The Gospel of Mark
Celebrate the Great
Christian Hymn and Song Writers tarting on Sunday, November 10, I will begin preaching a short series of three biographical sermons about
some of the great writers of Christian hymns and songs. I hope you will attend all three worship services
in which we give special focus to our music.
Biographical sermons weave the story of one person’s life with various scriptures that show how God
has created and developed that person into a great leader who has influenced other Christians in a major way. In
this particular series, I decided to focus on three men or women who wrote hymns and songs which actually
appear in our 2008 Baptist Hymnal. With help from Ken Trammell (Thanks Ken!), I narrowed the possible
featured song-writers to four: Fanny Crosby, William Reynolds, Isaac Watts, and Chris Tomlin. I have ordered
biographies of each of the four people and have started reading.
So far the only decision I have made is to start with Fanny Crosby. She experienced a terrible tragedy
while only a few weeks old—she was blinded for life by an illness and the misguided application of a poultice
to her young eyes by a quack “doctor.” Rather than allow that disaster to define her life, she eagerly accepted all
the teaching that her family members and school teachers offered, and discovered that she had a gift with words.
She memorized large sections of holy scripture and other great writings. Then she began to write poetry of her
own. Eventually she connected with Christian musicians who connected her lyrics to their musical tunes, and
Christian hymns began to emerge. “To God Be the Glory,” “Redeemed, How I Love to Proclaim It,” and
“Blessed Assurance,” are all favorite hymns in our hymnal that were written by this “poor little blind girl.”
Join me in worshipping the next three Sundays and especially in singing the songs and hymns written by
these great Christian writers.
In Christ,
Pastor Mark
P.S. To find out which two other song writers I choose you will need to come to worship and find out!

DEACONS BENCH
Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s
will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
he Bible tells us we should be we should be
prayerful and to give thanks to God on all
occasions. Prayers of thanksgiving are
proclaimed throughout the Bible. In 1 Chronicles
16:7-36, we are shown through “David’s Song of
Praise,” an excellent example of four elements that
are included in true thanksgiving.
1) Remembering what God has done for us.
2) Telling others about it.
3) Showing Gods glory to others.
4) Offering gifts of our self, our time, and our
resources.
Of the 150 psalms that David wrote, 73 of
them are of thanksgiving. This collection of prayers
and songs express the heartfelt feelings from deep
within David’s soul. In them we can read prayers of
thanks for: answered prayers, deliverance from
difficulties God’s greatness, his protection, his
enduring mercy, and his never ending love. God
provides all of those things for us still today.
Prayers of giving thanks are important, as
we all have reason to be thankful. In fact we are
reminded to “keep on praying no matter what
happens, always be thankful for this is God’s will”
1 Thessalonians 5:18.
You will be enriched in every way, so that
you can be generous on every occasion, and
through your generosity it will result in
thanksgiving to God. This service of giving that you
perform is not only applying to the needs of the
Lords people but is also overflowing in many
expressions of thanks to God. Because of the service
by witch you have proved yourselves, others will
praise God for the obedience that accompanies
your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your
generosity in sharing with them and everyone else.
And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out
to you because of the surpassing grace God has
given you. Thanks be to God for his indescribable
gift! 2 Corinthians 9:11-15
Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all
circumstances for this is Gods will for you in Christ
Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
We can be thankful for who God is and for
the opportunity He gives us to turn to Him in all
situations, good and bad. God is always there for us.
Our sincere prayers let Him know that we are
thankful for that. Prayers of thanksgiving should be
a continuous part of our everyday lives. Psalm 100
is a vow of thanksgiving. It says, Shout with joy to
the Lord, all the earth! Worship the Lord with
gladness; Come before Him, singing with joy.
Acknowledge that the Lord is god! He made us, and
we are his. We are his people, the sheep of his
pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into
his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and bless
his name. For the Lord is good. His unfailing love
continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to
each generation.”
I wish you all a safe and happy
Thanksgiving.
Yours in Christ,
Claude.

THE YOUTH COMMITTEE
ovember has arrived and the holidays are
quickly approaching. Due to scheduling
conflicts, the youth outing to Cox Farm has
been rescheduled for Saturday evening, November
2. Immediately following, we will head to Wal-
Mart and purchase items for Operation Christmas
Child shoeboxes. Later in the month, the youth will
be enjoying their annual Friends-giving dinner, held
during Ignite on Sunday, November 24. Each youth
is responsible for bringing their favorite
Thanksgiving dish to share. It is always a fun time
gathering together and celebrating all we have to be
thankful for. Plans are also in the works for a
Christmas Party tentatively scheduled for the
evening of Saturday, December 7, at the home of
Vicki and Keenan Bayol. Lastly, another plea from
the Youth Committee: We are still looking for
volunteers for our committee who can assist with
Ignite and help with the planning and chaperoning
of events. Prayerfully consider giving of your time
and talents. Our youth love variety!
Karen Frazier,
Youth Committee Chairperson
aymarket Day was a great event and our
church looked wonderful. Thank you Vicki
Bayol and Danielle Ginn for volunteering
your time to decorate children’s faces during
Haymarket Day! The children (and adults…..there
were a few adults in line for themselves I might
add) looked so adorable with their faces painted.
The best part was that the children weren’t even
fazed by the long line and waited so patiently to
debut their artwork. You ladies are wonderful; it
sure was a true testament to ways we are blessing
and outreaching in our community; Thank you.
The children had a lesson pertaining to
grandparents a few Sundays ago and while they
were learning about the lesson they were decorating
pumpkins. Initially the children thought they would
be taking their newly decorated pumpkins home but
were pleasantly surprised when they found out we
were taking the pumpkins on a field trip to give to
the residents at Heritage Village Nursing Home.
On Sunday, October the 20th
, after church
service, the children headed out in the rain to spread
some sunshine to the residents of the Memory Care
Floor at the nursing home. The children were
AMAZING with the residents and those seniors just
LOVED every minute with the children. The
children talked with the folks and even sang them a
song. It was priceless. And, the best part is, they
want to go back and do that again – so we will plan
an impromptu outing to sing Christmas Carols one
Sunday after church next month! What passionate
children we have in our congregation.
I will admit, with all of the fall festivities,
costume parties, Thanksgiving parties, trips to visit
family, Christmas festivities, school parties and
plays, etc, we purposely have not planned any
events for the fall season. With everything the next
three months hold for individual families, we did
not want to add to the stress and hustle and bustle of
the season. But don’t worry – we’ll make up for it
come January.

