Financing your higher education programme

We appreciate that the financial implications are animportant factor when considering a highereducation course and at Stephenson College we willdo our best to offer help to overcome this barrier.

In the first instance studying a higher educationqualification at Stephenson College will costsignificantly less than attending university.

The two main costs associated with studying ahigher education course are tuition fees andmaintenance (living) costs.

Financial help is available from the Student LoansCompany as follows:

Full-time students may be eligible to apply for:

� Tuition Fee Loan

� Maintenance Grant (depends on your personalhousehold income)

� Maintenance Loan

Part-time students may be eligible for:

� Tuition Fee Loan

Please be advised that loans will need to be repaidback to the Student Loans Company, but only whenyour personal salary is over £21,000 per year(2012/2013).

In addition to these loans and grants you may beentitled to the following additional help:

Mature students and returning to study

The College welcomes applications from maturestudents and anyone wishing to return to study.Mature students may not be required to meet theformal entry requirements. The College also offersAccess to Higher Education programmes to help youprogress on to a higher education qualification.

We will also provide the information you will need toexplore the many different options available tosupport your future career.

You can also call us for an application pack, or applyonline at [email protected] receipt of your application we will arrange for aninformal interview with a tutor. Following asuccessful interview and (where applicable) theuniversity sanction, you may be offered a place.

Student Union

As a student at Stephenson College you willautomatically become a member of the StudentUnion. Membership is free but to be able to accessNUS discounts you will need to buy the NUS ExtraCard. This offers many discounts in shops, leisurecentres, cinemas, and nightclubs. NUS cards areavailable from Student Services or by visitingwww.nusonline.co.uk.

How do I apply?

Full-time applications

Applications for Higher National Diplomas and fulltime Foundation Degree courses are via the UCASOnline Application Form. This should be processedthrough your school or college; however we arehappy to help if requested.

If you are not at school or college you can apply asan individual by logging onto www.ucas.com/apply.

Applicants are advised to apply as early as possibleafter carefully considering the course you areinterested in, although we are happy to acceptapplications through UCAS at any time of the year.Additionally there may still be time to get a placethrough Clearing. This is an opportunity for studentsto apply directly to institutions for a place on ahigher education course.

Part-time applications:

Part-time application forms are available fromStudent Services or the College Higher EducationAdvisor - please make applications directly to theCollege.

School or college leavers

If you are about to leave school or college and notsure which direction you would like to take, we arealways available to assist and can offer specialistadvice and guidance to help you make the rightchoices.

FOUNDATION DEGREES

What is aFoundation Degree?

Foundation Degrees are intermediate,work-related degree level qualifications,designed with employers. They combineacademic study with workplace learningand equip you with the relevant knowledge,understanding and skills needed to improve yourperformance and enhance your career prospects.

Foundation Degrees allow those in employment toundertake a programme of study to get ahead intheir chosen career whilst continuing to work.

You can also take a Foundation Degree whenreturning to work or changing your career.

In most cases the Foundation Degree takes twoyears and you can choose to ‘top up’ yourqualification at a university.

Stephenson College offers the following FoundationDegrees:

� Children’s and Young People’s Services(with Derby University)

� Construction Management (with NottinghamTrent University)

� Business (with Nottingham Trent University)

� Dementia Studies (with the University ofBradford)

Entry Requirements

You must be at least 18 years old, hold 5 GCSEs atGrade C or above, including Maths and English (orequivalent) and a Level 3 qualification, (an A Level orNational Diploma/Certificate/Award (DMM) orequivalent).

� If you are a mature student without formalqualifications we are happy to discuss entryrequirements on an individual basis that may beable to take into account other qualificationsand experience.

All candidates will attend an interview.

Progression

On completion of a Foundation Degree there is theopportunity to progress to a full Honours Degreewith additional full-time study, (this can also betaken on a part-time basis over a longer period oftime). Foundation Degree graduates can alsoprogress on to further professional qualificationswith relevant experience.

