callous governmentIn Musings Th e Africa in India (TSI, June 3) Prasoon S Majumdar's write-up has thrown light on children forcibly trained and employed in the private army of naxals in north-eastern parts of India and Chhattisgarh refl ects the sorry state of aff airs in the country as far as child rights are concerned. When UN in its convention wanted child labour to be eradicated completely, recruitment of children going on unabated. Looking at the enormity of the problem and the an-gusihed cry for justice for children, cal-lous government and toothless laws coming in the way have only resulted in continuation of this social malaise. It is a sad commentary that even the stark realities faced by child soldiers in Africa since decades leading to children af-fl icted with serious and dreaded diseas-es has neither unnerved nor moved the government of India to take remedial steps to put an end to this menace. As the existing laws on child rights are inef-fective, it is imperative that the society at large are sensitised on issues realting to child rights in order to prevent recruit-ment of children as child soldiers by nax-als even in extremely adverse economic conditions. By this, children will be saved from becoming victims of drug addicts and criminals so that they can learn, play and enjoy thier childhood.

it's time for IndiaTh is refers to Prasoon S Majumdar's ar-ticle Th e Africa in India (TSI, June 3). It is a matter of great shame that extrem-

ists use helpless children as their puppet. Th is is insane that extremists call war against democratic state. It is farcical when they say that they are fi ghting for protecting rights and demand of com-mon people. Statistics say extremists in India attack common people more than political leaders to show their strength and reach. Th e Indian government should take signifi cant measure to cease the growing violence of the extremists.

failure of mediaWhat Arindam Chaudhuri has in his editorial Rekha and Jaya Bachchans Silsila (TSI, May 27) tried to put for-ward, turned out to be an epoch-making treatise on dos and donts of the media in context with Indian democracy where the press is reckoned as even more dead-ly and decisive than a sword. Th e failure of media in championing the causes of social welfare and national development has become an argumentum baculinum in the wake of the burning issues and concerns raised by the editor. But at the same time is it not hard to digest this bitter truth that the contemporary infor-mation technology era has given an in-triguing formula for success that is to sensationalise trivial issues or making an issue out of a non-issue. Th ey have failed to report the number of deaths oc-curring due to starvation, penury and myriad other problems. Th is kind of coverage has become the business ethics to survive in the present milieu for TRPs. Th en why would the media venture upon highlighting the trials and tribula-

It refers to "Where are our Etan Patzs and Charles Lindberghs?" (TSI, May 20) in which Arindam Chaudhuri while narrating the stories of kidnapping of a six-year-old child called Etan Patz in 1979 and that of a little boy called Charles Lindbergh in 1932 in the USA, has compared their police investiga-tions with that of our country. Th e ini-tiative taken by the US President Ron-ald Reagan deserves appreciation who not only declared May 25th the day of Etans disappearance as the Missing Childrens Day but also laid down Th e National Centre for Missing and Ex-ploited Children which since then has

tracked down more than 1,50,000 kids and as per statistics. It is really a re-markable achievement while in our country the scenario is very grim. Be-tween 2008-11, about 240000 children were reported missing, mostly from Mumbai, Calcutta and New Delhi, where they were sold to rich families as domestics, industrial slaves and sex slaves. Eighty years aft er Lindbergh was kidnapped, there are such cases hap-pening in hundreds every day in India. Alas, in the land of mice there is no one to bell the cat!

tions of BPL families? Th e dilemmas are galore for the self-introspection. Th ere is an ardent need to sweep such things out of the system to reinstate what we may call watchdog journalism role of the media.

