THURSDAY WORKSHOP SPEAKERS
FRIDAY SPEAKERS
Charles R. Martinez, DDS, practices in Barrington, Illinois. His Workshop, “Dental Homeopathy,” presents the history, basic concepts, laws, and principles of Homeopathy. The differences between chronic and acute treatments are covered, discussing the indications and limitations of Homeopathy as compared to traditional medicine. He offers remedies with specific dental applications for abscess, anxiety, oral surgery, toothache and traumatic injuries.
James M. Kennedy, DDS, has been in practice since 1975. The focus of his current practice is TMJ, Orthodontics and Sleep Apnea. His Workshop covers the history and the basic concepts that developed into Applied Kinesiology. He teaches how to correctly test muscles for determining information from the body, with emphasis placed on testing that can be done in a dental office setting. In his Workshop, “Applied Kinesiology for the Dental Office,” he shows how to use Applied Kinesiology to determine jaw position and vertical dimension for dental appliances; how to test for dental materials, nutrients or homeopathic remedies; and how to locate areas of dysfunction in the body. George Eversaul, APH, has advocated an inter-‐disciplinary approach for the treatment of TMJ problems by creating patient specific programs combining equilibration after the short term use of dental splints; nutrition including basic diet testing and individualized nutritional supplementation; and physical medicine such as osteopathic manipulative therapy (OMT), physical therapy, cranial osteopathy; and AquaStretch, since the 1970’s. His Workshop, “Practical Wellness Tools for Dentists and Their Patients,” discusses practical wellness tools–diet, nutrition, improving communication–that may help dentists, their families, staff and patients achieve better heath. His Workshop includes his Aquastretch protocol—So bring your bathing suit.
Christopher Shade, PhD, studied metal-‐ligan interactions in the environment and during his PhD work, he patented analytical technology for mercury speciation analysis and later founded Quicksilver Scientific, LLC to commercialize this technology. Dr. Shade focuses on the human aspects of mercury toxicity and the functioning of the human detoxification system. He has developed specific clinical analytical techniques for measuring human mercury exposure and has used his understanding of mercury and glutathione chemistry to design a unique system of products for detoxification that repairs and then maximizes the natural detoxification system. His Thursday Workshop is titled “Looking Inside the Black Box: Understanding analytical approaches, diagnostic tools, and detoxification strategies for mercury intoxication.”
Jerry Tennant, MD, MD(H), MD(P), presenting “Healing is Voltage—The Role of Voltage & Dental Infections in Health & Disease,” is an ophthalmologist and author of Healing is Voltage, The Handbook and Healing is Voltage, Healing Eye Diseases. Dr. Tenant did the majority of the FDA research for the Excimer Laser for VISX that is used for LASIK surgery. As a result of viruses from corneas passing through his mask while he performed 3000 surgeries, he developed encephalitis. He was sent home by Western Medicine with no hope for recovery. Debilitated and bedridden for seven years, he was forced to retire from Ophthalmology. Determined to heal himself, he discovered that cells must have enough voltage to work and that chronic diseases, impacted by acid/alkaline states, was associated with loss of voltage. Learning how to correct voltage in the body lead to the creation of the Tennant Biomodulator. Worldwide, practitioners are using the Biomodulator in their practices to help in their patients’ healing processes. Dr. Tennant has his own clinic and continues to research, lecture and write.
