Have You Heard?Have You Heard?welcome

“We’re moving forward really at the speed of light, and we hope people will join us.” ~Stephanie Foote, President and CEO

Introducing Stephanie Foote, Girl Scouts of Colorado’s new president and CEOI am very excited to join Girl Scouts of Colorado as your new President and CEO. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed volunteering with Girl Scouts of Colorado since 2007 as Chair of the Board of Directors. Now I look forward to partnering with our wonderful staff, volunteers, girls and supporters in continuing to grow Girl Scouts of Colorado into one of the nation’s best Girl Scout councils.

I am a lifelong Coloradan and have served as a leader of many statewide initiatives. I was the first woman to serve as Deputy Mayor and the only woman to serve as Manager of Public Works for the City of Denver, under Wellington Webb. I have sons, so Girl Scouts is where I can make my contribution to help girls step up as the future leaders in our state and our world. I believe in Girl Scouting, and I look forward to introducing more Colorado girls to our proven leadership experience.

Watch Stephanie’s welcome video to learn more about her and her vision for Girl Scouts of Colorado.

Every journey needs a great Guide! Last year, GSUSA introduced The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting—a new national Girl Scout program designed to be more contemporary, fun and engaging for girls and leaders.

2012 is the Year of The Girl, and what better way to empower young women than to educate them through traditional legacy badge work, but with contemporary topics.

The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting is meant to be a personal, customizable badge and award activities book and every Girl Scout deserves her own!

All new badges and awards are available at all Girl Scouts of Colorado shops statewide and on our new web store.

*Because The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting is a customizable publication, Girl Scouts of Colorado shops cannot accept returns for refund or exchange after a Guide has been purchased. We encourage you to visit the GSCO classifieds at gscoclassifieds.com to swap non-returnable merchandise with other members and volunteers across Colorado.

Service Unit meetings for any scheduleGirl Scouts of Colorado is offering online Service Unit meetings every month to accommodate everyone’s schedules. We know everyone has crazy schedules and we want to make sure you have information in a timely manner. In-person meetings are important, but if you cannot attend your local Service Unit meeting, this is an alternative. We welcome you to join us and if the times don’t work for you, watch the video recording when your schedule allows and contact your Membership Manager if you have questions.

This is a monthly meeting for all volunteers in Colorado. We cover the items on the statewide Service Unit Agenda, including:

• council updates• news• program ideas• time for Q & A• mini-trainings with special guest presenters

Staff from Membership, Product Sales, Volunteer Services, Camp and Program will be available. Visit girlscoutsofcolorado.org/virtual-service-unit-meetings. Join us from wherever you are!

Event registration changes in OctoberWe’re moving girl program events registration onto the eBiz platform (the same system currently being used for member registration and training) later this fall. You can still search for activities on the website, then click the Register Online button to register for that event. From there you’ll see a few differences, but the process will be simple and easy to use.

We’re dedicated to reaching all girls and volunteersGirl Scouts has new Spanish language program resources to help. Two Spanish language books (one for Brownies and one for Juniors) are now available. They are written so girls and adults can use them together. In one friendly resource, you’ll get everything you need to have a fun Girl Scout year.

Bilingual volunteer mentors are neededWith our dedication to reaching all girls and expanded Spanish language program, recruitment and training materials and web presence, we need more bilingual volunteers and advisory board members. Contact Volunteer Services at [email protected].

Girl Scout VoicesTell us…what’s IMPORTANT to you? What’s important about BEING a Girl Scout? How has Girl Scouts affected YOU as a person? One girl can make a difference—girls together can change the world. Start the change—let your voice be heard! Register TODAY for the Girl Scout Voices survey at girlscoutvoices.org.

The Girl Scout Voices survey is open to Girl Scouts of all levels and all Girl Scout volunteers. Parental consent and guidance is required for all surveys taken by girls younger than 13. Survey results will be used exclusively by Girl Scouts of Colorado and Girl Scouts of the USA to better understand the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and program effectiveness.

Have You Heard?Have You Heard?quick tips We want online membership registration to be smooth sailing. If you need help using the online

My Self: [email protected] are empowered to believe in themselves physically, mentally and emotionally. They build self-esteem, develop positive attitudes and learn life-long behaviors that lead to healthy lifestyles.

