“There is no question that Saratoga’s economic vitality is strongly influenced by horse racing. Saratoga Springs is proud to be a racing community and grateful to the Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds who enhance our quality of life. The least we can do for the horses that work so hard for us is embrace the cause of aftercare. The city is honored to lead this charge.”

7Friday, August 21, 2015 The Saratoga Special

Funny Cide doesn’t walk the shedrow or even reluctantly hang out in the pony stall anymore. Jersey Town is a stallion. Sky Blazer was re-tired and his stall is empty. Confron-tation got sold to Dubai.

But Barclay Tagg’s barn percolates with Saratoga success this summer with three wins from just 10 starts at the meet. Tagg, who trained his first winner in 1972, has 22 stalls filled with an assortment of horses includ-ing several promising 2-year-olds.

Tuesday, he deputized his long-time assistant and girlfriend Robin Smullen, with the stable tour – but checked in with a “She doing OK?” about halfway through. She did fine, stopping at each stall for some insight for The Special’s Joe Clancy.

Storm On The Moon: “The pony. He broke his maiden in 1:09 (in 2010). He’s pretty good, but if you feed him – forget it.”

Pure Of Spirit: “Barclay owns her. She belonged to the Stronach Group and when they sent them to us the horses all were go-ing in the sale regardless of where they were and what they did. She didn’t make it to the races, but we loved the way she trained. Bar-clay bought her for $5,000 and she’s earned $96,000. She was in here Opening Day, but she had a bruised foot and we had to scratch. There’s a race the last day of the meet and hopefully we can make that.”

Highland Sky: “Two-year-old of Bon-ner Young’s. He’s by Sky Mesa. Nice colt, he should run in the last book. He’s out of Kristy With A K so he’s a cousin to some good ones. He’s good-sized, a nice 2-year-old. I think he’ll run well first time out.”

Tale Of Mist: “Tonalist’s baby brother by Tale Of Ekati. Two-year-old, he’s about 16-2 so we’re taking our time. He breezed (Aug. 17), 36 and 4. He does everything nicely but he’s so tall. We had him breezing halves, but

the hair kind of stood up on the back of your neck and made you think ‘Maybe we should slow down.’ We gave him a couple of easy months, no breezes, and that was his first breeze back.”

Street Jersey: “He’s Jersey Town’s half-brother, by Street Cry. He has run three times and had three thirds. He’s not near as good as Jersey Town was, but don’t forget Jersey Town started at maiden 25. This horse doesn’t have that luxury. He’s 3, he can improve.”

Beaukati: “He’s a cheeky little bugger, but he’s just about ready to run. He breezed a half out of the gate the other day. He kind of has ADD, we put blinkers on and that has helped a lot.”

Homespun Hero: “This is a 2-year-old Hard Spun colt that’s just about ready to run. Again, there are two races in the last book – one for him and one for Highland Sky.”

Tale For Ruby: “We thought she might do something special in her first start, but then she hooked Rachel’s Valentina. She was fifth, but she was second the whole way early and faltered, beaten a head for fourth. We real-ly thought she’d win first out. She had beaten (debut winner) Realm every single work they

worked, every single work and not just a lit-tle. Walked away from him. Then we got up here and I’m not sure she liked this surface as much as Belmont’s surface. The first time she worked out of the gate with Realm, she broke very poorly – spotted him 5 lengths and then beat him. We really thought she would win. We didn’t care whether Rachel was in there, but I’m not sure she likes this surface. She likes it a little more sandy.”

Verve’s Tale: “Tale Of Verve’s full-sis-ter. She’s nice. We needed to slow down on her. She worked with Tale Of Mist.”

Kitzys Rocket: “This is her stall (deco-rated with stuffed animals). She’s cooling out. She is a terrible stall-walker and we could not stop her from stall-walking in Florida, only by tying her up. When we got back to Belmont we had toys so we brought them over and hung them on her screen and she hasn’t stall-walked since. Sounds crazy, I know. It looks like Romper Room, but hey whatever works.”

Unbelievable Dream: “She’s a graded stakes winner. She’s going to run in the Yaddo. She needs to come from last and everyone that rides her lets her move at the three-eighths pole because they have so much horse and then at the eighth pole she’s got

nothing left. Angel (Cruz) got hurt, he was go-ing to ride her. We’ve gotten Junior Alvarado, and he’ll listen. She’s got a quarter-of-a-mile run, that’s it. They’re going to retire her this fall and breed her.”