Sammy Noumbissi, DDS, MS, graduated from Howard University College of Dentistry in Washington, DC. He furthered his dental training by attending the full time three-‐year Graduate Program in Implant Dentistry at Loma Linda University in California. His advanced studies culminated with a certificate in Implant Dentistry and a Master’s of Science Degree in Implant Surgery. He is an internationally renowned speaker in metal free Dental Implantology; and his presentation, “Zirconia Implants A Viable and Sometimes Necessary Alternative for Teeth Replacement,” showcases the Zirconia Implants which our Corporate Sponsor, Z-‐Systems®, represents. Dr. Noumbissi practices metal-‐free Implant Dentistry in Silver Spring, MD. Marcy Buckler has over 20 years of experience within the dental industry. Currently Regional Sales Manager for LED Dental, the manufacturer of the VELscope Vx, she has also held sales management positions at 3M ESPE and E & D Dental. She speaks regularly on the topic of oral cancer and the importance of early detection. In her presentation, “Oral Health, Oral Cancer: Market Update & Early Detection for Enhanced Patient Health,” she covers the reasons for dramatic increases in oral cancer, the use of adjunctive devices for early detection and patient benefits, and marketing strategies. Carol Mann holds a Master’s Degree from Harvard University. Professionally, she has been an Assistant Professor of Behavioral Sciences; Training Manager and Leadership Consultant in the computer industry; Ski and Summer Resort owner; Newspaper columnist; radio personality; workshop facilitator; and personal transformation consultant to individuals, groups and businesses nationwide and abroad. Her presentation, “Discover the Wisdom in Your Soul,” will introduce the latest findings about the soul from science, mystical traditions and from Carol’s life and extensive work. You will have the opportunity to discern the difference between ego motives and soul directives in your life. Experiential exercises will allow you to gather new perspectives and knowledge about yourself from your soul.
Christopher Shade, PHD, presents “Understanding Natural Strategies for Mercury Detoxification,” discussing the basis of natural heavy metal detoxification–the body’s glutathione system. Understanding how the system works and how to affect it gives you the needed tools to design effective detoxification strategies.
SATURDAY SPEAKERS
Leo Szymborski is the owner of pH Prescription, a subsidiary of No Brainer, LLC International, a global leader in point of use water filtration equipment manufacturing. Founded in 2005, No Brainer is a leading supplier of office and home drinking water solutions. In his presentation, “Alkaline Structured Water,” Mr. Szymborski will discuss water–distilled, purified, treated by reverse osmosis filters–and water alkalinity and how it affects health.
Nathan S. Bryan, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Molecular Medicine within the Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He is also on faculty within the Department of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the UT Houston Medical School. Dr. Bryan’s research is dedicated to providing a better understanding of the interactions of nitric oxide and related metabolites with their different biological targets at the molecular and cellular level and the significance of these reactions for physiology and patho-‐physiology. His presentation, “Nitric Oxide Generating Bacteria Affect Cardiovascular Health of Host: Linking Oral Health to Cardiovascular Disease,” discusses the data that indicates a mechanistic link between the well-‐known association between oral health and cardiovascular risks. Donna Ka’imana Clingaman has been practicing the SITH® process as a way of life since 1983. Since 1990, Ka’imana has been coordinating and conducting classes in the USA and Australia. IZI LLC sponsors Ka’imana’s presentation, “Self I-‐Dentity through Ho’oponopono (SITH®),” which is an updated Hawaiian problem solving process for the release of memories that are experienced as problems. It provides a step-‐by-‐step approach to achieving peace, balance and a new meaning of life through an understanding of one’s Self-‐I-‐Dentity.
William Kent Renas, DC, from Front Royal, Virginia, has been in practice since 1982. He will address unresolved health issues, focusing on the impact of stress on the neuro emotional component of health and how stress may manifest and affect our daily lives. His presentation, “The Neuro Emotional Component of Health,” shows how using NET, the Neuro Emotional Technique, may help resolve the physical manifestations of emotional stress for dentists, their staff, their patients and their families. President’s Message Greetings to all!
