“We fought hard,” Tivy coachDavid Jones said. “i wish itwould have been a little bitprettier, but it’s a win and we’lltake it. Our defense is playingreal well. We’ve got to get ourpassing game going a little bet-ter, and we will.”

Mcneil’s 49-yard touchdownrun just three plays into Tivy’sopening series and BradMitchell’s extra-point kickgave the Antlers an early 7-0lead, but Champion knotted the con-test at 7-7 just before the first quar-ter ended on a 23-yard touchdownpass from Poeske to AustinHumphrey and a Clayton HatfieldPAT kick.

Tivy pulled ahead 21-7 at halftimeon a pair of second quarter TDs.Stuckey capped a 90-yard Antlerdrive with an 11-yard scoring run atthe 7:28 mark, and Mcneil followedon the next series with a 12-yardtouchdown run that saw the senior

pile-drive over a swarm of tacklersfor the final six yards.

Champion fought back in thefourth quarter, driving 73 yards in 14plays. Michael Moloney’s dash atthe goal from three yards out cameup short when Moloney fumbled, but teammate Matt Morris scoopedup the ball and carried it into theendzone for the score. Hatfield’sPAT cut the Chargers’ shortfall to21-14 with 9:57 remaining.

Tivy answered with a seven-play,78-yard drive high-lighted by Stuckeyruns of 13 and 11yards before Mcneilfound Ahrens slant-ing over the middlefor a 16-yard touch-down strike with 6:17left to play. Tivy’slead stayed at 27-14after Mitchell’s extra-point kick sailedwide.

Gawryszewski’s interception ofPoeske 14 plays into Champion’sensuing series cut short a promisingCharger drive at the Tivy 23-yardline, and Tivy stopped Champion’sfinal possession at the Chargers’own 32 after Poeske missed on threeconsecutive incompletions.

Battle for the top

Though Tivy still has fourDistrict 27-4A games remain-ing, Friday’s matchup with

longtime rival Alamo Heights atAntler Stadium could very well deter-mine this year’s 27-4A champion.

The two teams’ currently sit tiedatop the district standings at 3-0,with Tivy already having faced —and beaten — top-tier teams BudaHays (31-10) and Boerne Champion(27-14), as well as posting a rain-soaked 34-13 win over SchertzClemens. Heights comes into thecontest after knocking off Champion(24-0) and Seguin (39-32) and blow-ing out Kyle Lehman 35-0 last week.

Heights quarterback Kalen Brock-well passed for one touchdown andran for a second against Lehman, continuing a season of strong show-

ings that have seen the senior throwfor 714 yards and eight touchdownsand rush for another 296 yards andfive scores. Brockwell likes to spreadhis passes around to a variety ofreceivers, though his favorite down-field target is senior Cole Bailey.Bailey’s 175 receiving yards and sixtouchdowns lead Heights’ wideouts, and junior Robert Schuler is closebehind with 14 catches for 168 yardsand two scores. Senior ChristianBeidenharn has also topped the 100-yard mark with 12 catches for 133yards and a touchdown.

Junior Byron Proctor leads theMules’ ground attack with 76 carriesfor 632 yards and six scores, includ-ing a 77-yarder in last week’s winagainst Lehman.

Heights, 5-1 overall, is averagingjust under 28 points per game offen-sively, a number almost exactly inline with Tivy’s point production, butthe Mules’ defense has given up just11.5 points per contest compared tothe Antlers’ 25. Heights has a pair of

district shutouts against Championand Lehman.

Unlike Tivy, Heights’ pre-districtschedule did not include Class 5Apowerhouses Cibolo Steele and SanAntonio Madison. excluding thosetwo outings, the Antlers have givenup just under 13 points per game.

Tivy’s offense has averaged 31points in its three district gamesbehind a strong performance fromsenior quarterback Parks Mcneil, who has rushed for 596 yards and 12scores on the year and passed foranother 857 yards and six TDs.Senior Will Stuckey is also a threatwith 576 yards rushing and threetouchdowns.

Tivy leads its series against Heights20-11-1 in a rivalry dating back to1928, but hasn’t beat the Mules since2005. Heights won the last threemeetings, including a pair of wildcome-from-behind victories in 2007and ‘08 and a one-sided 41-16 rout in2009.

Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
