at all times!

How we ensure our business has got the edge!

What are the barriers that reduce business profitability!

Communication between top management and the workforce – or lack of it! In larger companies silos developing – common where mergers have taken place Duplication of documents Poor training Poor listening skills Not embracing the digital technology available ie: “Real-time” reporting, video conferencing etc Over producing rather than embrace “just in time” – large warehouses cost money “None value added” services which the customer does not require nor is willing to pay for. Lack of streamlining production flow rather than using value stream mapping. No flexibility in workforce skills ie: cross training No flexibility in mobile workforce rather than invest in home working, hot desking etc Lack of vision ie: developing the next generation of skilled employees

There are many more – these are a few examples?

Practical steps to improve profitability!

Train staff to work safely, efficiently in their tasks, consider cross training to provide flexibility. Ensure regular supervision. Hot desking - consider if office or field roles can be home based - reduces the need for large offices and helps reduce carbon footprint. Digital technology - consider standardising reports ie: FRA’s (PAS79) – could this be completed on an ipad and populated “real time” reporting. If you have multi-sites consider video conferencing to reduce travel time and cost. On production lines, standardise processes, mistake proof processes to ensure safety and lack of error. Only produce what the customer requires – non added value costs money. Consider “just in time” manufacturing – this reduces stock levels and the need for large warehouses to store which cost money to run and maintain. Pro-actively look for ways to improve processes, reduce duplication – ask workers for suggestions, walk the flow, use spaghetti charts, value stream mapping, gaunt charts etc Monitor accident and near miss reporting, identify trends and consider improvements to remove or reduce the likelihood of further occurrences. Fully investigate the facts – accidents cost a significant amount of money and could close a company down with workers depending on a living.

Know your market!

Keep up to date with the market – note what your others are doing better than you – keep an eye on new technology. Visit trade fairs, professional conferences and network Remember the voice of the customer Keep your professional practice up to date and ensure your team do. Celebrate your success and make sure your customers know. Recommendations from customers go a long way as does repeat business. Quality matters – know what the customer wants , when they want. Benchmark to industry best practice Have a complaints policy, make sure your customers are aware of it and above all LISTEN and ACT swiftly. Be pro-active rather than re-active. Meet customer expectations and look to exceed them! If you stand still your competition will take your business away! You have one mouth, two eye – apportion your time accordingly! Some products have a shelf life – always be looking for the next opportunity.
