Editors Letter....
June glorious June! We have had
the seasons all in one this month!
Sun, rain, hailstones, the British
weather can be so extreme.
Luckily I was in Cornwall last
week in May and struck it lucky
with the weather!
I would like to say a big thank you to everyone
who has contacted me this month with articles
and local events.
We have lots going on in the area, from
musicians playing at the Mowbrays cafe on the
2nd July, a Summer fete on the 23rd July at St
Martins Church, Owston Ferry, Westwoodside
Pond lights disco on the 16th July, Proms in the
church at Owston Ferry on 15th July and The
Rescue Day event at 7 Lakes on the 9th July.
Please support your local events, they are for
good causes.
The deadline for August issue is
Friday 8th July.
Again enjoy the read.

Our advert has been concentrating on both pre and post retirement planning, during the last few months, and
thought it time to concentrate on the protection side of Financial Planning.
We all know that we have to provide for those nearest and dearest to us should we die early or become long
term ill, and there are numerous places that this type of product can be purchased, but do you buy it off the
shelf, or do you get professional advice on the right amount and type of cover that you need.
We search the whole market place to ensure you get the right product for your personal needs, we will also
make sure that the Policy is owned by the person who needs the proceeds should the worst happen, or write
it into trust if this is best suited to your personal needs, all the above is usually included at no additional cost.
Why do we do the above, one example is that if you are self employed and own your own life assurance
policy, then unfortunately die early, your business has to be finalised first, and HMRC paid before probate, can
be finalised. This could delay the payment to your family for up to 1 year or more, and if like the majority you
have not made a Will could be considerably longer.
As stated in previous adverts your first appointment is at our cost, however with regards to protection
advice, we will review your existing arrangements, and if we cannot better what you have already got in place
the review will also be at our cost, so the exercise will have cost you nothing other than the time you spend in our office.
We are also Licensed to take instruction on Will writing.

Slimming Diary I have avoided this day for so long, that's why i have just got bigger over the past 6 months, i just love to
eat everything, especially sweet things and you've guessed it the dreaded chocolate!
I have tried every diet over the past 20 years, always
lost a stone or 2, but just put it straight back on. A few years ago I was 4 stone overweight, I felt out of control! My friends told me how good the Cambridge Diet was, so I thought why not! Within 12 weeks I
had lost 3.5 stone and was the thinnest I had been for years, a size 10-12, I looked fantastic! I kept the weight off for 3 years, but eventually all my old habits
returned, so here i am again wondering how to get rid of the weight! I was so annoyed with myself letting the weight pile back on, but everyone knows with a
weight problem, the problem never goes away, you have to work at it 100%. This is when I decided to ring Debbie at the
Cambridge Diet who is based in Epworth. Debbie sounded so motivated for me to lose the weight again, I hadn‘t even met her and I felt better already!
9 June Weight 15 stone 6 Waist 41‖ Bust 44‖ Hips 46‖
Dress Size 14/16 BMI 35 So its the start of my first month, I'm not sure what it will hold, but I do know I will be back to write
about it. The Secret Slimmer

SOUTH AXHOLME POLICE REPORT
Village Hall, West Street and Parklands,
West Butterwick = Anti-Social Behaviour
and Criminal Damage.
There have been incidents of criminal damage
caused to motor vehicles in the West Street
area of West Butterwick. Also reports of theft
from the Parklands area, where a hot-tub was
stolen from a garden. No specific times have
been identified for these crimes; however infor-
mation gathering are on-going. With the lighter evenings approaching reports of off road
motor bikes are also beginning to be brought to the attention of Neighbourhood staff with
bikes on the field at the hall, these incidents although sporadic at this time with no particular
times of when it occurs, however police and staff will deal with any offenders and bikes will be seized.
The Neighbourhood team together with incident response staff are making regular patrols of the area and will
deal with any offences and offenders committing crime. If anyone has any information regarding any of these
matters please contact any member of the Neighbourhood team or if witnessing any incident please phone
through for an incident log to be created on 0845 60 60 222.
UPDATE; - Calls for service have reduced considerably in the last month. Neighbourhood staff
will continue to monitor the area to ensure this level remains.
Farmland off the B1396 Westwoodside.
Description of the priority: There has been a considerable increase in calls for service to land on both sides of
the B1396 as it leads out of Westwoodside and also down Idle Bank and Pelfintax. The times of reports vary
from early hours to throughout the day. The calls include reports of theft, burglary, suspicious persons with
dogs and criminal damage. A considerable amount of work and liaison has been built between Neighbourhood
staff and the owners and staff working on land to engage them and to identify where offences and offenders are
committing these acts and routes they use. A particular vehicle that was of concern has been stopped and dealt
with by the police, but together with Incident response we will deal with offenders and their vehicles which are
causing a lot of interference with the work on land.
Recent Issues Drugs = Two males were arrested for possession of drugs with intent to supply recently.
Off Road Bike = An off road Bike has been seized after being caught by Neighbourhood Staff in the Haxey area.

