RESIDENT CORNER

Can you think of a better way to start the New Year than joining 10 of your Menno Haven friends (and our leader, Chris

Mellito) to take part in a three-step delight? That’s what we did on January 3 when we went to the Appalachian Soda Works Factory in Mechanicsburg, PA.

This segment of the Appalachian Brewing Company is best known for its variety of root beers but also makes a line of Lily’s Sodas with a significant portion of the sales donated to Penn State Children’s Hospital Child Life Program. (A 15-year-old named Lily has been a patient of this Hospital for several years.)

After an excellent film explaining the company’s history, we donned our proper aprons, eye-wear, and hair/mustache netting and we were led on a private tour through the factory and introduced to the entire soda-making operation.

The process is highly automated and has been fit very creatively into a prior auto dealership building. A delightful tour guide explained all steps of the process and willingly answered all of our questions.

After the tour, we made our own individualized bottles of soda, picking from a wide variety of syrup choices. Each of us brought home two 12-ounce bottles of our sodas, complete with labels and carrying boxes.

The third stop was an onsite restaurant where we ate from a varied menu of luncheon choices. As we boarded the bus, I heard one member of the group tell Chris, “If you offer this trip again in the future, I want to go again.” Me, too.

Recycling tip of the month: If you recycle #1 and #2 plastics that contain items such a hand lotion, peanut butter, shampoo, and other substances that are sticky, you need to clean out the container completely.

Also, cat owners, do not dispose of the cat feces in the toilet. The feces may contain a harmful parasite that is not removed by the sewage treatment system and can get into the surface water.

Solar energy survey: We received over 100 replies from our solar survey; nearly 70% indicating they are in favor of moving forward. Residents who responded were willing to donate about half the cost of the system. Now we will look for potential donors from outside the community.

GREEN TEAM NEWSIf you would like to help fund the solar system and did not respond to the survey, contact Chuck Nelson in Development Services.

Sustainability: On January 8, Lindsey Lyons, Assistant Director for Sustainability at Dickinson College, spoke to the Green Team and the Board sub-committee on sustainability and outlined what Dickinson College is doing. She also spoke to residents who attended the evening session. Stay tuned for more information about how Menno Haven will move forward with this.

Biodegradable trash bags: The Green Team is investigating trash and doggie bags that are biodegradable. These would reduce plastics in the landfill that take many years to disintegrate. Details will appear in a month or two.

Solar has come to Menno Haven! The pictures show a daytime and nighttime view of the solar installations at Menno Haven! The

Christmas tree lit by solar power was located by the Manor building at Chambers Pointe. There is another one: a solar panel is with the UGI gas meter just off Scotland Avenue, across from the new

Rehabilitation Center.

BOOK WORMSMONTHLY BOOK CLUB

The recent weather has us all looking forward to spring and whetting our appetite for the second year of the Menno Haven Senior

Games in the fall. We encourage you to take advantage of the indoor games that are now available on both campuses. Shake off the doldrums and participate in card games, carpet bocce, shuffleboard, 8-ball pool, corn hole, ladder golf, swimming and table tennis. If your chosen activity isn’t listed, get a couple of friends together and start the activity. If you already have an activity, tell us about it so we can include it in future MHSG.

Avail yourself of the Menno Haven Wellness activities: swimming and other water activities, a variety of exercise classes, exercise rooms and outdoor games at the Life Center. Check with your doctor before starting a rigorous activity, i.e., swimming or exercise program.

As spring arrives and the temperatures rise, we are planning on setting up times and places to practice and enjoy all the activities which are now or will become a part of the annual MHSG.

These activities will be offered, contingent upon your participation, on both campuses. The times and the locations for these activities will be listed on the Menno Haven Monthly Activities Calendar.

Nothing about the 2020 MHSG is set except the dates for this year’s games, September 21 - 25, 2020. We ask for your ideas, your participation and your help to ensure these games continue.

Having a healthy blood pressure is critical to reducing the risk of stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.

