WALL STREET TRADING ROOM

In fall 2002, Saint Joseph’s University established a customized trading room in Mandeville Hallwhere students obtain first-hand exposure to financial concepts such as portfolio construction, risk management, and financial engineering. This facility — designed for Saint Joseph’s by Trans-Lux Corporation and the first of its kind in the Philadelphia region — is just anotherexample of how real-time experiential learning is incorporated at the Haub School. The room’selectronic ticker displays ongoing, real-time market activity and stock prices, while a tri-colorboard provides students with current financial information and graphics. Computers in thetrading room are equipped with software packages including MetaStock Professional, ResearchInsight, and Crystal Ball, providing students with the most realistic trading experiences possiblebefore they join the high-tech, fast-paced corporate environment. Students use both current andhistorical information in the classroom; the same information is used by portfolio managers intheir day-to-day business. This technology ensures an effortless transition between the academicworld and the professional work place.

PEDRO ARRUPE CENTER FOR BUSINESS ETHICS

The Erivan K. Haub School of Businessestablished the Pedro Arrupe Center forBusiness Ethics as the result of a privatealumni gift in fall 2004. “ I am a physician by training, and I chose to come to Saint Joseph’s largely because I wanted tobroaden my knowledge of business. In addition to the business education that I received, my most rewarding experience at Saint Joseph’s camefrom a lesson learned in class — that there is a conscience to the work that we do. We not only needto believe it, we need to live and lead it. That is one of the challenges we face coming out of this program — to be true leaders of business with an ethical approach to what we do.”

“ Saint Joseph’s University has assembled a world class MBA program in the Jesuit tradition of excellence, which I was fortunate enough to have graduated from at the beginning of my career. There is an entrepreneurial spirit to the curriculum that encourages participation, open thinking, meaningful dialogue and practical problem solving. My fellow students drew from a wide range of experiences, which added an unexpected dimension to my studies. The faculty armed me with the skill sets that I needed to achieve success, and I was taught to think strategically. Beyond that, the program shaped my perspective on both life and business values. I would strongly encourage anyone who is contemplating pursuing an MBA program to put Saint Joseph’s at the top of his or her list.”

I have been successful throughout my career due to my dual skillset of business and technical capabilities. When I decided tofurther my education with a graduate degree, I searched for aprogram that would provide formal education in both arenas.

The MS in BI (DSS) provides such a dual focus. Technical courses are taught with an eye toward howbusiness can utilize the technology, while the business

concentration courses enable students to enhance theirknowledge of a specific business area.

I know that the knowledge that I have gained fromthe program will help me in my quest forcontinued advancement in the future. I would recommend this program to anyone

who is seeking to develop or refine theirskills in the realm of business technology.”

As human resources continues to evolve as a profession, it is critical that HR professionals gain knowledge outside of their functional area that will allow them to partner with senior leadership in a strategic planning role.
