Happy New Year Hawthorne Families! I love the start of each new year. It reminds me of the first page of a
new story book waiting to be told. It brings with it all of the mystery and excitement of the unknown. Speaking of books! We have some exciting news to share with you. In a few short weeks we are going to begin a
book study with everyone in our Hawthorne family including the staff, students, and YOU our amazing families! Be on the lookout for more
information coming soon! I would like to take a quick minute to remind everyone to please make
sure your students are coming to school with warm coats and gloves; we go outside a lot more for recess than you may think.
Spring, hopefully, will be here before we know it! Until then, have a great beginning to the story of your new year!
Best Wishes,
Angie Ervin

The Next PTO Meeting January 15th 7:00 p.m.
7 Beautiful New Trees Say Hello! 2 Hackberry Trees
2 Swamp White Oaks
2 Red Maples and
1 Sugar Maple
The PTO purchased seven trees and funded the natural playground planning, with
help from the Westerville Education Foundation.
Hawthorne T-Shirt Project
The Hawthorne PTO is funding a Hawthorne Mustangs T-shirt for every student and
staff member at Hawthorne.
Teachers are currently compiling a list of shirt sizes of their students so we can or-
der the correct size. If you have any concerns, you can contact the Hawthorne PTO
and we will check the shirt size spreadsheet for you. You do not need to take any
action. Your student will have a shirt ordered for them without any action from you.
The shirts will be paid for from fundraising efforts of the PTO, and business spon-
sorships.
We anticipate having the shirts ready to distribute during the coming academic
term, probably in February.

VOLME 4
The first grade students have been learning about steady beat through play, movement, and
listening activities. We have been practicing reading music using picture icons and are starting
to transition to stick notation. The students created unique musical compositions using pictures
associated with fall, family, or thanksgiving. They studied Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite" and
completed a variety of activities relating to the work, including a review of the story, listening
excerpts, and movement activities. And, the students continue to explore their voices and devel-
op independence as singers.
The second grade students did an amazing job at their winter concert. I’m extremely proud of
the students. They truly worked hard as a team to create a magical performance and have grown
so much as young leaders and musicians. We are starting our study of steady beat, melody (high
and low), and rhythm (long and short-short). The students will explore these concepts through
movement, listening activities, composition, reading, and singing.
Sincerely,
Mr. McIntyre
Happy 2015! Here is what we are doing in each grade recently.
Third grade Students: We are finishing up learning the Philippino dance called “Tinikling” and
will soon start learning Schoolhouse Rock songs about multiplication facts for a fun 3rd grade
music project. More details next newsletter! Also, 3rd grade is participating in a special project
partnered with the OAAE, Battelle for Kids, and the ODE. Please read the following letter and
return the permission slip if it applies to your family.
Fourth grade students: Students are doing really well on recorder. There are a total of 10 re-
corder belts that students can earn and many students have multiple belts already.
Fifth grade students: Students are VERY excited that we are finally starting our drumming unit.
They will be learning a very complicated piece of music for a performance in the spring.
Thank you for supporting the arts at Hawthorne!
Sincerely,
Sarah McPeak
