Peterson, MD, associate dean at UCSF Fresno. He has served as interim associate dean since January 2015. Dr. Peterson will oversee the continued development of UCSF Fresno's clinical and academic programs. Dr. Peterson has been chief of medicine at UCSF Fresno for the past 14 years, and he serves as vice chair in the Department of Medicine at UCSF. His clinical and research focus is in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. "I have every confidence that Dr. Peterson will lead UCSF Fresno with vision, vigor and commitment," said Talmadge E. King, Jr., MD, dean, UCSF School of Medicine and vice chancellor for medical affairs. "He will continue to be a trusted leader within the Department of Medicine and the school and will continue to extend UCSF's mission in the San Joaquin Valley." Dr. Peterson was recruited from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 2002. During his tenure in Fresno, he oversaw growth of the Medicine Residency Program from 45 trainees to its current 68 trainees, the development of seven subspecialties with 37 fellows and led fundraising efforts to build the UCSF Fresno Clinical Research Center. We look forward to planning a series of celebrations for the community to meet the new Dean of UCSF Fresno! Watch for more information to come. All UCSF Fresno residency programs that participated in this year'sMatch Day have filled all available positions - representing a 100percent match rate at UCSF Fresno for the sixth straight year!

Match Day occurs every year in March and is the time when medicalschool graduates learn where they will spend the next several in thepostgraduate training necessary to practice medicine in the UnitedStates. As part of the Match Day process, medical school graduatestypically register with the National Resident Matching Program. Whenthe medical school graduate and the prospective medical educationprogram mutually agree on the selection, a "match" has occurred andthe medical school graduate will begin residency training, usually inJuly, at the hospital or program where he/she "matched."

"Match Day is a significant milestone in medical education," saidMichael W. Peterson, MD, associate dean and chief of medicine atUCSF Fresno. "It is a rite of passage for medical students as theyconclude their undergraduate medical education and learn where theywill spend the next three to five years of their lives taking part ingraduate medical education better known as residency training. UCSFFresno is the largest physician training program in the San JoaquinValley and it is our intention to keep the doctors we train here afterthey complete their residency. It is only fitting on Match Day that wecelebrate the medical students we have trained and the residents andfellows who will begin their training with us."

Fresno Celebrates Dr. John BlossomDay

Fresno city leaders named April 19,2016 Dr. John Blossom Day in the cityof Fresno!

City Council members unanimouslyapproved the resolution honoring Dr.Blossom, a longtime clinical professorof Family and Community Medicineand former associate dean of UCSFFresno.

Dr. Blossom is recognized for hiscareer as an educator, in leadershipboth at UCSF Fresno and in hisstatewide role as the California AHEC

(Area Health Education Centers) program director. He has been a life-long advocate for the development of health professions education atcommunity health centers, which provide care to underserved and/orrural communities.

His focus on physician-patient communication and cross-culturalmedical practice has greatly impacted the delivery of health care inthe Central Valley. Our congratulations to Dr. Blossom!

UCSF Fresno Leadership News UCSF Fresno's vastly growing medical education and researchprogram is pleased to announce four newly created assistant deanpositions, that as of July 1 will begin to assist Associate Dean, Dr.Michael Peterson with various aspects of the program. The four newassistant deans include: Dr. Lori Weichenthal, who will be assistant dean for GraduateMedical Education, providing oversight to the residency and fellowshipprograms to support a solid educational environment for our learnerswhile also assuring compliance with the ACGME and other accrediting

organizations.

Dr. Kenny Bahn will serve asassistant dean for UndergraduateMedical Education & StudentServices. As such, Dr. Banh will beleading an expandingUndergraduate Medical Education(UME) Department. UCSF core(required rotations typically in thethird year of medical school),

Longitudinal Integrated Fresno Education (LIFE) and the UCDavis/UC Merced San Joaquin Programs in Medical Education(PRIME) are all examples of programs that fall under UME. Dr. Banhplans to continue to increase UCSF Fresno's attraction as a medicalstudent training site by providing greater student support services andexpanding outreach and pipeline programs.

Dr. Simon Paul will be assistant dean forAcademic Affairs. Dr. Paul will be primarily workingon the appointments and promotion process inFresno and with the academic affairs office at maincampus in San Francisco to make sure theprocesses go as smoothly as possible.

Dr. Wessel Meyer will be assistant dean for VAAffairs. In this capacity, Dr. Meyer will serve as aliaison between the University and the VeteransAdministration, communicating needs,requirements and expectations from both parties.

Chief of Emergency Medicine Prepares forNew Role

UCSF Fresno is preparing to say goodbye to Dr.Greg Hendey, chief of the Emergency Medicineresidency program, who has accepted a newposition as Chair of Emergency Medicine at UCLA.Dr. Hendey has been with UCSF Fresno since1993, serving as the Chief of Emergency Medicinefor the past three years, during which he hasmanaged to split his time amongst administrativeduties, bedside teaching, patient care, research,

mentoring and formal teaching.

"I spent 23 great years in Fresno, where I really learned how to be adoctor and a leader," says Dr. Hendey. "I made great friends here,raised a family, and had the privilege of working with tremendouscolleagues. Although I'm looking forward to a great opportunity to lead

the department of emergency medicine at UCLA, I'll always rememberand value my time and experience in Fresno."

Due to the departure of Dr. Hendey, wecongratulate Jim Comes, MD, clinical professor,who has been appointed as interim chief ofemergency medicine at UCSF Fresno. Dr. Comescompleted his residency at UCSF Fresno and hasbeen on the faculty since 1994. He will assume hisnew role effective June 1.

UCSF Fresno, Clovis Unified, FresnoState Partner to Inspire Latino Students On March 31, UCSF Fresno's Undergraduate Medical EducationDepartment collaborated with two key local educational institutions inthe Clovis Unified School District's Latino Student SuccessConference held at California State University, Fresno. The primarygoal of the conference was to provide inspiration to students to pursuegoals beyond high school. The Latino Student Success Conference provided an excellentopportunity for Latino students to connect with adults on and offcampus that will assist them with mentoring for future academic andprofessional success. In addition to guest speakers and workshops,they students had a chance to experience a Career/College Faircatered specifically for them.

UCSF Fresno Hosts National Conference UCSF Fresno played host to 150 national and international experts onValley Fever at the 60th Annual Cocci Study Group meeting April 8and 9. The annual conference focuses on the latest developments inthe diagnosis and treatment of Coccidioidomycosis - or Valley Fever -as well as a poster presentation by numerous researchers. This wasthe first time this conference has been held in Fresno. The 2016meeting was dedicated to Dr. Hillel Levine, who dedicated his medicalcareer to the study and treatment of Valley Fever. Dr. Levine passedaway in 2015.
