The OVENDEN CompanyCoastal DefencesThe first contract awarded was a beach nourishment contract in 1997 at Sandwich Bay in Kent. Since this time we have continued to carry out similar contracts in many other parts of the UK and Europe.

Various rock structures have been constructed, including revetments, groynes, reefs and hybrid rock/precast concrete reefs ranging from 3,000 - 80,000 tonnes.

Many beach renourishment schemes have been completed involving hundreds of thousands of cubic metres of fill.

We have invested heavily in specialist plant for these works, low ground pressure bulldozers, dumptrucks, wheel loaders, excavators and grapples. All of which run on biodegradable oils to safeguard the fragile environment in which we often work.

The entire fleet consists of up-to-date plant, which along with strict maintenance schedules, our own fitters on 24 hour callout, extensive workshop facilities and parts stock, ensure that the machines are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week, as is often required on projects of this nature.

It is with great pleasure that I introduce the third edition of the Havant Borough Business Directory. The borough is a vibrant and confident one - this is reflected in the range and quality of businesses based here, and the successes they have and continue to achieve.

Well connected by transport infrastructure, well served by colleges and academia, and wonderfully represented by both a strong manufacturing base, presence of global companies and a highly- skilled labour force, Havant really is a quality environment for business. Whether a fledging business or a relocating company, its unique offer is a compelling one.

As well as being a centre of business excellence, Havant also has a lot to offer employees. Nestled between a coastline (recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and the South Downs National Park, Havant Borough has an invigorating offer, and the transport connections that serve businesses so well ensure that residents are culturally and commercially supported. Havant’s great location – popular with tourists and water sport fans as well as residents - is a personal incentive as well as a practical business consideration.

This directory provides you with an insight into what the business offer is in the borough – I hope this is a first step into a long, fruitful and prosperous future together.

The Borough of Havant is located on the south coast of England in the south eastern part of Hampshire. The population is just over 120,000 (2011 census). Key areas include:

Havant Havant today has a vibrant economy of global interest, with particular strengths (and projected growth) in advanced manufacturing, marine, advanced engineering and defence/IT sectors. It has 162,000 square metres of additional business and commercial opportunities at its disposal to complement existing business space.

The town is long established; it is an old market town which was mentioned in the Domesday Book and received its first charter in 1200. It occupies a key strategic location in the Solent sub-region, placed at the interchange between the A3(M)/A27, M27 corridor with strong connections to Portsmouth, Southampton and London.

Havant became an important industrial centre in the Middle Ages based on its natural springs. It has remained an important manufacturing centre. It has a leisure centre, award-winning arts centre, major shopping centre and two markets a week.

Introduction to the area

It has a main railway station with direct services to London, Brighton, Portsmouth and Southampton. It also has a key bus station, Jobcentre, Council Offices and other public buildings.

WaterloovilleModern Waterlooville is a thriving settlement, with significant, cutting-edge retail areas and established national businesses thriving in a popular residential area.

This suburban area which occupies the western side of the borough (west of the A3M) is a relatively new creation. It became a parish in 1858 and by the 1920s had a population of only 600. There has been huge growth in this area which now extends from the northern edge of Portsmouth in the south to beyond the Havant border in the north and into East Hampshire. Waterlooville has a large town centre, leisure centre and two major industrial estates. It continues to expand with the West of Waterlooville Major Development Area. Several thousand new houses and a large employment area will be built in this locality, which will extend into the Winchester City Council area.