    Shreeprakash Sharma,Bihar

yellow journalismIt refers to a thought provoking editorial by Arindam Chaudhuri "Rekha and Jaya's Silsila... decay of Indian media " (TSI, May 27), making an apt analyses that although the media demands special privileges, claiming itself as the fourth pillar of Indian democracy, to serve a national purpose yet it is a sad reality observed over the last two decades that its total commercialisation has aff ected

the social conscience and pursuit of public good. When a lot of hue and cry has been raised over the state-run TV putting focus on Jaya during Rekha's oath taking in the Rajya Sabha, he is right to pose a serious question that are these the real issues that concern India?

primary importance. Th e true purpose of the game is naturally exploited in forms of betting, match fi xing, etc. Th e recent controversies involving Shah Rukh Khan, the molestation episode and the latest of players being busted in the Mumbai rave party only make the game more focused in off the fi eld record. Th e audience have lost interest in the game because of these factors. Cricket is in ardent need to be brought out of this clutter.

support pmTh e editorial by Arindam Chaudhuri An open letter to Sonia, Rahul and Manmo-han (TSI, June 3) has a knack of out of the box thinking. His presentation of cav-alcade of happenings in shaping India's destiny was eye opening. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has the right creden-tials to lift India from the present eco-nomic crisis. And we should support him in his endeavour. India needs robust op-timistic leadership in all walks of life.

BEST LETTERS OF THE WEEK plant a saplingTh is refers to the cover story Th e new jungle book (TSI, June 3). Th e story must have touched the souls of the read-ers, looking at the way hu-mans are indirectly or direct-ly engaged in destroying the nature today. Th e forests are destroyed and trees are cut by the unmindful people, who are unaware of the ecological and environmental devasta-

tion. It is heartening to fi nd real good Samaritans of Na-ture like Jadav Payeng, Kamal, Ashok, Prabhu and others like them, who are venturing to save nature by safeguard-ing the left over forestry to save humanity from total an-nihilation. While going through the sacrifi ces made by these eco-angels to protect the environment aft er realis-ing the catastrophic dangers

that loom large over mankind on account of depletion, is simply commendable. It is important to make the people aware of the harmful impact on the environment and work together with them and con-tribute to their selfl ess mis-sion. A small step towards saving the environment can be achieved by planting a tree every week or at least a month as feasible.

evangelistsTh is refers to Th e new jun-gle book (TSI, June 3). Aft er going through the cover sto-ry, I could not stop appreciat-ing the contribution of Jadav Payeng, Jagat, Chogalal and others. Th ey should be given the title Evangelists of Moth-er Nature. It is evident from the way they have sacrifi ced their lives and shredded their hard-earned money to retain greenery in the forest and

their immense love and con-cern for Mother Nature. Th e government should take into concern their requirements, so that people like us are en-lightened with their work and be a part of this holy ac-tivity. Kudos to the saviour.

media's hypeIn the editorial Rekha and Jaya Bachchan's Silsila, and the ... decay of Indian media (TSI, May 27) Arindam Chaudhuri has rightly point-ed out on the media's hype on the two actresses sharing the same platform. With the broadcasting media loosing its sanity by repeatedly show-ing the footage, such acts has necessitated that a regulating body should be formed to provide guidelines for cover-ing an incident and to telecast it moderately.

    Satya MurtyKakinada

Of course not. Th e real issues that con-front Indians are farmer suicides, crisis in Indian agriculture, a virtual collapse of the public health and education sys-tem, rampant corruption and so on. It was really strange that the cinestar Rekha while entering the Parliament and dur-ing swearing in ceremony as a Rajya Sabha MP was given a huge media glare. Th e sadist approach of the media was also observed when it focused its atten-tion to another fi lm star of yesteryear and Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan who enjoyed a good deal of rivalry with Rekha as her contemporary. Was it less than yel-low journalism? It remains to be seen what kind of meaningful contribution they will be able to make to the discus-sions and debates on issues of national interest. How much ever the media would like to convert the parliament to a stage for histrionics between Jaya and Rekha, they should avoid getting drawn into it and remain focused on the pur-pose that they are there for.

    Suman KukalAmbala Cantonment.

reset cricket normsIt refers to the Special Story Horses for courses (TSI, June 3). Th e IPL teams comprise players from all over the world, who are bought at a premium price. Th e gentlemans game has been turned into a purely commercial venture. Unlike nor-mal cricket matches, where players play for the nation, here they play for money alone. To attract the audience and to lend the so-called glamour quotient, cheer girls have been hired. In this version of the game, cricket is of secondary impor-tance and glamour in any form is given
