Fellow Philatelists and Friends:

ALOHA, and WELCOME to HAPEX- 81, commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the Hawaiian Philatelic Society . • We have tried to keep the exhibits for this show similar to the exhibits in the first show held by the Society in May 1913. We hope you will find HAPEX-81 interesting and informative.

The Society has come a long way in seventy years. In 1911 the Society had fifteen members, today we have over 320 members . The Society not only holds exhibitions, but has published information on various facets of Philately. We publish PO ' OLEKA O HAWAII on a quarterly basis, and we currently have three books in publication. These are Edward J . Burns ' two books, "Additions to Hawaiian Postal History", Volumes I and II, and L. J . Crampon's book "Areophilatelic Flights - Hawaii & Central Pacific - 1913-1914".

We feel that by doing these things we are helping to promote philately in Hawaii and to promote the study of Hawaiian Philately . If you are interested in joining us , please fill out the membership application found in this program. The various covers prepared by the Society, and the publications mentioned above may be purchased at the HPS sales table or ordered by mail using the order forms found in this program.

Aloha ,

SEVENTIETH ANNIVERSARY HAWAIIAN PHILATELIC SOCIETY

191 1 --- 1981

It had only been twelve years since the last stamps of the Republic of Hawaii were issued. Hawaiian revenues were still in use ; in fact , it would be another two years before the fifty cent yellow orange and $1.00 black (Scott R13 and R14) would be released. Though Hawaii had become a territory of the United States , the former queen, Liliuokalani , was still living in Honolulu .

John Gribble had invited a number of his stamp- collector friends to his home on Thursday evening, April 13, 1911 • Those present were Bruce Cartwright, Jr. , A. F. Cooke, Charles Hustace, Jr. , c. Kasten, William Wolters , F. W. Wood, and Mr. Klemme. After considerable discussi on, they decided to form a stamp club and hold regular meetings at which members would take turns in showing their individual collections. As a name for the club , they selected "Hawaiian Philatelic Society."

Within three months the membership had almost doubled. By June 15 , 1911 it stood at fifteen. (In 1981 for the first time in the HPS history, the membership exceeded 320 . ) Originally, dues were fifty cents annually , after a year this was increased to $1 .00, with foreign member ships at $1.50. (In 1980 the annual dues were $6 .00, with the out-of- state. and foreign memberships at $5 .00.) Also an initiation fee of $1 .00 was established. ( In 1981 the initiation fee remains at $1.00, probably the only item still being sold in the entire nation that has not gone up in price in seventy year s . )

The HPS was strictly a Men's club. A motion was made at the June 1911 meeting to allow ladies to join, but by a unanimous vote this suggestion was tabled. (In 1981 women not only can join, but can also hold office. In fact, the 1981 show is being chaired by one of those who could not have joined the club in 1911.)

Early efforts were made to enlist young collectors. By November 1911, a Junior Club had been formed with a membership of twenty. (Annual dues were set at twenty-five cents.)

' The name, "Hawaiian Philatelic Society", then and now had two meanings. There were, and are, those who consider the HPS as an organization for those interested in the stamps and postal history of old Hawaii. Also, then and now, there are others who view the HPS as an organization of those living in Hawaii interested in stamps and the postal history of any part of the globe. During the early years, U.S. stamps were exhibited and discussed, One meeting was devoted to the Naking Locals. Although it seemed to become the policy of the HPS to emphasize the study and display of Hawaiian philatelic items, early references can be found of those collecting United States, Canada, Great Britain, Africa, New Zealand, Canal Zone, Europe, etc. ( Back in those days there. were no topical collectors, but had there been, the HPS would probably have included in its membership at least one who collected windmills on stamps, horses on stamps, or ships on stamps.)

The holding of an exhibition was earnestly discussed. Plans were made for an exhibit by the juniors to be held at the YMCA on Friday, December 13, 1912. Then came the first big show - held on Thursday, May 8, 1913, in the Games Hall of the YMCA. The scope of the interest of these early HPS members is shown by the subjects of the winning exhibits at this 1913 show:

Hawaiian Monarchy - Charles Hustace , Jr. Hawaiian Provisional Government - A. F. Cooke

United States - John Gribble New Zealand - C. Maxwell

Canal Zone - W. T. Monsarrat Europe - L. Thurston, Jr.

Asia - K. P. Avery

The "Best of the Show" award went to Hustace with what was said to have been a "full and complete" exhibit of the sheets and plating features of the Hawaiian numerals as well as three out of four Missionaries then referred to as the "flower- bordered issues of numerals. "

Hawaiian numerals and Missionaries are still popular at HPS stamp shows. At recent HPS shows, the two cent Missionary, the one lacking from the Hustace collection and one of the world ' s most valuable stamps , has been displayed along with the other three. In fact, it is not uncorrunon to see this aristocrat of philately both mint and used as well as on cover, at HPS exhibitions.

The Monsarrat collection of the Canal Zone must have been interesting. At that time, 1913 , only 35 Canal Zone stamps would have been

. available, all overprints of either Panama or the United States.

One contem!X)rary writer in describing this 1913 show wrote: "Its educational value was apparent from the deep interest manifested by the throng of visitors other than members of the senior and junior philatelic societies in appreciation of the rarities brought out on the occasion ." We cannot help but wonder how the throng of 1913 compared with the throng of 1978 which for three days packed the Ilikai Ballroom for the Captain Cook Bicentennial Stamp Show.
