JAMSHEDPUR JESUITS02 September, 2015

On 15 August, on the feast of the th

Assumption and 69 Independence

Day of India, four Jesuits: Frs. Jaya

Prakash D'Souza, Sylvester Ekka,

Sylverius Lugun and Isidore Minj

made their final commitment of

their lives to God and to the people

o f G o d , a t L o y o l a S c h o o l ,

Jamshedpur. At the beginning of the

Eucharistic celebration, the MC and

the l i turgy-coordinator, Fr R

Antonyraj, set the tone for the

ceremony as he gave thumbnail

accounts of the personality of the

Vowents and their claim to fame.

The Holy Eucharist was presided

over by the Provincial, Fr George

Fernandes, and concelebrated by

the Odisha Mission Superior, Fr.

Tony Raj, the Rector of Loyola

School, Fr. C. L. George and the four

Vowents. In his welcoming note, Fr.

Provincial welcomed the gathering

to join the triple celebration of the

day and prayed for the vowents for a

spirit of disposition like that of

Mother Mary, to work in the Lord's

vineyard. A good number of priests

and religious, faithful and parents

and relatives of the Vowents were

present to witness the vow-day

liturgical ceremony and to share in

the joy of the Vowents.

Recalling their many years of their

religious journey before being

incorporated into the Society of

Jesus, the vowents counted God's

blessings to pursue their vocation as

well as the sustained spiritual

support from our heavenly Mother

during the shared homily. These

graces have enabled them to unfold

t h e i r s p i r i t u a l d e p t h , s e l f -

knowledge, and importance of

fraternal guidance and to be

available for mission in the Lord's

vineyard for establ ishing His

Kingdom each in his own little way.

The ever melodious singing of the

choir made up of Novices provided a

prayerful atmosphere during the

liturgy. After the Eucharist, the

Vowents were felicitated in the

Loyola Community Hall in a grand

manner. In the beautifully arranged

Hall, sumptuous dinner provided by

the Minister, Br Amal, pleased and

satisfied everyone, matching well

with the vow-day grandeur. It was

indeed a memorable day in the

history of vow-day celebrations.

Our hearts were filled with great joy as Fr. Joshy and I witnessed the defence of Fr V. Arockia Das, on August 25. The Thesis, 'A study on the financial inclusion of public sector banks and its impact on the

Santhal tribe of Odisha' attracted a large number of keen audience. Fr. Arockia with his wit and intellectual caliber answered systematically every question raised by the examiners and from the floor. The defence was well appreciated, particularly for the concept, clarity and quality.

The hall resounded with the thunder of applause as the external examiner declared 'Dr. Arockia Das, S J s u c c e s s f u l ' . We l l d o n e ! Congratulations …Dr. Arockia Das, SJ!

Fr Panneer was in Chennai from 1-12 August , 2015 for budget meeting. In August, 12 patients were operated successfully by a team of three doctors and staff and four ulcer patients treated for a month in the hospital. The house

and hospital have 24x7 light with the installation of an inverter at each place. Life has become more easy and with a washing machine in the house and a water cooler in the theatre room, we can afford to say LG (Life is Good). Fr Gerard Rodricks, SJ, Secretary, JEPASA, and Fr. Cyril Tigga

thfrom Divya Bharti were overnight guests on 14 of

this month. Paneer and I joined the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation in Basahatu Parish on 15 August, administered by Bishop Most Rev. Felix Toppo, SJ.

I a m f i n e a n d h a p p y ! O u r foundational course is over now. We will soon be attending small thematic courses. During the weekend we are kept busy with

assignments. We have had pleasant weather in the month of July and August. Not much of rain, occasional clouds in the sky and cool weather and, warm when the sun is out. In the month of September there will be plenty of students in the

campus as it marks the end of the summer vacation and the start of another academic year.

The DNS, Bhuli had the

privilege of having three Vice-

Principals together for a short

period in the campus and then

came the quick transitions: Fr.

Jerome Sequeira moved to the

Provincial Curia in Jamshedpur,

Fr. Augustine Surin went to Sri

Lanka for h i s Ter t iansh ip

( ' A c c h h e D i n ' ) . A f te r t h e

overpowering presence of the

two predecessors, Fr. Vinod

Fernandes, breathed a sigh of

relief on the departure of the

two. The Provincial, Fr. George

Fernandes, was with us for the

Annual Visitation, and it was a

time of grace and for community

sharing. We had a common

meeting at the main Jesuit

community, Digwadih where

the Provincial summed up the

highlights and fruits of his

Visitation.