My Sweet Girl: “Caroline Thomas’ sis-ter. She’s going to run in an a-other-than on the 24th. She broke her maiden on the dirt, but she’s a better turf horse. She’s just now starting to get the length (of her sister).”

Realm: “He’s at the moment the big horse, but he’s tack-walking. He had some mi-nor growing pains, heat in an ankle and heat in a knee so everything says slow down. We’re so far ahead now, he broke his maiden in his first start in July. For us, that’s golden. We thought we’d just walk him 30 days. You want to do more just because he broke his maiden in his first start at Saratoga. You want to go in the stakes, but when everything about it says ‘Listen, take it easy’ you have to listen. Barclay bought him at the (Fasig-Tipton) Timonium sale as a yearling. He’s by Haynesfield.”

Royal Ekati: “This is a nice guy, Tale Of Ekati baby for Sackatoga Stable. We paid a lot of money for him, $180,000 at the (Fasig-Tip-ton) New York-bred sale last year. He’s been slow, had shins, but he’s a really, really well-put-together horse. He doesn’t look big because he’s so well proportioned, but he’s 16-2. We’re really taking our time with him. He’s fun to ride because he doesn’t let any-thing bother him and does everything right. The first day back galloping I broke him off the right way and somebody buzzed me like 10 inches from my stirrup and he didn’t even blink. It was like, ‘Yeah so what.’ He’s a nice, big, solid horse. You notice him, everybody notices him. He’s a very efficient mover. He’ll gallop everybody to death. He has the luxury of running in a New York-bred maiden race.”

“When I was running Beau Purple, I said to one of my owners, ‘This horse running today, I’ve got a funny feeling about this horse. It was incredible how he worked. I should bet $5,000 on him.’ He said, ‘Come on you jellyfish, I’ll give you the $5,000.’ He knew I didn’t bet. He probably did. When you think about it, he only paid $12.

He had everybody else in a trap. There was no speed outside of my horse, the other two jocks on Kelso and Carry Back, Shoemaker and Rotz, were playing opossum with each other all the way. He was just galloping along, 12, 24…when they put up three-quarters in 12, he already worked three-quarters of a mile in 10. The way he had been working, he was only galloping. He’s canter-ing, he can’t get tired, how the hell is he going to get tired? Now the two horses move in unison, you never heard such a roar in your life, it’s the Fourth of July, 50,000 people in the stands, two of the best horses in the world, Kelso and Carry Back, biggest race of my life, at least then.”

ROCK FALL

BY ANNISE MONTPLAISIRRon Moquett’s job is pretty easy

when it comes to One Mean Man. “Just take care of him, keep him

happy and lead him over and don’t mess up anything he did,” Moquett said about the Mizzen Mast colt outside the stakes barn Wednesday morning. “He’s (co-owned by) a guy that I used to work for named Bernie Flint, and when this race come up he wanted me to have him for this race. He’s a good horse, he’s well prepped, he’s got a great base on him by Mr. Flint.”

One Mean Man comes into today’s $100,000 Schenectady Stakes going 5 ½ furlongs on the turf at Saratoga Race Course off a debut maiden vic-

tory at the same distance on the grass July 19 at Ellis Park.

“It was a tougher race than people thought,” Moquett said about One Mean Man’s previous start. “The horse was at Ellis Park, there’s a lot of really decent horses, some horses that used to be here. You know, like you’ve got Rusty Arnold, Dale Ro-mans, Kenny McPeek, all the same guys you see here are there. They just didn’t bring as many horses up here. So you can get outrun there really quick, and he did a good job to beat a nice field there.”

One Mean Man shipped to Sara-toga from Flint’s base at Churchill

Downs in Kentucky Wednesday night. Flint remains on the owner line, along with Hillerich Racing, and Moquett is hopeful about the colt’s chances.

“It’s a good race, they’re all evenly matched,” he said. “It’ll be interesting if it stays on the turf or not. Any time you see names like the ones that are in there like with Wesley Ward and those guys, there’s valuable horses,

and you’re liable to see a good race.” Presque Isle Downs-based trainer

Adam Rice entered two: Don’t Be So Salty and Montauk Cove.

Don’t Be So Salty won his debut Aug. 2 at Saratoga in a 5 ½-furlong turf maiden special weight, making him one of two contenders who have

previously won on the Saratoga turf. The other is the Christophe Clement-trained Too Discreet.

