CATHOLIC PARISH OF OUR LADY, STOWMARKET

E-mail: mailto:[email protected]

MASS TIMES: Saturdays (First Mass of Sunday): St Mary’s C of E Church, Woolpit IP30 9QG - 6.00 pm Sundays Our Lady’s, Stricklands Road, Stowmarket IP14 1AW - 8.30 am & 10.15 am Holy Days Our Lady’s, Stricklands Road, Stowmarket - 8.00 am, 10.00 am and 7.30 pm Weekday services in the Parish are advertised outside the church, in the weekly Newsletter and on the Parish Website www.ourladys-stowmarket.co.uk

Dear Friends; Easter and Pentecost is a time of welcome and new beginnings and an especially appropriate time to celebrate Baptism and Confirmation of Baptism. We are most fortunate this year to have Bishop John Waine visiting Steeple View Care Home on 21

st May celebrating confirmation of

baptism for one of the residents. If you know anyone who also would like to confirm their baptism or receive baptism and confirmation, please be in touch with me. And we look forward to welcoming newcomers or those returning to church through this season. Our Lent course LiveLent reminded us to let our light shine and offer new beginnings for ourselves and others, do continue to pray for Chris Hood and his family in their new start at Old Felixstowe parish, along with those he serves in his new parish. We look for new beginnings too in our own ministries, all of us a royal priesthood of all believers and our church continues to look for growth in number in faith in influence and in youth. Here I am reminded of the Psalm, telling of God who satisfies you with good as long as you live so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's

(Psa 103:5 NRS) . Our Church’s welcome to young

families helps us to nurture optimism and hope and encourages a “can do” attitude able to see the positive in change and work for good. The daily prayer of the Christian faith reminds us to look for good in all things, as we pray God’s Kingdom come, yes in our day and at our hand. So it is we take our part with our risen Christ as His light shines in the darkness. A Blessed Eastertide and Pentecost to all. Yours in Christ Brin, Priest-in-Charge, Haughley with Wetherden and Stowupland. [email protected] - 01449 770921

WETHERDEN VILLAGE HALL Following the recent refurbishment programme, the Hall has seen a substantial increase in bookings and continues to provide a wide range of recreational facilities. For further details about these, availability and Terms and Conditions of hire etc. please visit our website at www.wetherdenvillagehall.com Responses to a flyer issued in the Parish News back in December 2016 indicated that there would be support for running a winter film programme. Further research about the feasibility of this was carried out last year and we would now like to run a trial programme towards the end of this year. For this to be successful, we need a dedicated team of enthusiastic volunteers to run the programme on behalf of the VH Management Council. The volunteers would be responsible for selecting the films, hiring and operating the equipment (training will be provided), marketing the programme, organising some refreshments and managing the finances. If you are a film buff and would be interested and are able to help launch this new community facility, then please email [email protected] indicating how you might be able to help. Our young and enthusiastic secretary has had to resign due to educational commitments, and so we are looking for a volunteer to replace her. The Council normally meets three/four times a year, plus an AGM in November. The role requires reasonable IT skills and involves taking and preparing minutes of meetings, circulating agendas and papers and dealing with the very occasional correspondence. If you are interested and would like to join the team which manages this important community asset, then please contact:

Andrew Thrall (Chairman) on: [email protected].

Blinded by Your Grace!

I found it refreshing at this year’s Brit Awards, that the artist who made probably the biggest impact was a 24 year old south London grime rapper called Stormzy – all thanks to the popularity of his first album ‘Gang Signs and Prayer’, which won the best album category. Sadly for many, this is not the kind of music that is heard in our churches, and yet he’s clearly having an influence on our youth culture and wider audiences. This is all the more startling because he sings openly about his faith and the impact that it has had on his life. His supporters, it seems, include Jeremy Corbyn AND the Church of England. A spokesperson for the CofE praised his ‘determination to make his faith central to his art’. And that’s exactly what impressed me when viewing the Brit Awards on television, as, in accepting his award, he first and foremost thanked God for what he had achieved, and continued to return to this theme of gratitude to our Lord at various stages. He summed it up with the words: ‘Every time I give the glory to God, I know it seems like such a strange thing, but if you know God you know that this is all Him’. I wanted to say ‘AMEN’ when I read in the Guardian a further comment from a CofE spokesperson: ‘It turns out the devil doesn’t have all the best tunes’ which I think is a reference to one of Cliff Richards’ songs ‘Why should the devil have all the good music?’ One song of Stormzy’s that particularly appealed to me is ‘Blinded by Your Grace’ – now available as a ‘Part 1’ and ‘Part 2’, and contains a powerful message about the mercy of God’s love. In Part 1 he sings:

