This is a tricky contest, however, with Yaakooum and MOUNT LOGAN also expected to improve on good debut efforts, especially the latter. Having cost 135,000 euros, Luca Cumani’s colt was very much the one to take out of a traditionally-strong 7f Newbury maiden as he flew home for fourth once the penny dropped and he will not only know much more about the game now, but he will relish this extra furlong as well. Another who looked very green first time out is Gold Trail and Charlie Appleby’s half-brother to Group 1 winner Zafisio can prove that performance all wrong today. HAYDOCK - RACE 2 - 14.30 (UK)

SELECTION 1: PARADISE WATCH (6)SELECTION 2: INVESTMENT EXPERT (10)SELECTION 3: WELLINGROVE (12)

Handicap debutant PARADISE WATCH shades the verdict in what looks a fiercely competitive event. Progressive in his maidens, the Royal Applause gelding showed no signs of stop-ping when striking over 7f at Salisbury (runner-up has won since) and an opening mark of 80 could underestimate his tal-ents. Ryan Moore has seemingly decided to get off last-time-out Epsom scorer Lunar Deity to partner the less exposed Investment Expert, so Jeremy Noseda’s charge is most feared ahead of the top weight and Hamilton winner Wellingrove.

SELECTION 1: GOLD CLUB (2)SELECTION 2: ROGUE WAVE (4)SELECTION 3: BRIAN NOBLE (1)

GOLD CLUB stepped up on his Wolverhampton debut fifth when runner-up over this C&D and, with further improvement on the cards, he could make it third time lucky. Rogue Wave is clearly held in high regard, contesting two valuable pots either side of finishing second here, and he’s put forward as the big-gest danger ahead of Dr Marwan Koukash’s two newcomers, Brian Noble and Our Red Devil. Both are bred to have ability, however, so any strong market move for either of them would be hard to ignore.

HAYDOCK - RACE 4 - 15.35 (UK)

SELECTION 1: FENNELL BAY (1)SELECTION 2: VENUE (3)SELECTION 3: MANKINI (2)

Venue and Mankini are both progressing at a rate of knots and arrive here with rock-solid claims, but FENNELL BAY looks the safer option. He has bags more experience under his belt than the aforementioned duo and produced a career best per-formance when a neck second in a valuable handicap at Sandown last Saturday. He will almost certainly go from the front end, making it a real test, and could take some pegging back with masterful front-running pilot Joe Fanning in the plate.

SET THE TREND is taken to repeat his victory in this contest 12 months ago. He drops into class 3 company for the first time since landing a similar conditions event over C&D in July and his overall record at the Merseyside venue is impressive (form figures read 2,1,1). With a top-rating of 106, Firebeam is best treated at these weights, but his two performances this year at Meydan inspire little confidence and the one who is most feared is Instransigent, who has been knocking hard on the door for months.

HAYDOCK - RACE 6 - 16.40 (UK)

SELECTION 1: EUSTON SQUARE (5)SELECTION 2: CLARION CALL (3)SELECTION 3: SPANISH PLUME (4)

Clarion Call looks to have plenty going for him on his return to Flat duty, having finished runner-up over hurdles at Cartmel 12 days ago and he has top amateur jockey Simon Walker in the plate, but EUSTON SQUARE edges the vote. The seven-year-old appeared to benefit from the application of a visor (worn again today) when readily landing a similar contest to this over 1m2f at Ripon and he also has a talented rider on top in Jamie Hamilton. Other last-time-out winners Spanish Plume and Automotive warrant respect, while the top-rated Hyperline cannot be ruled out either.
