On a Saturday afternoon that felt more like midsummer than early fall, the Emiry’s, David and Jackie, once again opened up their farm for a “Fun Day”, with horse rides around the property, games for kids, and all kinds of snacks and treats for kids and adults alike.
They were raising money for the Lighthaven Retirement Home based in nearby Bruce Mines. In addition to collecting donations there were also many items up for silent auction, including maple syrup related items, artwork and much more. In total approximately $1600 were raised over the after-noon.
You may recall they have raised money for Lighthaven in the past. Lighthaven charges a lower month-ly fee than almost any retirement home in Ontario, but because it turns no one away, regardless of ability to pay, a deficit is created and there is a need for donations.

well as those who have no place to live at all due to poverty or not having any family.
Jackie, along with her 16 year old horses Mac and Sue, took visitors on a much more leisurely and smooth hay ride, compared to the sleigh rides in the winter. We can’t help thinking there is an opportunity for someone to offer horse tours around the Island, as we all see the horses at the various farms and hobby farms. Just an idea?

Mildred “Millie” Jacobs Troyer 1924 - 2019

It is with joy and sadness that we wanted to let you know that Millie Jacobs Troyer, the beloved founder of All Tribes Christian Camp, passed into glory on Sep-tember 25, 2019. We rejoice in knowing that she is now free of pain and in the loving arms of her Saviour.
Millie was well loved among her many friends and family both in Indiana, and on St. Joseph Island. She was known for her faith, her can-do spirit and her love for the outdoors. Millie was born and raised in Indiana. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Saviour at the age of fourteen during a church service in 1938. Ever since she was young, Millie was always interested in nature, sports and camping. In 1947, when Millie was a college junior she was offered a summer job at Gaberd-iel’s Tourist Camp.
Gaberdiel’s Tourist Camp was located on Peter-son’s Island near Bruce Mines and it was during that summer that Millie was introduced to St. Joseph Island. Her purpose for going to the Island was to buy fresh fruits and vegetables as well as to attend evening camp meeting services sponsored by the St. Joseph Island Free Methodist Church.
IntheSpringof1963,afterfinishingherMas-ters at Indiana University, Millie decided to take a sabbatical and wound up back on St. Joseph Island. She rented a small cabin from Bernt and Rose Gilbertson on what is now the All Tribes Christian Camp proper-ty. Because Millie agreed to teach the Young People’s Sunday School class and meet with the youth on Friday nights, she was able to live in the cabin rent free. At first,Millieplannedtobeinthatlittlecabinforonlyone year, but the Lord had a different plan! During that year, Millie decided to purchase the property from the Gilbertsons and eventually she became the proud owner of one hundred acres of paradise. This purchase would

ThefirstweekofVacationBibleSchoolwasheld at All Tribes in the summer of 1963. In the Spring of 1966, Millie had paid off the property loan and decided that 1967 would be the year that she would build her new home on the property - a log cabin. It seemed like a great year to do such a project as Canada was celebrating its 100th birthday. Millie, withthehelpofmany,finishedthecabinintimetoentertain people for Christmas that year.
In the years that followed, Millie still worked at Indiana Wesleyan University and traveled back and forth to the Island. On May 19, 1978 Millie married Richard Troyer (Dick) and the two became co-managers of All Tribes Christian Camp.
Millie continued managing the Camp after Dick’s death in 1999, and then in 2001, Millie retired back to Indiana where she was Indiana Wesleyan University’s chief cheerleader. Millie continued to sit on the Camp’s Board of Directors and was actively involved throughout the camp season. She regularly hosted friends, old and new, at her cabin for a visit, a tour of her incredible antique collection, and some-times even a mug of apple cider! The legacy and impact that she has left will continue to be felt for decades to come in each of our lives and in the lives of the thousands of campers that she invested in. Her presence and cheerful smile will be deeply missed here at All Tribes Christian Camp and at her home at Indiana Wesleyan University.

Merlin
No, not the wizard. Merlins are small falcons that were once also known as pigeon hawks because in flight they can somewhat resemble a pigeon. They are fierce hunters and use their powerful flying to bring down songbirds. They are relatively brave, sometimes known for trying to “catch” cars and trains, and will even take on birds caught in nets set out by ornithologists for study. They will tag along with other larger raptors and snag the birds that were flushed out in the ambush by the larger birds.
They were popular falconry birds in medieval times, they were known as “lady hawks” because noblewomen such as Catherine the Great and Mary Queen of Scots used them to hunt. Their diet consists mostly of birds, which their speed and agility allows them to take down their prey in mid-air attacks. They are bold hunters and will nab pigeons and ducks that are the same size as themselves, as well as insects, small mammals and reptiles.
Great horned owls, larger falcons and larger hawks can prey upon the merlin, but because merlins are so agile in flight and aggressive, they tend to avoid them, and merlins will even chase larger raptors out of their territory making their aggressiveness one of their defining qualities.

September is over! The museum saw many visitors over the month and they were grateful we were open into the fall. Speaking of fall even though it’s not far into the season it is marching along swiftly, leaves are changing colour, rain and cooler temps, mean it is time for the museum to close. The St. Joseph Island Museum is now closed to the public for the season. I’ll be moving onto winterizing the buildings for their long winter slumber.
As noted in a column a few weeks back, a change was made to our ‘members only’ draw. In the past we drew the winners at Harvestfest (labour day weekend), with the change of extending our sea-son for the month of September (a few years back) it made more sense to do the draw at the end of the season. So that is what we did this year. The draw was planned to take place at the Museum Board meeting September 30th but due to unfore-seen circumstances this meeting has been post-poned to a yet to be determined date.
Without making members wait until our meeting it was decided to conduct the draw at the St. Jo-sephTownshipOffice.
Here are this year’s winners:
First Prize-$500-generously donated by the Mat-thews Family-WINNER-Natasha Nevin
Second Prize-$300-generously donated by Algoma Insurance Brokers-Harold Daynard
Third Prize-Diamond Ring-generously donated by Northern Jewellery and Crafts-WINNER-William White
It is also time to announce the winner of our season long ‘Guess the Artifact’ contest as well as reveal what the artifact was. The artifact chosen this year was quite the challenge, it was a sugar auger, which was used to break up sugar that was shipped and stored in wooden barrels. The most common answers were an implement used for ice or hay. There were a couple of guesses that said it was a cheese or butter auger, they were getting close with food related guesses. In the end there was only one correct guess and that was made by Tom Murdock. He is the winner of a $40 gift card generously donated by Hess Jewellers. Congratu-lations to all of our winners!

kept inside for 3+ weeks. Friendly but not complete-ly tame yet as they still tend to hide. Adventurous and shy but love to purr. Eating well and growing
up quickly. They are sweet but still need some work to become fully socialized.
Individual personalities developing and can be dis-cussed prior to taking ownership of them.