‘Through the darkness You came, and I'll be alright with You by my side. The way that I see You, You're all that I'm needing , Your love never let's me down, Your love never leaves me’. And then, in Part 2 he develops this theme: ‘Lord, I've been broken, although I'm not worthy, You fixed me, I'm blinded by Your grace’

During the Brit Awards, Stormzy performed a routine that began with this Gospel-influenced ‘Blinded by Your Grace’ and then progressed through to a ‘free rap’ which contained strong criticism of government, authorities and some of our National Press for their inactivity or prejudices to the disadvantaged – all performed under flowing water. A set engineer who worked into the early hours of the morning to perfect the staging, commented: ‘Stormzy was clear from the outset that the performance would have this specific political purpose. The rap breaks the hymn like a bomb lobbed through a church window and the rain brings unrehearsable realness and urgency: each word and gesture is magnified and radiated through it’ I have to admit I like some of his music – although I cringe at some of the language he uses – but I have to admire someone who publically uses his God-given talent to speak a message both of hope as well as stinging criticism which is influencing a mass audience, and probably reaching those parts that the Church is failing to reach! It is a testimony to the way God raises up people within every generation to speak of our dependency on His love, grace, and forgiveness, so that ‘all may have life in all its fullness’ (John 10: 10) In our Lent Study we have been exploring what it means to be an Easter People, in other words living in a way that confidently reflects the life we have been offered through the life, death and resurrection of our Lord and Saviour. We have discovered that this can lead us to sing out hymns of praise and thanksgiving to the One who saves, to find strength and trust in times of difficulties, to share the Good News with all whom we meet, as well as to challenge the unjust systems of our communities, nation and world. That’s the kind of expression I find in Stormzy’s lyrics – so he certainly gets my support, even if I find him unconventional – but in so many ways, so was Jesus! God Bless. Chris (Rev’d Chris Wood – minister of Stowmarket, villages and Debenham URC’s)

Stowmarket and District Camera Club A new (to us anyway!) judge, Howard King, visited the club on 12 February to judge our ‘OPEN 3’ competition. He gave constructive, useful comments and only gave good marks for good pictures. We would welcome him back again as he enjoyed joining in with our banter! On February we welcomed Mike Lloyd back to judge our ‘WILDLIFE’ competition. He gave a very knowledgeable critique of both the wildlife subject matter and the photography. The winners were:

First was ‘Kittiwake feeding its chick’ by Roy Fidler,

Second was ‘Lackford Robin’ by Keith Hyland

Third was ‘Courting Puffins’ again by Roy Fidler.

Well done to both of you. Next meetings: Monday 12 March: OPEN 4 competition to be judged by Mike Cowling. Monday 26 March: LECTURE 3: ‘High Speed Photography’ to be given by club member Jo Honour. Monday 9 April: Colin Stubly Shield for Portraiture and the Audio Visual salver – both to be judged by John Wrigley. Monday 23 April: AGM/club night. Monday 14 May: LECTURE 4: ‘Landscape’ to be given by Justin Minns. New members are always very welcome at the club. All you need is a camera – any camera and a real interest in using it. Our members use DSLRs, mirrorless, compacts and bridge cameras. Regular meetings are held at Stowmarket Community Centre, Hillside, Stowmarket, IP14 2BD, usually on the 2nd & 4th Monday of the month between September & June. We start arriving at around 7:00pm for a 7:30pm start. We’d love to see you there, so why not join us? For more information see our web site www.stowmarketanddistrictcameraclub.onesuffolk.net