“He’s been doing good, he came out of the race good, training good,” Rice said of Don’t Be So Salty. “Got a nice little light breeze on him last Fri-day. He’s done everything well, he stayed in Sara-toga, been breezing on the dirt. I galloped him this morning, he felt great. Just looking forward to the race.”

The Schenectady will be the fifth start this year for stablemate Montauk Cove. The Circular Quay gelding’s most recent start was the Tyro Stakes Aug. 8 at Monmouth Park, where he finished seventh af-ter a troubled trip.

“Had a little trouble weekend before last at Monmouth Park,” Rice said. “Looked a little green when traffic got tight on the leading end. And you know, might have cost us a couple spots. But we have to live with that, keep going forward. He’s shown some talent. A little smaller field here, I think we’ll be alright. Not so much of a loaded sprint race as Monmouth.

“I feel good, he’s been training good, doing good. Gave him a light work over at Presque Isle before I brought him over here. I feel confident about it. Really all we can do is hope for the best.”

Too Discreet lived up to his pedigree with an im-pressive debut 19 days ago going the same 5 ½-fur-

long trip as the Schenectady. A full-brother to Grade 1 winner and

$1,263,900-earner Discreet Marq, Too Discreet showed speed in his debut win after a bump at the break and won by 2 1/2 lengths for owner-breeder Patricia Generazio.

The son of Discreet Cat is 7-2 on the morn-ing-line and Joel Rosario gets the return call.

Wesley Ward, in England this week for the Ebor meeting at York racecourse, entered three for the Schenectady in Bruised Orange, Laxfield Road and Sheikh Of Sheikhs.

at Royal Ascot in her most recent start, was entered in Wednesday’s Bolton Landing but scratched out of that spot. She’s the 5-2 favorite on the morning line for owner Hat Creek Racing.

Rafael Hernandez rode her to victo-ry in an April 8 maiden race on the dirt at Keeneland before her Royal Ascot trip and gets the return call from the No. 7 post.

Ward also entered Laxfield Road into the body of the race. The Quali-ty Road filly and 3-1 second choice on the early line is a likely scratch after finishing third in Wednesday’s Bolton Landing.

Sheikh Of Sheikhs, a colt by Dis-creetly Mine who cost $330,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May 2-year-olds in training sale, is entered for the main track only and would be making his debut if the race is taken off the grass.

Ward will run the unbeaten Scat Daddy filly Acapulco in the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes Friday and Pimlico maiden winner Finnegan in the Group 2 Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Gimcrack Stakes.

Saratoga’s leading rider, Irad Ortiz Jr., has the mount on Acapulco, while Hall of Famer and three-time Sarato-ga titlist Edgar Prado will ride Finneg-an.

Dr. Shane, third in the Rockville Centre going 6 furlongs on the dirt July 18, completes the body of the field en-tered to run on the grass. The son of Freud is also a probable scratch in fa-vor of next week’s Funny Cide Stakes for New York-breds, trainer Nick Esler said Wednesday morning.

“It’s tough because he’s turf bred and I really want to get him on the turf,” Esler said. “This race was listed for two months as New York-bred, restricted stakes, 5 ½ on the turf. I really didn’t think he really could get beat going 5 ½ on the turf against New York-breds. When I nominated him they told me all along it was an open race and that it was a misprint. It’s unfortunate.”

“On paper the (Funny Cide) might come up a little lighter. You can still jump up 10, 12 points on the turf and get beat and finish fourth and not get any black-type, so the most likely spot to get some black-type would be the Funny Cide.”

– COT CAMPBELL, DOGWOOD STABLE

"Dogwood has campaigned a few steeplechasers for a long time.

We even won an Eclipse Award in 1987 – with Inlander. Steeplechasing is a great alternative for

BY BRANDON VALVOTricky Zippy likes things her own way. Despite wearing the purple No. 10 saddle cloth,

she was the first to leave the paddock prior to the $100,000 Union Avenue Stakes Thursday at Sara-toga Race Course. The 3-year-old City Zip filly hes-itated on the path near the paddock bar, skipped the post parade and went straight to the starting Tod Marks

gate. Once she arrived, Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez was forced to dismount as the gate crew loaded her.

Even coming down to the finish of the Union Avenue, she did her own thing, striding home all alone by 4 3/4 lengths in the 12th running of the New York-bred stakes for fillies and mares.

There’s good reason to give Tricky Zippy her space.

