Introduction

In this essay I will examine many of the possibilities of High Definition (HD) video.

The topic of HD video is one of the many technologies that are essential components to the complete video offering within my major Video

Production.

1.What is HD video?

High definition video refers to any video with a higher amount of lines (resolution) than regular videos.

This shows a process of constant change going from black and white televisions to almost movie like quality in your own homes with the new high definition programs.

*“Original HD specifications date back to the early 1980s, when Japan developed an 1125- line TV standard operating at 30 frames per second (fps).

Japan presented their standard at an international meeting of television engineers in Algiers in 1981 and Japan's NHK presented its analog HDTV system at Swiss conference in 1983.

The NHK system was standardized in the United States as SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) standard #240M in the early 1990s”

The young adult, teen and juvenile market segments have been targeted users based upon their acceptance and easy adoption of new technologies that HD exhibits in video games and soon to come new video game systems that will all have HD settings.

There have been significant changes from the early days of Atari to the Play Station Three (PS3) and the current Xbox 360 which are high definition capable and have specific games that are high definition.

There are many things used now a days with this system on a worldwide everyday basis which will be identified later in this essay.

There is HD audio with the computers.

There are many examples of high definition with the use of movies because you can see it clear and with better color.

2. What are the capabilities of HD video? (cont’)

HD can be accessed on your home personal computer.

I have seen things ranging from the NASA space station launches to rock star and heavy metal videos.

Soon all televisions will have HD or at least HD settings.

These changes may initially be more expensive to improve your home entertainment which I will explain later in this essay.

3. What is the format of HD video?

The format or the general style, or appearance of HD video is easier to see because the lines or dots per inch (dpi) are greater.

The designs will be brighter and color full in HD.

HD makes animation and visual special effects look like movies.

Although, not all current computers or televisions have the HD, the use of HD is on the rise.

New camcorders by Sony already have the HD style

3. What is the format of HD video? (cont’)

*“The 720p60 format is 1280 × 720 pixels, progressive encoding with 60 frames per second (60 Hz).

The 1080i50 format is 1920 × 1080 pixels, interlaced encoding with 50 fields per second

Sometimes interlaced fields are called half-frames, but they are not, because two fields of one frame are temporally shifted.

Frame pulldown and segmented frames are special techniques that allow transmitting full frames by means of

interlaced video stream.” *From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

5. What are the possible problems of HD video?

Although HD video has many advantages and is advancing the way we hear and see videos, there are also disadvantages.

New movies that will be coming out in the near future will only have HD.

Consumers may not have the appropriate equipment to accept HD.

There may be numerous pieces of equipment or accessories that will have to be purchased to have accessibility to the new products, such as cables and special computer chips.

As with the videogames the new games may not play on the old systems with the new HD programs.

Page 17: HD Video Essay (final)

5. What are the possible problems of HD video? (cont’)

The difficulty in upgrading older televisions to HD could be costly or not possible.

There are a lot of old movies that are standard definition that are being attempted to be converted to HD.

The cost to get a lot of new CDs, or they may not make the old movies that convert to the new HD video.

There are many existing television channels that are set to HD already such as USAHD, NBCHD, HBOHD, MAXHD,

SHOHD, MHD, TBSHD, TNTHD, MOJHD, UHD,NFLHD, SNYHD, CNNHD, A&EHD, AND, NGHD that can not be accessed by televisions that are not HD compatible
