ammonia bleach

Mixing equal amounts of bleach &ammonia will result in the formationof chlorine gas:

Do NOT, under ANY circumstances, try this at home!!

When a greater amount of bleach is added than ammonia thereaction is:

NH3 + 3 NaOCl 3 NaOH + NCl3

nitrogen trichloride

Nitrogen trichloride is a very toxic chemical & a volatile explosive!

When a greater amount of ammonia is added than bleach thethe reaction occurs in three steps:

NH3 + NaOCl NaOH + NH2Cl

NH3 + NH2Cl + NaOH N2H4 + NaCl + H2O

2 NH2Cl + N2H4 NH4Cl + N2

hydrazine (a component of rocket fuel)

The heat from the last reaction is so great that it usually leads toan explosion!