She’s difficult to handle and can even be unsafe at times. Last November at Aqueduct, Tricky Zippy flipped in the paddock and landed on her rider, Mike Luzzi, leaving him with a broken pel-vis.

“She’s really quirky,” said Jimmy Jerkens, who trains the filly for New-man Racing. “You’ve got to be careful around the barn and stuff. She flips and reacts and you just have to have a lot of patience with her. You have to watch her. She can be dangerous. I don’t know if she sees shadows or something. If someone just raises their hand around her she’ll go on you. She hits her head so many times she’s got scrapes.”

Tricky Zippy came into the paddock with a lead pony and was kept away from other horses in the corner of the paddock in an effort to keep her calm. She skipped the parade ring and she is the first to enter the track, but even those precautions were not enough as Velazquez was forced to dismount while Tricky Zippy acted up entering the racetrack.

“She’s always like that,” said Velazquez, who rode Tricky Zippy to victory in her prior start July 18. “She was like that at Belmont. We just have to let her do her own thing and keep her moving.”

Tricky Zippy was professional once the gates opened. She stalked pace-set-ting Irish Whisper through a quar-ter-mile of :21.82 and a half of :44.87 before making the lead as the field turned for home. Once in the stretch, she kicked clear while Velazquez kept her to her task. Tricky Zipped complet-ed the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.87 as the race’s 5-2 second choice. Willet, who gave Tricky Zippy 10 pounds, was a distant second while Miss Da Point fin-ished third.

“She did it easy and happy so I left

her alone,” Velazquez said. “She was quick enough (out of the gate), so there was no concern with the post.”

Tricky Zippy’s victory is the culmination of decades of hard work by breeder Donald Newman, the founder of Newman Racing who passed away last December. Since then, his children, Adam, Richard, Matthew and Rebecca, along with their stepmother Gail, have kept the family partnership together.

“This means more than I can tell you,” Adam Newman said. “We’re Newman Rac-ing and we’re only Newman racing because of my dad, who passed away in December. This was all him. He left it to us and we’re carrying it on. To be blessed with a horse like this from out of nowhere, I can’t put into words what it means for all of us. This is what he worked for, for 40 years.”

Newman Racing has been around since the 1970s, but it took a long evolution for the family stable to transform from a claiming operation to producing homebred stakes winners.

“There was a time when we had a lot of claiming horses,” Adam Newman said. “But we were in a different mode then. Over the

past 10 years I’d say we got away from all that. We’ve just been trying to breed our own. It was a process. We’ve only got four mares now and one is old and we’re probably going to retire her. The dam of this filly we raced. We bought her here at Saratoga and she won her first start here. She’s a nice mare.”

Tricky Zippy gave Jerkens his first win of the meet. He took over the filly’s training during the Saratoga meet.

“The owner … asked me if I wanted to train, not only her, he has a few others,” Jerkens said. “I said, ‘I don’t really have the room. It wouldn’t be fair to just take one and not the others. That wouldn’t be fair. I said, ‘I don’t want to do that. I don’t want to be greedy.’ But then two days later he said, ‘Well, for now just take her.’ I said, ‘OK, we’ll figure out the rest later.’ ”

Jerkens is unsure about Tricky Zippy’s next start, while the partners of Newman Racing are riding the Saratoga dream.

“I don’t want to get ahead of ourselves,” Adam Newman said. “We’re thinking about the Prioress closing weekend. Obvi-ously that’s open company, but it’s 3-year-olds only. She ran awfully well here. She obviously likes the track. She likes Jimmy. She seems to be progressing. So, we’ll talk about it.”

Additional reporting by Annise Mont-plaisir and Billy Blake.

Chinchillas cannot bathe in water due to their thick fur’s inability to dry easily, so they dust bathe instead. Chinchilla Dust is the moniker of the 2-year-old filly who won the sev-enth race Thursday at Saratoga Race Course.

The unique name comes from the one question owner and breeder Charles Engel’s daughter Dominique Engel, D.V.M., was unable to answer on her final exams at veterinary school.

“When she was taking her finals at vet school, there was one question she couldn’t answer,” Engel said about his daughter in the winner’s circle. “Being a very lovely Latino girl she gets very excited when she gets mad. So I, over a Tod Marks

telephone, am being harangued over this difficult question she couldn’t answer. And she’s taking off, as occasionally happens for the one question she couldn’t answer on her finals. And I start to laugh, because she says ‘What’s Chinchilla dust?’ I’m laughing, she says ‘What the hell is that?’ So she gets madder and madder at me. Finally I said it has to be the name for a horse. So that’s where that came from.”

