Also, if they will need silverware and/or napkins, do not forget to pack them.∙Don’t forget to have water for your child at school, too. Helpful Hints
Quick Tip • The school day begins at 8:15 and students are marked tardy if they are not seated in the morning meeting location at that time. 3 tardies= 1 absence.
During the month of October, we will continue
learning all about apples and pumpkins! We will
make apple crafts, applesauce and learn poems
and songs about these yummy fruits and
vegetables. We will also learn about Johnny
Appleseed and discover how important he was to
the settlers heading west –some of the apples you
eat could be from orchards he helped to plant
over 200 years ago! To end our unit on apples,
we’ll learn why following a recipe is important and
each will get to help make applesauce by stirring
and mashing the ingredients in the crock-pot!

Also this month, we will be participating in a variety of
activities involving pumpkins, students will continue to
learn consonants and short vowels, new service words
and discovering different types of books. We will be
integrating learning activities with bats and spiders –
ahhhh, I love October!
Students enjoyed the opportunity to read with their
reading buddies at the library last month. This is a
wonderful activity and we loved spending time with
our buddies and listening to our favorite stories!
And a huge ‘thank-you’ for the positive and
successful Parent Workshop and conferences!! It is so
refreshing and encouraging to have the support of
such amazing parents. Thanks for making the time
and for all you do for your child/children – you are
simply the best!
Miss Kate’s Red Hot Apple
Sauce
10 – 12 chopped and pealed
apples (Golden Delicious are my
favorite for this)
1 package/cup Red Hots
1 cup unfiltered apple juice
Combine and cook 4 hours on
high heat in crock-pot (8 hours
on lower heat) stirring
occasionally. Serve warm with
cinnamon crisps or pair both with
vanilla ice cream, oh my!
Mr. Brian’s Cinnamon-Sugar
Tortilla Crisps
2 large flour tortillas
melted butter
cinnamon-sugar
Brush tortillas with melted butter
(of course, the more the better).
Sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar and
cut into 6-8 slices (a pizza cutter
works well). Bake on ungreased
cookie sheet at 350 until golden
brown and edges begin to curl
(approx. 8-10 min). Serve warm.
Store in airtight container. For a
lower-fat snack, spritz with water
rather than using butter.

October Dates Heritage StudiesLibrary
WHAT’S HAPPENING
Oct 3rd and 5th –Parent teacher conferences
October 6th – Field Trip
October 9th – Fall Break
October 19th – End of First Quarter
October 20th –Friday morning Club
The children have learned a lot of new things at the public library in Ignacio. They did a tour of how to find things in the library, listen to new stories, and made bookmarks. Several children got library cards to use at the library.
We will be doing map skills for heritage studies this month.
We have been busy this month
learning about the states of matter
(solids, liquids, and gases) . Children had a wonderful
learning experience by
making ice cream using half and half,
vanilla, ice, and rock salt. We did lots of shaking to see how a liquid changes into a
solid. The children got to enjoy their
experiment by eating it.
We have had a blast learning about geology, the rock cycle, minerals, soil, and fossils over the past few months! Our learning has been supplemented by some great hands-on experiences including making models of the layers of our earth using marshmallows, chocolate, and cherry sours, creating our own sedimentary rocks at home and at school, making metamorphic rocks out of taffy, digging in and analyzing soil samples, and creating fossilized gummy bears!
We are wrapping up our unit by working on identifying some of the amazing rocks that these boys have collected throughout the unit.

Welcome to Colorful Colorado!
As we leave September
behind and move on to
October, we will begin our
first unit in our new social
studies curriculum, The
Colorado Story. We will be
learning first about what
geography is and the tools
that geographers use to
study the land. Then we
will act as travel guides for
our wonderful state as we
begin a mini research
project to learn about the
different regions of
Colorado!
Treasure Falls Field Trip
We are so thankful for Bethany and Kelli from the San Luis Valley Watershed for meeting us at Treasure Falls and leading us in some great explorations that helped us learn more about how weathering and erosion affect the rock
cycle, as well as how soil is connected to the tocks we have been learning about. It was fun to see it all in real life!“Worthy are you, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by
your will they existed and were created.” Revelation 4:11
We have been doing some self-
evaluations to help identify how we
learn best. Whether we are
visual, auditory or kinesthetic
learners. Also, discovering which
of the Multiple Intelligences are
our strongest. We are then finding ways to use our
strengths to learn new information.