Dear Carolyn Editor of the Arrow
Our garage roof needed re-roofing, so we contacted
Eliot, the proprietor of EPG Roofing Ltd. Having
found his advertisement in The Arrow. He arrived
exactly on time gave us a very reasonable quote,
and carried out the work with first class materials
and stayed until it was completed, took away all
rubbish, and did an excellent tidying up job. We
were delighted with his professionalism and
workmanship.
We shall certainly use the Arrow again, when
searching for a local tradesman, or any other
service.

Garden Open for NGS 23 & 24,
30 &31 July 11:00am to 4:00pm Fieldhouse Farm Field Lane Wroot
Could there be a more enjoyable way to give to
charity than an enjoyable and relaxing couple of
hours strolling around a beautiful garden, pausing to
have a cup of tea and sample delicious homemade
cakes?
Sue Dare Garden Designer and owner designed this
garden 8 years ago as a garden to walk around and
relax in and to provide a stage for
exuberant planting.
Paths lead around large borders
which include cottage and prairie
style planting, a pond with decked
seating area and colourful planting,
willow structures, metal and ce-
ramic sculpture, water features,
bamboo screen clothed in climb-
ers, small shade garden, topiary, a
poly tunnel and green house with
productive vegetable garden and
lots of seating areas.
There is also a sculpture trail
around the garden with many
interesting and unique sculptures
in a variety of media e.g. wood,
metal, wire, glass, and ceramic. In the house there is a small art exhibition with watercolours, oils, acrylics
and painting on silk plus small ceramic sculpture, and fused glass jewellery. And if you have any Garden
Design questions or problems Sue will be happy to talk to you.
This gardening year has been exceptionally challenging with the extreme cold weather of autumn followed
by an exceptionally warm
dry spring with a late air
frost. We have had to
work extra hard to fill the
gaps left by the large
plants and shrubs killed by
the difficult weather. We
decided to see this as an
opportunity to revitalise
our planting and have
grown lots of annuals to
fill the gaps whilst more
permanent planting gets
going. So those of you
who have visited the
garden before will find we
look a bit different and
hopefully more colourful
than ever.

Communication is very important in life - saying what you feel and think, and under-
standing what makes others tick. If it‘s that important, how then does God communicate with us? And
how do we communicate with God?
God communicates with us through the Bible, teaching us about himself, as well as showing us how we
should live in a way that will make us much happier human beings.
Another way that God communicates with us is through a little voice inside us that I believe is his Holy
Spirit guiding us.
And sometimes God uses other Christians to help us know the right way ahead.
And how do you and I communicate with God? If you can talk, then you can talk to God, and you don‘t
need any special language. What should we say in our prayers? I find the following simple and easy-to-
remember guidelines quite helpful:
Look up – tell God what you think of him, thank him for all the things you are inclined to take for
granted.
Look in – say sorry to God for the wrong things you have said or done, or that you should have done
and failed to do.
Look around – think of others who need God‘s help, and name them before him.
Look forward – we all have our own needs and worries about the future. We read in the Bible that we
should cast all our anxieties on God because he cares for us. So don‘t be afraid to tell God about the
things that trouble you, and ask him to guide and help you.