School: Khusi Priya, an eighth

standard student, secured a

bronze at the Inter-Nobilian English Elocution

Contest conducted at DNS, Mugma. Fifty

students of Classes 8 and 9 got into farmer's

shoes and felt what it means to do some back

breaking work for a day, participating in

paddy transplantation under the guidance of

Fr. Jerome Sequeira and half a dozen

teachers. The school celebrated St. Ignatius

Feast with great joy and excitement with

cultural programs and inter-school football

matches.

Independence Day was celebrated with a

great sense of gratitude to the freedom

fighters. The Principal, Fr. Victor Misquith

honoured the nation by hoisting the Tri-

Colour. The children celebrated the beauty of

freedom through songs and dances. During

the vote of thanks, Fr. Vinod SJ, paid tribute to

the freedom fighters, and at the same time,

invited the staff and students to live

meaningfully the freedom received 68 years

ago.

DNS, Sijua-Koradih: Our collaborators

organized the Novena prayer services during

the assembly as a meaningful preparation for

the feat of St. Ignatius. It was the first time in

the history of the school, prayer

services were conducted on

Ignatian themes. This event

gave the taste of Ignatian

spirituality to all staff and

celebrated in the school on 30

July with a cultural program. A

joint meeting for the staff of the

Junior and Senior School was

organized for conducting first

semester exams smoothly.

There was also a colourful

Independence Day celebration

at Sijua based on patriotic

themes. Fr Sushi l Suman

hoisted the National Flag and

the Principal, Ms. Tanushree,

gave a meaningful message for

the occasion. The staff and

students were in shock and tears

when Jesaen Alam of Standard

on 22 August. We reach out a

hand in sympathy to the family

in their great moment of grief.

DNS, Bhuli Fr. Vinod FernandesA TASTE OF IGNATIAN SPIRUALITY

July and August were the months of blessings and celebrations at DNC. The meaningful Eucharistic celebrations during the novena days, creative colorful decoration of the house, hundreds of well-wishes on St Ignatius feast and presence of Most Rev. Anil J.T Couto, Archbishop of Delhi, Most.

Rev. Thomas Dabre Bishop of Poona, Rev. Fr. George Pattery SJ, POSA made us rejoice greatly and experience spiritual joy. We had

th threcollection on 7 and 8 , guided by Fr. Francis Gonsalves, SJ, and on the same day Deacon Niral Deogam SJ, celebrated his

thbirthday too. In addition, on the 13 , all Central Zone priests and scholastics came together for the Eucharistic celebration.

These activities did not spare us from daily academic schedule: while the theologians were busy with their mid-term exam, philosophers were busy like bees in understanding and integrating Psychology and Philosophy.

surprised to know that at 75+ young, I drove the 'Quanto-C-2' to and from Jammu – over 840 km in two days!

The feast of our Founder Father stIgnatius was celebrated on 31

July with a solemn Mass. This year Fr. Emile Coelho was the main celebrant and all the other priests concelebrated. After breakfast the novices had a football match. It certainly helped us to do justice to the

thfeast day lunch. On 7 August, Fr. Antony Raj preached the First Friday Recollection to the novices on the theme “Jesus the Compassionate One, whose heart is full of compassion for

thus”. On 9 August the novices and the community members

joined Fr. Master in the Eucharist ic celebration, thanking the Lord for the gift of life he received. We celebrated the 69th

t hIndependence Day on 15 August. Fr. Sylverius Lugun, from Loyola Bhubaneswar, hoisted the National Flag. Second year novice, Anjum Lomga, delivered a powerful speech in English, while First year novice Rasty Lakra, delivered one in Hindi. In the evening we all were in Loyola School witnessing the final profession of Frs. Isidore, Jayaprakash, Sylverius and Sylvester. The soulful singing of our novices for the solemn liturgy was well received and appreciated. On

nd22 August we joined the MC Sisters and the inmates of Nirmal Hriday to celebrate the Foundation Day of the Missionaries of

Charity, where Bishop Felix Toppo was the main celebrant. The Novices joined the inmates in their singing and in playing musical instruments. After a delicious feast day lunch and dance, novices returned to Jesu Bhavan. Fr. Fabian is directing a Long Retreat for two sisters here at Upasana. Fr. Emile offered an English Speaking course to B. Ed Students in Tirunelveli and, on his return, left for Jharna, Namkum to preach a retreat.