Chinchilla Dust, a daughter of Freud out of No-tacharlie’sangel, by Fappie’s Notebook, was mak-ing her second start after a sixth in a 5 ½-furlong maiden on the dirt July 11 at Belmont Park.

Trainer Michael Wilson, who is married to Dominique Engel, had a difficult time finding the right race for Chinchilla Dust after her first start was delayed by an injury.

“My father-in-law owns her and he wanted to run on the dirt,” Wilson said. “She was ready for her first race but she ripped her eye open and we had to put stitches in two days before the race so we scratched. We entered her back against the fillies and didn’t get in. So I put her against the boys. Then I argued my stance to get her on the turf at Saratoga.”

Fractious in the paddock before the 5 ½-furlong turf maiden special weight for state-breds, Chinchilla Dust reared once and dumped her tack before it was secure. She proceeded to act anxious as they finished saddling her in a stall.

“That’s her. She’s really difficult,” Wilson said. “It took us two months to break her, longer than any other horse to break. She’s always had ability. It was just a matter of patience.”

Engel’s homebred broke from post 8 and sat off the early leaders along the backstretch. On the turn, Chinchil-la Dust moved inside of Freudsalm and Startwithsilver. Chinchilla Dust and Startwithsilver dueled down the stretch with the winner scoring by a nose.

Chinchilla Dust is the first foal out of Notacharlie’sangel, whom En-gel purchased for $6,500 at the 2012 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga fall mixed sale.

“The mare I bought for $6,500 at the sales here,” Engel said. “They all laughed at me and this is her first foal. Sixty-five hundred in foal to Freud, who cost a $10,000 stallion fee, so I thought that was a good buy.

“The plans for this filly, we need to take our time. She’s only a 2-year-old, she’s a pretty excitable girl. Freuds, by and large, tend to improve with age and distance, so whether or not we can get that mind thinking about that we have to see.”

– Annise Montplaisir

• Lisa Lewis added blinkers for Our Independence’s second start, hoping the colt would show more focus, and it worked for her second win of the meet. The 3-year-old son of Put It Back broke his maiden in the fourth, a 5 1/2-fur-long maiden claimer on the Mellon Turf Course.

Our Independence lunged and was bumped at the start of his debut July 17 at Belmont, finishing 11th of 12 for a $40,000 tag going 7 furlongs.

“He was completely unfocused from the paddock through the race,” Lewis said about the Belmont effort. “We put the blinkers on and it made a difference in the morning during his works.”

A homebred for Wheelock Whitney, Our Independence spurted away to a 2 1/2-length victory over Bold Runner with the favorite Je Ne Sais Pas third.

Lewis and Whitney have been work-ing together for more than 25 years.

“I was training privately, but then I went back to public,” Lewis said. “When he knew I was going back on my own, he sent me this horse to help build my barn. So it means a lot to us.”

The two also teamed up for Lewis’ first stakes win with Buchman in the 1990 Chanhassen Stakes at Canter-bury Park. Whitney’s son, also Lewis’ step-brother, was on hand to celebrate.

BY KAREN M. JOHNSONOwner Matt Schera recalls a time

when he was a teenager and couldn’t help notice the ever-growing, tower-ing stack of Daily Racing Forms be-longing to his mother.

“It was about four-feet high,” Schera said on a recent afternoon at Saratoga Race Course.

Today, the 45-year-old hedge-fund trader from Connecticut is amassing a large collection of his own – but his racing obsession is of the bigger vari-ety. Schera, who bought his first horse in 2013, owns 77 Thoroughbreds.

While growing up in Pennsylva-nia, not far from Penn National Race Course, Schera caught the racing bug from his mom, who had no direct ties

to the sport but rather was a fan of handicapping and going to the races.

“I started looking at the charts in the Racing Form and seeing who won,” Schera said. “Then, I started to figure out how to handicap. I began going to the track when I was 18.”

Two years ago, through a work acquaintance, Schera met owner Jake Ballis. Together they bought a couple of horses at that year’s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale of selected yearlings.

“But I realized, probably a month later, this isn’t fun if I’m not racing anything right away,” Schera said. “The night of the sale, I met a trainer, James “Chuck” Lawrence, who was a really nice guy. I called Chuck a few weeks later and we talked, and I

told him I wanted to get a horse who could run sooner than the yearlings I bought.”

