O ver the years as I have practiced and

taught Lomi Lomi I have experienced an

o n going frustration each and eve ry time

someone has asked me, “ what exactly is

Lomi Lomi? How is it different from

________ massage ? ”

There generally follows a lengthy discourse

on various elements of Lomi that in ve ry

broad strokes paints an altogether incom-

plete picture of the practice. It is a Spiritual

wo r k . It incorporates active assisted

s t r e t c h e s . It includes several long flow i n g

s t r o kes with the hands and forearm s . I t

seems familiar, yet different from any t h i n g

yo u ’ ve ever experienced before. The practitioner and client breathe

t o gether as the work unfolds. It is a deep wo r k , a ve ry thorough

m a s s a ge and yet it is gentle and doesn’t leave you feeling as if

yo u ’ ve been pummeled. There is a unity and flow to the work wh e n

p e r f o rmed by a skilled therapist. Lomi Lomi treats the entire per-

son and not just a series of tissues. It is always familiar, but neve r

the same as before. A gifted Lomi therapist will listen with their

h a n d s , hear with their heart and their spirit will reach out to yo u r s

as you are gently nurtured in an env i r o n-

ment of acceptance and safety. It is a

p hysical expression of the spirit of A l o h a .

In a nut shell, you can’t describe it; yo u

must experience it to understand how it is

d i f f e r e n t .

That experiential requirement is demon-

strated in the fact that there are only a few

training videos on Lomi Lomi, and those

f ew have been produced by people from

the mainland that are fairly new to the

p r a c t i c e . When I started practicing Lomi

there were no books on the subject, a n d

only a ve ry few art i c l e s . Historically this

has been an oral, experiential tradition that has been handed

d own from one generation to the next over years of observa t i o n

and study.

To d ay there are several more written texts on Lomi as interest has

spread around the wo rl d . Two of the best are “Na Mo’olelo

Recognition for Animal MassageTherapists Puts Emphasis on

Education and ExperienceFormed in the spring of 2008, the National Board of Certification forAnimal Acupressure and Massage (NBCAAM) certification examinationsoffer national recognition to qualifying practitioners of one or both ofthese gentle healing arts.

Purcellville, VA September 20, 2008 – New certification examinationsoffer animal massage therapists and acupressure practitioners an oppor-tunity to gain national recognition while advancing their professions.

The examinations were developed by the National Board of Certification forAnimal Acupressure and Massage (NBCAAM), a group comprised of veteri-narians and leading animal health care practitioners and instructors thatwas formed in the spring of 2008 to advance standards of professionalcompetency in these rapidly growing fields.

The National Certification Examination for Animal Acupressure & Massage(NCEAAM) actually consists of two separate tests; one for acupressure prac-titioners and one for massage therapists. Applicants for the exams need tohave at least 200 hours of classroom instruction in their field and/or equiv-alent training or experience.

“This is a big step”, said W. Bruce Bregenzer of Companion Animal Touch& Therapies, who offers training for prospective animal massage thera-pists in VA, IL, WI, and NC. “The demand for animal massage services ison the rise, and insuring the quality of care is important.”

Each test covers areas of primary responsibility within the field’s scopeof practice. The massage exam includes questions about anatomy &physiology, massage theory and application, assessment, pathology, andprofessional ethics.

These subject areas, along with development of an approach to gettinganimals to work cooperatively, are addressed in the Small AnimalMassage Training program offered by Companion Animal Touch &Therapies at 3 Dog Farm, LC in Purcellville, VA.

The seventy-two hour program is divided into three twenty-four hour seg-ments, allowing participants to choose the information they need at theirown pace. Introduction to Small Animal Massage deals with techniqueand ‘approach’; Small Animal Anatomy covers anatomy & physiology,first-aid/CPR, and pathology; Evaluation & Ethics includes gaiting andassessment, sports massage, business and ethical issues, and a field tripto work with animals in a local shelter.

“This program is designed to enable people to work safely, effectively, and professionally with animals”, Bregenzer noted. “Qualifying for theNCEAAM would also require applying these principles with a substantialnumber of animals; it’s a win-win situation.”.