On the afternoon of Friday 20 May Westwoodside Church of England School held an exhibition of children’s work on the theme of ‘Celebrations’ in our hall. There was a tremendous display of learning from F1 (Nursery) to Year 6, including celebrating:-
200 years of Church Schools 400 years since the King James Bible Diversity e.g. Passport Days and Rhymes from Around the World RE Festivals The Wonders of Nature.
Several Parents/Carers etc. enjoyed visiting our exhibition and all the classes in School had the opportunity to look around. A special thank you should go to the child ‘experts’ from each class who were available in the exhibition to explain and answer questions.
We have been successful in obtaining a free Bible for each child in Years 2 to 5 from a charity called Bibles for Children who also funded this year’s Bibles which will be presented to our Year 6 children at their Leav-ers’ Service in July. Each Year 2 to 5 child will have their own Bible, with a personalised presentation sticker, to keep and use in School and will be able to take their Bible home when they leave. The Haxey Endowed Trust has very kindly agreed to fund Bibles for each child in Year 2 and Year 6 in future years.
Best wishes

Where You Live Your Local History Adapted by Anthony Catherall
EPWORTH FREE SCHOOL The Rev. Henry Clifford, Rector of Wroot and predecessor of Samuel Wesley, set up
Epworth Free School in 1711. Seven trustees and their heirs were appointed. The schoolmaster was provided with a house. Some land was allocated to provide for the school:
Schoolhouse croft 1 acre 1 rood 12 perches Church field 3 roods 5 perches South field 1 rood 27 perches East field 1 rood 28 perches Bellshaw 3 acres 3 roods 2 perches
Total: 6 acres 2 roods 34 perches.
A limit of 14 scholars was fixed when the school opened. In 1829 the number was
increased to 20. Instruction was restricted to reading. Parents wishing their children to be taught writing had to pay 2/6 or 3/- (pre 1971 currency) a quarter. No child could stay at
school for more than three years. In 1856 the school abolished any payment. In 1873 the
Council of Education suggested that a school be set up to cope with 120 boys or 100 infants on or near the site of the Free School. A trustees meeting of 1874 was asked that the school
be used as a Parish School, but this was refused. However, a piece of land in Battle Green was bought to set up a Board School. Mr. George Mason the master, opened this on October
6th 1876. The Free School finally closed in July 1880 and the 20 free scholars were
transferred to the Board School.

After completion of a new extension we have had a very busy time here at
Coneygarth Farm Day Nursery. A new viewing area for the Out of School Club has enabled
children to see more of the farm and has been a huge success. After Christmas the children were able to
watch the Lincoln Red cattle who all calved within 2 months. It is very exciting to watch the cows and
sheep, from such a short distance and see how they behave.
Next came lambing which is always a huge success with with the children and parents, this coincides with
the Easter Holidays so the children at the holiday club also enjoyed this experience.
This month all the sheep have been brought in for shearing and 3 hours later they were back grazing in the
field enjoying the sun without their winter coats on and thankfully all the baby lambs found their
mummies again!!!
These are just a few of the things the children can experience at the nursery along with tending the
vegetable garden, collecting eggs from the resident hens and
playing in the nursery wood, large garden and willow den and
of course covering all aspects of the Early Years Foundation
Stage.
We are now busy preparing for the summer holidays which
will be action packed and exciting!
If you are interested in either Nursery places or Holiday
Club (5-11yrs) do not hesitate to contact us and arrange a
visit ALSO don't forget we offer 15 HOURS FLEXIBLE

As part of supplementing and sup-
porting the curriculum, Year 5 of
Haxey Primary School excitedly
travelled to Eden Camp War Mu-
seum, for an introduction on our
topic World War II. When we eventually entered Eden Camp, after a
restless journey we drove through the gates and
there in front of us was a huge war plane.
We were split into groups and we walked around
each hut, and in every one there was a surprise.
There were a few huts that stood out to me. The
Blitz, evacuation, the streets and the jobs.
In the Blitz it was like standing in a house with bombs dropping all around you. It started off where there
was information but then, as our group turned the corner, I was frightened right down to my toes. There
was a hand moving from underneath the rubble. At that moment my heart was pounding, so I quickly
walked out of the hut.
The other hut I enjoyed was the evacuation I thought it was going to be like the Blitz and scare me so I
held my breath, and nervously stepped through the door. I trembled round a corner but it was nothing
like the Blitz at all. It actually touched my heart. On the walls were old photographs of children being
evacuated. I saw children crying and saying goodbye to their family as they might never see them again.
Near to the end we went to the hut about the bombed streets. I peered through the door and an awful
smell hit my nose. It smelt like candles that had just been blown out but worse there was a picture of
Winston Churchill looking at the damage of the street. There was also a picture of a huge wall that had
fallen over.
The last hut my group went to was on jobs. I found
out when all the men went to war the women had to
do all the men‘s jobs, which the women thought was
a great honour. The women‘s jobs were farming,
making bombs and much more. I learnt alot about
World War II at Eden Camp, and I know it will help
me alot in class. I found it really realistic with the
smells and the models. I loved the trip. From it I
would like to learn more about the evacuated chil-
dren.