That horse turned out to be Waynesborough, a private purchase on the advice of Lawrence. In his first start, Waynesborough finished sec-ond at Penn National Sept. 21, 2013. Soon after, Schera, again on the ad-

vice of Lawrence, bought Street Slang from a horses-of-racing-age sale in Saratoga. In November that year, at Parx Racing, Street Slang became the owner’s first winner.

Lawrence, based at the Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland, trains 28 horses for Schera.

He also serves as an advisor to Schera at the sales, and was part of the team that earmarked the four horses the owner bought at this year’s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale of selected yearlings.

“Matt has been a big boost to my stable,” said Law-rence, a former two-time champion steeplechase jockey. “He has so much enthusiasm for the game. For someone who has just been in the game a few years, he’s done a lot better than some people who have been in it 20.”

Schera runners have won nearly $3 million in purses since Waynesborough got things going two years ago in-cluding a win here with the Lawrence-trained Perfect Title Aug. 7.

The owner has sprinkled his wealth of horse stock, which runs the gamut from graded winners to claimers, among several New York-based trainers as well, includ-ing Abigail Adsit, Carlos Martin, Bill Mott, Todd Pletcher, and George Weaver.

Schera’s first graded winner was the Pletcher-trained Race Day, who won this year’s Grade 3 Razorback Hand-icap at Oaklawn Park, which the colt followed with a vic-tory in the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap. The owner’s most recent stakes winner, Syntax, won the Grade 3 Kent at Delaware Park in July for Mott.

There is a reason that many of Schera’s horses have weather-related names: Cyclogenisis, Isotherm, and La Nina, to name a few.

“I started my career as a meteorologist,” Schera said. “I went to Penn State and got my degree in atmospheric sciences. I’m such a weather geek. For two years, I was with a company called AccuWeather, working with tele-vision weather personalities, doing newspaper forecasts, and warning clients of storms. I then got a job at an ener-gy company, where they traded national gas, power, and weather derivatives. From there, I met another trader and we moved to Connecticut together and started working at a hedge fund as a team. We’ve been there almost 10 years now.”

Schera admits the size of his equine holdings, combined with the fact they were acquired so quickly, does cause him anxiety at times. But ultimately, he said, he can’t help himself.

“I’m totally nervous; very nervous about it,” he said. “When I started, my friends joked around, because they know I go all-in on things. They said, ‘You’re going to have 20 horses before you know it.’ I said, ‘No way, I will never have that many.’ Then they would say, ‘You’re going to have 30 horses.’ And I would say, ‘No, I’m done. I’m not buying another horse.’ ”

He added: “At the yearling sale, the other night in Sara-toga, I promised myself, I’m just here to look. I’m not buy-ing anything. And then I saw a couple I fell in love with …”

Schera didn’t finish the sentence, but instead turned his gaze to the sky. Whether he was pondering his next equine purchase, or checking for rain, was anybody’s guess.

BY DAN TORDJMANWhen handling the work of a legend, there

comes pressure. What makes Walter May’s job even tougher is that he’ll be on a stage alone when he evokes the spirit of legendary turf writer Joe Palm-er at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame tonight.

It was about 30 years ago that May, a Ken-tucky-based actor, purchased the book This Was Racing, a collection of Palmer’s racing columns from the New York Herald Tribune published in 1953, a year after Palmer died.

“I found Joe Palmer’s writing so compelling, and the subject matter so compelling,” May said. “It’s intelligent, wry, nuanced . . . I thought it would make a great project.”

Now, that project has manifested itself in a unique presentation of Palmer’s stories, a live oral retelling of some of his greatest written work. In “This Was Racing: An Evening with Joe Palmer,” May plans to take the audience at the Hall of Fame back in time, connecting it to some of the richest

writing from the golden age of racing. “It’s so evocative of the time and places Palmer

writes about, that I think people will feel that, yes, this industry and this game that they love really is special and really is worth celebrating,” May said.

In addition to adapting the performance from Palmer’s writings, May will also be acting alone, in a rare one-man-show. The entire production has been built on May’s vision and hinges on his exe-cution.

“This is different from a regular stage produc-tion of a play in that it doesn’t have a director, it doesn’t have a lighting designer, or any of that other stuff,” he said.

May has only publicly performed “An Evening With Joe Palmer” once, at the Keeneland Library in March. It was after that performance that Brien

Bouyea, the director of communications at the Na-tional Museum of Racing, heard from several peo-ple that the show was very well received.

