Has Your Depression Treatment

Failed?

Many times, it has been observed that first depression treatments do not yield

successful results as they should. And there are several reasons that contribute

to this problem. They include but are not limited to medications hindering the

functioning of antidepressants and adherence of the patient to the process of

treatment. Some patients of depression can forget or omit to take medications

especially in more severe and chronic cases. They may skip sessions with the

therapist. A wrong diagnosis is also common especially when signs of

depression can be similar to the signs of many other problems. For E.g.

fatigue and sadness are classic signs of depression but can also hold good for

hypothyroidism.

When your first depression treatment fails to deliver successful results, it can

be extremely frustrating and difficult to

cope with. However, it is also important to

understand depression treatments are not

categorized under “one size fits all” kind of

methodology. Hence, specific steps are

necessary to ensure the treatment process

turns favorable for you and your specific problem.

Engage actively

You know yourself better than anyone else does. So, if you have a concern or

disagreement on something another has to say or do, speak up and voice your

thoughts. If certain medications are demonstrating poor side effects, it is

important you speak to your therapist about

it instead of discontinuing them without

information. Such steps can create worse

repercussions and aggravate your condition.

Therefore, talking and informing your

therapist is as important as seeking

professional treatment services.

Create and work towards your treatment objectives

Every treatment has one or more objective to reach to. Determining your

objective(s) along with family and therapist and creating a schedule to put it

into is important to determine if you are traversing through the right

milestones towards success.

Give your treatment sometime to work

There is no point in rushing through the treatment process to see quick results.

Changes cannot happen overnight. Every problem is varied as much as every

personality is and hence give the process adequate time to respond.

Six to eight weeks is usually the time period

required for efficient therapies like Cognitive

Behavioral Therapy to react. This therapy works

by replacing deeply set negative thoughts and

beliefs with positive ones to prevent

recurrences. And such an exercise takes some

number of sessions to begin to show positive

changes.

Review the process

Depression can be extremely difficult to

handle. It can exhaust you completely

and deplete an individual of his or her

energies and happiness. Hence, it is

important to invest adequate time and

make a judicious decision on depression treatments. This kind of review is not

just required prior to commencing the program but also during and after the

treatment approach. Reflect on the process and obtain better and longer

lasting results.