� Business

The Business FoundationDegree provides a generalbusiness qualification. Theprogramme encompassesthe skills and knowledgerequired to enhanceprofessional practice,improve employmentprospects and raisestandards within thebusiness sector.

This qualification is awarded through NottinghamTrent University who have established Bachelorprogrammes as progression opportunities inBusiness Studies.

� Construction Management

This is a dynamic programme run in partnership withNottingham Trent University. The course is designedto equip graduates with the skills, knowledge andunderstanding they need to be successful in theconstruction management and quantity surveyingsectors of the construction industry.

This qualification is awarded through NottinghamTrent University who have established Bachelorprogrammes as progression opportunities inConstruction Management.

� Children’s & Young People’s Services

This qualification is awarded through DerbyUniversity and on successful completion you couldprogress to a full EYPS Honours Degree or TeacherTraining. In addition the programme will enhanceyour professional practice.

� Dementia Studies

The Foundation Degree will be awarded through theUniversity of Bradford who have establishedBachelor and Masters programmes in DementiaStudies as aprogressionopportunity. Thiscourse is designedfor healthpractitionersworking in settingsthat providedementia care. Thecourse will enhanceyour professionalpractice, thereforeraising the carestandards fordementia services.

What is anHNC/HND?

HIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATES

� ConstructionHigher National Certificate (HNC)

� Civil EngineeringHigher National Certificate (HNC)

These courses are designed to equip students withthe necessary knowledge and skills to enhance theirprospects in a highly competitive and ever changinglabour market. They are linked into NationalVocational Qualifications and, as such, are nationallyrecognised both by employers and a number ofprofessional organisations.

Being enrolled on these courses enables free studententry in to some professional bodies i.e. Member ofthe British Institute of Architectural Technologists(MBIAT), Institute of Civil Engineers and theChartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

Students can then progress to Degree level courses.

Higher National Diploma (HND) is studied overtwo years full time covering 10 modules.HNC stands for Higher National Certificateand is a two-year programme taken either byday-release or evening study covering 16 modules.

The qualifications are designed to provide you withthe right balance between knowledge and work-related skills. In this way you gain real employmentoptions at the end of only two years study, as well asopportunities to progress to further higher educationprogrammes.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and holda National Diploma or equivalent (DMM) and Englishand Maths at Level 2, or GCSEs Grade C or above.

� Software Development(HNC/HND)

The Higher National inComputing is designed forthose who wish to work,or are already workingwith computers in aprofessional capacity. Theaim of the programme isto develop a soundunderstanding of howcomputers work and canbe used in a wide varietyof ways to supportbusiness, industrial,commercial educationaland public sectororganisations.

� Electrical EngineeringHigher National Certificate (HNC)

� Electrical EngineeringHigher National Diploma (HND)

These courses are designed to produce technicianswith a sound grounding in the principles of electricaland electronic engineering. There is a major skillsshortage in the UK for qualified engineers who canundertake a variety of jobs in areas such asmanagement, design, development, planning,control, marketing and sales and can apply theirknowledge in work-based situations.

These programmes provide a comprehensivecoverage of electrical andelectronics theory andpractice. They are designedto give a broadunderstanding of theelectrical and electronicsindustry, whilst allowing youto develop your ownspecialist skills in thesecond year. You will beencouraged to participate inwork experience during theprogramme and this usuallyinvolves a work basedproject.

� Mechanical EngineeringHigher National Certificate (HNC)

� Mechanical EngineeringHigher National Diploma (HND)

This programme is intended to providestudents with the technical education requiredto compete on level academic terms withsenior technicians. The syllabus covers abroad-based engineering spectrum, includingdesign production and plant subjects, with anemphasis on hands-on instructions on computerapplications in engineering.

� Motor Vehicle EngineeringHigher National Certificate (HNC)

� Vehicle OperationsHigher National Certificate (HNC)

The HNC programmes are structured to develop thestudent who works, or wishes to work, in a vehiclerelated environment. The development will cover arange of units focusing on both managerial andpractical applications in vehicle operations.