The Chief Guest, Mr Mithun Mukkerjee, gave an inspirational speech to the school children. The local school children and guardians got an opportunity to witness a two-hour long cultural program, including the School March Past. At the end, the locals returned home with words of appreciation having tasted the sweetness of real freedom with memories of

songs and dances that were fine tuned for the occasion. It was a big day for the community too. Fr Sylvester made his Final Commitment in the Society of Jesus. Fr. S Tony Raj was on wheels, on an untiring mission for the entire month, battling constant cough and cold. Besides his scheduled contact visits, he was in TRTC inspiring our Province Pastors how to make their parishes more vibrant and people-centred. In the second half of

the month he made back and forth visits between Bhubaneswar and Jamshedpur for attending various formal meetings. Fr. Charlie Pereira was busy with OJS audit, facing several technical glitches of modern technology. However, he made himself ready

thfor the second Income Tax hearing on the 26 of month. Fr. George Anthony directed two retreats for the SSCC Novices in Loyola

Bhavan from 2-14 of August, and, on Independence Day, went to Padanpur for the Spiritual Direction of the 24 Seminarians, followed by the end of the month visit to Kendrapara and Sankabhanga with Fr. Gilbert Menezes

We were honored and felt our pulses rushing at break neck speed when the staff and students felicitated us on the feast of St. Ignatius. On this occasion Fr Sanjay presented a brief life history of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Sch. Ranjit organized an

exchange program for the students of JYOTI Club, Jamshedpur in Lupuguttu. They conducted a Grand Quiz Competition for the

th thstudents of 7 and 8 Class of our school and inspired them to excel in their intellectual growth. On Independence Day, the Chief Guest, Fr. Ajit Soreng, after hoisting the National Flag, gave an inspiring patriotic

speech focusing on the issues that affected common people. The thrill and excitement of the students in the campus came to a standstill as the students were gripped with the fever of first terminal exams.

step into the former flats meant

for Loyola Staff were out-going

Provincial, Fr. James Kalapura,

in-coming Socius, Fr. Eric Cassel

and Province Treasurer, Fr. Alex

Mascarenhas. A week later they

were jo ined by out-going

Superior of XIMB, Fr. Augustine

Ezhakunnel and B. Ed- LCE-

bound, Fr. Anselem Dungdung.

For the first month this place on

Straight Mile Road, served only

as the Provincial's Curia's Office

and Residence since they still

had to arrange their own kitchen

and, like day scholars, they

j o i n e d t h e L o y o l a J e s u i t

Community for all their meals.

8 years have since passed, and in

that space of time, Provincial Fr.

Mike T Raj finished his tenure

with Provincial Fr. George

Fernandes succeeding him. Superiors have

come and gone – the first one being Fr. Gus

Ezha, to be followed by Frs. Jerry Cutinha, Joe

Surin and, currently, Walter Kongari, who is

now away in the US as Province Development

Director. As Ministers we have seen Bro. Tony

Stevens and we have now the end of a long

innings of Fr. James Bara, who has been

hospitality personified over the past 4 years

whose small kitchen but large heart has never

disappointed a single guest.

Come September, the scenario has changed

with Loyola Niwas downing the shutters to

guests but continuing to house the offices of

the Provincial.

----RISES OVER FATHER GUIDERA

RESIDENCE, XLRI CAMPUS

It's true. Gone are the sounds of traffic from

dawn to midnight, not a trace of factory soot,

and instead, we are blessed with an

environment that is lush green. There's a

world of difference! When we leave the office

in the evening, we leave the office behind us.

It makes us hopefully pray and work better.

The Provincial, Fr. George Fernandes, as

usual, had his work cut out

between Annual Visitations and,

and with the annual audit in the

air, any number of AGM's to

attend. The Province Treasurer,

Fr. K. M. Joseph, did another

superb presentation of the JJS

Audit Accounts and at the

appropriate time brought in the

auditors to take questions from

the Board Members. As the local

Superior, he has a delicate task

to handle this aging community

with velvet gloves and a honey-

dipped tongue. Yes, there was

one time when he spent two

hours just paring the toe nails of

Fr. Richie Kenna! It doesn't get

easy when the toe nails aren't

done for years! When it comes

to working on the computer –

preparing reports- setting the

layout of the Jamshedpur

Jesuits, we now know we can

depend on Fr. Jerome Sequeira.

Rev. Robert J. Dullahan, S.J.,

known simply as "Rocky" to his

many Jesuit brothers and

friends, died on August 11, 2015

priest for 58 years. A native of

Floral Park, New York, Fr.

Dullahan was an alumnus of

Xavier High School in New York

City and entered the Society of

Jesus at the Novitiate of St. Isaac

J o g u e s i n W e r n e r s v i l l e ,

Pennsylvania. He received his

bachelor's degree from West

Baden College in West Baden

Springs, Indiana, and went on to

receive his Masters in Theology

at De Nobili College in Poona,

India. He also studied Hindi at

t h e p re st i g i o u s A l l a h b a d

University in India. He was

ordained on March 24, 1957 at

De Nobili College. Fr. Dullahan spent the first

twenty years of his priesthood teaching

English and religion in India, first at St.