“The stories he’s going to tell are about some of the greatest horses, jockeys and trainers in the

history of the sport,” Bouyea said. “So, we thought it would be a good fit and a lot of people seem interested in coming.”

The show seems an especially good fit because of Palmer’s affinity for Saratoga. The longest sections of This Was Racing revolve around Saratoga, as do May’s lengthiest scenes in the play.

Palmer was named to the Hall of Fame’s Joe Hirsch Media Roll of Honor in 2011. Interestingly, Hirsch received the National Turf Writers And Broadcaster’s Joe Palmer Award for meritorious service to racing in 1994.

To test out Palmer’s written-mate-rial in spoken-form, May held several dress rehearsals and private perfor-mances. He initially tried it out in the living rooms of friends and family. Most recently, May performed it for

a group of about 50 at a Kentucky church and in front of another group at his mother-in-law’s retirement community.

“In a particular piece, I tried to find the things that I think will be heard well,” he said. “I try to imagine how (Palmer) would’ve told the story, if he were just sitting around with his friends, you know, having a drink or something.”

The performance will open with wine and cheese in the museum’s courtyard before the performance beginning at 5:30 p.m. General ad-mission is $10 and free to museum members.

It might seem like there would be a lot of pressure on May, being alone on stage and all, but he sounded con-fident and calm this week. May noted that the man he’ll be playing has al-ready taken care of the hard part.

“The material is so good that I’m just truly grateful for that,” May said. “I’m truly grateful that Joe Palmer left this legacy of such great material.”

Plan ahead for

next yearwww.racingcityrealty.com

I hate saying goodbye. It sounds so abrupt, so fi-nal. So when Tom Law asked me to write a farewell column for The Saratoga Special, I determined that it would be a ‘see you later’ column.

Because why would I ever want to bid Saratoga farewell?

By the time I roll out of town today, I will have spent 38 days in Saratoga.

I feel blessed for each and every one of those 38 days, but I selfishly wish there were more. Next year feels so far away, but in my heart I know that an entire year will pass as quickly as my 38 days did this season.

When I reflect on the past few weeks, small pre-cious moments flicker through my brain – ones that I want to savor. It’s these moments that will help me survive my Saratoga withdrawals until next year.

Like the first time Tom brought me and the other interns up to the roof of the grandstand one morn-ing. Horses jogged along the outside rail, the sun streamed through the trees onto the lake in the in-field, workers blazed along the inside rail. If you closed your eyes you could hear them approach, the hoofbeats steadily becoming louder, the snorts of their breathing getting heavier.

On Opening Day, I saw a groom in the paddock gently scratching a horse’s forehead as he was being saddled for a race. Amidst the chaos of other hors-es and people and music and drinks and food and picnic tables – everything that goes into a day at the races – there was a moment of perfect tranquility. This sport is comprised of many different dimen-sions, but it’s still centered around one thing – the horses.

Because as Tom would say, this is horse racing, of course, and it’s called that for a reason.

And then there was the Whitney. It wasn’t just the race itself that blew me away,

the powerful performance of Honor Code as he pulled ahead to win over Liam’s Map. It was the adoration from the crowd as Honor Code returned to the winner’s circle. Cameras and smiles were lad-en throughout the mob of fans as laughter, tears of joy and shouts of excitement resounded through the air.

Yesterday morning I arrived at the track for my last official day of work. I knew there would be tears at some point.

This place has become a part of me, as have the people, the horses and the experience as a whole.

I knew the last day would sneak up on me, and it did.

I learned that Sean had written his Cup of Coffee column for Aug. 20 about me. I had to read it in chunks as not to embarrass myself in public as my eyes welled up with tears. How blessed I’ve been to have come here and worked with such amazing people who had the confidence to bring a girl from Fargo, North Dakota, to work at one of the great-est racetracks in the world.

I don’t even know how to begin expressing the depth of my gratitude toward Sean and Joe Clancy and Tom Law for all they’ve taught me, to the fami-ly that graciously allowed their home to be mine for the duration of my stay, to the friends I’ve met, the kind words of wisdom shared and the patience and compassion shown to me.

I finished reading the last chunk of Sean’s col-umn as Tom and I stood in Larry Jones’ shedrow and watched I’m A Chatterbox cool out after train-ing. The tears came as it finally sunk in: it’s time to go home. Tom looked at me, patted me on the back and said ‘Don’t worry. They’ve been running races here for 152 years. You’ll be back next year kid.’

I’ll see you later Saratoga.