HAUGHLEY PARISH COUNCIL REPORT – MARCH 2018

THANK YOU – To those who turned out to help with the litter pick on 10th March. Although fewer people than hoped for, they managed to clear a substantial amount of litter that even the Wombles would have been proud off. REPORT, REPORT, REPORT - After a publicity campaign both within the Parish Newsletter and our Local Councillors newsletter it seems more reports are being made to Suffolk CC regarding highways ‘issues' by members of the public and as a result more action is being taken by the authority. Please keep your reporting up if you spot a problem. On a sadder note, there have been several recent incidences reported within the parish of anti social behaviour and behaviour showing a criminal intent of which the police are taking action. If at any time you feel concerned about your safety or that if others, or you see or hear suspicious behaviour please call 999. We are pleased that local Safer Neighbourhoods Team officer PC Stephan Henriksen will be attending our May council meeting on the 15th so parishioners will have a chance to meet and speak to the police face to face. INTERRUPTION TO NORMAL SERVICE – AGAIN – Unfortunately our Clerk is unwell again and expected to be off work for at least a month. To fulfil our legal obligations, Cllr G Brown has been voted our temporary Proper Officer and Cllr I White our temporary Responsible Financial Officer. Any contact with the Council can still be made using [email protected] or [email protected] or in person with any councillor. PARISH WISH LIST – The Annual Parish Meeting is to be held on Tuesday 1st May. This is a chance for members of the public to attend a more open meeting and to find out more of what is going on within the Parish. Our focus this year is on development within the Parish and the Neighbourhood Plan. We are particularly keen to use the event to find out what new or improved facilities residents would welcome, as the Parish will receive funds from the Community Infrastructure Levy directly and can bid for additional funds from MSDC to spend on parish facilities and infrastructure. ADOPT A SIGN – You may have seen on our website a new initiative as a response to concerns over the visibility and condition of traffic signs. We are looking for volunteers prepared to look after a sign near to them. If you are interested please contact Cllr Matt Gilson on 07759234883 or [email protected]. DATES FOR THE DIARY Next PC meeting - Tuesday 10th April, Ron Crascall Pavillion, 7.30pm. (N.B. A week earlier than normal). Annual Parish Meeting – Tuesday 1st May, Ron Crascall Pavilion, 7.30pm Allie Warren, On behalf of Haughley Parish Council.

HAUGHLEY PLAYING FIELD AND PAVILION NEWS

The 50/50 club had its first draw on 6

th March. Congratulations to our first 3 winners, Anne

Ardley, Tony Hall , and Patricia Chinery. For more details please see our separate article. Thank you to the Royal British Legion for being our first venue and witnesses. Thanks again to Yvonne Hannan for the hours of administration put in to get this scheme off the ground. It is not too late to join. Please consider going through the www.easyfunding.org which is a fund raising link and setting us up as your chosen charity. We can earn donations as you shop. It is very easy and there are over 3300 retailers including holiday bookings that could really help us boost our fundraising.

https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/kinggeorgefldhaughley/ Spring cleaning has begun, although a little hampered by the weather. The recent village litter pick organised by Rachel Eburne always kick starts this process. Thank you to Rachel and all those parishioners that joined in. During this task it enables me to notice other maintenance that needs attention but if you are concerned we may not have something on our list please feel free to contact me via phone or email listed below. There will be fencing around the rotary swing for a further few weeks while the grass grows through the new matting, unfortunately the recent snow and cold weather slowed this natural process down a bit. I am expecting it to be ready by the start of the Easter holidays. Fundraising - We have agreed to have a stall at a fete and beer festival at Offton Limeburners on 30

th and 31

st March 2018. Please consider coming along to support this event. We also

intend to have a stall at the Village Fete at the Playing Field being organised by the British Legion to commemorate 100 years from the end of WW1. Press Release

The 2018 Woolpit Steam rally will be taking place over the weekend of June 2nd & 3rd, at Warren Farm, Wetherden, IP14 3JX, by kind permission of R & P Baker. This follows on from the hugely successful 30th anniversary show last year which saw £19,800 donated to local charities and community groups.