Xavier's School in Chaibasa and later at Loyola

School in Jamshedpur. We the Jesuits of

Jamshedpur pay tribute to our brother,

recalling Rocky moments in Jamshedpur for

more than two decades, as narrated to Fr.

Eric Cassel by Fr. Frank McGauley.

In this tribute to Rocky Dullahan, it would

help to get a better picture of the man who

came from the US in the third batch of Jesuits

to work in Jamshedpur. The story doing the

rounds in the late 60's spoke of one who was

nervous in the service – the time when he was

driving back the Land Rover from an early

Mass in one of the nearby convents. As he

turned to drive into Loyola, there was

another riding out on a Lamby. So hot and

bothered did he get that, instead of pressing

the brake pedal, he pressed the accelerator

and took the gate off the hook. That was first

and only time that Rocky was allowed to drive

a four-wheeler!

The other incident is when the Jesuits had

moved from the Pink Bungalow in Circuit

House and were residing on the first floor of

the school. The Jesuit Mission Superior, Fr.

Fasy, had his office in the corner overlooking

Beldih Club. The story goes that Rocky went

to see Fr. Fasy and was thoroughly upset after

meeting Fr. Fasy. Rocky turned around,

stomped out of the room, and, shot the bolt

through the door, locking Fr. Fasy in. Those

were days when we didn't have intercom and

Fasy had to wait for the lunch break to come

out. To make a long story short, Fr. Rocky

Dullahan was out of Loyola and on the next

bus to Bandgaon! Such was the

quality of obedience in those

early days. While Rocky was at

LPG, the status was made.

Everyone at LPG was given a

status except Rocky. Rocky

ruminated and remarked “If I

was the problem, it would have

been easier just to shift me out”,

said a bewildered Rocky. When

LPG school was having a football

match, one would see Rocky

pacing up and down the football

field, yelling out sarcastically

“AUR UPAR MARO” since our

kids had a penchant of shooting

over the bar instead of right into

the net! Rocky was well known

for his absent-mindedness in De

Nobili School, FRI. When a

search was on since he had not

gone to his class scheduled at

that hour, someone shouted

“Try the toilet!” Sure enough he

was in one of those toilets,

grading answer scripts while on

the toilet seat and forgetting to

bolt the door from the inside. It

was a shock both for the one

who found him in the toilet, not

expecting to find an unbolted

toilet door, and for Rocky to be

caught totally absorbed in paper

correction.

In 1976, he returned to the

States and in 1986 hearing

another ca l l for miss ions

overseas, set off to Ghana and

touching lives and mending

OBITUARY

Rev. Robert J. Dullahan, S.J.Fr. Eric Cassel

Gone are the days when we had

to outsource the production of

the monthly newsletter and

Province Catalogue. Yet we

remain ever grateful to those

who helped JJS – Fr. Jerry

Cutinha for the Catalogue, Fr.

Vally Mendonca for putting

t o g e t h e r t h e m o n t h l y

newsletter for years together, and, only

recently, Fr. Alwyn Rodrigues for the issues of

June and July. Our Minister and Infirmarian,

Bro. Maxi Lakra treads a very delicate path as

he responds to the varying needs of our

senior Jesuits, taking them to the campus

doctor, or dr iv ing Fr. Eric Cassel to

Brahmananda for a monthly follow-up-check

on the Thigh-Hip-Replacement surgery. It's

the long wait of doing nothing–

waiting as long as 3 hours - that

is tiring! And when one sees the

way the famous six get along Ed

– Carl- Richie- KC – Manu - Eric –

or get in each one's way – you

just have to shake your head in

On the day of our Founder's Day celebration, we were re-charged by the inspiring homily of Fr. Mike T Raj, the Rector of VJ, in which he invited us to revisit Ignatius' charism. In the newly formed list of office bearers, Sch

Amos was appointed as Editor of Wachan Sudha and Sch Ritesh for spreading the aroma of Delhi cuisine as member of the kitchen team. Foreign-bound dignitaries, Frs. Joe Kalathil and Augustine, Schs. Neelam and Amit Lakra visited us in this month. We wish them all the best in their missions. Fr.

Mike T Raj flew to Pune for a Major Rectors Meeting. These days Mike can be seen behind the steering wheel of VJ's latest acquisition of a four-wheeler, familiarising himself with the ins and outs of the roads of Delhi.