The HNC is recognised by universities as a suitableentry requirement for Degree level courses. Youcould also progress to employment in a vehiclefranchise, fleet management or start your ownbusiness.

� Sport (Coaching and SportsDevelopment)

Higher National Certificate (HNC)

This programme is particularly relevant to studentswanting a career in sports coaching or sportsdevelopment. Students will develop the knowledge,performance and skills required to coach sportsperformance as well as the understanding ofmanaging and evaluating sports developmentstrategies.

On completion of the programme you can progressonto an HND, full Degree, or top-up Honours Degreedepending on achievement of the specific entryrequirements. You can also enter the field of sportscoaching as a profession (with appropriate coachingqualifications), sports development or other fitnessand leisure industries.

TEACHER TRAINING

� Professional Diploma in Teaching in theLifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS)

This is the mandatory professional qualification forteachers in the lifelong learning sector. You willalready be employed in the sector, but on successfulcompletion of the course you could progress into acourse coordinator role, management or gainpromotion.

� Professional Graduate Diploma inTeaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector(GDTLLS)

This is the graduateroute for the mandatoryprofessionalqualification forteachers in the lifelonglearning sector. You willalready be employed inthe sector but if yousuccessfully completethe course you couldprogress into a coursecoordinator role,management or gainpromotion.

� Business & Administration -NVQ Level 4

Business and Administration NVQs are aimed at staffworking in administration roles across alloccupations and sectors of employment.The level 4 qualification is intended for individualswho are working at a senior level with considerableresponsibility for the management of systems andresources, who work with an extensive degree ofautonomy. The individual’s role will involvedeveloping and monitoring facilities and resources tomaintain an administrative service within theorganisation.

On completion of this course students can progressto the Business Foundation Degree.

LEVEL 4 QUALIFICATIONS

� Accounting (AAT) - NVQ Level 4

The AAT Accounting qualification is idealfor anyone wanting to work as anaccounting technician. This vocationalcourse provides the knowledge and skills toperform the tasks demanded by this role. Itoffers you the chance to gain a useful andpractical qualification, while learning at yourown pace.

Once you’ve completed your studies and you becomea full member, you are entitled to use the lettersMAAT after your name.

You can also register to work for yourself - the AAThas 1,600 members in practice offering accountingand taxation services to small businesses and thepublic.

Once you’ve achieved the AAT Accountingqualification, you may be eligible for exemptionsfrom the foundation stage exams of all the UKcharted accountancy bodies. Full details ofexemptions are available on the AAT website atwww.aat.org.uk/charteredaccountancy.

On completion of this course students can progressto the Business Foundation Degree.

LEVEL 4 QUALIFICATIONS

� Customer Service - NVQ Level 4

This qualification is suitable for candidates who havea role that is clearly linked to customer service, orwho may have a general management job thatinvolves customer service. It would also suitconsultants or specialists who have a responsibilityfor a particular aspect of the business which impactsdirectly on customer service.

On completion of this course students can progressto the Business Foundation Degree.

� Health & Social Care - NVQ Level 4

This course is designed for candidates working inadult care services at a senior level. The units arerelated to the management of care services. Theprogramme recognises the mix of advancedpractitioner functions in first line managerialresponsibility.

On completion of this course there is an opportunityfor further career progression, or as a steppingstone towards the Registered Managers Award or aFoundation Degree in Dementia Studies.

� Leadership for Care - NVQ Level 4

This course is designed for candidates working inadult care services at management level. The unitsare related to the management of systems andstructures in an organisational context.

This course enables the student to be a RegisteredManager within care services and could lead on toHigher Education e.g. the Foundation Degree inDementia Studies.

� Site Management - NVQ Level 4

The course is designed for Building Managementpractitioners in both the private and public sector. Itis suitable for both established building sitemanagers and thosewho are developingtheir abilities in thisoccupation.

This course will allowyou to apply for yourCSCS ManagementCard which will soonbecome law; howevermost constructionprojects have alreadyadopted it asmandatory.

On completion of thiscourse students canprogress to theFoundation Degree inConstructionManagement.