What makes Woolpit Steam different from many other shows is the organisers’ desire to present to the public historic and rare machinery not normally seen on display. This encourages the true enthusiast to travel from all parts of the country but equally captures the imagination of the casual visitor.

Woolpit Steam is probably best known for its selection of rare and unusual veteran tractors and this year is no exception with around twenty pre-1930 tractors anticipated. This is also to be complemented by a one off gathering of very early commercial vehicles and an expanded display of steam engines.

A further 70 tractors up to 1965 will also be on show, and over 80 stationary engines driving an array of mills, pumps and other machinery together with a wood sawing display will all add to the atmosphere of a bygone age.

Vintage cars, motorcycles, commercial and military vehicles are all represented and a number of models and displays will provide something of interest for everybody.

If you are looking for a gift or that elusive spare part then there are over 50 craft, trade and auto jumble stalls to tempt you. There is also hot and cold food, licensed bar and ice creams.

A traditional fun fair including electric yachts, dodgems and side stalls, together with Punch & Judy and a full ring programme on both days will help keep the family entertained.

Gates are open from 09.00 – 5.00 on both days and admission is Adults £5.00 Saturday / £6.00 Sunday, and children £2.00 on either day. Car parking is free and the show is easily accessible from Junction 47a on the A14 eastbound, or Junction 49 west bound.

WETHERDEN PARISH COUNCIL Notes from the Parish Council Meeting held in March 2018

County Cllr Andrew Stringer's report – Andrew updated us on the complaints regarding Aggmax, and on the County Council's 'on the edge of care' interventions. District Cllr Rachel Eburne’s report – Rachel drew our attention to the Community Infrastructure Levy bids that open on 1 May. It was agreed that a possible joint bid with Elmswell will be pursued to see if there are any projects that could benefit both villages. She also alerted us to the draft recommendations of the ward boundary changes. We had responded previously to say that our links are with Elmswell, Haughley and Woolpit, but the new recommendation is to link Wetherden with Stowupland and Gipping. It was agreed that this is not satisfactory and a response will be drawn up. Co-option to parish council – we are delighted to welcome onto the council Duncan Perry, who has a lot of experience in the world of finance and management. He will be a huge asset to the parish council. There is still another vacancy, so if you are interested, please contact me. It would be particularly good to have any representation from Base Green or Upper Town. Data protection – there are major changes that will be in place from 25 May. These include identifying what data is held, how and for what reason and how long. People now have to opt in rather than consent being assumed on data held on them. A plan is being drawn up for how this will be implemented – and how it could affect you in connection with the parish council. Common/playing field – it was noted that the broken seat on the playground will be removed. Cllr Paul Sutton has agreed to be the village's tree warden. Quotes are being obtained for the re-roofing of the pavilion. This will be followed by repairs to the floor and the decking. The provision of long term, secure storage for use by the football club is also being looked into. Planning applications and decisions – Darshams Farm, planning permission granted. Brooklyn Villas, planning permission refused on grounds of detrimental impact on existing residential amenity. Annual Parish Meeting – this will be held on 16 April and is a chance for the parish council to hear about what is going on in the village and vice versa. Invitation letters will be sent shortly to community groups, but the parish council welcomes you all to this meeting to hear what is going on in Wetherden, and raise any concerns you may have. Urgent matters to be brought to council's attention – concerns were expressed over various Highways matters, such as the drainage of the pond on Wetherden Road, the width of the road past the Old Rectory leading to Base Green, which could do with a warning sign, the damage being done to the verges, and the bridge at Clark's farm. All of these – and any other Highways concerns - can be reported via the Highways reporting tool. Next meeting Annual Parish meeting Monday 16 April; Annual meeting of the parish Monday 21 May 2018, both at 7.30pm at the village hall. Jen Larner, Clerk 01284 705548 [email protected]

