HIGH POINT’S RESOLUTELY MODERN MOOD, merged texture, shimmer and shine to create an ethe-real, yet equally sophisticated look. Sumptuous metal-lic and crystallized accents perfectly balanced spare
forms, while natural offerings and botanical impres-sions emphasized the very organic side of this style.
Finishes help to reflect a feeling of light, airy luxe, with white lacquer emerging as a sizzling hot look. Pale, natural woods continue the theme of subdued elegance, either shown unfinished or with a lightly waxed finish, displacing the highly distressed looks of recent seasons.
Gold finishes stole the show this season, provid-ing the requisite touch of richness
in the form of gold leafing, lacquer and hand-painting. Silver-hued finishes still remain
important, such as steel and gunmetal, especially as
an exquisite foil to all the glittering gold.
Key materi-als include
cowhide, linen, cotton and velvet, often accented with a subtle dusting of gold or platinum shimmer. Stainless steel, Lucite, snakeskin, crystals, light-toned woods, mirror (often antiqued), onyx, marble and lacquer top the list of important looks for the season.
However, the freshest designs pair intriguing combinations of these materials in unexpected ways to layer depth and complexity. We like gold with cowhide, Lucite with wood, stainless with linen and lacquer with crystals; the possibilities are endless. Overall, the designs tend to be sleek and streamlined, the better to allow the decadent mix of materials, tex-ture and bling to shine.
Organic motifs round out the natural aesthetic – watch out for ferns and other botanicals, feathers and a continuing flock of birds. Repeat geometric prints made for a striking statement at market, inspired by traditional Moorish architecture.
At the other end of the spectrum, a bright color story balanced the cool and elegant neutral palette. Just a shade away from neon, this palette injects play-ful optimism into crisp contemporary and enervates exotic, ethnic-inspired looks running classic chinoise-rie to bold South-of-the-Border styles.

LAST MONTH’S HIGH POINT Market was energized by lots of color, a growing number of new retail channels and an overall positive mood. Buyers interviewed by Home Accents Today reflected on some of those new colors, trends and consum-ers, including the growing number of online opportunities.
I’ve had an interior design busi-ness, for about 10 years, and I drive back and forth to High Point (from Charlotte). So far,
this market seems more lively to me. There’s more color, better quality, and it just seems more exciting. I’m look-ing for lighting, paintings, artwork, prints, bedding. I’ve seen some beauti-ful things this spring. I saw this show-room (Codarus) from the escalator landing below Codarus — I haven’t seen them here before. I saw the Bella Notte signage and said, “Ah… I want to go in there.” So I just ordered some of this bedding. They’re a welcome addition.

WE HAVE VERY UNIQUE NEEDS.We work directly with the trade — sourcing for interior designers who are members of our club, Tolie Designer Club, based out of Toronto. We have over 1,000 members all looking for different things at differ-ent times. We carry over a hundred different vendor lines, most of whom are showing here, so we come to High Point with a very tight schedule. We look for what our members are looking for, so it could be anything from traditional to transitional to contemporary. It’s all across the board. We’ve been around for five years. The owner of the company came from a long history at (Cana-dian retailer) DeBoer’s Furniture. One of her biggest challenges was that she could only offer interior design-ers sections of different lines — she
line items, and we’re moving in that direction as more of our customer base want to move that way. It’s the blend that really makes the difference, so we’re looking for pieces we can blend with Old World, for example, then move into the more transitional.

Oklahoma City, Okla. really wanted to open up full lines to the designers, and that’s what we’re able to do. We’re catalog-based, we have a small showroom, and we work online. The designers come to us, give us the measurements, the look, and we’re able to source exactly what they’re looking for. We ship all across Canada. There are three of us buying here today. We’ve been to Las Vegas and the Toronto shows, but High Point is our main market. All of our vendors are featured here. It’s a great place to come see everybody at the same time and to see the new trends. We’ve seen so many colors, tangerine to emerald, and a lot of revitalizing vintage — bring it back, but with a contemporary feel. — Dana Shalit and Stephanie Santon,

WE HAVE A 10,000-SQ.-FT. show-room, been in business 23 years, and interior design is our main focus. We come to High Point twice a year. We don’t do Vegas often, though it is a good market. High Point is more spread out, we can see more product, flow through the rooms easier, and look at concepts over just individual pieces. We’re looking for new, always — and innovative, trendy, front-runner things. This is the first day for us, but the market feels more energized. We’re seeing a lot more transitional , straight-

This year we’re looking for white washes, different kinds of washes, different metals mixed with wood, unusual bases for tables, metal wall décor. The first three showrooms we went in this morning had exactly what we were looking for.
I’ve been coming to High Point for 25 years and I don’t go to any other markets but this one. I can come here and find everything I need. We just walked in here (Ibolili). I like their natural items. There seems to be a lot more color this market. Last market, I went into several showrooms with beautiful things but everything was neutral. Beige, beige, beige. Gray, gray, gray. What’s the point of look-ing? Many of my clients are still into the neutrals, with touches of color. But I told them, “Tangerine is the color, so that’s what you’re going to see in six months.” And I love aqua — to me, it’s a universal color and I have a lot of it in my home.

ALWAYS LOOKING FOR TRENDS, colors, see what’s happening. Two markets ago I was looking at “tan-gerine” and I thought, this is kind of hot, so I asked some of the vendors if there was any of it around, and no one had any. So now I’m seeing it all over the place, and I think it’s a little strong. I think it’s for a little pop and a little excitement on the floors abso-lutely, but I don’t see it going very far in homes. So far I’ve just been walk-ing the market to kind of see what’s going on, what the trends appear to be, taking it from there. Right now, we’re heading to Barclay Butera’s showroom — he seems to have a lot going on this market.

BARCLAY BUTERA HAS partnered with Nourison to create a line of rugs for his life-style collections.

CELEBRITY INTERIOR designer Dann Foley debuted his first licensed brand of furniture at last month’s High Point Market in conjunction with Pasha Home Fashions.
Foley is a noted residential and commercial/hospitality designer. Showtime’s Real L Word recently featured him as a comical, entertain-ing designer.
Pasha also showed a new col-lection from designer Christopher Torres that it plans to expand over coming months.
Pasha recently bought and reno-vated an upholstery plant in central North Carolina, where the pieces will be produced. The plant opened earlier this spring, creating more than 30 jobs in the region.
TOZAI HOME HAS collaborated with textiles company Dransfield & Ross to debut an eclectic line of home accessories.
John Dransfield and Geoffrey Ross created a collection of more than 40 unique items, including furniture, accessories, wall art and objets d’art, inspired by the duo’s shared appreciation for classic design combined with a modern sensibility.