HAXEY & WESTWOODSIDE HERITAGE
SOCIETY REPORT
At the June meeting of the society members welcomed the Rev.
Richard Plant whose talk for the evening was ‗Roman Coins‘.
Before going into the detail of individual coins of the Roman
Empire, Richard explained how previous to the introduction of
coins in 269BC bartering was the system used with cows one of
the means of trade.
Using slides to demonstrate individual coins Richard showed how
coins became a means of proclaiming events from battles (Trophy
coins) to personalities, coins were also used to promote
individuals aspirations to power as these were minted by the
persons themselves rather than by the Roman mint.
Coins varied in size, weight and material according to their value,
originally ranging from ½ oz. to 12oz. in copper, bronze and silver,
the development of Roman coins with their various denominations
and identifying symbols led directly to our own (now defunct) Pounds, Shillings and Pence
Librae Solidi Dinarii = £. s. d.
When important Romans died they were deified thus becoming gods with many coins depicting this,
Richard completed his presentation by inviting members to view a display of his own coin collection.
Giving the ‗vote of thanks‘ Mr. Geoff. Starr thanked Richard for a talk that had taken the audience through
Roman history and had reminded us of our own history depicted in our pre-decimal coinage.
Prior to introducing the speaker the chairman, Mrs. Jackie Starr, had welcomed new member Simon
Burgess and visitor Malcolm Dalby to the meeting, the members were also told that the society‘s
secretary, Mrs. Mary Spalding, was progressing well after her hospital operation.
Members were reminded of forthcoming events, Haxey Parish week-end 25/26 June, Misterton Gala
9th.July and were given an early invitation to attend the Society‘s final Literary Award presentation at the
Primary schools Leavers Service at St. Nicholas Church, Haxey on Wednesday 13th. July.
The meeting closed with refreshments served.
The next meeting of the Society will be on Thursday 14th. July when Mr. Aubrey Lindley will speak on ‗Farming in the Isle‘.

On the first Monday of the month,
instead of the usual second,
members of the club were
entertained by June Borrowdale, a
North East Demonstrator from
Carlton-in-Lindrick with her
demonstration entitled ―Buds,
Blooms and Twigs‖. June used twisted
willow, contorted hazel and silver painted materials
for her ―twigs‖ and created beautiful designs with
snapdragons, tulips of different shades, carnations,
tiny orchids and chrysanthemums amongst many
others. She decorated a large screen with ivy and
shamrock chrysanthemums and used dainty red
roses, completing the beautiful and original
arrangement with Gloriosa Lilies, a flower new to
many of the members. For another arrangement
June created a cage into which she inserted
honeysuckle, campanula, purple flocks, stilby and a
rose named Rosamunde which represents the
white rose of Yorkshire and the Lancastrian red
rose.
To conclude the evening and in celebration of the
club‘s 50th anniversary year, June created a golden
anniversary arrangement using gilded palm leaves,
gilded fatsia, sphinx roses, golden yellow carnations
and tiny cream orchids.
As she demonstrated June gave one or two
teaching points and told us of her experience of
being examined to become an Area Demonstrator.
She also told us of the honour she felt at being
chosen to be part of a team to display at Chelsea
Flower Show next year.
The enjoyable evening was concluded with a raffle
and the usual tea and coffee.
The next meeting of the flower club will be on
Monday 11th July at
7.30p.m.in the