WETHERDEN VILLAGE HALL

It’s a little known fact that March is International Mirth Month! It was the idea of Alan Klein, who also goes under the unusual name of Mr Jollytologist! The month encourages us to find humour in stressful situations…… laughter leads to an increase in our positive emotions! Our emotions were very positive on Friday 9th March, as we had just over 9 tables in play at our Monthly Whist Drive! There certainly seemed to be much mirth in the air, and of course the evening would not have been complete without merrily spinning our Lottery Drum, with the following names coming up trumps:-

PLEASE NOTE:- Our next Whist Drive will be held at Wetherden Village Hall on FRIDAY 13th April commencing at 7.30pm - admission price only £1. Why not merrily come along???? Whether you are a

regular player, haven't played for years or have always wanted to play Whist, you will be made very welcome in a warm and friendly atmosphere!

________________________________________________________________ Wow isn’t this year flying by already?! As I’m writing this there’s less than a week to the clocks going forward so summer isn’t too far away – we hope. It seems we don’t have seasons any longer, only weather. Talking about the weather we hope the 9

th June will be warm with no rain. Did you hear that Mr

weather man! The 9th June is when we are holding the village fete from 12pm until 4pm. There

will be various stalls and displays from local groups such as ‘Little stars’ who are a majorette troupe from Stowmarket and Kuk Sol Wan of Stowmarket. There is still lots being added to make it a great day. If you are a village organisation and you haven’t heard from Ash about having a stall, please do get in touch on 07958961724 for more information. Even if you aren’t a village organisation but have a craft stall or something similar we would love to hear from you! April’s meeting, we will be welcoming Clive Mee’s who will be providing a talk on the last flight over Frankfurt. Roy’s monthly thought: ‘Smile, laugh, be happy and people will worry about what you have got that they haven’t.’ Our next meeting will be held on the 1

st May at Wetherden and Haughley scout hut at 7.45pm.

News from your Mid Suffolk District Councillor Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL): When a house is built in our area, the developer has to pay a levy to the District Council of £115 per square metre – so approximately £11,500 for an average sized 100 square metre 3 bedroom home. This money is collected by Mid Suffolk and then re-distributed as follows: 5% kept for admin charges, 15% goes to the Parish (or 25% if they have a Neighbourhood Plan) and the remainder goes towards infrastructure. Via the 15% share of CIL, Wetherden, for example, may receive £3,000 plus from the couple of homes being built there (provided they are not self-built or affordable homes which are exempt). If the 98-home development is built in Haughley (currently with outline planning permission), there will be much more funding available for Haughley Parish. In addition - Mid Suffolk has recently agreed that of the remainder going towards infrastructure, 20% is for strategic, district-wide infrastructure but 80% is for local infrastructure in the area where development is occurring. Parishes, and other relevant organisations, can “bid” for funds from this local infrastructure fund. There will be two bidding rounds per year in May and October. This new source of funding will be very important to our villages and we need to ensure we can get the best from it. For more details see www.midsuffolk.gov.uk then planning then CIL. New electoral ward boundaries: The Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) has proposed new district council ward boundaries. Currently Haughley and Wetherden are in a ward together with one district councillor serving you. The new proposal is for Haughley and Wetherden to be with Old Newton, Gipping and Stowupland – and to have two district councillors. The proposals are out for consultation until 30th April – see:

http://www.lgbce.org.uk/all-reviews/eastern/suffolk/mid-suffolk or look at Mid Suffolk’s website. The outcome of the consultation will be advised in August and new elections held in May 2019. If the current proposals go ahead you will be voting for two district councillors in May next year. Rachel Eburne 01449 774647 [email protected] http:/racheleburne.com/

REPORTING POTENTIAL CRIMES TO THE POLICE There have been recent reports of anti-social behaviour in Haughley. There have also been concerns about dangerous road conditions in Haughley and Wetherden. If you witness anything, please call the Police. If a crime is happening, call 999, otherwise call 101. You can also report online at: https://www.suffolk.police.uk/contact-us/report-something Some people raise issues with me, our County Councillor or the Parish Council but if the Police haven’t been informed they will not record it or act on it. They say they need the reported information directly to them. I have also complained to the Police and Crime Commissioner about the lack of response to 101 calls. Rachel Eburne District Councillor – Haughley & Wetherden