BROWN ADVISORY IS PROUD TO SUPPORTSARATOGA RACING

BALTIMORE WASHINGTON NEW YORK BOSTON CHAPEL HILL LONDON WILMINGTON

(800) 645-3923 www.brownadvisory.com

“Hey, editor. Can you get me a copy of the paper with the picture from The Chief’s day?”

Keith McFarlane met me at the Morning Line Kitchen asking for a photo of the winner’s circle tribute to Allen Jerkens. McFarlane was in the pho-to, holding a picture of The Chief.

Two days later, I found McFarlane at Leah Gyar-mati’s barn.

“I thought you forgot about me,” McFarlane said, in between walking horses.

I asked him one question about Jerkens, the late great Hall of Fame trainer who still holds a spell over all of us.

When did you start working for him? McFarlane, in his deep Jamaican voice, laughed.

“We had about six feet of snow and that’s the time I go look for a job. I went to his barn, he used to gallop his horses in the snow, let them jump out of it. I went over and said, ‘Hello, Mr. Jerkens. You looking for an exercise rider?’ He looked around and said, ‘On a morning, that nobody shows up and you show up looking for a job.’ We started from there.

“I remember seeing him play polo in Jamaica, at Caymanas Park, in the middle of the track there was a polo field and he was a good polo player. I had always heard of The Chief, The Giant Killer, I said, I would like to work with this man. That’s when I found out, he had more imagination than any man I ever seen. He was a modest man, any-body could tell him something. He don’t feel like he’s too big or know too much.

“Jamaica was an English colony, we were taught by the English people, he would ask me questions. He would say, ‘Keith, what would an Englishman do with this horse?’ I would say, ‘I seen them do this, and that for certain things.’ He would say, ‘That makes sense.’

“A trainer would come to him, ‘Chief, I have a

horse with a problem…what would you do?’ He’d say, ‘I don’t know any more than anyone else.’ He would go on for two minutes, then he’d come around, ‘You know, to tell you the truth, I remem-ber I trained this horse, we used to do this, I would try this, I don’t know if it’s going to work, it would work for me . . . but I would try it.’ That’s him not telling you what to do, but telling you what to do.

“I remember at Hialeah, he went to Woody Ste-phens, his good friend, ‘Woody, you just run a horse there, I have someone interested…’ The horse went 7 furlongs, they said it was too short. He went a mile and they said it was too long. The horse ran at Calder and we wound up with the horse. The next

day, I’m on the horse and he’s on the pony, at Hiale-ah, on that long horse path. We pass Woody’s barn, every day, Woody say, ‘That the horse?’ ‘Yeah.’ ‘Oh, you going to win with that horse.’ Chief would say, ‘I can’t better you.’ Every day, up and down that path with the pony, not going to the track.

“At Hialeah, they had the gap at the quarter pole, one morning, he pushed me inside, onto the track, he didn’t have the horse down to gallop. I said, ‘Chief, what we going to do?’ He said, ‘I don’t know.’ I said, ‘What do you mean, you don’t know, we’re on the track.’ He said, ‘Just turn his head loose and let him go.’ I said, ‘What do you mean, let him go?’ He said, ‘Let him do whatever he wants.’ I said, ‘How far?’ He said, ‘Until he stops, when he gets tired, he’ll stop.’ I turn his head loose and bgggda, bggda, bggda, bggda. He sits on the pony, I pass him, the horse gets to the wire, slows down and I pull him up. He looks at me, ‘He looks like he liked that.’

“We walk him the next day, the next day and then go out there and do the same thing. Then two days before he’s to race, we go to the gate. He said, ‘Just let him walk around, smell it, look at it, noth-ing. We don’t know what he likes. Let’s see what he likes.’ I stand back there and the guy at the gate walks over, ‘What are you going to do Keith?’ I said, ‘The man said let him walk around, stand, smell it, watch the horses.’ He said, ‘Yeah, that’s Chief.’ Ed-die Maple rode him, wire to wire, 7 furlongs.

He’d swing that saddle towel, like a rag, he’d always give you one, ‘Come on, flag the flies off him.’ He would look at the bedding in the stall, ‘Why does this horse have no bedding?’ He don’t mind how much it cost him, he’d fill that stall with straw. ‘How would you like to be sleeping on the spring? Can you sleep uncomfortable? It’s the same thing with the animal.’ His philosophy was if you do good for the horse, the horse would do good for you. If you help him, he’ll help you.”