The guidelines from the American Heart Association and the College of Cardiology state that a normal blood pressure reading is anything lower than 130/80. How quickly it should be brought down depends on how high it is and how long it has been high.

Blood pressure is made up of two forces the systolic pressure (top number) that pumps blood out of the heart and into the blood vessels, and the diastolic pressure (lower number) is when your heart is at rest between beats.

High blood pressure, known as Hypertension, occurs when the force of the blood pushing against the walls of the blood vessels is consistently too high.

If the blood pressure remains high it can damage the tissue inside the arteries, leaving space for plaque to build up and narrow the inside of the arteries which in turn raises the blood pressure even more and can lead to heart disease, heart attacks and stroke.

Carol Marotte(717) 263-6620

For some people, losing weight, eating healthier foods and exercising can be enough to lower blood pressure. Others may need to make lifestyle changes and add medication.Doctors decide on treatment based on blood pressure readings, risk factors for blood pressure and co-existing health problems. Risk factors for high blood pressure that you can change are quitting smoking, losing weight, exercising, limiting sodium, and managing stress. Preventing or treating high cholesterol, diabetes and sleep apnea can also help. Risk factors that cannot be changed such as family history, age and race should be taken into consideration by your Doctor.

There are various different types of blood pressure medications your Doctor can choose from for your treatment. Doctors can increase the dose or add complimentary drugs depending on how the blood pressure responds. They may also ask to have the blood pressure checked at regular intervals to track the response of the treatment.

To lower your risk, talk to your Doctor or a Nutritionist about changing your diet to include more fruits and vegetables and less processed and high sodium food options. The AMA guidelines advise 30 minutes of moderate exercise on most days of the week or three 10 minute sessions a day will improve health.Keep healthy and have your blood pressure checked routinely.

Investment & Trust ServicesCoats and Scarves and Mittens, Oh my! As winter is upon us, we reach for our outerwear to protect us from the cold and wind. We slide on those boots when we trudge out into the snow. We turn up the heat or put more logs on the fire. We are fortunate that we have easy access to products and services that keep us safe and warm from the harsh winter weather. Preparing ourselves for harsh financial conditions may be a bit more challenging. Financial markets also have cold and blustery days. The ever-changing financial environment can significantly impact our confidence in our investments. That can also be said for our personal lives. Unexpected events or expenses can make us feel like we are weathering a severe snow storm. Finding a comforting solution to these situations requires some heavy equipment. For information on products and services that will help you weather those financial storms contact the Investment & Trust Services Department of F&M Trust. Our representatives can help you review your portfolio and give you the tools to plow through the slippery roads toward a warm, cozy financial future. Call us today at 717.261.3539 to schedule an appointment.

Monthly Security TipWarning Signs of Check Fraud- Edges: Most legit checks have at least one perforated or rough edge. If all edges are smooth, the check may have been printed from a personal computer.- Address: No street address, just a P.O. box or a wrong ZIP code.- Check number: If there's no check number at the upper right-hand corner, or the number doesn't match the check number in the MICR line, you've got a counterfeit.- Amount: Usually it's less than $5,000 because federal rules require that deposits of that size be made available to you within five days. - Paper: Fake checks are often ligher than the paper stock used for authentic checks. - Signature: Stains or gaps around signatures, a digitized appearance, or many up and down pen strokes indicate the payer's signature was printed from a scanned original or was forged. - MICR line: The bottom of a real check has a series of digits in an unusual font, representing the bank routing number, the account number and the check number, generally in that order. This is the MICR, which stands for magnetic ink character recognition. These numbers can be read by specialized check-sorting machines. Fake MICR numbers are often shiny. - Routing number: Typically, the first nine digits of the MICR line make up the routing number, which identifies which bank issued the check. A check with no routing number or with fewer or more than nine digits is clearly a fake.

If you are not expecting a check, it most likely is fraud. Please be cautious. If you would like our staff to look over anything you think is suspicious, please stop in at our Chambers Pointe and Brookview Offices.
