By DR DAVID MUNDYSuperintendent SheridanCommunity SchoolsEach year I find it amazing how fast

summer goes I knowwhen I was youngerand a student it feltshort but as I havelearned over time it iseven shorter for thosewho have just a fewweeks to close thedoor on a previousyear and get ready forthe nextI cannot thank enough

all the individuals who work diligentlythroughout June and July to make sure theupcoming year is something special for allour students families and faculty mem-bers As a district we are continuing toexpand the opportunities for our studentsand we have a lot of wonderful resourcesto enhance their learning experience

Technology SCS continues to be astate leader in what we provide in regard totechnology and its enhancement of theclassroom For the 2016-17 school year wehave expanded our Bring Your Own Tech-nology program to the entire SHS studentbody grades 9 ndash 12 All students will beasked to bring the device they are mostcomfortable working with to every class-room where teachers can utilize these vitalresources We have also worked to makesure every student who may need assistancewith this program will not be left without adevice Next year we will continue ourschool-provided Chromebook program throughout the entire middle school andthis year we are adding the 5th grade aswell In grades K-4 we have worked fur-ther with our teachers to provide what theyfelt were the best devices to assist theirinstruction and we are very happy withwhat they will be providing Beyond ourfocus on technology devices two otheritems of note are the upgrading of thedistrictrsquos website (one of the top requestsfrom our parents) and utilizing a more ad-vanced and user-friendly messaging system

Curriculum Last year was a vital yearregarding the numerous hours our teachersspent working to align curriculum Kinder-garten through eighth grade year in eachsubject area Our high school teachers havebegun work with College and Career Readycurriculum We still have work to be donebut our educators have done a fantastic jobof approaching this effort with genuine un-derstanding of how this will impact theenrichment of student learning This workhas positively impacted everything in thebuildings how we are running several ofour programs our textbook adoption andwhat we will be utilizing as a part of ourtechnology plan

Facilities As many of our citizens haverecognized and their input has been greatlyappreciated we have worked extremelyhard to upgrade our entire districtrsquos facili-ties and aesthetics Through our SMARTmeetings two years ago this was one of thetop areas those in attendance wanted us tofocus on It has meant a tremendousamount to me when our students on numer-ous occasions have mentioned how greatthe place is looking Over these past twomonths we have put forth a lot of effort inthis area as well While we have completedover 40 projects in this area some of theitems of note are still in progress installingnew windows at SHS adding a bus drive tothe back of SES to lessen traffic congestionon Hinesley Road and upgrading SHSclassrooms where we have added new ta-bles and desks upgraded cabinets paintedthe rooms and door frames added newwhiteboards and added newprojectorsscreen where needed As well

we have upgraded the sound system in theauditorium and the gymnasium and ourdistrict fencing reworked the parking lotsand solved the drainage issue we were hav-ing along the north side of the SHS facili-ties

Solar Power I am very happy with thesupport we are getting from the communityregarding the movement to solar powerWe will be the first and only district inIndiana to be completely reliant on solarpower While there are now many schooldistricts moving toward this avenue to ener-gy provision we are about ready to launchours I will be giving a more comprehen-sive report on our solar project over the nextfew days

Communication Through the monthof July we have posted our district videoand informational flyer in various loca-tions I have received numerous positivecomments and remarks regarding thoseitems We have felt it was important thispast summer to get the word out about whatwe are accomplishing and to celebrate thesuccesses we have had as we are a veryproud district and community I recentlywas informed of a comment on one of ourFacebook postings about our accomplish-ments video asking why there were noscores or numbers posted This was a verygood question one I have addressed inmany conversations We could have postedthose as we are very transparent about thework we are doing but doing so was trou-blesome in two ways First the data wereceive and tests we have taken from theIDOE have changed five straight years Itmakes it very difficult to do true statisticalanalysis with the changing of testing andexpectations in each of these years This issimilar to playing a sport or activity wherethe rules change before each contest Fur-thermore you do not know these rules untilright before game time However the stateis working to rectify this concern for allschools as our representatives have seenthis as a problem as well Also while weneed proper data to truly make guidedchanges as a smaller school SCS has notbeen nor desires to be all aboutnumbers Our teachers review data at leastquarterly and sometimes weekly whichhelps them adjust instruction to better thestudents in their classrooms I have heardfrom our group meetings from ourSMART meetings and in numerous situa-tions that the number one positive of ourdistrict is the individual attention we cangive to help promote the interests of eachstudent Numbers and data help lead a lotof our decisions but the focus needs toremain on kids and children successes Arewe perfect at what we are doing as a dis-trict No but I believe in what we aredoing and I will continue to strive to meetthe expectations of the community

Thank you for your continued supportand we look forward to a great year at SCS