SCOUT GROUP UPDATE Since our last report. Since half-term, despite the weather, we have completed our Mechanics badge with help from Mark of John Bull Motors who came out on a wet, cold Friday night with an ‘old banger’ and various bits of cars for our scouts to have a go at changing wheels, bulbs etc. In March, Gordon Rainbird, a martial arts teacher from Ipswich, and, Ben, one of our Cub parents came in to talk to the scouts about how to deal with bullying and negative behaviour (insults, aggression). It was an insightful and useful session for all of us. Woolly from the St Elizabeth Hospice came to thank us for the final total of £220.92 raised by the scouts at the Burns Supper. We are very happy to have welcomed two new scouts this term and proud to see our oldest scouts going off independently on a county sailing weekend in May. Cubs have been busy with DIY, making flower boxes and ‘shoe box’ projectors. They have completed Emergency Aid badges and celebrated Chinese New Year as well as joining with Cubs from other groups for a bowling night in Bury. Some of our Cubs and leaders will soon be taking part in practice camps in readiness for a 3-day trip to Rotterdam in the summer. Beavers have, as ever, been busy with games and activities including: their Disability Awareness badge, cooking, and making ‘small worlds’ using boxes and their imaginations. By the time you read this, the Beavers will have been to the very popular 999 Day, arranged by Stowmarket District Beaver team, where the emergency services give their time and good will to help Beavers from all the local groups complete Emergency Aid and Safety badges, make a lot of noise with sirens and (if we are lucky) give the Beavers a once in a lifetime opportunity to be shut in the back of a police van. The Beaver term will end with an Easter Bunny Hunt in Wetherden. Our two young leaders are working hard towards their Duke of Edinburgh awards, with camps and expeditions planned over Easter. We are all looking forward to the daylight and the summer term when all three sections will be ‘off out’ as often as possible. We currently have spaces for girls and boys aged 10-14 in the scout troop. We meet on Friday evenings 7.30-9pm. Contact Acting Scout Leader, Colin Winter (details at front of Parish News) or Julia Norman, Assistant Scout Leader. For Beavers (6-8 years) and Cubs (8-10½ years), please put children on the waiting lists as early as possible by contacting the leaders at the front of the Parish News. The Beaver section, in particular, has a long waiting list and children generally need to be on it by pre-school age, at the latest, to be sure of getting place when they are 6.

MID SUFFOLK VIDEO CLUB Our March meeting was most interesting. We had the pleasure of hearing from Doug Hammond. Doug applied for a job at the BBC in 1963 and was asked for an interview then trained to be a camera man. This was about the time that The Television Centre opened up with 8 studios. Doug took us through the development of TV and equipment up to the latest in LED technology. He explained how cameras have come from large bulky items to so small that it is possible to attach one to an Eagle flying round the Alps. He was sent to Glasgow and became involved in filming “Doctor Finlay” and outside broadcasting including “GrandStand.” He was one of the team filming the icon film of climbing Hoy. Which was one of the first live outside broadcasts in the sixties. It was incredible the amount of effort required. The army were brought in to help. Heavy bulky equipment was taken across on ferries. Establishing a base was difficult as all the equipment had to be carried up the mountain by hand as the ground was too wet for even a tractor. Then they had to face a hurricane type wind which blew all their tents and small equipment around. Having endured these conditions they managed to produce an iconic film that is a classic in rock climbing circles. All while broadcasting live so viewers could watch. Doug then went on to be a floor manager, producer, and executive producer. For two hours we heard of the progress of television but the time flew by. We all enjoyed a fascinating insight into the world of television. Ann Evans We hold our meetings the first Tuesday of the month at 1.30 at Hill Side, Stowmarket IP14 2 BD. Or contact membership secretary Ann Evans on 01728861566 for information.
