HC Media

Broncos  gain  recruiting  tools  through  social  media

8 The  Collegian February  16,  2012  SPORTS

talk  about  certain  steps  to  keep  it  private.”Major  NCAA  Division

I   prospect   Yuri   Wright  was   one   of   the   most  notable   national   cases   of  Twitter   controversy,   after  being   expelled   from   his  high   school   for   obscene  and  explicit  tweets.  While   HC   has   not

experienced   such   an  extreme  case,  coaches  are  still   trying   to   establish   a

social  media.  “It’s   a   touchy   deal,”

Boeve   said.   “It’s   a   scary  thing   because   as   a   coach  you   always   have   players  that   don’t   agree   with  you…We’ve   had   a   unity  council   for   the   last   year  and   a   half,   and   one   of  the   things   I   have   asked  them   to   do   is   consider  developing   a   social  media  policy.”

Social   media   outlets  like   Facebook,   Twitter  and   YouTube   are  drastically   changing   the  world  of  athletics  and  HC  has   been   forced   to   adapt  to  the  new  “sharing”  age.Social   media   has

become  so  integrated  into  industry   that   previous  barriers  of  communication  between  players,  coaches,  spectators   and   media  members   are   beginning  to    disappear.  Fast-paced,   one   click

“sharing”   and   “searches”  open  up  new  promotional  opportunities   for   both  programs  and  recruits.Chris   Kranjc,   HC

men’s  soccer  head  coach,  has   used   Facebook   and  Twitter   to   familiarize  recruits  and  families  with  the  HC  brand.“Dealing   with   small

schools,   we   do   look   to  how   we   can   use   that   to  our   advantage,   and   a   lot  of   recruits   look   at   our  Twitter   and   Facebook  pages,”   Kranjc   said.

“It’s   a   way   for   kids   to  stay   in   touch   and   see  what  a  coach   is   thinking,  and   they   can   feel   more  personally   connected   to  the  program.”Kranjc   operates   both

the  Facebook  and  Twitter  pages   for   the   HC   men’s  soccer   team.   HC   soccer  informed   a   large   group  of   followers   that   senior

Bronco   to   be   drafted   by  an   MLS   team   through  these  two  sites. On   the   other   side

of   recruiting,   social  networking   sites  such   as   YouTube   and  Hudl   allow   players   to  market   themselves   to  more  colleges.“I’m  getting  more  and

more  videos   on  YouTube  because  it’s  easier  to  do  it  that  way  than  to  send  me  a  DVD,”  said  Jim  Boeve,  head   baseball   coach.  “The   recruits   are   using  technology   more   from  that  standpoint.”“The  assistant  coaches

watch   a   lot   on   YouTube  nowadays   because  [parents]   can   do   that  and   it   doesn’t   cost   them  anything,  unlike  what  the

recruiting   services   do,”  said   Tony   Harper,   head  football  coach. The   Bronco   football

program   in   particular  has   seen   more   athletes  start   to   market  themselves   through  social   media   services,  like   paid   recruiting  service  websites.  This   year   the  Broncos

signed   an   unusually   high

22  recruits  on  signing  day,  more   than   double   what  the   team   has   signed   in  previous  seasons.Harper   attributes

the   increase   of   early  commitments   to   the  program’s   increased  usage   of   recruiting   sites  such  as  Collegiate  Sports  Data   and   NCSA  Athletic  Recruiting.“We’ve   signed   young

men   from   Oklahoma  and   Texas   and   the   only  way   we   found   them  was  because   of   recruiting  services,”  Harper  said.  Depending   on   how

much   the   recruit   pays,

may   include   highlights,  academic  awards  and  even  family   athletic   history.  Through   this   new   tool,  coaches   have   the   ability  to   single   out   exactly   the  type   of   prospects   they’re

looking  for.“Realistically,   we   say

that   they   have   to   have  a   20   on   their   ACT   right  off   the   top,  and  at   least  a  3.0   GPA,”   Harper   said.  “Anyone   above   that,  then   we   start   looking   at  position  needs.”However,   while   there

media   sites,   coaches   are  still   very   conscientious  of   the   dangers   social  media  brings. What   may   seem

like   jovial,   harmless  or   sometimes   even  seemingly  private  can  and  will  be  seen    online.“It’s   just   making   sure

you   have   your   privacy  settings   set   because  what   you   put   on   there  is   public,”   Kranjc   said.  “Everyone   thinks   no   one  is   going   to   see   it   but   in  fact   it   is   public   and   we