I hope this finds you all well rested this winter season. The past few months have seen some great new developments. We began a mentor program late last year for new members. Please let either Roberta (our Executive Director) or me know if you are in need of any assistance with advancing your skills with your mentors. We are here to help you as best we're able. We are also embarking on the creation of a new and hopefully much better functioning website. It will have some new features, including a blog for our members and the general public, discussing current concepts and new ways of thinking/practicing. In addition, during this year, we will begin a series of Webinars. We hope this will help further education and grow our membership and exposure. As you all know our upcoming Annual Meeting will be April 18‐20th in the Washington, DC area. Our theme for this year is “New Technology & Techniques‐‐What you don't know can't help you” and the meeting is based on a good smattering of cutting edge technologies that are fairly new to the marketplace. We plan on having a series of short presentations with the following topics: Stem Cells; Biomodulator; Iodine 101; Zirconia Implants; Nitric Oxide; Mercury Detox; the Neuro‐Emotional Technique; Dentistry’s Dirty Little Secret; a Clairvoyant/Soul Reader; and Ho'oponopono, a Hawaiian healing technique. Our Thursday workshops will be on Dental Homeopathy; Applied Kinesiology for the Dental Office; Practical Wellness Tools‐‐Communication, Nutrition & Supplementation and an afternoon of Aquastretch; Mechanisms and Applications in Mercury Intoxication & Detoxification. It promises to be a weekend of exposure to new clinical pearls that we can take home and start using in the office on Monday morning. Perhaps the best feature of almost everything we plan on presenting is the price tags are all fairly small, so it won't cost a fortune to begin their utilization, not only for your patients but also for your own health as well as the health of your family. If you haven't signed up for yet, make sure to do so. I'll look forward to seeing you all in April. Stay well, Dr. Kevin Boehm President Holistic Dental Association
Message from the Executive Director We welcome the speakers and exhibitors to our 36th annual meeting. We welcome the opportunity to interact with speakers who are also participating in exhibits. I was a regular dentist for about 4 years before taking an orthopedic orthodontic course in Chicago. My journey into Holistic Dentistry began there, and after 35 years I still continue my education with a variety of conferences and educational opportunities each year. My path has taken me through dental / cranial osteopathy, kinesiology, massage, homeopathy, Buteyko breathing techniques, and myo‐functional therapy among many others. Each learning experience has added to my knowledge base and improved my ability to care for patients. I am so grateful to the many teachers who have made this process of becoming a holistic dentist possible. I am equally grateful to all of my fellow students (doctors, therapists, and healthcare practitioners) who made the journey so fun and exciting, and who also pointed me in new educational directions. I wouldn’t be where I am today without you.
A few years ago our practice, Health Centered Dentistry, moved to its new home in River Falls, Wisconsin ‐ just outside the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area. The move enabled us to incorporate new technologies and treatments into the practice while providing an atmosphere of serenity and harmony.
There are two therapies that have most excited me in recent years, one is a new technique for improving overall function of the oral systems and the other is a nutraceutical that improves cell function on a DNA level.
Oral System Biology (OSB) was developed by Dr. Farrand Robson – Tacoma, WA. The focus of this oral appliance therapy is the importance of tongue function as it relates to not only the oral systems, but also its impact on the autonomic nervous system. This therapeutic approach is based on improving the proprioception between the brain, body, and tongue. I have personally seen an unbelievable number of dysfunctional patterns of the body that could be positively affected by this therapy. At a recent seminar out in Tacoma I watched Dr. Robson utilize this appliance therapy to enhance cardiac function as monitored by a cardiac ultrasound. A dentist who was slated for valve replacement surgery and a patient who was on the heart transplant list both had significant improvements in their cardiac function with OSB appliance therapy.
Product B is a nutraceutical telomere support system that has been shown to lengthen the telomeres of human skin cells in‐vitro. A Harvard Medical research study demonstrated that when telomeres are lengthened, many symptoms considered to represent aging reverse themselves in the organism. Patients in our office have seen considerable changes in energy levels, including improved ability to focus/concentrate, improved physical capacity (including eyesight improvements), as well as reduced pains and healthier hair, skin, and nails. We have even had a patient for whom there seems to have been some improvement in the quality of her dentin. We recommend Product B to all of our patients.
It is an exciting time in Holistic Dentistry and it has never been easier for our knowledge to be shared with one another. I look forward to everything you all will teach me in the future.
