Nashville has had a facelift. This small segment of the nearly 269 miles ofM-66 reveals some of its recently completed streetscape and renovatedstorefronts lining Main Street. A group of business owners, capitalizing
on these improvements, has been meeting for the past several months. Theirenthusiasm and desire to band together has led to the formation of the NashvilleRoute 66 Business District. The logo for the business district capitalizes on thehighway that runs through downtown. So far, 35 businesses are on board withan advertising and marketing campaign to position Nashville as a destinationlocation. With Moo-Ville Creamery dishing up homemade ice cream to thesouth and the scenic Mulberry Fore Golf Course to the north, a section of thePaul Henry Thornapple Trail, three parks and the Thornapple River, businessowners are eager to invite others to check out what they see in Nashville.

volunteer income tax assistance(Vita)Through its partnership with Davenport University, the Barry Community Foundation is in its sixth year of providing free income tax assistance to Barry County residents. This program is operated out of the Barry

Taking advantage of free tax preparation services helps area families receive tax refunds and credits that enable them to stay in their homes, feed their families, keep the

There are currently 300 appointments scheduled now through the end of March! “With the closing of the AARP tax site, we understand that we have a much wider audience to try and serve this year,” says Site Coordinator, Courtney Ziny. fund highlightThe Extreme Community Needs fund was
created by an anonymous donor shortly after
the economic crisis in 2008. The purpose of
the fund was to provide gap-funding to United
Way to use for citizens and families who were
unable to access traditional sources for help.
For example, in 2009 the fund, administered by
the Barry County United Way, matched other
private donations which allowed more Barry
County Senior Citizens access to Project Fresh
coupon books. Project Fresh provides a coupon
book with $20 worth of coupons which can be
used at local farmers markets to purchase fresh
vegetables and fruits through Oct. 31. The fund
continues to support projects and services that
help a wide range of Barry County residents.
The fund distributions are administered by the
Barry County United Way – another example of
ways that Barry County non-profit organizations
work together to support our community.
The Barry Community Foundation (BCF), The Thornapple Area Enrichment Foundation (TAEF) and The Delton Kellogg Education Foundation (DKEF) have opened the online scholarship application process. Students only need to complete one online application to apply for up to ten scholarships offered by all 3 Foundations.
A complete list of the scholarships offered can be found on the Barry Community Foundation’s website. Students are encouraged to visit www.barrycf.org to review the requirements and complete an online application. All applications must be submitted by the deadline of March 15, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. Students will need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to complete the online application. Most area schools will hold informational meetings and workshops regarding FAFSA completion.