May 18th was a competition night and it really had members of
Axholme Camera Club members scratching their heads. The final competition
of 2010 - 11 season was entitled "Elements - Earth, Wind, Fire and Water". A vast array of very inter-
esting and enterprising prints were entered from most of the members, plus there was some very artistic
creativity from others.
The judge, Mr Ernie Jackson from Doncaster openly admitted it was his first time every that he had come
across a competition with such an ambitious title. However, he set about to deliver the best print, firstly
looking for technical quality while also portraying the competi-
tion title. He had difficulty both in the coloured and Mono
sections, having narrowed them down to two print in each
class. In the colour he was unable to separate the two so
awarded both 20 points. Sandy Sanderson entered a very
creative print called "Consuming the Elements" and Ivan
Sedgewick put forward a Yorkshire landscape including a
steam train in motion, called "Northern Lights Elements".
While in the Mono section the judges answer was to ask for a
coin as there was nothing between them, nevertheless, after
very close scrutiny he gave David Neale 20 points for his print
entitled "Behind the Waterfall" and 19 points to George
Fiddler for his print titled "Sunshine After the Storm" .
Other high scorers on the night were Jan Neale 19 points and
an 18 points in the mono section, Guy Myers 18 points and
Peter Webster 18 points in the colour section.
Later Mr Ernie Jackson thanked the club for inviting him to
judge such a display of good quality prints.

Haxey Rainbows enjoyed an exciting trip to Epworth
Fire Station as part of their ‗People who help us‘
theme last term. The Fire Station Officers gave a tour of the station,
letting the girls try on their fire fighting uniforms and helmets.
The Firemen also gave the Rainbows important instructions about what to do if
they found a fire at home and how to ring for the Emergency services.
The girls were also able to explore the Fire Engine and all the equipment on board.
To finish the evening the Rainbows were allowed to try out fire fighting techniques with high
pressure water hoses.
A great visit was had by all and our thanks to the Fire Officers on duty who gave up their time to show us
round and make the evening fun and informative.
Haxey Rainbow Guides are part of the International Girl Guide Movement and from Rainbows, girls can
move up to Brownies and usually on to Guides.
We are actively looking for leaders to re-start the Epworth/Haxey Guide Units so that our enthusiastic
and rewarding Rainbows can continue to enjoy all that Girl Guiding can offer right through into their teens
and adulthood.
Could you give some time and energy to lead or help with our local Guide Unit?
It is great fun, very rewarding and there is lots of support and events for Leaders too. It just takes
someone to come forward to offer their time and energy to get a Guide group going again!

Traffic Lights
Dear Readers,
When approaching traffic lights, stop at or just before the stop line and then apply the hand brake and
select neutral. Never pull up to close behind other traffic at lights, leave yourself enough room and always
stop your vehicle so that you can see the rear tyres of the vehicle in front on the tarmac. By doing this
you‘re able to manoeuvre around them should they stall or breakdown and if an approaching emergency
vehicle wants to pass you will have the room to get out of the way,
At the lights, try to keep an eye on the lights controlling the other routes. As soon as they turn amber,
consider selecting first gear and prepare to release the handbrake as your lights should go to green in the
next few seconds.
If you can‘t see the other lights, look for signs of the traffic slowing as their lights go to red. Use this
anticipation to your advantage but never move off before your lights turn green. This advanced
observation at traffic lights can speed up your progress. Look ahead and if there are several lanes choose
the lane of least ‗resistance‘- the one with less traffic in it or the one without the slow- moving lorry or
bus. Often the inside lane is empty which not only gives you a clear run, but also means you won‘t get
held up by other traffic that will have to stop to turn right.
Observe the traffic you can see beyond the lights. Often lanes will merge.
Aim for the lane that lets you make the best
progress.
Time your arrival at traffic lights when they are
green. If you see a red light ahead, lift off the
accelerator to delay your arrival instead of
‗steaming‘ up to the light and having to brake firmly
and change gears.
Always be aware of drivers running red lights, also
keep an eye out for the peddle cyclist who ignores
the red as this trait is increasingly common on
today‘s crowded roads.
Making well- timed intelligent and planned progress
on busy roads is a uniquely satisfying experience-
especially when you slip effortlessly pass the high-
revving, push-in-at-any-cost driver who rocketed by
you moments earlier only to end up in the wrong
lane at the traffic lights.