AquaStretch: An Amazing New Wellness Modality
By George Eversaul, APH
“AquaStretch may be the most important new wellness modality developed in the last 50 years”, says Jack Anstandig, M.D., a Cleveland Clinic trained neurologist, (702 529 0129). Dr. Anstandig also wrote, “In my neurology practice (of over 20 years), I focused on pain management and worked with thousands of patients with various pain related issues. AquaStretch is a therapeutic/wellness modality that surpasses any previous therapies with regards to rapidity of improvement, consistent reproducibility, person satisfaction, and cost effectiveness.”
AquaStretch has also been described as “a breakthrough in pain management and preventive medicine” by Fuller Royal, M.D., Medical Director of the Nevada Clinic (702 732 1400) and former President of the Nevada Board of Homeopathic Medical Examiners for over 25 years. In support of a $3M federal Innovation Grant application, Dr. Royal further wrote about over 600 referred Nevada Clinic patients, “AquaStretch has been consistently remarkable in its ability to immediately and significantly reduce chronic pain. Patients with fibromyalgia, pain due to a prior injury or surgery, with back or neck pain and MRI confirmed disc problems, and idiopathic pain, had exceptional improvements. Most were also able to dramatically reduce or discontinue pain or sleep medications.” AquaStretch is also strongly supported by Jessica Huss, DPT, (480 217 9433), the 2013 Vice‐President, Education, for the Aquatics Section of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Dr. Huss has been doing aquatic therapy since 2001 and now uses AquaStretch 80% of the time, and all the traditional aquatic therapy tools she previously learned the other 20%. She averages around 200 A/S patients per month, with usually over half of them wellness clients.
Dr. Huss recently participated in an AquaStretch research study in which preliminary data found total knee replacement (TKR) patients demonstrated almost double (9.6° vs 5°) daily improvement in flexion and reported 80% less treatment induced pain than land based physical therapy. Because of the dramatic difference in pain, her patients almost always refused to go back to land based PT (other than for strength building). Due to the profound reduction in pain and significant restoration of mobility with A/S, she refused to allow any of her patients to be in the study’s control group on ethical grounds.
In June of 2012, Dr. Huss made one of seven AquaStretch presentations, by six different speakers, at the International Aquatic Therapy Symposium, where no A/S lectures had been offered in prior years. One of the other A/S speakers at the International Aquatic Therapy Symposium was Beth Scalone, DPT, who made the first AquaStretch presentation at the national Combined Sessions Meeting of the APTA on January 20, 2013. Dr. Huss is now strongly advocating APTA research on pre‐surgical AquaStretch due to its observed ability to reduce post‐surgical pain, reduce the need for strong pain medications, improve sleep, and to make rehabilitation both more clinically effective and more cost efficient.
What is AquaStretch?
AquaStretch is essentially a form of aquatic myo‐fascial release that applies some of the principles of cranial osteopathy in water. In summary, A/S is generally three times as fast and twice as effective as table based cranial. Similarly, A/S is often more effective than chiropractic or massage, and lasts two to three times longer, especially in patients who regularly need massage or vertebral mobilizations.
AquaStretch is different from traditional cranial work in at least two major ways. First, the patient is repeatedly encouraged to “Move, if you feel the need to move”, to break the patient’s expectation that the therapist is going to “do them”, which may cause the patient to inhibit their natural intuitive movement. Secondly, AquaStretch facilitators are taught first to follow the intuitive movement stimulated by putting a joint into stretch (osteopathic “unwinding”), as are cranial osteopaths. But then, they are encouraged to accent the intuitive movement. The premise is that the body knows what to do, but that it doesn’t have the sufficient strength or endurance to do it by itself.
Why does AquaStretch work?
According to the proposed Fascial Adhesion Theory, AquaStretch is thought to make relatively permanent changes in the fascia. It is theorized that following injury, repetitive use, and/or premature use of injured joints, the connective tissue may excessively calcify protein collagen matrix which cause restriction and/or pain with movement. In the water, the body can stretch into positions literally not possible on land, which may then allow such fascial adhesions to immediately break free. AquaStretch essentially restores flexibility, which in turn may improve neurological and other physiological functions.