ear Church Family,
We are beginning our month of
Thanksgiving- our character trait for the
month of November and one of our favorite
holidays! October was so very busy and fun for our
staff and students! Back to School Night was well
attended and we sold 927 books to our families!
Amazing! Our families also bought some books for
our Jamaican preschool! We had a wonderful day
at Haymarket Day, with our "Down on the Farm"
float. Our Kindergarten students rode the float, and
our little choir sang "Apple Red Happiness" as we
rolled along Washington Street. Our Chick-fil-A
spirit night is always a big success each October.
Money earned benefits our sister school in Jamaica.
We also offered free speech screenings this past
month. The firefighters came to visit this month-
Fire Prevention Month in full swing. Parents
spoiled our firefighters with goodies to take back to
the station. Finally, Harvest Hoedown is coming on
October 31 and November. We're ready to ride the
ponies, find a pumpkin, try a root beer float and
play games in the rodeo! It is the highlight of the
year for many students!
November brings us to Thanksgiving
festivities- like Bread Share and Thanksgiving
Program in the 4's. A “Fingerful Feast” is held in
the Kindergarten, “Friendship Fruit Salad” in the 3
year old classes and a special snack in the 2's class.
We also host Parent-Teacher Conferences this
month, and all of our 4 year old classes participate
with Operation Christmas Child. You should come
see between 150-175 boxes on the altar Monday,
November 18! Our 2 and 3 year old students will
be bringing in canned goods for your Thanksgiving
Baskets during this month, too.
Our students are all settled in, eagerly
learning ABC's, 123's and more and more about
God's word through music, story time, prayer,
memory verse work and chapel times. One mom
told me that her daughter is helping out so much
around the house because she wants to keep being
in the 'Honor Club'... so cute!
I am so very thankful for our team of
teachers and support staff. We truly are a blessed
group of ladies serving the community and each
other in our school each day. We have a supportive
council, who makes sure we get all the training we
need, all the supplies we need and always helping to
make a cohesive environment for all. I am very
thankful for Pastor Mark- for the devotions and
chapels he shares with our staff and students. He is
always encouraging our teachers, and telling them
what a remarkable job they do-- it's such a positive
impact on the teachers- a real boost- so thank you!
Thank you to Ann for always being so kind and
helpful and to Mr. Bobby for his welcoming, happy
demeanor with everyone at the school. We are
certainly blessed at HBCPK!!
I hope you all have a wonderful month of
November- enjoying the fall, cool weather, crisp
apples, changing leaves and celebrating
Thanksgiving! Thanks for supporting your
preschool,
With Love,
Mrs. Laurie Frasz, Director HBCPK
ur Greeters provide a warm welcome and
smiles to all those who enter the doors of
our church. Yet, every church member is a
host to our guests. Whether it is in the parking lot,
the hallway, the Sanctuary or the Fellowship Hall,
the most important person for a guest to talk to in
order to feel at home here is YOU! Help our Greeter
Team make Haymarket Baptist Church the most
welcoming church in the area. See someone you do
not know – introduce yourself, learn their name, and
let them know you are glad they came to worship
here.

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY
FELLOWSHIP OUTING
n Monday, November 18, we will be
headed off to: Uncle Julio’s Mexican
Restaurant, located at:
13920 Promenade Commons Street, Gainesville.
For a time of fun and fellowship Uncle
Julio's is the perfect place to have sizzling mesquite
grilled fajitas and the one of a kind, chocolate
piñata. Call it fresh made memories as the hammer
falls on a ball of decadent dark chocolate filled with
homemade churros, fresh pineapple and berries
served with raspberry, chocolate and caramel sauces
and homemade whipped cream. Hmmm! Is anyone
up for some soup, nachos, quesadillas, tacos, or
fajitas?
Come join us, and let the fun and fellowship
begin.
Jan Waxvik
WBS Fellowship Coordinator
WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY
omen’s Bible Study continues on
Mondays at 9:30 a.m. We are now
starting the study of Esther, which is
going to be an interesting study. Esther and her
cousin, Mordecai were Jews “hidden”” in the
Persian capital because God had a very special work
for them to do. They were part of a remnant of Jews
who had remained in Persia after being in captivity.
Esther becomes the Queen of Persia and Mordecai
has a position of honor at the King’s gate. God has a
plan! Come and see the outcome!!
Our group enjoyed a very special, fun- filled outing
to The Tea Cart in Berryville. Those of us who
never wear hats, sure had fun finding just the right
one to wear for tea! Laughter was the ingredient of
the day.
Studying God’s word together has brought
us into a blessed fellowship and the fun times we
share once a month also strengthens that bond.
There is room for you. Come and join us!
Blessings from Bernie
Women’s Bible Study Leader
