Access and EgressGServe Facilities Solutions staff will ensure safe access and egress is maintained for themselves and other contractors/members of the public in the area they are working in. Good standards of housekeeping will be maintained by all staff. Warning notices and barriers will be deployed as required. Debris will be cleared away on a regular basis and the site left clean and tidy at the end of a shift or task.Working at HeightFalls from height remain the single biggest cause of work-related death in the UK.Due to the nature of this work falls from height are an obvious and ever present risk. All employees have been made aware of the dangers and consequences of falling from height; therefore, all working at height will be properly planned, organised and supervised. Only competent members of staff will be allowed to work at height and it is the responsibility of the senior person to ensure conditions are safe before allowing any work at height to take place. The foreman/senior person will carry out a risk assessment before allowing work at height and put in place equipment and measures to prevent falls occurring. Where he/she cannot eliminate the risk of a fall, he/she will put in place measures and equipment to minimise the distance and consequences of a fall, should one occur.

Guidelines on Safe Operating ProceduresOperatives are trained and competent in ladder use; ladders will only be used without fall protection where the work is light and of short duration AND where the operative can complete his task by maintaining 3 points of contact on the ladder i.e. both feet and at least one hand.Ladders must be Class 1 or EN 131 Industrial grade and be in good condition, and located properly prior to use, i.e. the foot of the ladder should rest on a firm, level, non-slippery surface, and should be footed or tied on the stiles to prevent slipping. Proprietary stabilisers and other equipment could be used where there is a risk of ladders slipping, or if it is uneven ground. Ladder stand offs could be used where access to the roof is required, and the ladder will extend a minimum of 1.05 metres above the gutter. Ladders should be set at a base to height ratio of 1:4.Where required, scaffold will be provided and erected by a competent erector or an approved contractor; the hand rail will extend a minimum 0.95 metre above the working area and a mid rail max 0.47 metre gap will also be in place. The site foreman will ensure a handover certificate is received from the contractor prior to allowing access to the scaffold. During the works access to the scaffold will be via ladder, which will be tied off at the top, ladders will be removed or boarded off at the end of each shift to prevent unauthorised access.

Task Description

• Mark out designated working area using barriers where possible to restrict & redirect traffic and pedestrians.• Visual checks of MEWP’s to be completed daily and before the start of each working day using the plant inspection check list provided. Any malfunctions or defects must be reported to GServe management immediately. Do not proceed to use the machine.• Supervisor to check safety harnesses to ensure correct wear and that all PPE is being worn throughout installation.• Organise all tools and materials required for the works needed and ensure all are placed securely within the toolbox.

Installation

Corner Fixings

The tension of the wire suspension system and the weight of the net is carried by heavy

duty expanding bolts known as Netbolts. These are also used to support cross wires and

are used up to every 10m.

Netbolts are to be installed into a solid part of the structure which has been identified on

site as being the external brick wall.

For this project, it is advised that M6. 316 grade S/S Netbolts (NET029) be used.

A 10mm drill bit will be used to drill into the masonry to a depth of 50mm using a depth

spacer. This will ensure there is minimal risk of exposing any Asbestos.

Then insert the bolt and tighten the nut, which causes the shield to expand inside the

hole to provide a solid fixing.

Intermediate Fixings

To ensure the net will be tensioned and to distribute the weight intermediate fixings are required across the span lengths.

The installation of pre-agreed bird netting to Areas One, Two, Three, Four & Five situated above roadway 3, BBC Elstree Studios.

Page 12: HAZARDS IDENTIFIED · Web viewDaily visual checks will be carried out by the competent senior person on all the above items and defects reported immediately. Any equipment suspected

These should be installed every 0.5m.

Mark the area, pre-drill to a depth of 38mm and install a red wall plug with a screw eye

fixing.

For the supporting wire to be attached to the cabins we recommend a self-drill screw to

be used with an angle bracket.

Pre-mark at a distance of 0.5m at the top edge of the cabin, place the angle bracket over

the self-drill screw and secure using an electric drill.

Net Straining Wire and Accessories

A 2mm diameter galvanised straining wire is passed through the above fixings in which the net

can be attached.

• We advise that 2mm 7/7 (49 strand) 316 grade S/S Straining Wire (NET008) be used.

• This cable is then tensioned approximately every 10 m using M6 316 grade S/S Barrel Strainers

(NET016) which are attached to the Netbolts.

• The Wire is formed into loops for attachment to the netbolt or barrel strainer by using 2.5mm

Copper Ferrules (NET021) and a MK2 Ratchet Crimper (NET022) this will help to prevent

the straining wire from detaching away from the structure.

• Once the wire is tensioned the net can be positioned onto the supporting wire.

Netting

This project requires the 50mm “No-Flame” Bird Netting (NET251) be used.

• Attach the net to the straining wire using a P7 Hog Ringer (NET009) this holds P7 18mm S/S

Hog Rings (Net012)

• Each square of the net should be attached to the straining wire, for strength and to help

maintain the integrity of the netting.

• Trim any excess netting that is not needed and dispose.

Guano & Decontamination

Areas within this installation may mean that you could come across heavily contaminated

material in the form of guano. This should be treated where required to minimise human contact

during installation. Full PPE specifically respiratory masks must be worn during any treatment of

guano. Chemical must be diluted to correct ratio and decanted into sprayer bottle which must be

used to treat areas required. Please refer to enclosed COSHH data.

Additional Information:Site rules and regulations must be adhered to at all times and within guidelines set by Wates Management. If you are in any doubt, contact your line manager or helpdesk.