AquaStretch & Fitness
AquaStretch is also of major breakthrough in the area of fitness and sports performance. In her book, “AquaStretch Foundations”, Laurie DeNomme, former Assistant Director of Operations for the Aquatic Exercise Association, describes AquaStretch’s six major fitness benefits for athletes: 1 Restore Flexibility lost from prior accidents, surgeries, sports injuries, or over‐training; 2 Increase Wellness Motivation by reducing chronic aches & pains, and by improving sleep; 3 Decrease Muscle Soreness/Tension due to intense physical training or excessive workouts; 4 Increase Training Efficiency by decreasing recovery time from workout soreness; 5 Help Get Athletes “Loose” before competition because of A/S’s profound relaxation benefits; 6 Improve Sports Performance by restoring systemic flexibility and reducing pain.
If you would like to experience AquaStretch, when you register for the annual Holistic Dental Association meeting, please call the Executive Director of the HDA, Roberta Glasser, 305‐904‐4346 to make a reservation with George Eversaul, AquaStretch’s creator, who will be giving free A/S sessions to HDA attendees on Thursday and Friday evenings. If you know a massage therapist, aquatic therapist, personal trainer, or aquatic exercise instructor in your home community that you would like to learn AquaStretch, please have them email [email protected] for course opportunities and a free copy of the 2013 A/S Training Manual. AquaStretch has been approved for continuing education credit by ACE (American Council on Exercise), AEA (Aquatic Exercise Association), and the National Certification Board.
CeramicDentalImplants:AnAlternativetoTitaniumand
Titanium‐Alloys
SammyNoumbissiDDSMS.SilverSpring,MDUSASinceDr.Brånemark first introduced titaniumdental implants, avariety of materials have been used successfully for about 40years. Today, implants are made either of commercially puretitanium (cpTi) or titanium‐alloys. In addition to itsbiocompatibility, titaniumwas also initially believed to be inert,nontoxic,andnonallergenic1,2.However,severaldrawbackshavebeen documented in the literaturewith the use of titanium andtitanium‐alloys as implant materials in medicine and dentistry.High concentrations of titanium have been detected in tissuesurrounding dental implants mostly as a result of wear orcorrosion of the titanium implant surface. In an animal study,Weingart et al.3 showed that nine months after titaniumimplantation, titanium particles had spread and were found inadjacent lymph nodes. This indicates the possibility thatphagocytescouldtransporttitaniumparticlestothelymphnodeswithout any initial or immediate inflammatory response andpotentiallycauselaterimmunologicreactions. An increasing number of peoplewho suffer some form of toothlossarechoosingtoreplacetheirteethwithdental implants.Forthelastthirtyplusyearstheonlyandhighlysuccessfuloptionforfree‐standingtoothreplacementavailableintheUnitedStatesandother countries has been titanium and titanium‐alloy dentalimplants. There are increasing reports both in dentistry andmedicine of individuals developing sensitivity and allergies totitaniumand/ortitanium‐alloys.Ofevenmoreconcernarethatsome of these implants are corroding, once they are exposed tobodily fluids such as saliva. These metal implants are alsodeveloping electrical activity when they are coupled withprosthetic components made of other metal alloys. As thetitaniumimplantscorrode, theyareknowntoreleasemetalions, which create low‐level electrical currents through the body andweakenthestructuralintegrityoftheimplants. With recent advances in implantable biomaterials research andtechnology, bioceramicssuchaszirconia(zirconiumdioxide)arenow available, and with it a new generation of modern dentalimplantsisborn.ZirconiumSilicate(ZrSO4)ismined,treated,andtransformedintozirconiumdioxide,whichisalsocalledzirconia.Zirconia is thecrystal formof thematerialzirconium, which isatransitional metal. After mining and processing of zirconiumsilicate, zirconium is isolated and further processed under hightemperature and pressure. Zirconium then undergoes anoxidationandcrystallizationprocesswhichallowsittotransitionintoastructurallystableandinertcrystal.Thisbioceramiccrystal, called Yttrium Stabilized Tetragonal Zirconium Polycrystal (Y‐