My Future: [email protected] Scouting opens girls’ eyes to myriad opportunities and helps them learn to set goals, become financially literate and offers them a wealth of mentors and role models to inspire them along the way.

My World: [email protected] girl uses her unique voice to create positive changes in the world. Girls learn about issues, participate in service advocacy and respond when a community needs food, clothing, shelter or care.

My Planet: [email protected] Scouts have always been green. Through Girl Scouting, girls explore the Colorado ecosystems and learn how to positively impact the environment.

Highest Awards: [email protected] Highest Awards (Bronze, Silver and Gold), are the capstones for the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Girl Scouts of the USA has set age-appropriate standards for the three award levels, following the Take Action process experienced in the Journeys. The Journeys used to satisfy the prerequisite for Highest Awards must be at the appropriate level and earned while the Girl Scout is registered in that level.

• Bronze Award: Junior level Journey • Silver Award: Cadette level Journey • Gold Award: Senior or Ambassador Journeys

Travel and Destinations: [email protected] Learning to plan trips and travel as a group is one of the basic experiences in Girl Scouting. Travel is about fun, exploration and progressive experiences in appreciating the outdoors, new places and other cultures. As girls grow more experienced, their scope of travel broadens to include travel across the country or abroad. In 2013, Girl Scouts of Colorado will offer an amazing international travel opportunity “From London to Lucerne.” Application deadlines for this trip are approaching fast and space is limited. Visit girlscoutsofcolorado.org or email [email protected] for details.

Girl Scouts of Colorado is a Super Six cookie council this year! We’ll sell the top six cookie varieties: Thin Mints, Tagalongs, Do-si-Dos, Trefoils, Samoas and Savannah Smiles.

“I love the Super Six format! It just makes so much sense from the standpoint of inventory management—on the part of everyone from girls to the council. Especially with the direct sale, it is easier on the girls to only manage six varieties in their wagons and boxes. It makes it easier to stock booth sales, and almost everyone loves one of these cookies so there are no huge quantities remaining of a slow seller.” ~Kathy Brandon, Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma

funding the leadership experience

Join us in achieving a generational leap in leadership opportunities for today’s girls.

For 100 years—four generations—Girl Scouts has been creating the next generation of leaders. Those of us who have been involved in Girl Scouts know why the program is a launching pad for professional achievement:

• Nearly 70 percent of women in Congress were Girl Scouts.

• More than two-thirds of those whose success has earned them a listing in Who’s Who of American Women were Girl Scouts.

• 93 percent of female astronauts were Girl Scouts.

A gift to Girl Scouts of Colorado keeps programs going for 30,000 future female leaders in our state. Annually, it costs $384 to provide quality programming for each Girl Scout in Colorado. $276 will come directly from girls through the Girl Scout Cookie Program, leaving $108 to be raised through Girl Scout families and community friends.

For the last century, Girl Scouts has done more than any other organization to provide leadership opportunities for girls. A gift of $25, $50 or even $384 will change lives and impact communities by supporting future women of distinction through:

• Camp and event subsidies —girls and leaders enjoy a variety of outdoor experiences, events and programs, all of which is council subsidized to ensure quality and affordability.

• Resources for volunteers—publications, web-based tools, materials, education/training, resource centers and equipment loans help our adult volunteers provide a quality Girl Scout experience.

• Opportunity grants —give every girl a chance to participate in Girl Scouting, no matter what her financial or living situation.

Here are some examples of how a gift benefits all Girl Scouts:

• $25 provides program materials and support that guide a girl toward earning her Gold or Silver Award.

• $50 helps maintain and operate our camp properties and program centers.

• $113 provides membership dues assistance, Girl Scout pins, badges and dues for one low-resource troop.

• $250 sponsors a girl to attend resident camp.

• $384 provides the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to one girl for a year.

We are asking every family to consider a gift to support the Girl Scout Leadership Experience by giving a tax-deductible contribution. Gifts can be made through the online membership registration system or anytime at girlscoutsofcolorado.org/family-campaign.

Please share this information with the Girl Scout families in your troop or group and help Girl Scouts achieve a generational leap in leadership.

If you are a government employee, you might also want to support Girl Scouts through one of the combined campaigns: CFC # 32336, CCC #4034 or DECC #4033. You can also designate your United Way gifts to Girl Scouts of Colorado.