Zirconia can sustain an extreme loadcapacity, features a very long service life, and presents noconductivityor interference in thebody’smeridiansystems; it isthemosthygienic,non‐electricityconducting,andstablematerialfordentalimplantologyandorthopedics.Zirconiaimplantsalsopresentnodangerofcorrosion,somethingthatisoftenaseriousproblemwithmetal‐baseddentalimplants.Corrosionofa titaniumdental implantoccurswhenit iscoupledwiththemetalframeworkorabutmentofthecrown, whichmoreoften than not is a less noble metal or alloy than that of thetitanium implant. Anotheradvantage of zirconia is its low affinity for plaque (picture#1).Clinical observations and studies show that zirconia implantscompared to ornext to titanium implants accumulatemuch lessplaqueandallowforsuperiorgingivalhealth(picture#2).RadioactivityandZirconiaImplantsThere is a controversial and highly misunderstood aspect ofzirconium dioxide in terms of its radiological output. ZirconiumSilicate (ZrSO4), depending where it is mined, can becontaminatedwithnaturalradioactive isotopes includingradium(226Ra) and thorium (228Th). Thiswas amajor concern in theearly1990’sbecausetheoresselectedwerecontaminated.Todayzirconium dioxide processing plants have the technology toremove these contaminants, and are able to yield and use verypure powders. For example, the radiation emitted by a 3mol%Y2O3‐ZrO2powderwas thesameorderofmagnitudeasaluminapowder, bothofwhichwereseveralordersofmagnitudelessthanthat typically measured for water, vegetables, and livestock.Zirconia hip‐ball replacementsweigh approximately 100mg andhaveanaturalradiologicaloutputof1mSvperyear.Theaverageweightofazirconiadentalimplantis1g,translatingintoanaturalradiological output of roughly 0.01mSv/year. ObservationsandExperiencesfromThePath
Dr.RobertE.Nelson,DDS,AcupuncturistTMJ,SectionII
In TMJ section l, we discussed how to initiate patients intotreatment and what we do first. The approach is conservative, simple, very effective, and progressive if necessary. The initialtreatment isbasedon locatinganddiagnosing theoffending tooth,asusuallytheproblemisabiteimbalance.Ifitis,weadjustthebite.The diagnosis and adjustment of the tooth is mostly based onappliedkinesiology.(Idouseaconventionaltoolonceinawhileforcorroboration, such as vitalometer, radiograph, or tapping). I alsodiscussedthetypeofnight‐guardthatIuse.
Agoodquestionis“WhatifIdon’tknowappliedkinesiology?”
Basically, you would use the same approach to the patient. Theinterview would be the same. The tools of evaluation would beconventional, and while you likely wouldn’t be a superstar everytimeout of the blocks, youwouldbedoing a lot of goodwork. In1979, Dr. Gelb stated that in the previous five years he had gonefrom 60% success with TMJ to 90‐95% when he added appliedkinesiology, acupuncture, andnutritiontohisregimen.Atthe timeofhearingDr.Gelb’slecturein1979,IfeltthatIwas60%“stateofthe art” with TMJ. If after the initial stages of TMJ treatment (bite balancing of anunbalanced tooth) are complete and there are still problems, wewill have the patient wear a night‐guard. I might mention that pathways of acupuncture energy on thesurface of the body are called meridians. For instance, thegallbladderhas itsownmeridianorpathwayonthesurfaceof thebody. A problemwith the gallbladder organ can cause symptomssomewhere along its pathway. Interestingly the gallbladder andstomachmeridiansarethemeridiansmostinvolvedintheheadandneck difficulties I see. It sounds simple and it is usually a simple fix. It issurprising to me how few practitioners in the holistic fieldunderstand the ramifications of this concept, and how to correctthese types of imbalances easily and quickly. Especially sincecorrecting digestive imbalances is the key toworking successfullywith a wide variety of symptoms the body may have. Withoutcorrecting the digestive imbalances, anything else we do may becompletelyorpartially redundant.
